I know. Just look at the cover, right? Please allow me to explain.
I was reading a review for some book (I've forgotten which one), and one of the reviewers said her favorite French authors were _______, ________, _________, and Sergeanne Golon. Who? I recognized all the names except that one.
I hunted, and discovered that Golon was the author of Angélique. The cover art made me want to run away, screaming, but the summary made it sound like very interesting historical fiction. I read some reviews on various sites, and was shocked.
Angélique led to the choice of college majors and career directions. She inspired vacations and relocations to France. One 80-year-old reviewer claimed it was the best book she'd ever read. And more than one person loudly announced, "Ignore the cover art!"
I was more than a little intrigued.
Angélique is the first in a series of books, though not all of them were translated into English. The Angélique books tell the life story of Angélique de Sance de Monteloup and are set in 1600s France.
The first book begins when Angélique is 12 years old, a tomboy and the daughter of a noble but impoverished landowner. It continues through her marriage to Comte de Peyrac de Morens, the birth of her two children, the death of her husband, and her struggle to survive as a single mother. (And there's lots of secrets and deceptions and witchcraft and torture and murder plots and...)
I really wonder what could have happened to this book if it had had a different marketing plan. Everything about how it is presented is just so wrong. The cover art of the slutty woman draped in purple velvet, the cover blurb describing Angélique as "the lusty barefoot gutter wench (who) becomes the dazzling mistress of rogues and royalty," the almost-like-a-bodice-ripper extract which is featured on the first page.
That is NOT Angélique!
Readers expecting a bodice ripper with a bit of history would be very disappointed. Yes, there are a few (like maybe 4) s*x scenes, but they are not at all graphic and not smutty in the least. This is an intricate multi-layered story and very well written. I think it even almost qualifies as a literary novel. The writing is well done, the characters are well developed, the storytelling is compelling, and the historical detail is superb.
Though I wouldn't go so far as some reviewers and claim that it is life-changing or the best book I've ever read, I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this epic tale.
Najbolji francuski ljubavni istorijski roman napisan u prošlom veku...
The story of Angélique de Sancé de Monteloup starts with the heroine as a captivating little girl growing up in the marshlands of the Poitou, in a tumbledown old castle too big and too dejected due to the Baron de Sancé's impecuniousness, follows with her arranged marriage to the "Great Lame Devil of Languedoc," a much older and very rich Count named Joffrey de Peyrac, an union that will bring her both happy times and have her experience the luxurious life of the court, and will also put her through a series of crushing tribulations when Peyrac runs afoul of the Church and the high French nobility, jealous of his riches and the impressive new method he's perfected for extracting the metals he owes his fortune to.
The opening of this story, divided in four parts, shows how Angélique isn't educated like any noble of her status would've been, because her father has no money to send her to a convent school, so she stays and runs wild over the castle and the countryside, leading a band of peasant and servant children that adore her, and was shaping up to be a very interesting storyline. But then, some elements emerge that give a "bodice-rippery" feel to this novel, namely that Angélique is very soon sexualised and made into a man-magnet and an instant object of lust for every male she crosses paths with, a fact she's quite aware of and to which she has the cliché "traitorous body" reaction. There are scenes that look to have been included for the titillating value they provide rather than plot necessity, which take away a lot from the writing. I am thinking of three scenes of this type that particularly grated on me for how useless they were within the narrative, that I can guess won't fare well with some readers either.
Another issue is that the writing itself suffers from its abundance of melodrama, several passages are so sentimental and exhibit purple prose, specifically on the part of the heroine, who's a very turbulent woman. As for plotting, the Golons could've done without prolonging the tribulations near the end, and the cliffhanger ending whose outcome isn't difficult to puzzle out.
Nonetheless, comparatively speaking this novel is better plotted and better written than many others in the same category. The titillating bits don't overpower the narration, and the drama isn't over the top; and in characterisation, the Golons have done quite well with the main characters, principally Peyrac.
