About the author

Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was the leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. M.R. James described Le Fanu as "absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories". Three of his best-known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard.

Weird and extremely boring.
I was listening to the audiobook and I must have had to rewind about a thousand times because I'd just space out due to the terrible quality of the storytelling.



The gist is that this dude drinks Green Tea while studying ancient religions.
Too much Green Tea later will open your third eye.
Apparently.
Because the next thing you know, he's on a bus and suddenly this demon monkey appears to him.
He sees it all the time and it drives him crazy. He appeals to a non-practicing doctor who believes in the spiritual side of things in the hopes that this guy can help him.



This was bad. Just from start to finish.

يا إلهي الرحيم، فلتكن في عوني وأبعد عني شرور ما أخفيته عن أعيننا.

نوفيلا «كاهن الجان» للكاتب الإيرلندي (جوزيف شيريدان) هي واحدة من أفضل قصص الرعب النفسي التي قرأتها في حياتي.. وعلى الرغم من صغر حجمها الذي لم يتجاوز 130 صفحة.. ولكن أحداث الرواية كانت مُثيرة وحابسة للأنفاس. ينقل لنا الراوي وهو أحد تلامذة الطبيب الألماني (مارتن هاسيلياس).. الخطابات والمحادثات بين (هاسيلياس) وأحد أصدقائه (فان لو) عن حالة الكاهن (جينينجز). تخيل معي أن هناك كاهن الذي من المُفترض أن يطرد من الناس مخاوفهم؛ لا يستطيع مواجهة مخاوفه.. فعندما كان الكاهن بصدد قراءة بعض الدراسات في الميتافيزيقا الدينية للحضارات القديمة، ظهر له من العدم قرد أسود بعيون حمراء شيطانية يُطارده في كل مكان.. ولا يراه أحد غيره.. وقد وصل الأمر إلى حد أن يوسوس إلى الكاهن بأبشع الجرائم والمُحرمات.

يقع الطبيب والكاهن في طريق بعضهما البعض عن طريق المعارف ولأن (هاسيلياس) رجل لا يخشى النظر أبعد من المادة، فقد وجد الكاهن غايته معه فحكى له حكايته المؤلمة.. ليعرف (هاسيلياس) السبب في كُل ذلك. وإلى كارهي الحميات الغذائية، ستحبون أن تعرفوا السبب جيداً وسيكون ذريعة جيدة لترك الحميات الغذائية. السبب في ذلك كان كثرة شُربه للشاي الأخضر! يبدو أن للشاي الأخضر فوائد كثيرة بعيداً عن الحميات الغذائية ومنها أنه يفتح عيناً ثالثة تستطيع أن ترى ما وراء المادة.. تُخلخل الحاجز بين الواقع وما ورائه.. فنظر الكاهن هُناك، وهُناك رآه القرد.. وقرر أن يعبث في حياته!

"من لم يختبر الجحيم سهل عليه السخرية منه.."

النوفيلا تُناقش العلاقة بين الدين والماورائيات وخصوصاً عند الإرتباط بهما.. فالكاهن رجل دين من مُهماته مُحاربة تلك الشرور المتمثلة في القرد.. ولكن برغم ذلك تجده ضعيف أمامه ولا يستطيع الصمود أمام وسوساته. ويبقى السؤال: هل سيستطيع (هاسيلياس) أن يُنقذ الكاهن (جينينجز)؟

نوفيلا (كاهن الجان) كانت كابوسية بأجواء قوطية يتميز بها الكاتب (جوزيف شيريدان) الذي لن يكون آخر لقاء بيننا وخصوصاً بعد النهاية الصادمة. وعن الترجمة، فقد كانت جيدة ومُلائمة. يُنصح بها وبشدة.

This so-called 'horror' story from the Victorian era is nothing more than a description of a psychiatric case.
By the way, I have always preferred green tea to black tea - haven't noticed any unusual effects including activating my inner eye:).

This is a rather complex novella on the personality of the vicar Mr Jennings told from the perspective of a Dr Hesselius in form of a diary. We hear about two evil spirits associated with every man, wonder about metaphysical medicine, learn about Paganism and the possible impact of green tea. What about the black monkey following Mr Jennings? Why is Dr Hartley regarded as a quack and how will the story end for Mr Jennings? Interesting slow burning story (you have to be in the mood for it) about psychological horror. Recommended.

