The Light #2

Away from the Dark

Rate this book
Nine months ago, Sara Adams awoke with no memory. The man holding her hand told her she’s a member of The Light, a tight-knit religious group led by the terrifying and charismatic Father Gabriel. As a woman in the community of The Light, her duty is to be unquestionably obedient and to submit to the will of her husband.

But as Sara’s memory starts to return and she remembers her past, she sees that everything she’s been told is a lie. The Light is an insidious and dangerous organization, and its corrupting influence reaches well beyond the confines of the remote campus where Sara is being held.

With everything at stake, Sara struggles to sort out her true memories from her indoctrination. The desire to escape consumes her, but who can she trust? And which other followers of The Light were forced into this life, brainwashed to believe they belonged? The more she remembers, the more it becomes clear that Jacob, the man who calls himself her husband, is keeping shattering secrets of his own.

But Sara cannot flee alone, leaving innocents behind. She must fight to extinguish The Light.

★★★★ ½! Away from the Dark, book 2 of 2. The suspenseful conclusion filled with shockers, twists & set-backs in a quest for elusive truths & comforting lies!

Books in The Light duet should be read in order:
Book 1: Into the Light
Book 2: Away from the Dark

The Light duet is a suspenseful romantic thriller.

In Into the Light, book 1 we were introduced to a woman, Sara with amnesia caught in a religious cult, the Light while a reporter, Stella was investigating the disappearance of women in the city of Detroit. Both seeking truth and understanding, but being blinded by lies and deception.

Away from the Dark, book 2 opens up to book 1’s shocking ending. Sara, Jacob, Stella and Dylan’s journey continue and becomes a race against time, away from the dark towards revelation, understanding and truth.

There is nothing more earth shattering than realizing that the truth is so dangerous it could get you killed. This is the conclusion filled with shockers, set-backs, twists and a battle of good versus evil.

It surprised, shocked and thrilled me. but most of all left me reflecting on the illusions in life. This is a duet and concludes their story. That said, I see the possibility of a sequel. [wink wink] Aleatha you could title it Within the Shadows or Beyond the Shadows! ; )

***I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley.com, in exchange for honest feedback.***

Aleatha Romig is one of my favorite authors. Ever since reading 'Consequences', I one-click anything she writes. She's never let me down. Her books always mess with my mind and tear me up inside in the best possible way. She has a way of making me question all of the things that I thought I knew, obliterating any clear sense of right and wrong. She makes me explore those gray areas, where things aren't always clear-cut.

While 'Into the Light' was full of questions and mystery, 'Away from the Dark' is full of answers. The pieces of the puzzle slowly piece themselves together, providing a comprehensive view of "The Light". However, some truths are more terrifying than the lies.

As Sara's memories come back to her, she is faced with the grim reality of her situation. She is fully aware of the evil that surrounds her, but powerless to stop it. Trying to save herself only lands her in greater danger, forcing her to rely upon the very man that she's trying to escape.

Regardless of the situation, Sara fell in love with Jacob. After his true identity is revealed to Sara, they both struggle to come to terms with what that means for them. Can you really love an illusion? Does the end justify the means? Both Sara and Jacob do a lot of soul-searching in this book.

Admittedly, the book started a little slow for me. It went back in time a little to provide a more complete description of the events leading up to Sara's escape at the end of the first book. While that information was critical, it killed me to be moving back in time versus forward. I was dying to know how everything would work out and patience isn't a strength of mine.

That being said, once things started to move forward, I could not put it down. I literally fell asleep with my iPad on my chest and woke up in the middle of the night when it fell over and smacked me in the face, nearly breaking my nose! It is one of those books.

There were some twists and turns along the way. The suspense was incredible. Even the revelation of things that were known to readers at the end of the first book, seemed shocking - again - as Sara discovers them for the first time. I could feel the betrayal and heartache as if they were tangible.

As is the norm for Ms. Romig, the characters and storyline are extremely well-developed. The plot was complex and brilliant. The ending gave me chills.

If you love a story that is a little dark and full of suspense, this is a fantastic choice. I won't give it away, but it is sooo worth it. I absolutely loved this unique story.

