The Last Favor

Rate this book
Three years ago Andrew Wilson and Flynn Barnett were in a relationship, until Flynn made a mistake that nearly cost Andrew his life. Andrew walked away from the FBI, his home, and his partner, and started over back in Montreal, running a restaurant.

Fast forward to the present and Andrew is knee-deep in preparations for his sister’s wedding. When an ex-colleague calls to ask for one last favor, the last person he expects to walk through his door is Flynn, in need of a place to stay. Only thing is, Andrew can’t say no.

Two weeks of wedding hijinks bring back all the old feelings that have simmered below the surface. Caught in a cycle of fighting and making up, the two men try to figure out if there’s anything they can salvage. And even if there is, Andrew can’t be sure this time will be any different.

I kept wondering why Flynn wanted Andy back when Andy was such a childish tool. And Andy's family was all overprotective when ... Flynn really didn't do anything ... Idk. Bad opening, bad reason for leaving. Flynn's here begging for forgiveness when it's Andy who was the one I kept thinking was in the wrong.

And the 3rd person, present. Sooo confusing bc it felt heap hoppy, even tho it wasn't and it really made me skim a lot.

Not for me at all.

Second chance is one of my favorite themes, and I liked Meg Harding’s writing before, which was the main reason for me to request the ARC.

Now, I thought the ‘original’ conflict that made Andrew walk away from the FBI was adequately presented to us readers in the earlier chapters. However, the reunion felt a little stiff for me. Their conversations felt stilted when it was about ‘that night’. Plus Flynn seemed to harbor deep upset towards Andrew’s walking away from him three years previously. So I wasn’t really sure that both Andrew and Flynn had actually ‘sorted things out’ before they finally decided that they would give their relationship another chance.

I enjoyed the wedding preparations though – it was crazy but fun to read. Even if it gave Andrew headaches. It felt real and relatable. I liked Andrew’s family members, even when they tried to starve Flynn in the beginning as way of solidarity to Andrew *laugh*.

Hmmm, well...I'm just not sure what to say?
It wasn't great but it wasn't terrible.
Lots of telling and very little showing...especially with the first few scenes...so much was left out, it was hard to fill in the blanks.
Bar scene intro *blink* one-year relationship status *blink* 3 years post break up.
Ultimately, I'm glad this wasn't my first book by Harding.
Because I don't think I would seek out any others.
However, I've read some solid stuff from her.
So I won't give up!

I honestly believe there is a time and place for everything and I honestly believe there is a time and place for every book to be read. I hadn’t planned on reading this book yet but I was having a really bad day where I picked up three books that failed to grab my attention and then I met Andy.

I met Andy and I met Flynn and I was tugged into a lovely romantic story, my first from Meg Harding, and I fell in love.

The story is set up in a unique way being that we know Andy and Flynn had been in a relationship and are going to be reunited after there years. Getting the beginning, the middle and the end of that relationship was short, sweet and so damn painful. I get why Andy left, I get why he was mad and I get that he overreacted but we do things in the heat of the moment that isn’t always the best thing, or maybe it is, because distance makes the heart grow fonder?

“I need to ask for a favor.”

“A favor…”

“For me. Last one, I promise. Consider this your debt finished.”

Andy is such a good guy that when he’s called by his friend Clint and asked for a favor he gives in. He is up at his parents’ house, getting the house and yards ready for his sister’s upcoming wedding when Clint asks him to house an ex-agent who needs a place to stay. Andy hesitates but knows he owes Clint but what Andy doesn’t realize is who will be the man standing on the other side of the door waiting to be his guest.

I laughed out loud at not only Andy’s reaction to Flynn being there but his mothers. Actually, Andy’s whole family are nothing but a constant source of comedy relief and support throughout this story. But the feelings that Andy and Flynn still have for one another are what kept my heart in a vice wondering when they would actually talk and tell each other how they feel.

You never came back, so maybe it was my turn to follow. You get that? Don’t you? I had to see.

So yeah, Andy left Flynn in a pretty crappy kind of way and it not only broke Flynn it broke Andy as well. He never expected to see Flynn again and poor Flynn expected Andy to come home but when he didn’t, he pulled a favor of his own and decided he needed once last chance to be happy with the only man who could be his partner.

Ugh.

… but there’s a whole other level of intimacy to the small stuff that he misses in an entirely different way. He doesn’t know how to explain it.

