About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

This charming and naive story is exactly the book I would have greatly enjoyed in my childhood. I would not have noticed some drawbacks, e.g. the shallowness of the characters or the uneveness of pacing (as if A.C. Doyle was in a great hurry to finish the story).
Still, the author's imagination shines through when he writes about the lost technologically advanced civilazation living in the depth of the Atlantic and all the incredible flora and fauna surrounding them.
I missed this book many years ago and today reading it was a pleasant encounter with childhood.

This is one of Doyle's late works, published in 1929, the year before his death. It's a science-fiction story of undersea exploration uneasily (I believe the proper technical Latin term is "whackadoodle") mixed with some spiritualism in the ancient sunken city of Atlantis. It's fun to compare it to Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or some of the lost civilization books of the time by Haggard or perhaps Hyne. Maracot is not on a par with his other sf hero, Prof. Challenger, but some of the deep sea descriptions are nicely done. It's a fun artifact of the time, notable because of the author.

বেশ ভাল লাগল পড়ে। ছোট গল্পগুলো বেশি ভাল লেগেছে।ছোট গল্পগুলোর জন্য ৫★ আর উপন্যাস অর্থাৎ ম্যারাকট ডিপ এর জন্য ৪★। যদিও উপন্যাসটা আমার বেশ ভাল লেগেছে। স্যার আর্থার কোনালের লেখায় মনে হয়েছে জুল ভার্নের লেখা কোন উপন্যাস পড়ছি। সাগরতলের রাজ্যের অ্যাডভেঞ্চার পড়ে মনে হয়েছে আমিও চরিত্রগুলোর সাথে আছি।
অনুবাদ খুবই দারুণ। সম্ভবত প্রথম শার্লক হোমস এর বাইরে স্যার আর্থার কোনাল ডয়েলের লেখা পড়লাম এবং এক্সপেকটেশন পূরণ হয়েছে।❤️

অনুবাদ রীতিমতো দুর্ধর্ষ। সেরা গল্প "নতুন সমাধি"। " লেডি স্যানক্সের উপাখ্যান"ও বেশ ভালো। সবচেয়ে হতাশ হয়েছি উপন্যাসিকা "দ্য ম্যারাকট ডিপ" পড়ে, মাঝামাঝি পর্যন্ত কাহিনি দারুণ ছিল, এরপরেই ম্যাসাকার হয়ে গেল, হুটহাট করে শেষ হয়ে যাচ্ছে যাচ্ছে করে হাস্যকর উদ্ভট সব কাহিনি শুরু হল। চমৎকার একটা কাহিনির খুবই বাজে পরিসমাপ্তি।

Readers who know of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle through his Sherlock Holmes stories, his tales of Sir Nigel in the 14th century, the Napoleonic adventures of Brigadier Gerard or the sci-fi escapades of Professor Challenger may still be unfamiliar with "The Maracot Deep." Published in 1929, only a year before the author's death, this short novel amply demonstrates that Doyle still retained all his great abilities as a spinner of riveting yarns, even in his twilight years. At a mere 140 pages, the novel(la) is a compact but densely written fantasy of the discovery of the remnants of Atlantis. It seems that Professor Maracot (a kind of early 20th century cross between Jacques Cousteau and Robert Ballard), along with an American naturalist and an American engineer, had suffered a terrible accident while in his bathysphere off the Canary Islands. A giant crayfish had separated the hawser connecting them to their mother ship, and down they went, 26,000 feet, into the abyss of the eponymous Maracot Deep. Miraculously, disaster is averted as Maracot & Co. are rescued by the survivors of the lost Atlantean civilization, which society has been living under the ocean floor for the last 8,000 years. Our heroes are given a tour of the Atlantean realm and witness many monstrous varieties of undersea life, including a giant electric sea-worm, poisonous purple slugs, and the sea serpent of legend. They witness some of the Atlantean relics of superscience, explore the ruins of the capital city, and have a run-in with the "Lord of the Dark Face."