“description"/

After I finished Into the Light earlier this year, I was blown away and so ready for the sequel. When this hit my kindle, I dove in, ready to see what was going to happen with Sara. A huge bomb was dropped and I had to see how it was going to turn out. I have to say, I love the direction Aleatha took with this story. There were so many parts that left me a nervous wreck, just waiting to see what would happen. I couldn't tell how this would turn out, but it was a page turner till the very end.

In the first book, we got the povs of Sara, Stella and Jacob. I loved seeing how everything tied together. How certain people were involved… By the end of this book I was in awe of how everything connected. I am really hoping that this series is continued. I know Sara and Jacob’s story concluded, but there are loose ends and things that I need to know. I would be thrilled if another book was written.

Away from the Dark was just as thrilling, suspenseful and mysterious as the first. The romantic element was a bit stronger, and I loved that! I enjoyed this series a lot. The characters are complex and the story, intriguing. I highly recommend this series/book!

While difficult, I’m attempting to keep this review completely spoiler free in regards to books #1&2 in The Light series. This being book 2, you are either just now hearing about this addicting series and need to immediately rush out and grab Into the Light, or you’ve read book #1 and are about to start/just finished Away from the Dark (yay! that’s this book!). Either way, you’re in for a treat, and I can’t stress enough how fantastic this series is. While I originally thought this was just going to be a duology, I’m now wondering if she left this the way it is with the intent of coming back to it at a later date? I wouldn’t call it a cliffhanger; just an open ending, but more on that later.

This book picks up directly where Into the Light left off, and even though you wouldn’t want to, (because book #1 was fantastic and you’d be missing loads of details that make these books as good as they are) you could almost pick this one up and be filled in on all the major happenings of book #1. The first 35-40% of the book is setting up “the grand finale” and convincing Sara to “extinguish The Light”. I know, VAGUE VAGUE VAGUE but it’s for your own good. If you read book #1 you know exactly what I’m talking about. I’ll admit, the pacing was a little slower to begin with in this book, but once it took off I couldn’t put it down. I just love the characters in these books; even though at times it’s cheesy and unrealistic, I can’t help but get sucked into their world and become attached. I LOVE CULT THEMED BOOKS. Call me twisted, but it has always fascinated me, especially due to my inquisitive mind always trying to pin point how a few humans can convince a group to follow their mentality. There has been some fantastic cult-related fiction released in 2016, but these books take the cake. The romantic aspect is a huge draw as well, as its not overly mushy or erotic, which just adds to the plot instead of distracting from the action.

I’ll admit that the ending went in a completely different direction than I expected, which is always a good thing! Two separate characters who I felt were just minor and necessary for specific motivations turned out to be major characters who I’d like to see come back and continue the story (come on Aleatha!!! Don’t leave us hanging!) Again, for those who are thinking “I don’t want to start another series that will just leave me unsatisfied and hanging in the end”; don’t. I can’t go into detail but it’s not that kind of ending. There was closure on multiple levels, and the ending could be left alone perfectly fine if she chooses. This was just an ending that left the option of coming back in the future. Clearly you can tell which side of the fence I fall on, but I will respect her wishes if she so chooses to never touch these characters again. *sniff sniff* Highly recommended to cult fiction and thriller fanatics; this one isn’t just marketed to ladies! I know many of my Goodreads buddies have read both already, and the reviews are turning out to be just as fabulous for this one as they were for the first. Well done, and I’ll be looking for more from author Aleatha Romig.

Most of us, I think, already have at least a passing awareness of Jonestown and the Branch Davidians of Waco, Texas.  At least enough to know that there is never an easy way out once you are taken into the fold of a cult.  I’m sure too that most of us have heard of the brainwashing techniques and the all too real necessity for deprogramming individuals exposed over time to these rituals.

And BAM! just like that this book picks up right where Into the Light left off.

If you have not as yet read Into the Light then you must start there but for the purposes of this brief review I shall avoid any and all spoilery type stuff.

That said, man oh man,  is it ever difficult to know who to trust here and not being sure of the answer to that vital question leaves the reader on the edge of their seat, wondering and worrying about betrayal and false friends.

Sara is getting her memory back.  She knows that she has been lied to not just by Father Gabriel and other members of The Light but clearly also by her husband.   As she tries to come to grips with what has happened to her,  she realizes that she cannot simply walk away from all the others who have also been duped and abused.  In order to help them Sara knows that she must put herself into the very hands of those who would toss her away like so much trash, without a second thought.