These two just about killed me with the hurt and the mixed want they have. It was endearing to see them know one another; from the way they like their food to just knowing the depth of intimacy that only comes from being with someone in every way. Sure, there is a healthy amount of angst in the story but the best thing about Andy and Flynn is they talk things through. Maybe they should have talked three years ago about what went down but hindsight is always a bitch and in life you make mistakes.

Andy’s sister’s wedding is the fuel for this story. It was so much fun to see all the extended family arrive and know Flynn from before. It was fun to set the boys out on errands for trees, flowers and watch them attempt to take down and hang a butt load of lights to turn the yard into a winter wonderland from back in the day. It was lovely to see both men’s reactions to the wedding and to have them realize they really have been morons about… well, everything.

“We can’t pretend we didn’t lose years... It happened, and it’s done. This is starting over.”

The Last Favor is a sweet and sensual second chance romance. It’s a story of two men who loved one another so much, they lost sight of what being a partner in all forms really meant. It’s a story about taking a chance on a second chance at a happily ever after, even if that means calling in favors and making good on the ones owed.

This didn't work for me at all.

The third person-present tense was jarring, the time jumps at the beginning made me frustrated and didn't let me get a feel of their relationship.

Andy was immature and his mendling family was almost a caricature. I found the conflict of the story ridiculous too.

Nope, didn't work at all. Sorry:(

I have to say the title to this book is truly fitting. I was really sketacle about this book when it started out as "the beginning", "the middle", and "the end". All those where was just small glimpses into the life of Andrew and Flynn. I had preconceived judgments of Flynn from those short glimpses and as it turns out I was very wrong about him.

At first I thought Flynn was this self absorbed individual that did not think it was necessary to inform his partner both on and off the job as a FBI agent what was happening in the take down that they was working. I felt like he left out vital information that Andrew should have made aware of instead of trying to go for authentic emotions. Later in the book I realized once again I was wrong.

I believed that Andrew was truly justified in leaving Flynn high and dry along with the FBI after the outcome of the raid and all the information that Andrew learned was intentionally left out in the briefing. But again I was wrong.

This book was good at making me believe one thing to later learn it was the opposite and I loved every minute of it.

I loved the fighting, making up, learning from their mistakes the hard way, and eventually if Andrew and Flynn was going to try to make their previous relationship work again and if they did would it be the same or would they come out of it with hard lessons learned and stronger for it.

This book is a book that makes the characters learn from their mistakes and it also shows that the blame of why Flynn and Andrews blew up in their faces was not just one of their faults but both. Both did things wrong and both has to do what they have to in order to own those mistakes and make the necessary changes within themselves to make their relationship work.

This was a very good book. It kept my attention from start to finish even though I was skeptacle the first couple of pages. I am so glad that I read this book. I found it to be a highly enjoyable read and would definitely recommend others to read it.

I was given this book from inked rainbow reads for an honest review

REVIEW @Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

The Last Favor was my first book by Meg Harding and overall it was good reading. Being a fan of second chance at love stories, I couldn't miss this novella, plus I'm always looking for new to me authors.

The blurb tells you pretty much everything you need to know so I'm not going to linger on the plot more.

First of all what I liked: the secondary characters were the winners for me, I like big families like the one of Andrew's, and in the chaos the preparations for his sister's wedding, they were crazy, frenetic and a little protective and meddlers, just how I like families to be.

I liked how the author laid out the starting part, showing me how Andrew and Flynn met, how they were close in their relationship, and how this ended and why. It gave me all the facts soon, allowing me to make up my own mind on the characters. At the same time I saw their mistakes and their stupidity. Let's be honest, Andrew is forty but a little childish, he should have approached the situation that led them to the end of their relationship (but not of their love) in a different way and not leave Flynn with nothing said.

What I didn't like: first of all the verbal form, I often had issues with the use of the present, in this case especially it put a stop to my reading, a slowness that left me not so convinced of the whole story. At times I was a little bored too. Moreover IMO this novella needed to be more engaging, I wanted more of them together and alone. I wanted more explanations between them because at the end they overcame three years apart without even a deep chat. It basically misses a good tempo.

Still, I found The Last Favor a good story and I'll surely read more of this author works. Something in the style caught my attention.

The cover art by Bree Archer is well done and so bright it showed me hope

This story was sweet and light. Andrew approaches Flynn in a bar one night and they have a one night stand. The next day he finds his one night stand in his boss’ office and is told they are now partners.

This story time jumps a bit, so there really isn’t any relationship development. I was just told that they ended up being partners and lovers, and everything was fine. Until Flynn made a secret, strategic move on a case they were on, which blew up in everyone’s face.

