Stake Dolan has worked as a firefighter for almost a decade. He knows he’s loud, brash, and occasionally abrasive, not that he tries to be. Sometimes, he just blurts stuff out without thinking. His thoughtless words get him in trouble, and the chief orders him to help with the clean-up of some of the local hiking trailheads. At one of them, Dolan meets Cecil Rochette. The friendly man makes a pass at him, but Dolan quickly shuts him down. A few of his fellow firefighters are gay, but he is not. Still, while he doesn’t know why, there’s something about the guy that arouses him. When Cecil keeps popping up in his path, interrupting his life, he begins to wonder what it’d be like to give in to the mischievous man’s advances. Will doing something so different be worth the price, especially when no one has been able to tolerate his mouth for long?
This was not the best story in the series, but was still enjoyable. I felt it was mor of a filler so that Cecil could get his story, but it didn't have an impact on the series story arc. There is no grand mysteries or bigger action in this title. It's a straight forward story about a shifter meeting his mate and how he goes about to win said mate. There are obstacles, of course, all of them conected to the human mate. He has no brain-to-mouth-filter, he is straight, knows nothing about shifters and there are secretly homophobic people at his work place. Out of these one would think the "I'm straight" would be the hardest to over come, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
The MC's are not as well developed as some of Charlie Richards' other characters, but I guess you can't always be on top. To me Cecil came a cross as egotistical in his reasoning with very little concern about how things would affect his mate, on the other hand There really isn't much that shows emotion building up between the MC's I guess one could claim that is due to the "insta-mate" side of this shifter world.
If you want a story with deep connection between lovers and where love, not lust is in the foreground, then this is not your story. If you on the other hand like characters with creepy dental fetiches (or was that just me?), shifters that will get into their mate's pants at any cost and/or like descriptions of bulging muscles and multiple orgasms, this book is for you.
For me it was an enjoyable time where I didn't have to engage my brain too much.
While another cute addition to this long running series, I'd definitely have to say it's also unremarkably unmemorable.
On a good note, while the usual catch phrases are abound (my mate, my human etc) they didn't feel like an overwhelmingly amount in this particular edition. Or perhaps it just doesn't bother me on this particular day.
Could not put down!! Wonderful paranormal romance, any of Charlie Richards books are a guaranteed good read, from start to finish, a great book!! Michelle Walker
On a major re-re-read of the Stone Ridge world. I usually enjoy Charlies' short stories and novellas (the occasional one is a clunkier) but I have found that the best way to read them is to series binge and read them in the recommended reading order for the 'world' instead of by series. This gives a much more satisfying read with a more consistent plot line and world. Even the clunkers become acceptable as a small part of the whole. The characters are still good, and as usual Charlie uses stereo types with skill and develops characters indirectly. The only characters that develop depth are those who appear and then reappear frequently. As individual reads? 2 or 3 - though 3 is more common.
This was a very entertaining read and I really did like both Cecil and Dolan (which Cecil only referred to by his first name, Stake) :). Unfortunately, there were bigots in this story also, which I could really do without, but luckily they didn't interfere too much with the story. The ending was sweet and I was happy for Dolan finally being able to have family with Cecil and his brothers. Nicely written and smooth paced story. Very enjoyable. =)
Through the whole book I expected something to come of the apology letter that Dolan had to write to Lyle. I thought there would be some sort of explanation of why he says stupid stuff like he wasn’t around people a lot as a kid or something. But nope nothing. Oh well.

This is a double GFY – sort of. Stake has definitely never been attracted to men and Cecil usually goes for women. So when Cecil finds out his mate is Stake and that he’s straight, he has his work cut out for him.
Stake is also rather brash and Cecil has to work on his mouth to brain filter.
Like the other books in the series, things move along quickly being as the mate bond is there and very strong between them.
There are some funny pieces of dialog and we get to see a few of the other shifters from the past – like Lyle – and meet some new faces who will likely show up in future books.
If you’re a fan of the series this is another great story, as a standalone, it’s not my favorite from this author.
I really love this series. I have read everyone of the books in all the different series that work together. I think that this author does a great job of making sure that each series works well with the other series. I thought this book was well written and quite enjoyable. I look forward to what comes next.
I really want to go with 3.5 stars, but had to decide on 3. Why not push it to 4, simply because I wanted more. I wanted to see what happens at the cabin in the woods. I wanted to see Dolon's reaction to Cecil's shift. I wanted more.
Egotistical wolf shifter Cecil manipulated and lied by omission to his human mate Dolan. Weird that Cecil wanted a pet kitten - his inner animal wasn't that strong. Cecil and his brothers were just too juvenile and didn't even act like adults.
Ugh. I thought that Cecil pressured Stake way too fast and much. He needed to slow his roll and let Stake get used to things. It felt too forced to me and I wasn't a happy reader.
Es gibt sogar ein bisschen mehr Story zwischen den expliziten Szenen als erwartet 😉 Das gefällt mir gut. Die Geschichte liest sich gut und in einem Rutsch durch.