The pace of this story stays as relentless as it did in the previous book, but I confess that I had to suspend belief more here than I did in the first offering.  Not that that was a big show stopper for me because by then I was completely invested in this story and its outcome.

.And speaking of the outcome, thankfully this one does not end in a cliff-hamger.   Away from the Dark has more of an open ending while still letting the reader know the fate of the principal characters, but leaving ripe opportunity for the author to keep this series going.

Could be it is time to enter the world of shadows.  Either way; Do not drink the Kool-Aid!!

So Aleatha, If you write it, I will read it.

Re-read 24/5/2019 - audiobook

This duet is FANTASTIC in audio! The Narrators do a terrific job, you can hear the angst in their voices and feel the suspense. I'm still weirded out over the ending, it left the story wide open for another book but I don't think that's happening.

When I read a novel I like it to have substance, drama, hot sex, suspense and intrigue. Well Aleatha Romig ticks all of those boxes with every book I have read of hers and ......................

 photo Iloveit_zps2unwdrny.gif

With this book and every book I have read from this fantastic author I am continually blown away at her ability to take you away to wherever she chooses and put you in the minds of her characters with ease. I loved the setting of the Northern light in Alaska as it is a place that has always fascinated me.

 photo northernlight1_zpsqsllc0ho.gif

I got a stomach virus while reading this and was sick as a dog but there was no way I was putting this book down. I found myself enjoying it much more than the first, maybe as all the formalities were already done. The character development is fantastic as the circumstances change and truths are revealed. Not much I can say without spoilers which is a bummer because there is so much I want to say.

When I got to that ending though!!!

Not sure about everyone else but the ending left me with some questions and a little confused.

 photo confused_zps8vkekgex.gif

It also leaves me to believe that there may be more coming in this series, as things are left unfinished and questions still not answered.

Even if this was the last of the series I would highly recommend the series to anyone :)

I'm going to do my best to not go spoilery on the first book in this series, because that stuff was good and you need to read it.
Sara's memory has returned once she stopped her 'birth control' pills and Jacob finds out that she has left The Northern Light with another pilot. She realizes that The Light ain't all it's cracked up to be.
That whole follow Father Gabriel stuff and obeying everything your husband says can NOT be loads of fun.
commercial photography locations

Jacob finds her and the rescue is on. Turns out she picked the wrong guy to escape with. Jacob comes clean to her once he realizes that her memories are back and they profess their lovey dovey stuff.

Sara has a decision to make though and one of them is: Does she go back to the Kool aid drinkers for the greater good?

It's hard being brainwashed.
commercial photography locations

Jacob and Sara both feel that the evil Father Gabriel is not going to give up his army of worshippers very easily though. He has to have the old Jim Jones plan somewhere up his sleeve.

I LOVE these books, they throw in enough of the whole cultish thing that keeps me turning pages faster than Tom Cruise can whip out the crazy.

What just happened in the epilogue? What did it mean? Did the book really end like that?!

OH. MY. GOD! This book was crazily amazing. AMAZING!!! It made me feel various emotions. I was happy that Jacob and Sara were together, but at the same time, worried about their decision. I was so scared of what might happen to them if things went wrong. When they were in dangerous situations, I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest. But most of all, I was very angry with the bad guys and all the things they did to innocent people. And when I finished reading this book, the epilogue left me stunned, utterly speechless.

I can wholeheartedly say that Away from the Dark is hands down one of my most memorable reading experiences. While the first book was a bit predictable, this one was totally different. The plot was way beyond anything I could possibly imagine. Almost everything that happened in this book was unforeseeable. There were many unexpected twists and turns I never saw coming! To be honest, while reading this, I didn't even dare to guess what would happen in the next page.

I admired both Jacob and Sara for their determination, their bravery, and their strength. No matter what the outcome was, I think they did the best they could under the circumstances. And by the end, after all they had been through, I was truly happy for them that they eventually had their HEA. But that epilogue! Gosh, I want to know what really happened!

This was a great read, indeed. I can’t praise it highly enough. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!

I don't know who to trust!

The action literally picks up where book one left off.
Let me start by saying you MUST read book one first. It felt like one long book cut in half. The tension remained off the chart! I won’t divulge any details regarding the story-line as to not give anything away. Just know it was as riveting as the first book. I wanted to yell at the characters NO! DON'T DO IT!