This is a wonderful fantasy, and keeps the reader thoroughly entertained throughout. It is largely epistolary in nature, taking the form of various letters/"messages in a bottle" that our heroes manage to get back to the world. Doyle solves the problem of there being no light at the ocean bottom by having Maracot & Co. discover that the ocean floor's globigerina ooze is phosphorescent, due to the decomposing marine life. As for the unbearable pressure, our boys discover some mysterious compensating factor that nullifies that problem. So they are able to walk around with their vitrine helmets and oxygen tanks and explore the ocean depths very comfortably, thank you. Doyle, an ardent spiritualist in his twilight years, had his Professor Challenger character (his favorite) convert from being a hardened materialist to a believer in the unseen forces that surround us, in his 1926 novel "The Land of Mist." And in his last novel, he does likewise for Professor Maracot, whose "theories of a lifetime have crumbled about [his] ears" after his battle with the mystical Lord of the Dark Face. This really is a remarkable story. If only Doyle hadn't made one tremendous booboo. At one point in the tale, Headley, our narrator, falls in love with an Atlantean named Mona, the daughter of Scarpa, a community leader. Fifty pages later, she is the daughter of Manda, the chief of Atlantis! This is a terrible oversight on Doyle's part, and on the part of his editors, and undermines what up until then had been a meticulously put-together tale. This major slip aside, "The Maracot Deep" is guaranteed to give all sci-fi/fantasy fans a few nights of great pleasure indeed. It would make for excellent reading after one finishes C.J. Cutcliffe Hyne's classic novel of ancient Atlantis, "The Lost Continent" (1900), which details Atlantis as it was back when. Doyle tells us what's going on there now.

Par godu Fantastikas mēnesim Grāmatu klubā - mana pirmā tikai viedierīcēs lasītā grāmata. Tāds formāts ir foršs lasīšanai pa ceļam, taču gultā man patīk likties tomēr ar grāmatu.
Klasiski piedzīvojumu stāsti, kuros svarīgākais ir vide un notikumi, bet tēli ir tā vien fonā, lai to varētu parādīt. Tēli ir tik tipiski, ka nav nozīmes, ka 2 stāstos profesors ir Čelindžers, bet vienā - Marakots, jo būtībā liekas, ka tas ir viens un tas pats. Arī rakstošais galvenais varonis varētu būt viens Taču notikumi nudien ir interesanti, paviesoties ciemos pie dinozauriem vai grimušās Atlantīdas iedzīvotājiem noteikti ir kas lasīšanas pieredzes vērts.

নতুন সমাধিঃ কেনেডি এবং বার্জার – বিপরীত চরিত্রের অথচ বন্ধুপ্রতীম দুই তরুন পুরাতত্ববিদ। কাজের ক্ষেত্রে পরস্পরের প্রবল প্রতিত্বন্দীও তাঁরা। অন্তর্মুখী স্বভাবের বার্জার একদিন আবিষ্কার করে বসল মহামুল্যবান প্রাচীন এক সমাধি। সেটা দেখার জন্য গোঁ ধরল কেনেডি, অনুরোধ করল বন্ধুকে সমাধির ঠিকানা বাতলে দিতে। রাজি হলো অন্তর্মুখী স্বভাবের বার্জার, কিন্তু বিনিময়ে দিল এক অদ্ভুত এক শর্ত, - কেনেডির জীবনের খুব ব্যক্তিগত একটা গল্প সবিস্তারে খুলে বলতে হবে তাঁকে! কেনেডি কি বলবে সেই গল্প? আর সেই গল্প বললেই কি এই গল্প শেষ?

লেডি স্যানক্সের উপাখ্যানঃ দুশ্চরিত্রা স্ত্রী লেডি স্যানক্সকে কে নিয়ে ছি ছি করছে গোটা শহর, কিন্তু লর্ড স্যানক্স নির্বিকার! নিজের মনে বাগান পরিচর্যায় ব্যস্ত তিনি। কিন্তু আসলেই কি তাই? নাকি মনে মনে কোন ফন্দি আঁটছেন তিনি?

লস অ্যামিগোসের লংকাকান্ডঃ বহু বছরের পুরানো দাগী আসামী ডানকান ওয়ার্নার, কখনও ধরা পরেনি। কিন্তু ধরা পড়ল এমন এক সময়ে, যখন বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদনের জন্য বিখ্যাত লস অ্যামিগোস শহর অপেক্ষা করছিল নতুন এক পদ্ধতিতে মৃত্যু দন্ড কার্যকর করতে। যেখানে কয়েকশো ভোল্টের বিদ্যুৎএর শক খেলেই মানুষের ভবলীলা সাঙ্গ হয়ে যায়, সেখানে তাঁরা ঠিক করল ডানকানের শরীরে বারো হাজার ভোল্টের বিদ্যুৎ প্রবাহ চালনা করবে। আফটার অল, বিদ্যুতের শহর বলে কথা। এর চেয়ে কম হলে তো শহরের ইজ্জত থাকে না! পরিকল্পনা বাস্তবায়ন করা হলো যথারীতি, কিন্তু কি ঘটলো তারপর?