Do not let the bodice ripper type cover fool you. Of all the novels, I have read in my life, this is the book I always come back to as the book that gave me a love of reading. Love, passion, adventure, mystery, intrigue, villians, heroes, and a headstrong woman ahead of her time who you will fall in love with. This book has everything! The writing style is superb and as you will get lost as you follow the adventures of Angelique from a young girl into motherhood in her quest to find love. A truly amazing set of novels that is tragically out of print, even though it has been translated into over 40 languages!
At the moment I am shelving this one as "historical" as for me calling this book a romance would be a bit of a stretch.
I first read some of the Angelique books when in my late teens/early twenties, & my memory of them is after the first three or four I got a bit sick of them. & I when I read romances at all, I preferred clean ones.
I'll just give a quick summary of the start of the plot.
Angelique & her brothers & sisters, the offspring of an impoverished aristocrat, are running wild. Her father makes an arranged marriage for Angelique with a wealthy, but much older & very disfigured nobleman. Angelique, who is both strong willed & free spirited, finds this very hard to accept & comes
This is an exciting & action-packed tale. I did have problems with a couple of things.
♚ This book was originally written by a husband & wife team, who combined their Christian names to call themselves Sergeanne Golon. Later on, Anne Golon did rewrite some passages in her books. so anyone reading later editions may see something different.
But, & I'm not going to spoiler this, as it appears so early in the book. There is an implication that a servant had enjoyed being gang raped. I wondered if Serge had written that part, but apparently Anne did most of the writing - Serge was the researcher.
♚ Angelique herself This doesn't make it a comfortable read & I would say anyone who needs trigger warnings will not enjoy this book. I'll also mention that this is a high quality book of its kind, but Angelique's bodice literally does get ripped a couple of times!
The positives are that the Golons really make 17th century France come alive. I had very clear mind pictures of every scene. The style is racy except in the Fortunately I was so invested in the story by then, it didn't put me off - & a little realism never hurt anyone!
& the book ends on a cliffhanger that really makes me want to read the next installment. Fortunately I already own this, as the Angelique books are now very hard to get hold of.
Poitou, 1648. Angélique is the daughter of a minor baron, and a very poor one at that. After spending her younger years as a bit of a tomboy, she is eventually married to the fearsome Comte de Peyrac (he dabbles a bit in alchemy and other mysterious doings). It doesn't take long for Angélique to find a man of gold underneath the dross and it's true love forever - that is until some evil baddies plot against Joffrey and…
Well, I can't go much further without spoiling, but our heroine finds herself in a battle for her life, as well as the lives as her two sons and she eventually sinks as low as she can get. Can she drag herself out of the underworld and herself back up again? To what lengths she will go to get her greatest desire, a place at Versailles in the Court of Louis XIV? Perhaps that casket with a deadly secret hidden so long ago just might come in handy right about now?
Wow, what a ride! Angélique's life is a never ending roller coaster of ups and downs (although many of them do get to be a bit too OTT at times), and the Golons do a nice job of working their characters in with known historical events and people. Despite the rather lurid covers this book has, and yes our intrepid heroine does have a number of lovers, the sex is very understated and left pretty much to the reader's imagination. These books were written before the days of being very PC, and there are some plot turns (especially in book two) that might disturb some of today's more *sensitive* readers. These books are very hard to find at a reasonable price, but do persevere, you never know when you'll have that lucky find at the used book store or hit the jackpot at the swap sites.
These books were originally written in French and translated into English. Some editions have been broken up with different titles, so it can be tricky to make sure you have a complete one. The edition I read had about 800 pages, so if you've something that is in the 400 range, you are missing a book between this and the next in the series, Angélique and the King. If you need help sorting them out, there's a very useful website here, http://www.worldofangelique.com/
I first read the first three books when I was 8, and I thought this was the most amazing, entertaining, edge-of-your-seat story that I would ever encounter in my life. Since then, I have read many books that have surpassed these with style and quality, but having re-read them recently, I can honestly say that they are still just as wonderful as they were some 20 years ago.