Absolutely crazy. I am mentally exhausted from a weekend of reading both books in this series.
How crazy is it to say I need a vacation from reading!! Lol! NOT!!!

Don’t make me beg - I need a book 3! (Please!) What about the shadows?

Kool-aid anyone?

Away from the Dark is the second book in The Light Series. After reading Into the Light, I had high hopes for this book and it did not disappoint! I highly recommend reading Into the Light before reading Away from the Dark.

Away from the Dark picks up where Into the Light ended, with Jacob learning that Sara is missing. With the realization of her true identity, Sara/Stella is attempting to flee The Light. She seeks out the help of an outsider, Thomas, and puts herself in danger. With Jacob’s help, she is rescued just in time. Once reunited, Jacob reveals his true identity to Stella. He gives her two choices: enter into witness protection or stay with him and help him bring down the light. Stella chooses the latter, but what she and Jacob are unaware of is that they are both in imminent danger.

After being summoned by Father Gabriel, Jacob and Stella travel out of the Northern Light to go to the Eastern Light. Father Gabriel separates the two, and has some scary plans for Stella. Once again, Stella is saved, but this time it’s not Jacob who rescues her, but her former boyfriend, Dylan, who turns out to be crazier than Father Gabriel. Jacob and Stella now must fight to not only stay alive, but also to find their way back to one another.

Like Into the Light, Away from the Dark is packed with non-stop action, twists and turns, and romance. More is revealed about The Light, including a sub-group called The Shadows. I hope there will be additional books in the series, as I am not ready to move on!

I received an ARC of the book from NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer in exchange for an honest review.

5 the shadows, the light and the dark, oh my stars

Sara Adam's rose colored glasses has fallen and now deceit is in everywhere she sees. Lost in her own head, she is trying to figure out who to trust, denial is a serious bitch, while picking apart the reality of her life. The only thing that is certain is that she needs to run, as far away as she can and pray that someone will find her and believe her.

Jacob Adam's is about to risk everything he's worked for to keep his wife safe from harm, even if it means becoming the monster she fears most.

Stella Montgomery never imagined just how deep and twisted this story ran. But now she's been given a choice, fight or run...she just hopes that what ever she decides it'll keep her alive.

Away from the Dark takes off where Into the Light left off; and I can only describe my reading experience as explosive. A lot of heightened emotions and suspense, you never know what is going to happen next or what new truth will be revealed. This was a much faster paced read, completely sucked me into the mystery of it all. This is the second and final installment of The Light duet, which is told from multiple POV, making it easier to process all the information coming at you.

I'm so happy Jacob and Sara's story didn't get lost in the fold, in my eyes it only made them stronger. I loved how their relationship wasn't immature, they managed to make choice decisions with little to no added drama. It's a sick and twisted world they live in, where the desire for simplicity and security is exploited by greed and power.

Honestly it wouldn't be right to divulge anymore, this is just something you have to jump into and let the story take you away. While the story may have ended, I don't think this is the last we will see of the shadows, it's just too big to keep in the dark. Hope you take a chance and enjoy this something new. Take it for what it is and try not to over think it, after all it is only fiction....right!?!

AWAY FROM THE DARK is the final part of Aleatha Romig’s thrilling duet series and concludes wonderfully the dramatic events of INTO THE LIGHT. Told in the first person narrative and alternating perspectives this second part continues to demonstrate this author’s ability to weave an intriguing, multifaceted romantic thriller, one that captured my imagination and ensured I was utterly invested in the protagonist's survival and success.

Indoctrination is at the heart of this story, along with power, misguided belief, manipulation, greed and love. The level of detail and the layers this author wound around the plot, whilst simultaneously ensuring that the arc of the story is thoroughly character driven, is really quite incredible.

INTO THE LIGHT kept me on the edge of my seat and equally, AWAY FROM THE DARK had my attention gripped as the story arc continued to unfold in fascinating detail imparting all the intricacies and allowing the puzzle pieces to fall into place with clarity.

To ensure that I do not spoil this story in any way this is as much information as I wish to impart. Will the light and the evil that surrounds it be fully extinguished? There is only one way to find out. Read and soak up this dramatic, intense and really quite wonderful romantic thriller, a reading experience I highly recommend.

Captivating.....
Intriguing.....
Thrilling.....
Emotional.....
Suspenseful.....
EPIC......