পতঙ্গ শিকারীঃ ‘একদিন বা তার বেশি সময়ের জন্য ডাক্তারি বিদ্যায় পারদর্শীএকজন লোক প্রয়োজন। প্রার্থীকে শারীরিক ভাবে শক্তিশালী এবং কীটপতঙ্গ বিদ্যায় আগ্রহী হতে হবে’ - অদ্ভুত এক বিজ্ঞাপন ছাপা হল পত্রিকায়। মনের মধ্যে কিন্তু কিন্তু করলেও টাকার কথা চিন্তা করে আবেদন ঠুকে দিলেন তরুন ডাক্তার হ্যামিলটন। কি অভিজ্ঞতা অপেক্ষা করছে তার সামনে?

ম্যারাকট ডিপঃ আটলাণ্টিক মহাসাগরের গহীন তলদেশে, যেখানে কোনও মানুষের পা পড়েনি, সেখানেই যাবার পরিকল্পনা করেছেন পাগলাটে বিজ্ঞানী ড. ম্যারাকট। কাঁচ আর ইস্পাত দিয়ে তৈরি এক অদ্ভুতদর্শন খাঁচায় চেপে, দু’জন সঙ্গীকে নিয়ে সত্যি সত্যি নামলেন সাগরে। এরপরেই ঘটে গেল দুর্ঘটনা। অচেনা এক দানবের হামলায় ছিঁড়ে গেল দড়ি, অতল এক খাদের ভেতর পড়ে গেল খাঁচাটা। কিন্তু মরলেন না তাঁরা। কারণ, নিচে রয়েছে অদ্ভুত এক পাতালরাজ্য। জলচর মানুষ আছে ওখানে, আছে রূপসী রাজকন্যা, ...আর ভয়ঙ্কর এক অশুভ শক্তি। রাজ্যটার নাম? আটলাণ্টিস!
চারটা ছোট গল্প এবং একটা উপন্যাস (ম্যারাকট ডিপ) নিয়ে সংকলন।

জীবনের শেষ দিকে এসে স্যার আর্থার কোনান ডয়েল আধ্যাত্মবাদের দিকে ঝুঁকে পড়েছিলেন, যার প্রভাব পরেছিল তার লেখাতেও। যে কারণে দ্য লস্ট ওয়ার্ল্ডের কঠিন যুক্তিবাদী প্রফেসর চ্যালেঞ্জারকে সিরিজের শেষ বই ল্যান্ড অব দ্যা মিস্টে এসে দেখা যায় আধ্যাত্মিকতার স্মরণ নিতে। প্রফেসর চ্যালেঞ্জারের চারিত্রিক বিবর্তনের এই জার্নিটাকে সামারাইজ করলে যে চরিত্রটা দাঁড়ায়, সেটাকেই আমার কাছে ডক্টর ম্যারাকট বলে মনে হয়েছে । সেই হিসেবে ডক্টর ম্যারাকটকে বলা যেতে পারে ‘সীমিত আকারে প্রফেসর চ্যালেঞ্জার’। প্রফেসর চ্যালেঞ্জারের ‘হারানো পৃথিবী’ অভিযানের মত অমৃত না হলেও ডক্টর ম্যারাকটের ‘হারানো আটলান্টিস’ অভিযান একেবারে মন্দ লাগেনি।
ব্যক্তিগত ভাবে অবশ্য বইয়ের বাকি গল্প গুলোই বেশি ভাল লেগেছে।

গল্পে যদি কোনো কমতি থেকে থাকে তো সেটা অনেকটাই পুরণ হয়ে গেছে ঝরঝরে সাবলীল অনুবাদের গুনে।
সমুদ্র অভিযান, হারানো সভ্যতা, প্রাচীন অপদেবতা, রিভেঞ্জ থ্রিলার – এইসব বিষয়ে ক্লাসিক ফ্যান্টাসি-মিস্ট্রি-অ্যাডভেঞ্চার টাইপ গল্প যাঁদের ভাল লাগে তাঁরা চেখে দেখতে পারেন।