The heroine of the book, Angelique, is beautiful, brave, intelligent, witty, charming, and the list goes on and on. She rises from dust to riches, falls back into the depths of poverty, only to come out victorious again. Set during the reign of Louis XIV, the story is filled with meticulously researched historical facts and is filled with a wealth of information about Versailles and the court life during the reign of the sun-king.
I have not read all 15 novels (just the first 5), but know enough to say that they do get a little "ridiculous" towards the end, but they never cease to be exciting and fantastic. And you know what? Angelique and Joffrey may just may be my second favorite fictional couple - right behind Scarlett and Rhett.
I love this Series and anyone who does not take the opertunity to read them is missing out in an adventure that will take you from 17th century France to the shores of the Maine Wilderness , from Kings to ,Sultaqns , to Pirates and Indians, not to mention the tangle of religions . The trials and intrigues, of a young girl to a great women of the courts where even the king found her the most beautiful. Husbands Killed , Sons lost , and more adventure than you will ever find while falling under the spell of Angelique. A major 10 stars for this complete series ..... never a boring moment.
I was 15 when my late Mother recommend this collection of light erotic French naughtiness with the Forever Amber style wit . A forgotten classics that that are difficult to find these days. These books of 13 are like Dennis Wheatley's Rider Brooke or The Poldark series & if you can find them there fun
Kroz njeno odrastanje u zamku, autorica pred nas stavlja čitavu lepezu narodnih predanja, seoskih svadbenih običaja, te dašak pomodarstva primamljivog života pariških plemića i velikodostojnika. Time neizostavno biva prikazana i Fronda, pobunjenička revolucija usmjerena na, u to vrijeme petogodišnjeg kralja Luja XIV i njegove pristaše.
I really can't remember when was the first time I've read this book, all I know I was probably to young because it took me a little more time and rereading it to understand why the hell are all women so mad about Joffrey. Still, I absolutely loved the first book, and ultimately the rest of the series. Angelique was what every girl, especially a struggling teenage girl, wanted to be... beautiful, smart, witty, brave and not giving a flying fuck about anybody about herself and her loved ones. Although the writing has lost a bit of its original appeal for me, if I ever have daughter I'll probably buy the books, forbid her ever to read them and then sit back and enjoy as she reads the books in secret and falls in love with Angelique.
This is a totally amazing series of books. Regrettably the covers lead one to believe it is a raunchy series but the depth and scope of historical fact interwoven with fiction is amazing. It is the story of a young french girl of impoverished nobility who is married off to a french Count who wants the land that is part of her dowry. Both of them realise there is an affinity and their love grows strong before they are torn apart by the Inquisition still rife in the court of the young Louis XIV. Her adventures take her down to the very dregs of the Paris underworld to the height of the french court, from the Mediterranean with its diverse politics to the revolt caused by the withdrawal of the Edict of Nantes and finally to the New World, where the fingers of the French court and the papal influence still tries to pull her into a morass of politcal deviousness that threatens to destroy her life and family. An immaculately researched book so cleverly written, it is hard to separate the very real facts from fiction. There is still one book waiting for translation from the French.
This is a book I wanted to read it for so many years. I saw some of Angelique adventures when I was a little girl - during some New Years programs. Since then I've loved it. I intend to read all the series. You can find everything in there: social life, hate, love, war, revange - you name it. It is a really good book.