The reader is treated to the cliffsnotes version of their romance, and then Andrew is licking his wounds three years later after leaving the FBI and becoming a chef. His sister’s wedding is in two weeks and he is asked for a favor from his ex-FBI buddy Clint. Who should happen at the doorstep the next day, but Flynn.

I didn’t really get into this couple. I enjoyed them individually, and I think I could have really loved Flynn if I knew him better. The personality that I did see worked for me. I thought they could be good for each other, but the development wasn’t really there to convince me. Andrew is more laid back and Flynn is a bit flighty but uptight. I can totally relate to Flynn. Independent and just wants things to go the way he wants without any real input from anyone else. This pisses Andrew off, and was something that was mentioned as being a problem when they were together, but it’s not really something they work through during this story. Together, or apart, I don’t know. They worked for the most part, but they could have worked just as well with other people.

I did enjoy their arguments. I enjoyed their heat. I liked that Andrew stuck up for himself and didn’t fold to his feelings. He needed to be heard, and he made sure that his issues were out in the open. I just wasn’t convinced that they had worked anything out, and the problems that made Andrew leave weren’t really resolved.

Overall, this story was fine. It was interesting enough that I didn’t get distracted. I would have preferred more relationship development, and more character development for Flynn. The writing style was good, and the overall plot was decent. I would read more from this author.

A light read with reunited lovers, with some serious moments. I would recommend it to readers who want something light, but not overly fluffy.

In this second chance at love story, Andrew is tricked by a former co-worker into providing his ex-boyfriend and FBI partner hospitality for two weeks. During this time, Flynn needs to prove to Andrew that he is worth a second chance…but he will also have to deal with Andrew’s family who isn’t thrilled at his untimely arrival.

I really liked the first part of this story where we get to watch Andrew and Flynn meet each other after Andrew’s co-workers bet him he can’t pick the sexy man up at the bar. I am a sucker for one night stands that have a habit of reappearing at the most inconvenient times, and this one does! I also liked seeing these two men as FBI agents as they work together to take down a drug ring. Despite this story starting off with a bang, I quickly found myself losing interest.

With the whole premise of the story being that Flynn wants a second chance, it may have helped me want to see them reconnect had I seen them actually be a real couple beforehand. As the story starts off, I expected to find myself falling for these characters as they fell for each other – except, I never saw that happen before I realized that we had fast forwarded three years and Flynn is asking for another chance. I could accept this had I felt as if there had been something more in their relationship beforehand, but instead much of what we learn after they reunite is that even the simplest things about these guys as individuals was unknown by the other. So I couldn’t stop wondering what these two saw in each other and why Flynn so desperately wanted it back. How can you want something that you never really had? Had the author downplayed their earlier relationship to being something of just a one-night stand or a couple of one-night stands and the story continued three years after the incident, I may have found myself more engaged. Instead, I kept thinking “why?”

The Last Favor by Meg Harding is a story about a second chance at romance. It’s a quick, easy read that is mixed with humor, a bit of action, a lot of snark, and some sweet moments. The books starts off with a bang, literally since Flynn and Andrew have a one-night stand, and things take off from there. Meg Harding’s writing took a bit to get used to, but once you get past the first few pages, you definitely fall into a rhythm.

I will say that once we see a bit of Flynn and Andrew in action—they’re FBI agents—partners at work and in life, it becomes pretty apparent that while they have some good qualities, they don’t seem much like any FBI agents I’ve ever come across. Flynn is more than a little unlikable at first and after a falling out between him and Andy that keeps them separated for more than three years, when he pops back up again (bizarrely in the middle of Andrew’s sister’s wedding preparations) he’s not much better. I found both characters rather childish and immature, Flynn more so than Andrew. I really felt like the secondary characters were way over the top ridiculous to the point where they were all annoying (except for Andrew’s father).

There are some sweet moments between Flynn and Andrew though as they try to mend their hurts and move forward. Neither man has stopped loving the other, and when Harding shows them being serious and acting like grown-ups, it’s rather heartwarming. I’m not a fan of forty year old’s spending almost an entire book not communicating and acting like they’re in junior high.

Just to be clear, there’s really nothing wrong with Meg Harding’s writing. There are some moments of witty banter, the story flows well, and if you don’t mind your characters acting a bit (or a lot in some instances) over the top, then this is definitely a book for you. This is a fun, quick and easy read though and if that’s what you’re looking for, The Last Favor will hit the spot.