Those words come to mind as I finished this book. From page one, (this books begins exactly where Into The Light ends) this book captivated and gripped me whole. I felt much anxiety and trepidation with every page I turned. It was suspenseful, emotional and I LOVED IT!!

This book deals with lies, truths, decisions that must to be made and trust that must be given. Sara and Jacob have come to a crossroad and everything is contingent as to whether they go to the right or to the left. The ending of Into The Light was OMG........and the beginning of this story piggybacked the OMG feeling exponentially. I read while holding my breath- Away From The Dark is that kind of book- Suspenseful-NerveWracking-Loving-Mind Altering-Perfection!!

The Light, Father Gabriel, The Commission, The Assembly, The Followers, Dylan........all play significant roles with Sara and Jacob. There are added elements, explanations and honesty, mystery and intrigue and added characters that all help to round out and strengthen the plot. There are so many moving factors that can derail and cause mishap that emotions are on high alert throughout the story. It's truly a thrilling and captivating read.

Lastly, this book deals with a lot secrecy and to enjoy to the fullest, one MUST not know anything. The blurb is sufficient in my opinion. Any little nuance or suggestion might tip you off one way or another. And really you should experience breath holding at its finest with this story. This book is part of a duet. You MUST read Into The Light before reading this one. This duet is for readers who love to question, think, gasp and wonder. It will keep your mind constantly analyzing good verses evil and truth verses lies. This duets offers it all and will make you think for days.........especially with that Epilogue!!!

Genre: Romantic Suspense/Thriller
Type: Book 2 of 2 from The Light series
POV: First Person – Multiple
Rating:

After nine months of being under control of the religious cult, The Light, Sara Adams' repressed memories started to come back to her. With the memories came questions that might better left unanswered. Alone with no one to trust, including her own husband Jacob, she must deduce and decide the course of actions in liberating the truth.

As I did I realized what I’d probably already known— I’d already trusted Jacob with everything: my mind, body, and life.

Sara went through a lot both as member of The Light and as her true self. I love seeing the dilemma of her battling her two competing sides.

I didn’t deserve her, and she didn’t deserve this.

I like how Jacob took a lot of risks on what he believed in. He had a good balance in using both his head and heart in accomplishing what he set out for.

I love the suspense elements in this book. There were a lot of heart thumping excitement and I love all the cliffy chapters that lured me to keep reading.

However, I am not fond of the ending. It just didn't feel put together as well as what had been happening earlier. I didn't mind the direction it went. I just needed it to have more impact.

Away From The Dark is a story of a woman claiming back the life taken from her. I would appeal to fans of elaborately plotted suspense.

Away from the dark..... I want away from the dark in the worst way. I fell in love with the main characters in this book. Loved them as a couple. Loved them individually.
It's hard to review a book without giving even a glimpse of anything away. This book unfolded the whole plot so saying a little may be too much...

Jacob. He is good in almost every way. He cares, he protects, and he loves fiercely. When a strong man sheds a tear he almost always wins my heart❤️

Sara. She is one of the strongest heroines. What she has endured, what she has to go through, and what she loses not just with herself but in her life. She deserves all the happiness life has to give her.

Jacob and Sara together is amazing to read. The bad, the good, all the in between. They are thrown together in the sickest of circumstances but prevail to bigger and better.

This book rocked my plane ride home. It not only shocked the crap out of me, it healed my heart and at the same time had my heart dropping in the end. I am left with a feeling there is more to come in this series with how things ended, if not and this is the end, then awesome❤️

Away from the Light, the 2nd book in Aleatha Romig's The Light Duet, picks up from the previous book, Into the Light.

After almost a year her memories being controlled by the religious cult, The Light, she's now started to remember the truth of about herself. Finding herself unable to trust anyone in the cult, including her so called husband, Jacob, she has to make a decision about her future and her freedom.

The story moves forward at a fast pace as we get the backstory for Sara and Jacob. The secondary characters are more developed in this book and more information on the cult and the methods they use to control people. It's sad to see how desperate some people are to finding answers and meaning in their lives that they are so easily manipulated by greedy and unscrupulous people.

This was a well-plotted, compelling, dark and twisted story with flawed and complex characters that are believable and relatable and that kept me on the edge of my seat with many twists and turns come at you when you least expect it.....

This book ended rather strangely. This is supposed to be a duet but the cliffhanger at the end left me asking...is there going to be another spin-off book of this series or not? And if not, why that epilogue??