Set in 17th Century in a France that is much divided with unrest, revolts and suspicion on political and religious matters this book follows the life of Angélique de Sance de Monteloup from when she is 12 years old and quite the tomboy. While hearing of her little adventures we are at the same time treated to a wonderfully detailed and as it happens historically accurate picture of what France was like for the poor nobility burdened with having to pay taxes they cannot afford while also for the sake of their lineage having to look after the peasants on their land. Angélique's father, who has these very same responsibilities along with having to look after numerous children of his, is approached by a mysterious but enterprising man called Molines who proposes to solve his monetary issues by helping him with his mule business at a time when it was frowned upon for nobility to be seen engaging in toil and hard work as living beyond their means in extravagant follies was much more the fashion of things. The Baron de Sance is not very sure that he should be engaging in business but Angélique proving herself to be a child of uncommon intelligence convinces her father about the necessity of taking up this opportunity. Following this the Baron is asked by Molines to apply to much influential relations for certain tax exemption that a noblean like himself could be allowed to have. The Baron and Angélique attend a gathering where the Prince de Condé is present and while the Baron is off trying to convince his peers to grant him exemptions Angélique finds herself witnessing the planning of a plot by Prince de Condé to kill the young King Louie XIV and in fact manages to foil it to. It is something that will have a great effect on not only France's but her own future too though she had no idea of knowing it at the time.
I will admit that though I was sufficiently engaged during these recountings of Angélique's youth, mostly because of how much I was learning of France's history and its people during that era (a subject I know very little about), I did not think this was a series I was going to love for no character had as of yet managed to engage me. It wasn't that the protagonist wasn't interesting - just that she was just too beautiful and too headstrong and too clever for me to have any chance to sympathise with her. But after Angélique finds herself being married off to a man she has never met which has been arranged by her father through the machinations of Molines things start to get really interesting. For one thing we begin to get an idea of why Molines would bother engaging in business with a poor nobleman who he has to constantly help in money matters. Moreover this new man in the picture - Angélique's husband the Comte de Peyrac is a singularly interesting character and not everything is as it seems. Moreover as Angélique and her husband find themselves tangled more and more into the political intrigues of the time due to the delicate issue of being richer than the King himself and the Comte being an outspoken scientist at a time when the Church could still burn people at the stake for witchcraft we begin to greatly fear for their safety because it appears that someone is bent on causing their downfall using all the circumstances of Angélique's youthful misadventures and the Comte's arrogance and impatience in dealing with narrow-minded fools who call chemistry alchemy and accuse the Comte of hiding the Philosopher's Stone from the State. All this leads to the most exciting climax set in a court scene that has got to be one of the best and most frustrating things I have read in my life. Best because Anne Golon's narrative remains taut, tense and suspenseful despite the long scene and frustrating because the arguments that are offered are just so ridiculous and it makes one feel quite sad for the fate of humanity. I really wanted to smash my head against the wall each time the other lawyer spoke. On the other hand the lawyer helping the characters we favour was the first to become my favourite character in the series. Forgive me for descending into incoherency but ...squeee he's so awesome <3 I hope we makes an appearance in the future~ Ok I'm done.
My parting shot to you all is that Marquise of the Angels with its part Phantom of the Opera and part Count of Monte Cristo like leanings is sure to delight any history buff so if you spot it in a shop lying tattered and lonely - pick it up and give it a try!
Angelique - Ex Sergeanne Golon - 1st in series Louis XIV has assumed power in France, and in the province of Poitou, Angelique de Sance de Monteloup, daughter of an impoverished nobleman, runs wild with the peasant lads and stable-boys.
Too soon involved in the intrigue and lawlessness rife in seventeenth century France, Angelique is married to the sinister Comte de Peyrac. Rich and powerful, holding the key to some of the deepest mysteries of science, he arouses her body and mind and makes her Queen of his Court of Love at Toulouse. Angelique enters a life of sublime ecstasy - an ecstasy soon to be shattered by her husband's enemies
Imprisoned by the Inquisition and tried for witchcraft, the Comte is sentenced to death. Fighting desperately for his life, Angelique haunts the menacing corridors of the Royal Palace...but, on the day her second child is born, she watches transfixed with horror, as her husband is burned at the stake.
Swearing to kill the men who had caused her husband's death, penniless and without a name, her only weapons her beauty and courage, Angelique plunges into the underworld of Paris...
