There are times in all our lives when we feel uncertain of how to act for the best - what to do, what to wear, what to say and how to say it. This is a guide to modern manners as written by a quintessential English gentleman.
I gave this book to my boyfriend for Christmas, I think, around four years ago before we became an item. It was supposed to be a bit of a joke, and I didn't think he'd take it seriously, but now that we've moved in together and share our books I started leafing through it and decided to just read the whole thing.
This book is definitely something which, in a perfect world, every single person would read. It has guidelines on everything from setting a table and pronouncing certain words, to addressing the Queen and writing a resignation letter. I learned a whole bunch of etiquette rules from this book which will definitely come in handy some day.
Then again, of course I don't share some of Russell's views. He does however write this book with unending wit, satire and wisdom.
c2006: What an unexpected find this little book was. Really useful and funny to boot. Luckily, it seems that I am not terribly rude but am a bit gauche when I tell people that "I am saving the shekels" Don't even know where I got that expression from - but don't use it. Scattered though the book are little boxes headed up "Social Situation" - these had me grinning to myself. Definitely recommended.