Good read, liked the beginning as well as the progressing story, but no idea what the author wanted to say with the epilogue.
Nevertheless, the writing style was engaging and I'll looking forward to reading the next book by this author.

“A second chance doesn't mean anything if you didn't learn from your first.” ~ Anurag Prakash Ray

Feeling betrayed by his lover, Andy Wilson, of 'The Last Favor' by Meg Harding, ended their relationship three years ago. Andrew was hurt both physically and emotionally by what he considered a lack of faith. The only way Andrew could deal with it was to leave Flynn and start over. The thing is, he also left his heart behind.

When Flynn shows up at his door it's a shock, but Andrew can't turn him away because he's already promised to let him, or at least someone who needed to stay with him for a while. He begrudgingly lets Flynn in. Breaking up with someone doesn't just involve the couple's feelings; it also involves those of the whole family. After months of watching Andrew hurting, their reaction to Flynn is cool at best. In fact, they don't try to cover their anger and distain at all, even to the point of not cooking enough for him to eat breakfast the next morning. To complicate matters, Andy's family are busy preparing for his sister, Harley's, wedding. Flynn couldn't have picked a more chaotic time to show up. Everyone is on edge, especially Harley, who has turned into Bridezilla, resulting in funny and sometimes disturbing times. Through it all, Andy does his best to help prepare for what they all hope is the most perfect wedding ever. Not quite knowing what to do with Flynn, Andy tries to include him in the festivities with varied results.

In many ways, Flynn is the same as he was three years ago. He's still impatient, irritating, and undiplomatic at times, but there are some other things Andy notices that indicate he has changed. One example is when he remains silent when he would normally have a snarky remark. Also, Flynn is reluctant to bring up their past, but when he finally does, he tells Andy that he is afraid of saying something wrong and pushing him even further away. It becomes obvious that Flynn is just as devastated as Andy about what happened. Also, like Andy, Flynn still loves him. If a reunion for them is in the cards, it will heavily depend upon their ability to sort it all out, figure out what went wrong, and avoid the things that caused problems to begin with. Unless they learn how to communicate effectively, their second chance will truly be their last.

This is a story about two men in love, who let a mistake separate them before doing everything they could to remedy the rift between them. Andy is the “good boy” whose family is very important to him; Flynn is the “bad boy” whom the “good boy” can't resist, but a strong love binds them together. I enjoyed the first section about how they met and why they split up the most. It was full of danger, excitement, and sadness. The second part was mostly about the wedding, sometimes even more than about Andy and Flynn. There were several instances where Meg found ways to tickle my funny bone; I truly enjoyed the humor. If you are looking for a good book with little angst, humor, the insanity of pre-wedding arrangements, and a happy ending, this story just may fit the bill. Thanks, Meg, for giving Andy and Flynn their second chance.

Review can be read at It's About The Book

I really liked this book. I feel like for a Novella length book I got a whole lot of story. The story is split into parts of the MC’s relationship. The beginning and middle are shorter but give you a good idea of their personalities and problems in their relationship. The end Is the longest portion of the book. I think it maybe felt a bit choppy at first and I certainly would have liked some of the wholes filled in. However, I also felt like the way it was presented moved the book along at a nice pace to get to the reunion since that’s the part I most wanted to read about. Last Favor was a compelling quick read with great characters. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book.

Andy and Flynn are reunited after a break up years before because a former colleague calls to ask for a favor. He tells Andy he needs an ex-agent to be housed in an undisclosed location. Andy opens the door to learn the x-agent just happens to be the love of his life and his ex boyfriend, Flynn. Before the day that tore them apart Andy and Flynn were partners with the FBI. After that day Andy leaves his job and returns to Canada to put his life back together. The timing is especially bad because Andy’s staying with his family while they prepare his mother’s house for his sister’s wedding. The forced cohabitation proves to be uncomfortable initially but it’s just what these two stubborn men need since they obviously still love each other.

Flynn is just the type of character that intrigues me. He’s somewhat socially awkward. Curt and gruff. Difficult and quirky but brilliant and totally endearing. Andy is a perfect balance for him. He’s more likable and easy going. I enjoyed all of their time together on page. I enjoyed their reunion. On one hand they know each other so well. On the other they learn things they never knew about the other. They’ve also changed in subtle ways. There’s a lot of pain there between them that. They need to have the discussion they should have had years ago before Andy left but that’s easier said than done. It’s still raw after years apart and Flynn has to work out exactly what he wants to say to Andy since it’s his last chance to get him back and get it right. Their back and forth banter is brutal in the most entertaining way. Lots of smack talk but said with so much familiarity and affection it can’t help but show they still care. They also have their sweet moments of honesty. Flynn and Andy truly love each other. They just need to get past the hurt.

