Ravenous

Rate this book
Just when Julian Schwarzenberg accepted that discarding his kinkster skin might be for the best, a call from the owner of one of London's BDSM clubs rekindles his need to have someone to call his own; to dominate and nurture to his heart’s content. Julian was hurt in the past, and he’s reluctant to accept a mystery invitation that could very well lead to a massive case of heartache. And to welcome Christopher into his life might just be Julian’s undoing.

Christopher’s life is like a permanent construction unstable and filled to the brim with flakes of emotional plaster. His eating disorder is consuming him from within, and his quest for Dominant Mr. Right--the one thing keeping him going--is a mirage akin to finding water on Mars. But fate finally delivers one effective punch--a smokingly hot Dom who is on the hunt for Submissive Mr. Right. Love may be waiting for Julian and Chris, but it will require them to take a leap of faith. They might just be willing, because they're both Ravenous .

Master of Science student by day, Alexandra spends her free time, not to say the boring parts of her lectures, reading and writing. She lives in London, but her heart still misses a beat here and there when she thinks about the time she lived in Paris and she constantly fights nostalgia of her native Italian Alps. When she’s not studying, writing or touring Europe in the hopes of finding a place to settle down, Alexandra can be found playing with her Saint Bernard baby, eating loads of pastries and chocolate and talking to her friends about future jobs and prospective boyfriends, or lack thereof. Oh right, she’s always struggling to focus on the here and now while her brain short-circuits from the insane amount of writing ideas crowding her synapses. Now, if only she had the time to develop them all!

This is me... On the fence.

description

Because this book was a mixed bag for me.

Julian is a successful lawyer who left the BDSM scene 6 months prior, wanting more from the lifestyle than what he could find at his local BDSM club. When he gets a call from his best friend, and club owner, he knows she wants something from him, he just couldn't have guessed it was to take on a new sub. Chris is damaged. He's emotionally vulnerable, recently kicked out of his brother's home, and suffering from anorexia. But there's something about the blue eyes and quiet strength of the young man that has Julian agreeing to take the boy in.

Let's just be honest: BDSM isn't even remotely a cure all. It might help a sub become more disciplined and focused, but it's not going to cure a physical or mental issue. It's not meant to. Julian and Chris both know this, and for the most part Julian doesn't try to fix Chris's eating disorder by being all Dommy. He orders Chris to eat regular meals, and while it may force Chris into eating some, generally, he balks and skips the meals when Julian isn't there to supervise. Instead, Chris sees a therapist and doctor to get treatment for his disorder, so YAY! for that.

But remember, I said this was a mixed bag.

description

The good:

The plot. Both the treating of the eating disorder, and the evolving relationship between Julian and Chris were fantastic. The growth of the relationship between the two was really enjoyable, and frankly, I would have been happy to have that be the sole focus of the book.

The demand from Julian for open and clear communication was absolutely refreshing.

Waiting for Chris to grow into his own person within the boundaries of their relationship before bringing sex into the mix, was a wise decision by Julian, despite what Chris thought.

And the adorable affection between Julian and Chris was as easy as it was smile inducing. I loved seeing these two men grow and open themselves up to each other.

The bad:

The knowing looks from doctor when Chris was brought in for treatment, like KINK was tattooed across their foreheads, was irritating, at best. But when it comes to the knowing look department, Julian and Chris have it down to a science. These two men can read an entire kaleidoscope of emotions just by looking into each other's eyes. The most I get when I look into someone's eyes? Eye color. Maybe some indications that they need more sleep. But lust, excitement, a tinge of anxiety, and a boatload of need, in one look?

description

It's not as sexy as you'd imagine.

Chris often relies on being bratty to get his Dom's attention. What was cute at first, soon wears out its welcome, and it was a trope I wish the book hadn't resort to.

There was unnecessary conflict with Chris's brother near the end, where the real focus should have been Chris's eating disorder. I wanted to see growth and healing from Chris with his doctors and his Dom. Instead, we're told about any progress that happens in passing, like an afterthought. It's my biggest sad when it comes to this story, because it looked like it was heading for a serious Miracle Grow kind of moment, but then we get a maniacal villain who steals the spotlight, instead of the healing of a character.

And last, but not least, a very uncomfortable scene that takes place at Mistress Jessamy's house. Listen, I know BDSM tends to be portrayed as a public thing, but having an intimate scene in front of another couple, outside of a club, while they have a scene... It all just seems so skeevy.
But that's on me.

The ugly:

I have a whole new repertoire of dirty talk at my disposal. Are you ready to be seduced?

description

*ahem*

...Julian alternating between the two rosy love buttons. (hahaha, he means nipples)

...Julian deprived him of his touch, snapping a leather cock ring on his tumescent - and precum-leaking- organ.

Julian kept on with his task, coating Chris's body with the oil until his skin was thoroughly impregnated. (..er...)