لا يزال الرعب القوطى هو الوحيد القادر على اثارة اعصابى و يصيبنى بالقشعريرة عند قرائته
و اكثر ما يميز كاتبى الرعب من القرن التاسع عشر هو هذا النوع من الرعب القوطى الذى اشتهر به إدجار الان بو ولافكرافت .

رواية الشاى الاخضر او كاهن الجن رواية تنتمى للرعب الكلاسيكى عن كاهن اصبح يرى ابعد من المادة , اصبح يرى ما بين عالمنا و العالم الاخر عندما يتجسد امامه قرين او شيطان من العالم الاخر عل هيئة قرد يصبح يؤرقه فى كل الاوقات و يتغدى عل خوفه و يملائه بالوساوس و الافكار المخيفة و يجسدها امامه حتى يدفع الكاهن للجنون او فقدان الايمان .

يستعين الراهب جينينجر ب الدكتور هاسيلياس لمساعدته على علاجه من هذة الشرور و طرد هذا المخلوق , فى صفحات قليلة استطاع الكاتب نشر الخوف بداخلى و جعلنى اعيش احداثها بسبب دقة وصفه و سرده الممتاز .

نوفيلا قصيرة لكنها مرعبة و مخيفة مع نهاية غير تقليدية

الترجمة كانت جيدة لكن الغلاف كان سئ جدا و حتى الاسم المختار للترجمة كان سئ
كان يجب احترام العمل و نشر الاسم الاصلى " الشاى الاخضر " لان هذا لاسم له دلاله متعلقة بالقصة ليس اسم من فراغ

A clergyman drinks green tea, inadvertently opens his “third eye” and starts seeing a small monkey with glowing red eyes (the Devil, it’s implied). And that’s Green Tea by J. Sheridan Le Fanu! Absolute rubbish.

It’s written in a plodding, dreary Victorian style which you can’t help but notice given how little actual story there is. I couldn’t believe that all there was was some dull clergyman wigging out over hallucinations! I guess the subtext might be the author’s xenophobia/fascination about the East (green tea is drunk a lot in countries like Japan)? But what the hell, did Le Fanu think Japanese people wander about seeing Satan monkeys everywhere?!

Green Tea is garbage Victorian “horror” that's not even remotely interesting – don’t bother. Le Fanu’s lesbian vampire novella Carmilla is a much better read instead.

What was this man on. Coincidentally, this 1872 novella contains one of the first literary uses of the phrase "on something" to refer to doing drugs. Green Tea is a creepy short story about being haunted by a monkey. Definitely much to unpack about the tea trade and the racial/colonial implications of the novel's fascination with the exoticism of tea, both as Chinese - a product of the colonized that bites the colonizer back - and as British, a product of the colonizer corrupted by that status. Really interesting and I'll definitely return to this in the future.

ما هو هذا العالم الذي قد يكون محيطا بنا ولكن من رحمة الخالق أنه جعل على أعيننا غشاوة حتى لا نراه ؟!
هل من المحتمل أن تُزال تلك الغشاوة ونحن أحياء ؟! هل من الممكن رؤية البعد الخفي من دون الموت ؟!
قد تصيبك اللعنة وتنجلي الغشاوة فتفقد عقلك وتقع في هاوية الجنون أو تقنع نفسك أنها هبة ويجب عليك التعايش معها واستغلالها..

رواية ممتعة من الأدب القوطي في الصفحات الأولى ستعتقد أن الكاتب هو إدجار آلان بو ولكن شيريدان كتب لنا قصة قد تثير الرعب في نفسك شرط أن تقرأها وحدك في الليل..

بدأ كل شيء باكتشاف تلميذ لطبيب يدعى هاسيلياس خطاب بين معلمه وصديقه الغريب" فان لو " الذي كان يهتم بعلوم ما وراء الطبيعة فيكتشف التلميذ عالم معلمه هاسيلياس الغامض.
بحث القس جينينجز عن جميع الحلول لمشكلته العسيرة فحياته على المحك وقد علم أن بوسع هاسيلياس مساعدته قبل فوات الآوان أو علي الأقل تصديقه ولكنه عليه البوح بكل أسراره ويجب علي جلسة الاعتراف هذه أن تكون في المكان الذي بدأ فيه كل شيء بيت جينينجز الموحش المقبض



فهل يستطيع هاسيلياس استيعاب ما يحكيه القس جينيجز ومساعدته ؟!
وهل يستطيع العلم إيجاد مبررات لأشياء يتفادى الخوض فيها ؟!