Would I recommend these two books? Definitely.

After enjoying these two books by this author, I am really excited checking out more of her work.

Away from the Dark opens nine months after Sara Adams first awakened in The Light. Now that she has recovered her full memory, her options are limited, as knowing who to trust can be dangerous to many. Sara’s husband, Jacob, holds an esteemed position as an Assemblyman and has tried to teach her doctrine, but Jacob has kept his own secret and now his hand is forced in an effort to protect his wife.
“Everything was wrong. I was surrounded by lies. How had it happened? Why had it happened? Who had done this to me?”

As Sara’s memories become stronger, the truth is undeniable and falling back on her inquisitive nature, she decides to sacrifice her own fears to expose the reality of The Light. However, Sara must also reconcile her past and present to understand how choices will affect her future with Jacob.

“You can hate me for the rest of your life. Just, please, trust me for a few more hours. If you don’t, I’m afraid the rest of your life won’t be long.”

The pacing in this book is intense and the tension mounts from the beginning. Adding to the sense of foreboding are the varying POVs and chapter order that zig zag creating more questions for the reader. The range of character personalities are complimentary and contribute to the furtherance of this mysterious plot. There is no doubt as to who the villain is but his motives and associates become shadowy leading to some worthy book shouting moments.

“The Light is here and there and everywhere. There’s no escaping it.”

Aleatha Romig’s brand of story telling always leads the reader down a path that includes layers of twists and revelations and that signature is present in this book. At every turn, each character’s plight evokes strong emotions. With the larger than life presence of The Light, the cult culture becomes it’s own character by adding the elements of fear and empathy that underscore the need to expose such inequalities and illegalities.

This series was entertaining and had me turning page after page in practically one sitting. Jacob was a stand out character for me and Sara proved her strength in spades. In resolving the plot conflicts, most questions were answered but I was personally hoping for a different ending for a certain character. Overall, if you are looking for a thrilling romantic suspense, you will not be disappointed!

The story resumes where the first book left off and the tension never ceases!

We learn much more about the inner workings of The Light as Jacob and Sara try to navigate their way out of potentially dangerous situations. There are so many plot twists and revelations it was hard to find stopping points.

Whatever I thought I knew and understood about cult organizations was severely challenged and tested. Even though mind altering substances were used to initially control many of the women, it was still the conditioning that remained and kept them under control long after the drug use ceased. It was psychologically fascinating and it made me wonder how I would have fared.

This was an excellent two-book series, though the epilogue suggests the story hasn't ended. I hope not as this was a very interesting subject matter with much more that could be explored. For those who like to read out of order...don't. You'll be utterly confused so do yourself a favor and start with the first book. I liked how things ended for Jacob and Sara but am intrigued about the future possibilities.

4.5 - OH MY GOD- Stars (SPOILER FREE - IMO)
So, so, so good. I received my copy thanks to the NetGalley gods yesterday morning and pretty much did nothing around my house until I could finish it. I even snuck in reading at work this morning because I had to know what happens. And let me tell you my fingernails are all bitten off now from my anxiety!

So in this book, Book 2, we focus around these characters:

Sara

Jacob

Members of "The Light" - Northern, Western and Eastern Sects

Father Gabriel-aka Leader of the Special People Club

and he who cannot be named bc it may be spoilery.

So we continue off from the cliffhanger which ended book 1 and move forward to determine what happens with Sara, Jacob, and The Light. Once a person has left the light, they are not allowed to return and are banished to the dark.

"Tomorrow is up to you."

I can't say much without spoiling so I will just say these two very important things:

"Sara loves Jacob. And Jacob loves Sara. Please never forget that."