...stimulating that hard bundle that was Chris's prostate. And for every jolt of pleasure coming from his overexcited love gland... (stop laughing! I'm trying to seduce you!)

His prostate singing joyous hymns when those deft fingertips made contact with his gland.

description

Another digit penetrated Chris's steaming hole... (WTF?! Chris, you need to see a doctor about that.)

...the love tool retreating until it almost slipped out... (no lie, I LOL'd hard at that one)

Before he could step away from their love nest... (I'm so using that as the word for "bed" from now on.)

It keeps going, but I think you get the idea. It's flowery with a side of cheese.

And I know it's protocol to call the sub "boy", but after a whopping 824 times of reading that word, IDGAF, I never want to read that word again. (If you were wondering, "Master" makes an appearance 442 times.)

Dirty talk aside, I found that there was quite a bit of repetitive internal monologuing that could have been edited out. It came across more telling than showing, and it made the story drag in places.

I don't think this was the "right book at the right time" for me. Or maybe, it never was going to be the book for me. While the plot is a fantastic one, the style just hit me all wrong. But that's me, and everyone reads books differently. I can see other people loving this, especially people new to the BDSM genre, who need the extra bit of explanation and conflict in their story.

Recommended for those who like kink, some hurt comfort, and a little sexual healing.

Now take all that newfound dirtytalk I just taught you, and go have some fun!

Ravenous is a BDSM romance by first-time author Alexandra Blunt. While this was better than most books I've read by first-time authors, it didn't "wow" me.

Julian is a Dom and successful lawyer who left the BDSM world 6 months ago after feeling like something was missing in his life. He was ready for a sub to love, not just dominate.

Christopher is a sub and college student who was recently kicked out of his home by his homophobic, drug addicted brother. He is lost and alone and suffers from anorexia. (It should be noted to those that are irritated when BDSM books treat the practice of BDSM as psychotherapy for a damaged person's psyche that Chris does get professional help for his eating disorder. His Dom didn't try to "fix" him by dominating him.)

Right off the bat, Julian is convinced to take Christopher in as a tenant after meeting his for the first time. A bit unrealistic, but just go with it. I did like that the book didn't dawdle, instead getting right to the meat and potatoes of the story.

Eventually Julian and Christopher agree to try a 4 month BDSM contract. A slow burn to BDSM/sex and romance begins.

I enjoyed the first 60% of the book quite a lot, but after about the 65% point, the book fell into the stereotypical Dom/sub relationship that irritates me. Christopher is a "brat" and needs to be punished, public scenes at a club, other Doms laughing at their bratty subs that need to be put in their place, subs that meet with other subs to talk about their Doms in a love-sick puppy way. Julian treated Christopher like a child, not a sub. There is a big difference in my eyes, and that just is NOT my kink. Also, the descriptions for the penis got a little too much for me, "love tool" and "ripe" for example.

nope

This is a classic case of "It's not the book, it's me." I am super, super picky about my BDSM but I am quite certain many people will like this. This was more of a KC Wells/Sean Michael BDSM as opposed Jane Davitt/Lynn Kelling BDSM. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, just my personal preference.

A lot of people will like this one, especially fans of KC Wells's Collars and Cuffs series and Sean Michael's Hammer series. Those that need D/s on a more equal level like AJ Rose's Power Exchange series or Lynn Kelling's The Manse series should skip Ravenous.

"Time would tell if he’d just been dreaming, a sub starved for a Master’s dominance, or if he’d find a ribbon to cut at the end of his journey."

I believe I've said this before but there's something I really enjoy about BDSM stories, regardless that I have no interest in experiencing the lifestyle firsthand. So when an opportunity arose to read a new-to-me author in Alexandra Blunt, and the description for 'Ravenous' seemed interesting, I decided to jump right in.

Julian has been involved in the world of BDSM for many years now, but recently he took a break thinking he was going to stop that lifestyle because he hadn't found what he wanted. What Julian wants is a 24/7 submissive to care for, to nurture, and perhaps to love. Then his best friend Jess, who owns the club he's a member of, calls him in and asks him to consider taking on Christopher as a sub. Chris is a mess, to put it lightly. He knows in his mind that submission is for him, but he's not ever had a steady Master to help him deal with all of his feelings and thoughts that cause him to act out and that play a big part in his anorexia. He desperately wants what Julian is offering, but he has no idea how to get it. A Dom and a sub who have a lot to learn about each other, about themselves, and a whole lot of work ahead of them.

There were no reviews, and this is a new author, so I was hesitant to try this out, but I got the sample and then I didn't want to stop reading. I thought that this was a solid, well written debut novel! I enjoyed the characters, Chris especially...I wanted to give Chis a hug a few times through this. Also, I thought the kink was very well written, hot, and believable (although keep in mind this is coming from a reader who knows jack about BDSM in real life, just from what I've read), and I enjoyed the romance and the ending.