يوجد خط رفيع بين العقل والجسد والروح وقد ينقطع هذا الخيط بفضل بعض المواد فيصبح الجسد ثقل جاسم علي صدر الروح الهائمة في عالم مرعب عصيّ علي الفهم ويفقد العقل توازنه فهو لا يعلم أين الحقيقة....

Monkey business.

The investigator of the occult and physician Martin Hesselius confides to a new patient, through a series of letters, the story of one Reverend Robert Jennings, who some time ago was ailed by physical and mental breakdown, and the tormentous vision of one mysterious and evil-looking monkey, that intermittently seemed to follow and accompany him wherever he went.

I don't think this was a bad idea, but somehow, frequently, Le Fanu seems to overstretch his stories to the point of near exhaustion. The concept of one interconnected dimension between the physical and spiritual world was an interesting one, until it got too convoluted and boring to keep hearing about it. I'm also not so fond of Green Tea anymore, and an extra 0.5 for the creepy monkey.

El investigador de lo oculto y médico Martin Hesselius le confía a un nuevo paciente, a través de una serie de cartas, la historia de un tal reverendo Robert Jennings, que hace algún tiempo padecía un colapso físico y mental, y la visión atormentadora de un mono misterioso y de aspecto malvado, que intermitentemente parecía seguirlo y acompañarlo a dondequiera que fuera.

No creo que fuera una mala idea, pero de alguna manera, con frecuencia, Le Fanu parece alargar sus historias hasta un punto de casi agotamiento. El concepto de una dimensión interconectada entre el mundo físico y espiritual fue interesante, hasta que se volvió demasiado enrevesado y aburrido para seguir escuchando de eso. Tampoco me agrada tanto el Té Verde ahora, y un 0,5 extra por ese mono aterrador.

تبدأ هذه الرواية عندما يطلع أحد تلامذة الطبيب "هاسيلياس" عن بعض الخطابات التي بينه وبين طبيب آخر، وهم يتحدثون عن حالة الكاهن الذي أصيب فجأة بمرض غريب, جعله يفقد تركيزه, وحبه بعمله المقدس, وحتى القيام بالأعمال اليومية.
هذا المرض لم يكن طبيعياً, ولم يكن سهل العلاج. لقد سيطر بالكامل على حالة الكاهن, لدرجة أنه انسحب من عمله ومن حياته بأكلمها, ولم يكن هنالك غير الطبيب "هاسيلياس" من صدق مرضه وحاول مساعدته بكل إخلاص.
ولكن هل سوف يتمكن من إنقاذه, أو سوف يبقى الكاهن معذباً بسبب هذا المرض الغريب.

(حسناً, أعتقد محاولتي لترك الكافيين والاعتماد على الشاي الأخضر هي خطة فاشلة حقاً, أعني ما هي أضرار الكافيين, أمام مخاطر الشاي الأخضر!)

كم كانت مؤلمة تلك المخاوف والهلاوس التي أصابت الكاهن, والمدة التي استغرقها في المعاناة بصمت ووحدة كان غير محتمل إطلاقا.
تلك الوحدة والانعزال التي شعر بها الكاهن, تلك الأفكار التي كانت تلاحقه بكل مكان وزمان, ولا تترك له مجالاً للتنفس. شيء لا يمكن احتماله أبدا.
وكم كان تعيساً ووحيداً عندما خُذِل من كل شخص وثق به, كيف تحولت حياته بشكل جذري, وبسبب ماذا.؟! بسبب الشاي الأخضر!!!

يا لها من رواية مخيفة, وتحبس الأنفاس. الرعب القوطي يفوز دائماً.
وأعتقد أنني منذ الآن سوف أبدأ بالبحث عن مؤلفات الكاتب "شيريدان لي فانو", هو حقاً يمتلك أفكاراً مذهلة وطريقة سرد رائعة.
لقد كانت حبكة وقصة فريدة من نوعها, على الرغم من كل البؤس والحزن الذي فيها, إلا أنها كانت سلسة ومشوقة للغاية.

If this was 1872 one can imagine how disturbing this would be, however in these days of television and other mass media its impact has been reduced to nothing. This situation seems to be happening more and more frequently when looking at the reviews, people want a constant in your face, (pun intended if you have read this!) everything revealed and no imagination spared.

