A story of murder and ghostly hauntings in a cosy 1950s England that is no more.
When a mysterious middle-aged woman moves in next door to St Stephen’s vicarage, she is immediately taken under the wing of Nancy Harper, the Reverend Bernard Paltoquet’s redoubtable housekeeper. As the relationship between the two women develops, however, ‘Mrs Aitch’ begins to entertain suspicions that her new neighbour is not all she seems. Bernard and his friend Dr Robbie MacTavish also begin to think she has a dark secret.
Another stranger to the world of the St Stephen’s vicar comes in the shape of a freakish little man with strange powers which he uses to help Bernard and his friends with their various problems. Other complications ensue, culminating in the brutal slaying of a man on the eve of his wedding and an Old Bailey murder trial. But is the verdict safe?
The prologue of this novel was intriguing and then you forget it as you become immersed in the lives of Lucy Carter, Nancy Harper, Dr. Robbie MacTavish, and Rev. Bernard Paltoquet, of St. Stephen's in the heart of South London's Wandsworth.
The good reverend has been praying constantly for his parishioners. Especially one widow from the volume earlier. Bernie, has been praying so hard that Heaven has heard and decided to aid the cause. Thus we are introduced to 'Gladwin' a slightly different appearance than Michelangelo's Angels. Gladwin has a list of purposes to handle while on Earth's plane.
Bernie becomes accepting of Gladwin but is slightly annoyed that the Angel doesn't want to help Robbie much. Gladwin is here for Lucy.
Meanwhile there is a new neighbor next to the Rectory and she seems to walk under a dark cloud. There seems to be a ghost following her of her dead husband. The lady even uses her maiden name to avoid being connected to her former spouse. Something is wrong though...he has followed her and seems to be back in the flesh...
This book did not go where I thought it would. I enjoyed the novel a good deal but I think this may be the last of the series. And, that leaves us hanging. The most complete volume in the group is Volume one...in it we see the entire lifetime of the characters. Still very readable and fascinating with the Angelic presence.
