The townsfolk of Black Dog wrapped themselves in that sentiment like a security blanket. Being part of the tight-knit, small town shielded them from the horror that plagued the evening news.
And then something happened.
It happened fast. People got sick. People got violent. People died.
But the hunger lived on.
Day One: Luther's Diner
Winston Fleming woke determined to get the best booth at Luther's Diner. He was never an early-riser. By the time he made it to the diner, requests for the booth, with the best view of Black Dog Lake, was double-digit deep. Winston didn't have time to wait. But now, he has all the time in the world. Two weeks ago, sickness invaded Black Dog. Now, Winston is one of the last survivors. Today, he will get the booth with the best view, even if he has to kill to do so.
The Last Five Days is a five-part short story series that should be read in the following order: Day One: Luther's Diner Day Two: Evil Urges Day Three: The Smoker Day Four: Brothers Fight (Coming Soon) Day Five: Judas Kiss (Coming Soon)
Paul Seiple is a best-selling author of the Project Specter Mystery Series and the Great Dying Post-Apocalyptic Series. His roots are in the horror and thriller genres. Occasionally, he will take a wrong turn and end up in other genres like science fiction.
Outside of creating dark stories, Paul is influenced by Crystal Pepsi, New Coke, Van Halen III (The Gary Cherone Minute), and Windows Vista. He believes Paul Stanley’s ’78 solo record was the best and misses Saved by the Bell: The College Years tremendously. Paul would like for you to be in his Myspace Top 8, but sadly, he can’t remember his password. But all is not lost.
Winston Fleming is one of the last of the unaffected. Sitting in the local diner he reflects on the occurrences of the past two weeks. The virus first came to the small North Carolina town of Black Dog when two visiting fishermen fell ill after a day of fishing on the lake. The sickness proved deadly and highly contagious as it killed its way through the community. Victims of the virus didn’t stay “dead” though. Within 48 hours they rose again to stalk their former friends, family, and neighbors for food.
Winston has had to kill his own neighbor that very morning. The horrible rage that is one of the first symptoms of the virus had overtaken Harry and Winston had had to fight him off when Harry had tried to eat him. Winston’s wife, Marianna, is sick and Winston, hoping for a cure, has her locked in the spare bedroom in their home.
The military has surrounded the town locking it down to prevent anyone there from leaving, taking deadly measures, at times, to do so. Dr. Carrie Byrd and a team of doctors from the CDC had arrived on scene almost immediately to contain and control the disease. As Winston drinks his coffee at the diner, Dr. Byrd comes in. She, too, has contracted the virus. She asks Winston to kill her before she succumbs completely and resorts to cannabalism. She tells him to get word to the team that she’s discovered that the living dead are craving keratin – a component of human flesh. The virus that has invaded their bodies is trying to repair the damage of decay by ingesting keratin. This information may help them develop a solution to disease before it spreads outside of Black Dog.
This is the first day (part) of the five day (part) novel, The Last Five Days by Paul Seiple. The main character is a regular, nice guy – Winston Fleming – facing the worst day of his life. Supported by other believable, regular folks, the action begins right away and never lets up. I was immediately caught up in their story and want to know what’s going to happen. If you’re a fan of zombie/pandemic tales I would highly recommend you taking the time to check this one out!
I understand that the end of ur known world would be upsetting, but this is written very in a very stark style. To top everything off, it's not long enough. It should be a few days to keep my interest going. There has to be a little hope that the story will go somewhere.