When I was about ten years old I was allowed to watch the odd late night horror and going to bed no problem, but give me one of my mums books on ghost stories and I would be waking up frequently for weeks.

A solid scare for the "VICTORIAN" non tv generation.

في الحقيقة اني كنت متوقعة اكتر من الرواية ويمكن دا بسبب الريفيوز، روايه فعلا رعب وحلوه جدا الا ان كان جانب الرعب والإثارة في آخر 70 صفحة فقط كم من الأحداث مهولة ونهاية مؤلمه، اما عن أول 100 صفحة اصبني الملل في بعض الأحيان .

Un racconto breve che gioca, con l’uso di tre narratori diversi, con una trama semplice fatta di allusioni, accenni, elementi taciuti. Il tè verde, bevuto in eccesso, si trasforma in un veleno che acuisce i sensi e lo spirito con conseguenze a volta irreparabili.

Green tea? Check.
Demon monkey with red eyes, visible to only one person? Check.
Callous, conceited doctors? Check.

I can see how this novella might come across as mild by today's standards since most everyone is familiar with mental instability, depression, schizophrenia, hallucinations, and food sensitivities. But, since this was written about 150 years ago, the intended audience of that time might have been more shocked.

Still, I found it an interesting little tale with a semi-scholarly mien discussing green tea and its ability to make a clergyman believe he is being stalked by a red-eyed demon monkey... which is likely a reflection of his own inner demons a la Jekyll & Hyde.

And, man, doctors with their god-complexes! Few of the reviews I have seen here mention the doctor's utter callousness toward the suicide while still claiming his perfect treatment record of curing all 57 patients with a similar condition -- this particular suicide doesn't "count" or affect the doctor's record because the clergyman killed himself before officially becoming a patient. I guess Le Fanu held doctors in low regard. Definitely a burn. Actually, Le Fanu put a few burns in there.

الرواية جميلة.. وطريقة الحكي جميلة.. الحمدلله ما كنتش مخيفة اوي رغم اني كنت بقرأها بالليل وحاسس ان فيه قرد بعيون حمراء قاعد جنبي :D
لكن على الأقل كانت مخيفة بما فيه الكفاية أنها تعجبني :)
لي ملاحظة على اسم الرواية الذي تم استبداله في الترجمة وهو لا يعبر عن مضمون الرواية.. ربما الاسم الأصلي أيضًا غير معبر ولكنه أقرب وهو كذلك من حق الكاتب

'... he was low and nervous. In those words, of which healthy people think so lightly, what a world of suffering is sometimes hidden!'

What impressed me about this story is that, apart from being creepy, it's also profound and, apparently, has been very influential in literature.

I think the less you know about a ghost story before reading it, the better, so I'm trying not to give away too much. Something disturbing is happening to a nice clergyman, and a pre-Holmesian doctor with deductive skills is trying to help him, but time is pressing. There are also dark rooms full of books.

Recommended to connoisseurs of ghost stories ;)

Green Tea is, admittedly, a very odd name for a Victorian horror novel. Green tea is not something which sparks fear in the hearts of men, nor does it lend any implications of the supernatural. Le Fanu presents a macabre and unsettling tale, the events of which transpire solely due to the drinking of green tea.

Using a balance of the inexplicable and the scientific, Le Fanu tells the tale of a clergyman who is experiencing a constant demonic presence by his side. Although this premise, and the form the apparition takes, seem unlikely, we’re given various scientific explanations from our learned protagonist to support and analyse the poor religious man’s affliction.

The writing is typically Victorian, and you do need your wits about you in places, but it’s steady. The story is laid out in the form of letters from our protagonist to a fellow doctor. He explains the clergyman’s symptoms, and the story he has been given. I liked that we were never allowed to witness the supernatural happenings first-hand; they were spoken of to our protagonist, and then committed to letter, allowing Le Fanu to weave feelings of uncertainty and evoking considerations.

Although terribly short, I loved this little gothic exploration of green tea and demons. Le Fanu leaves the finale entirely open to interpretation, further supporting the Chinese whispers style of storytelling, and creating a final sense of uneasiness as you close the book. I’d definitely recommend this one for fans of Victorian horror.

ولا اتهزت لي شعرة D:
نهايتها ضايقتني، لأن في كل الأديان الاستعانة بالله، و بالصلاة عمرها ما تخلي كائنات العالم الآخر تسيطر على عقل حد، فتسيطر على رجل دين، غريبة جدًا !