Izskaitīju “Piedzīvojumi. Fantastika. Ceļojumi.” sērijā atlikušās nelasītās grāmatas un apstulbu, šķiet, ka visu laiku pārlecu uz alternatīvo visumu, kur atlikušo grāmatu skaits ir ap piecdesmit. Lai situāciju labotu, nolēmu izlasīt savu bērnības vienu no mīļākajām grāmatām. Par to liecina tas vien, ka uz vāka nav iespējams vairs saskatīt bildi, un grāmata ir pamatīgi nobružāta. Un pie reizes nošāvu divus zaķus, jo šī grāmata ir arī “Fantastikas pasaulē” sērijā.

Marakota bezdibenī ietilpst veseli trīs stāsti: Zudusī pasaule, Indīgā josla un Marakota bezdibenis. Pirmie divi stāsti ir no profesora Čelindžera sērijas. Pavisam tajā esot izdoti veseli pieci stāsti, taču pārējie esot tādi mēsli, ka viņus neviens nav atvēzējies publicēt pat PSRS beigu gados. Savas daiļrades pēdējos gados Arturs Konans Doils esot ieslīdzis spirituālisma maldos, stāsti atrāvušies no mūsu realitātes tik tālu, ka mūsdienās būtu liekami pie tīrajām pelavām. Marakota bezdibenis gan ir stāsts pats par sevi, un man par brīnumu, nemaz nepiederēja pie Čelindžera cikla.

Zudusī pasaule – sarakstīta laikos, kad uz pasaules bija pāris visnotaļ lieli Balti plankumi, kuros varēja slēpties jebkas. Šajā laikā Evolūcijas teorija bija pārņēmusi cilvēku prātus, un aktuāls bija jautājums, vai senākas dzīvības formas spēja saglabāties līdz mūsdienām. Autors par pamatu ņem ideju, ka pietiekoši laba izolācija un apstākļu nemainība spēs iesaldēt laikā aizvēsturisko radību populāciju. Profesoram Čelindžeram šādu vietu izdodas atklāt. Atklāšana notiek piedzīvojumu stāstu labākajās tradīcijās, miris baltais indiāņu ciemā, noslēpumaina dienasgrāmata un plakankalne, kurai nevar tikt klāt. Atgriezies mājās viņš saprot, ka neviens viņa goda vārdam netic. Profesora mežonīgā daba arī lietai par labu nenāk. Beigu beigās tiek nolemts rīkot atkārtotu ekspedīciju. Tajā dodas žurnālists Melouns, profesors Samerlijs un lords Rokstons.

Lieki piebilst, ka stāsts ir vienkāršs piedzīvojumu stāsts no sērijas: gāju, redzēju, nošāvu. Baltais cilvēks ir pārāks par visiem mežoņiem. Viņam ir šaujamais un vēss prāts. Pašu personāžu iekšējā pasaule ir tik pat bagāta kā atklātnītei. Viņiem ir savs vērtību komplekts, kas nodrošina komandas darbu. Čelinžers ir fiziski brutāls un mīl kašķēties, Somerlijs ir īgņa un kašķu pūznis, Lords Rokstons labi šauj un ir aukstasinīgs, žurnālists stāsta mums visu un reizēm ir avantūristisks. Tā nu viņi visi dodas pretī visiem piedzīvojumiem un tiek ar visu galā, jo baltais cilvēks citādi nevar.

Visam stāstam cauri vējo neliels rasisms, kur evolūcijas virsotne ir cilvēks, un precīzāk, baltā rase. Nēģeri, indiāņi un jaukteņi arī ir cilvēki, taču viņiem piemīt zināma aprobežotība. Indiāņi ir māņticīgi gļēvuļi, jaukteņi atriebes pilni psihopāti, bet nēģeri – kalpi, kas bez saimnieka nekā nevar izdarīt. Stāsts bērnībā spēja pavilkt tieši ar piedzīvojumu komponenti. Tagad, kad esmu paaudzies, varu tikai slīgt nostalģijā par laikiem, kad šī grāmata man šķita aizraujošākā pasaulē. Bija man gadi desmit. Patlaban piesaistīja dzīvo izrakteņu diskusijas atblāzma un Doila rasisms. Lieku 7 no 10 ballēm. Interesanta joprojām.