The family aspect of this story was pretty fun also. Andy’s mom kept sending the guys on impossible errands or tasks for the wedding that had me smiling. Lots of family around just makes a difficult situation that much harder. I laughed out loud a few times in this book. I adored the MCs. This book was a sweet and endearing read about two quirky flawed characters who are getting their second chance at getting it right. I particularly liked the balance of romance and humor in this one. Worth the read IMO.

This 125 page novella is made up of two vignette both set in the past, but with chopped information that is needed to set up the body of the book that is set in present day.

I have to be honest, I had high hopes for this story, but it really fell flat for me.

The first vignette, I call it that because it starts and stops so quickly, and while we get them meeting, there is not much else.

Then, the second one takes place about a year later, another snap shot of Andrew and Flynn living together in some sort of messy but happy bliss.

Then the body starts three years later… After Andrew walks out of his life and his love and never looks back.

See this is the part that bothers me, Yeah, Flynn scared him with his dramatic take down, but if you look at the big picture you got it. And as an FBI agent Andrew should have seen that. Instead, he throws a tantrum and walks away from a job he loves, and a man he claims he loves with ever bit of his heart, really, really?. And really the FBI is just going to let him walk away….

Then we have Flynn, same thing, loves him but just lets it go for three years?!

Maybe a week to calm down but really? sorry.

Then we have this two week period, in which all parties involve seriously dislike Flynn but allow him to stick around.

But during this time Flynn and Andrew rekindle. Now I did like this grovel, rekindle part, when we FINALLY got to learn about these two people who are supposed to be in love, but for me too little too late.

This is a quick read at about the size of a novella. If you are looking for a short easy read this will be no problem for you. The start of the story is very quick and a bit choppy but it allows you to see how Flynn and Adam meet and how their relationship really started before tragedy and some pig headedness splits them up. The two together are rather funny and you can see small glimpses of how well they should work together. However you don't’ get a full feel for how they are as a couple before the story jumps three years after they split up.

While both Flynn and Adam have some really sweet and great qualities. They both came off rather childish to me with how they react to the events that have brought them to the present time. I had a hard time seeing them as FBI agents with how they handle the situation between them. Even the secondary characters have this trait and I struggled with how no one seemed level headed enough to actually get either one of them to communicate openly. There are some rather humorous parts and some touching moments. I never really felt invested in their happily ever after since they never really addressed the issues they had, it just gets glossed over a bit to get to the HEA. But it is a fun and easy read so if you are looking for something that wraps up quickly this shouldn’t be a problem for you.

When Andrew unwittingly allows his former partner to crash the family reunion before his wedding, Finn and Andrew have one last chance at a future together.

I enjoyed this short romance without ever becoming fully invested in it. Finn and Andrew’s back story is interesting, but with Andrew narrating the story, readers never see Finn’s perspective. This exaggerates the misunderstanding that leads to Andrew and Finn’s first break-up, but it never properly allows readers to understand why Andrew is still hung up on Finn.

The chaos of the family wedding preparations is fun, but there were a couple of times that I felt sorry for Andrew’s sister as his personal drama seemed to overshadow her wedding.

Ultimately, this is a fun, short second chance romantic comedy. The characters are likeable, the wedding adds some excitement and I enjoyed the romance. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Inked Rainbow Reads.

M/M second chance romance
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Flynn and Andy... their story is jumbled and not really about them. I found that this had a promising premise, but just didn't deliver for me.

While I can understand why Flynn did what he did, but in the end, this story seemed to be a little about Flynn and Andy and mainly about Andy's sister's wedding.

While I did like that you were able to see how their relationship began and ended, it was not very cohesive. It seemed to jump around and then, once they were in the same spot for the story, it really only glimpsed at their issues, relationship and feelings.

Overall, this was a short story with extreme potential.

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. I finished it one sitting and despite two pretty big flaws, The Last Favor was a fantastic read. First, I never ever want to read another book written in third-person present. It's just wrong. Second, grown-up, intelligent men should not run away without a word of explanation. It's very childish and prevents from taking them seriously. Otherwise, it's a good book and I do recommend it.
