This special omnibus edition inlcudes both The Silver Brumby and Elyne Mitchell's last brumby story called Wild Echoes Ringing. A truly lovely book with chapter heading illustrations by Margaret Power.
Elyne Mitchell is an Australian author best known for her Silver Brumby children's series, which tells the story of brumbies that roamed the Snowy Mountains in the Australian Alps, in particular a pale brumby named Thowra.
In 1988, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her services to literature, as well as an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Charts Sturt University in 1993.
I consider The Silver Brumby to be the second book that I ever read. My first book was Blinky Bill, I was part way through it when I considered reading The Silver Brumby, but I was torn between wanting to read it and the fear of starting it, since it was only my second book. So my mother sat and read the first chapter to me. Then she had to go cook telling me she would read me the rest later. So there I sat, waiting, and waiting, and finaly I picked up the book and read it myself, and absalutly loved it.
The story is about the beautiful silver Brumby Thowra, born to the wise mere Bel Bel who because of his colouring will be haunted by the stock men and envied by other stallions. We followe his life from the very moment he is born in the South Ramshead into a spring storm. As Thowra grows we learn about his world and the freedom, joy, and danger that it holds. From growing up in his father's herd, to fighting his adversaries, making a herd of his own, and fulfilling his destiny, the reader is swept up into a story about friendship, loyalty, and kindness.
Elyne Mitchell's description of the Blue Mountains and the horses and animals that live there is beautiful and compelling. The horses consider the Cascades to be their home, while also acknowledge the fact that it is only truly understood by the animals that have lived on them for millennia, much like the way that most Australian's have only lived in the southern land for just over two centuries after the English took it from the Kooris.
The story of the horses of the Cascade's soon became one of my favourite and most loved peaces of literature. And ever since I have reread the tale of a ghost horse, mountain chases, and loyal friends many times.
To haunted Thowra, loyal Storm, wise Bel Bel, the powerful Brolga, Elyne Mitchell, and all of the characters in this book, thank you for giving my childhood something wonderful.
The Silver Brumby is one of the most thrilling horse stories of all time. As soon as I begun I became enchanted with the magesticness of all those wild bush brumbies and the other wild life of course! I seriously felt as if I couldn't put these books down when I began. But for my belief I would think that this first book of the series is the best of them, mainly because it is the book that introduced the whole Silver Brumby thing. A HUGE thank you to Ellyne Micheal for writing this beautiful stories. :)
I read this when I was a little girl, and it's also one of my Mum's favourite books. A pretty good horse story! I love the role that the Australian Alps, the Snowy Mountains plays in it. In particular the seasonal changes, they are written beautifully. I was never a horse-mad person, but this book is brilliant at making you appreciate the beauty & power of horses and their role in Australian history.
As a wonderful book,Thowra is the most exited out of all of the horses and fouls. The white, bright beautiful main character is controlled by his enthusiastic behaviour. There is danger in the Dystopia which is where man sleep and stay.
One of the main character is a white brumby foal of extreme happines