Rich in historic detail, suspense and with a wonderful love story, I devoured this series once I'd found it. I remember another girl in my class was reading them too and we spent our homeroom periods talking about them. Fabulous books for lovers of historic/romantic fiction.
I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars but it deserves 10! The characters were amazing, unique, completely fascinating. The writing draws the reader in and the flow and pace are spot on. The story itself kept me absolutely riveted. It was beautiful. I seriously could not put the book down. I sobbed at parts, my heart raced at others, I was so utterly and completely invested in these characters. 5 days after finishing the book I still cannot stop thinking about it. Brilliant!!! The only criticism I have is the cover-which is meaningless but it was so odd. This book is long out of print and I had to purchase a used copy from an Amazon seller (copies sell for $20-$200 depending on quality of the copy). The covers of these books (written in 1962, translates from French, and reprinted a few times with different publishing companies through the years) look like an old time cheesy romance novel. Do not be deceived. Angelique is not fluff in the least. It's an excellent historical novel, a love story, a character study, and much more. Definitely not in sync with the silly covers. It's true you can't judge a book by its cover! Lucky for me and other fans, Angelique is a series of several books about the title character, the charming and spirited Countess Angelique (de Sance) de Peyrac. I cannot recommend this book enough! It will not disappoint. I just ordered Book 2 and cannot wait to see the mailman at my door!
I love the Angelique series; no doubt Angelique’s role model is the formidable Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, who I consider the greatest Queen of all times, she is undoubtedly my heroine.
The books are amazing in their attention to even the smallest detail; every little bit is written about, nothing much escapes the attention of Anne Golon the Author.
I learnt so very much from the series. The books dig deeply into French History; in such a lively manner that you feel you are very much a part of the entire proceedings, waiting for the next episode.
Sadly, the Angelique books are really difficult to come by, which is a pity, I would have liked to have read all the books in the series.

I read this book when I was 13 or so, and as crazy as it may sound it changed my tender life back then. You see after reading nine books in this long series (and I see now there are even more of them), I became obsessed with 17th century France and the reign of Louis XIV. After Angelique, I started to study French, read everything from the Lettres de Ninon de Lenclos au marquis de Sévigné to Voltair's "The Age of Louis XIV" That is why I give it five stars. To be fair though Three musketeers opened the era to me, just as Walter Scott drew me into Middle Ages where I stayed.
ČITATELJSKI IZAZOV - NASLOVI PREMA SLOVIMA MOGA IMENA (19 - A) Woo-hoo! Velik dio knjige priča o detaljima francuske povijesti. Nisam baš sve uspjela popratiti jer me povijest općenito, pa s tim i francuska povijest, jako malo zanima. Ultimativna romantika. :D I da, prvo sam mislila kako neću čitati nastavke, ali sad me baš zanima kako će Anđelikina priča dalje ići.
[With all the confusion over the different translations (into Russian) and the Old Editions vs. New Editions debacle, I'm not sure what I've actually just read, but I suspect the old one bc it was still part of a 13-book series.]
OK, so the thing is, this series is, like, Gone with the Wind's pretty French cousin. It suffers from the same problems - racism, gay people are creeps, eyeroll-worthy romance (I like de Peyrac! when he's talking about science and progress, not being a romantic novel cover of himself), dudes being dudes etc. just w. even MORE gross non-con that's made me drop the book at least once - but on the flip side, has the same strong core in the form of a brave, LIKEABLE AS HELL, rebellious heroine as opposed to Strong Female Characters of nowadays. I could've done w. more female friendship here, but on the other hand, I love this historical period and I didn't expect the book to be at least half interesting historical detail and not 100 % boring romantic cliches.
'Он много раз говорил мне: «Скажите ей, что я ее люблю. В ней была вся моя жизнь. Я же — увы! — буду в ее жизни лишь эпизодом, но я верю, что она сумеет найти свою дорогу»'
Also, the book(s) may be very dated, but the characters are lively (as opposed to, say, Heyer's static PC Cardboards), and a radically better and improved successor is yet to come.