and

Don't ever drink the Kool-Aid

I liked how the story ended and the fact that it is left somewhat open. I wouldn't mind one more book of continuing this story but would hate for it to keep being expanded upon. I do not think Ms. Romig can perfect this story much more than it already is.

~~~~~BLURB~~~~~
Nine months ago, Sara Adams awoke with no memory. The man holding her hand told her she’s a member of The Light, a tight-knit religious group led by the terrifying and charismatic Father Gabriel. As a woman in the community of The Light, her duty is to be unquestionably obedient and to submit to the will of her husband.
But as Sara’s memory starts to return and she remembers her past, she sees that everything she’s been told is a lie. The Light is an insidious and dangerous organization, and its corrupting influence reaches well beyond the confines of the remote campus where Sara is being held.
With everything at stake, Sara struggles to sort out her true memories from her indoctrination. The desire to escape consumes her, but who can she trust? And which other followers of The Light were forced into this life, brainwashed to believe they belonged? The more she remembers, the more it becomes clear that Jacob, the man who calls himself her husband, is keeping shattering secrets of his own.
But Sara cannot flee alone, leaving innocents behind. She must fight to extinguish The Light.
Sara Adams might have woken up with no memories but the last nine months have seem all kinds of changes in her. She loves her husband Jacob , wanting dearly to have a child with him and diligently follows the teachings of the Church of Light . Yet something is wrong, things are getting confused and no matter how hard Sara tries to be the subservient wife that Jacob needs her personality is changing. For Sara there are so many questions clamouring to be heard but is it really safe for her to voice them?
So many twists, turns and secrets here. I found the first book Into the Light uncomfortable to read at times but the tension and indeed the action is well and truly ramped up here. Yes Sara and Jacob are a couple but it's not exactly a romance and more a suspense driven story or even a thriller as it gathers pace. Jacobs big secret was revealed at the end of the previous book but here we see Sara getting onboard and wow she's one gutsy lady! Yet in the repellent Church there are so many brainwashed individuals that it just astounds this reader how easily the human psyche can become indoctrinated . Yet even more chilling is the way violent characters thrive within this community.
One thing I must mention is the treatment of women in this series. I live in a modern western society and yet unfortunately I'm all too aware that communities, cultures and indeed even countries see nothing wrong with certain traditions. Chastisement , punishment , abuse whatever it's called is wrong but the author doesn't waste time on a soap box , no she showcases it and leaves the reader reeling, full of questions and trying to understand the horror of it all.
This series has kept me gripped but this book just blew me away. Not always an easy read but one that explores so much about humanity and sadly how we all seem to be seeking something .
OH MY LORT!! *spoken in a bad impression of Madea*
So many twists I'm nauseous, but in a good way.
I'd totally join a cult if Jacob was there. Just sayin.
I'm happy I waited to read this series until both books were out because if I'd had to wait I would have been unbearable to live with.
A sexy, suspenseful, and hypnotic blend of Aleatha Romig’s signature stamp of the unexpected. Aleatha Romig is one of those authors who can simply write about anything and yet has a way of you bewitching you with her wicked and sinful prose and she did just that with her newest release, Away from the Dark.
 photo 4ec67e7a505654c94100ffa4716ebe_zpsm2etc2bu.gif “With only a whisper of distance between us, his lips crashed over mine. Their warmth was the fire that ignited my body in a way I no longer wanted to admit. ”
#AwayFromTheDark
In this final conclusion to the duet to The Light Series, secrets and truths are slowly unraveled. Well, they more come into the light. What was seen as the shadows or the grey matter, Aleatha brilliantly puts everything in perspective. Everything about Sara Adams and who she is comes into the light. The man she knew as Jacob Adams will be the driving force as to whether, Sara wants to remain in the light or get away from the dark.
 photo 4ec67e7a505654c94100ffa4716ebe_zpsm2etc2bu.gif “I’ve loved you since the first time I saw you, and now, the more I learn about you, the more I love.”
#AwayFromTheDark1
I cannot fully review the conclusion of the book without spoiling it so I think it’s best to leave this review vague. Reading this book duet should be an experience and a journey. Like the heroine, Sara Adams, readers need to feel and experience all the unexpected twist and turns and revelations. As you put your trust in Aleatha Romig to bring Sara away from the dark, then trust that she will be guiding readers with her beacon of light. Lies, betrayals, secrets, and duplicity will be brought forth in such a meticulous and flawless manner. Aleatha's stunning prose and unexpected turn of events heightens this story onto another level of brilliance.So if you are ready to stepped beyond the shadows, away from the dark, and see the light of a literary masterpiece that is a symphony of romance, mystery, suspense and unexpected surprises then this is one book that you need to read.
I received this in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley. Thank you the author, Aleatha Romig, and the publisher, Thomas and Mercer, for this opportunity.