I think what kept this from being a five star read for me, is that several times, I remember thinking, "I wish we had gotten to read about that, instead of being given a summary of it happening" with things that Chris and/or Julian went through. Going along with that, I also wish that

For me, it all comes down to the romance though, and I did really love Chris and Julian together, how they went from just a contract with kink, to love and Julian being Chris' Master instead of Sir. And that epilogue, yummmm! Overall, I definitely enjoyed reading this and I look forward to what this author writes next!

~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads Review Team~
I love books about BDSM and especially if they have “brats” in them, they are so much fun. This book just didn’t hit any of my buttons. I couldn’t feel any connection between Julian and Christopher for most of the book. The story was too wordy and not enough action for me, I found myself skimming several times and just wishing for the book to end which isn’t like me. I feel like Christopher’s eating disorder should have been dealt with more than just saying he was going to counseling too.
Characters: couldn’t really connect with them
Sex: yes
Religious: no
Would I recommend to others: yes
More than one book in the series: not sure
Genre: M/M BDSM Romance
Would I read more by this author: yes

the first third of the story seemed rather promising but unfortunately it didn't last . the rest was simply boring and I really did not like the way the subject of anorexia was treated as if such a disease could be solved just because the dom decided it. nope, not my things

Excerpt from Alexandra Blunt’s blog post—March 21, 2016:

For love we suffer; that was my very first rational thought about love. One that inspired these lines:

You grieve over the loss of a long lost lover,
You lie restless in the grave of passion.
Eros in the sweet bitterness of winter,
The caress of desire into an abyss of sorrow.

This idea of an unbreakable tie between love and pain stayed with me for many long years.

It stayed with me until I let go of the fear and understood that love doesn’t just break us; sometimes it’s the one thing keeping us sane, our very unique lifeline.

And my novel was born out of that very discovery; that’s why Ravenous is all about opening up to love. And through love, to life.

Julian Schwarzenberg has given up the lifestyle, quit his membership to the local club and suppressed his dominant tendencies for months. He feels old, a throwback to when the D/s lifestyle was serious and a commitment—worth something to those involved—not just the latest fad. He receives a call from an old friend, the owner of his old club, who asks him for a favor. She has a sub, a man who desperately needs help.

Christopher has been made homeless by his older brother. He is alone, and coping with his eating disorder is no joke. He longs to serve but cannot find a Dom who will take him on with all his emotional issues.

This match is not necessarily made in heaven, and the two men struggle to reach their HEA as they both have issues to solve. Chris is a man rigidly in control of himself and his surroundings; it’s the way he deals with his anorexia. Getting Chris to surrender his control of his disease is a major hurdle he must overcome. Julian assumes control of every aspect of Chris’s life in an attempt to ease the boy’s burden, all the while giving Chris the freedom to laugh and play, be affectionate without the risk of angering his Master.

I will say that the issue of anorexia could have been handled in a more proactive way in this book. I realize the Master/sub dynamic has to come into play, but I feel that Chris should have had professional help long before he actually did. The issue of anorexia is not one a Dom alone can handle. The pathway for these men to finding their HEA is a believable one, though, and it didn’t feel contrived. They have to open up to each other equally, and that isn’t easy for either man.

Alexandra Blunt created solid main characters and supported them with secondary characters that added to the storyline and kept it rolling. If parts of this novel were redundant to other mainstream works, I can forgive the author because other parts were fresh, and that can be hard with all the BDSM books on the market. I am not going to belabor story arcs or other literary points because this is her first novel. Is this a great novel? No, but it is a really good debut. Ravenous is a solid work of fiction and this author shows so much promise. You can see how she will mature in the future and hone her craft. In a genre that is growing and changing with such leaps and bounds, it is encouraging to see a fledging author with such promise; she is and will be a solid addition to the M/M universe.

I would recommend this story and look forward to other books from this author in the future.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

I have to admit that I wasn’t too impressed when I read the blurb for this one, but at the same time, something about it caught my interest. I decided to take a chance, and I’m glad I did. This debut novel has a lot of promise, and Alexandra Blunt is definitely an author to watch.

Where the story excelled in the characterization. Both Julian and Christopher are fairly well drawn. Julian, right off the bat, commands the page. He’s a strong character, and his Dominant personality just rolls off him. But he’s also got a great heart, generous soul, and a great capacity to love. These traits are not always easy to balance. Too often the Dom is either too far on the dominant scale, or too soft on the indulgent side. That’s not the case here. Blunt managed to create a character that never went too far in either direction, and he was utterly believable. He had command of every situation, but it was always tempered with that softer edge. Which made it perfectly believable that he would not only take in a stranger, but that he was the perfect Dom for Chris. That’s not to say he was without flaw though, and that too was done well. Julian made mistakes and missteps, but he also realized it quickly and took action to correct them.
