The Eighth novel in the award-winning "Tropical Frontier" series, The Good Dog is the prequel to The Cow Hunters. This is the story of one dog's journey to discover a place called home.
Tim Robinson is a third generation Floridian, his grandfather having taken up a 100 acre homestead on Cape Canaveral in 1924. It was his grandfather and father who instilled in him a love for everything Florida. Tim grew up in West Palm Beach, halfway between saltwater Lake Worth and freshwater Lake Mangonia, where he spent his childhood and youth traipsing through the woods or biking over to the beach or taking in the wonders of Florida in some fashion or another. He lives with his wife, Connie, on a small farm in Indiantown, Florida.
I was sent this book free of charge in return for an honest review. This is a very short novella (64 pages) that feels more like one chapter or a book written for older elementary kids. Set in 1847 Florida, the plot and characters are taken in part from history of actual settlers. This is obviously a book for dog lovers and it's impossible not to fall in love with the main dog character. The writing of the dialect that many of the characters speak would sound great on audio, but in print makes reading awkward. I'd recommend this for a very quick read or for older elementary kids on up to adults.
It's interesting to read an account of early life in Florida through the eyes of a dog. The adventure Mudge has along the way to his last family are heart breaking at times but true to form, the dog remembers the bad but lives in the present good times. You come away from Mr Robinson's book with a strong sense of what it was like to live in wild Florida, BD, before Disney. Always a good history lesson to be learned in his books.
This is a good series that gives you a good idea of what frontier Florida was like. I have been reading there series out of order, but each story mostly stands on it's own. There are some references to previous people or events but once you pick up and read that book, it all makes sense. These are very easy to read and hard to put down once you start.
This is a quick read. It tells the tale of Mudge the dog. We learn about him in a early book. This like a prequel of how Mudge was where he was when Billy & Bo found him. Its a good story written from the dogs side of things.
Wonderfully written story of a dogs life in the wilderness. A story about adventure, love and kindness. It brings the dog lover out in everyone. Rock on
As good as the rest of the series. Mudge, the dog, has been one of my favorite parts to the book series. It is very easy to see that his family loved him and that he was a great working dog but also very loyal and would do anything to keep his family safe.
To hear the story from Mudge's point of view was amazing. I got to learn more of the backstory of Mudge's life.
If you love dogs, read this book about a puppy who encounters a hard life but eventally finds the best home ever. The description of the Florida swamp life in the 1800's is excellent.