This is the second instalment in the Light duology. Sara Adams has been an unwilling follower of the cult, the Light, for close to a year. With the sudden return of the memories from her former life, she starts to understand the corrupt and sexist organisation she has unwittingly been a part of. With the return of her awareness comes her wish for freedom. But how will she escape the seemingly irrepressible institution.
Just like the first instalment, the suspense is what drives the momentum of the plot forward. The narrative is constructed in such a way that you, as the reader, continually question what is real and what is right.
The focus on the cult further muddies the waters of what is deemed 'right' and 'wrong'. Throughout my reading of the first book I could not acknowledge how any part of the Light could be good, but this second book has me second-guessing that. The brainwashing and indoctrination the female followers undergo is horrific, as is the sexist notions on how they are to behave. Reading of this was not pleasant or easy. And yet, hearing of the equally as horrific lives some of these females previously led made me wonder: which of their lives was worse? Drug-addicts, prostitutes and the homeless were among the forgotten women re-homed by the Light, and many of these came willingly. The Light can in no way be deemed as a positive institute, but Romig made us question, and question again, everything we thought we knew and how the good/bad binaries are not so easy to define.
The one facet of this I could not forgive or forget, occurred about a third of the way through. Sara's husband, Jacob, reacts horrifically to her re-found freedom. His actions at this time are explained and forgiven by Sara, but not by me. I could not look past the version of himself that emerged and it made it hard for me to visualise or accept him as the hero or love interest of the plot. Again, I believe Romig carefully created such scenes to make the reader question everything about this world, not so far removed from our own. But this question I could never fully comprehend. I would not say she in any way romanticised abuse, but this scene made me wary about trusting the character that could react in such a way, no matter the motive or the feelings his actions conjured inside of himself.
I did not allow this to fully impact my enjoyment of the book, as I believe Romig had no dark motive. My interpretation of this also seems not to be shared by other readers. However, this soured my own experience of the duology, somewhat.
I'm so glad I waited until I could read both of these books back to back because, let me warn readers, this is one UNputdownable suspense plot. Three days later, and my mind is completely frazzled by the complex story Aleatha Romig crafted for her readers. My one question- where does she come up with this stuff? It's refrshingly EPIC!
Away from the Dark is the second installment in a two-part series (that I firmly suspect has more story to be told after the epilogue). But I digress...
Away from the Dark picks up right on the heels of Into the Light. Stella, an investigative reporter who asked one too many questions, peered into one too many dark shadows- finds herself named Sara, married to a member of The Light (religious cult), and all her previous life memories had been erased courtesy of an amnesia drug she'd been inadvertently taking. Starting 'fresh' with no memory, Sara is gradually brainwashed trained to the ways of The Light, their doctrines, lifestyle, expectations for her as a member and as a wife to Brother Jacob. Not knowing what she doesn't know, Sara gradually falls into the life of a sister for The Light, even falls for her husband Jacob in all his protective ways.
Only when she stops taking her 'birth control pills' do her memories start to recover. Her past collides with her present and everything she's lived the past year is a sham... or is it?
This series is so chock full of twists and turns, I can't begin to organize my thoughts except to say, READ THIS DUET! The plot is so well developed, it's seriously like a movie in your head. If you're a fan of stories with trickle-fed plots that leave you guessing from page one to the final words, this one delivers in spades! Aleatha Romig is the queen of taking a plot and weaving it so full of secrets, deception, suspense, and even an unconventional love story, the reader cannot begin to predict the outcome. Expect the unexpected in The Light series, and you'll truly experience a ride of epic proportions! Bravo!
And what is up with that epilogue!
Away from the Dark begins from the ending of the previous book where lies, memories and secrets were unveiled. The revelation about Sara and Jacob is a game changer and I'm afraid I cannot give much away so as not to spoil the first book. I love this sequel because it's more intense, gripping and thrilling and each chapter makes me nervous. My goodness, I'm anxious the protagonists might fall into their own traps or worse.
Sara and Jacob have a wonderful survival skills and I love their teamwork. Even if the romance is secondary in this book, their love and trust for each other helped them to survive. The journey they've been through was terrifying and dangerous and I love they faced it courageously. It's nice to read Dylan's point of view and I hope karma bites him someday. The plot is amazing and well crafted. It's very suspenseful and I'm always eager to know what happens next. The epilogue is twistedly brilliant. It's necessarily open and at least Sara and Jacob got what they deserved. They have challenges to conquer because some fights aren't over yet.. it's just only the beginning
