Now in command of a figate, William Calvert is selected to carry out a vital secret assignment. He must try and prevent the Spanish shipping gold and valuables from South America to Europe, where they would be destined for Napoleon
As a new and avid reader (particularly novels and historical of this period) I found it hard to set this book aside unfinished. The one criticism I would make relates to the formatting of the book. As I read exclusively on an iPad, picking up where I last read was at times difficult given that this is the first book I have read that lacked “numbered chapters”. I found myself keeping a written record of page location so I could be sure to return to my last read location. Hopefully the author will correct this problem in his future writings. On to the next book of the series.....
Repatriated from a French prison, married, court-martialed, exonerated, and promoted to Post Captain, Calvert is sent to a new ship, a frigate, which is on the brink of mutiny. Revitalizing the crew and refitting the ship to meet his standards; he is sent on a new secret mission which takes him to the West Indies to intercept Spanish treasure ships. A good second book in this entertaining Naval Warfare Series.
I felt the Leighton found is narrative voice more easily in this volume. It rattles along at pace with the balance between action and home life neatly achieved.
Yes I enjoyed the first two books. A bit technical but the stories hang together, Looks like the next two volumes are not available from kindle or Amazon. Shame,I would had liked to finish the series
The continuing story of Captain Calvert Is very well-written and has some exciting action scenes. The characters are realistic and the dialogue is good. Only a few typos mar the quality of this novel.