Marakota bezdibenis 1 Indīgā josla – šis ir stāsts no profesora Čelindžera sērijas. Profesors atklāj, ka visai pasaulei draud bojāeja, jo izmainās apkārtējā ētera sastāvs, un piedāvā saviem draugiem novērot pasaules bojāeju kā skatītājiem. Gadsimta sākumā 1910. gada 19. maijā Zemes orbīta šķērsoja komētas asti. Daudzi cilvēki uzskatīja, ka pienācis pasaules gals, jo komētas aste sastāvot no indīgām gāzēm. Tas bija ražens laiks viltus praviešiem un naudas izkrāpējiem. Domāju, ka autors iespaidojies no šī fakta un pēc trīs gadiem sarakstījis nedaudz modificētu versiju. Izņemot faktu, ka uz Zemes dzīvi paliek tikai Čelindžers un viņa draugi un pāris iespaidīgiem katastrofu aprakstiem, nekā ievērības cienīga šeit nav.

Autors atkal pacenšas pierādīt savas augstākās rases idejas. Ieejot ēterā pirmās bojā iet vājāk attīstītās rases – afrikāņi, indiāņi, malajieši. Eiropā pirmie krīt spāņi un slāvi. Briti un teitoņi noturas visilgāk, jo viņiem ir gribasspēks un spēja kontrolēt savas dzīvnieciskās dziņas. Apokalipses patika jau bērnībā, un tādēļ lieku šim vājajam stāstam 6 no 10 ballēm.

Marakota bezdibenis – šis stāsts man pusaudža gados patika ļoti, jo tajā bija runa par Atlantīdu. Bērnu dienās Atlantīda man bija pierādīts fakts, kuru tikai “dumjie” zinātnieki nav spējuši atklāt. Liels paldies par to jāsaka Žilam Vernam, Arturam Konanam Doilam un, protams, Aleksandram Šaļimovam. Šis stāsts bija būtisks man kā jaunajam atlantologam. Literārajā ziņā te nekā īpaša nav parasta dēka, kas atklāj interesantus noslēpumus, veselu nogrimušu civilizāciju. No zinātniskā viedokļa autors absolūti nav pacēlis savu dibenu, lai aizietu uz bibliotēku un izpētītu lietu patieso dabu. 1928. gadā autors jau pilnībā bija nodevies spiritismam un draudzējās ar kartona fejām. Neliela atblāzma no tā parādās šajā stāstā. Atlanti, izrādās, ir telepāti un spēj sazināties ar domu spēku, paredzēt nākotni. Pārējie autora spriedelējumi, ka mainoties dziļumam ūdens staba spiediens nemainās, atlanti lieto sintezētu kafiju, kas neatšķiras no īstās (labi, ka viņi neēda kartupeļu biezputru) un gāze, kas deviņreiz vieglāka par ūdeņradi. Autors neko nav dzirdējis par kesona slimību un daudzām citām ar dziļūdens ekspedīcijām saistītām ligām. To visu viņš viegli būtu varējis noskaidrot pie vietējā fizikas skolotāja, bet nez kādēļ nav izdarījis. 5 no 10 ballēm.

Ja saliek kopā, lasīt jau var, pusaudžu gados šādi stāsti iet uz urrā. Literārās vērtības te nekādas nav. Te trūkst Žila Verna detaļu pamatīguma un esošo zinātnes sasniegumu izpratne. Visus stāstus var lasīt kā aizraujošus piedzīvojumus, ielikt viņus vēsturiskā kontekstā, izzondēt autora uzskatus par apkārtējo pasauli. Tas viss ir interesanti, taču ne tik ļoti, lai pieaugušā vecumā pārlasītu vēl un vēl. Autors var teikt, ko grib, bet viņa stāsti par Šerloku Holmsu ir un paliek vislabākie.

"Научните постановки" в заглавния кратък роман, в шестата и седмата творба и в двата последни разказа, в които отново се срещаме със стария ни познайник от "Изгубеният свят" - гениалният и безпардонен професор Челинджър - са остарели и наивни, и със сигурност ще предизвикат усмивки у съвременния читател, но това не променя факта, че сър Артър Конан Дойл е уникален сладкодумник. Има ги, разбира се, и окултните и езотерични търсения, от които авторът е бил неизменно изкушен, мяркат се, то се знае, и така любимите му призраци.

Daft but very enjoyable fantasy adventure about a group who go on an expedition to the depths of the ocean and not only encounter a number of strange and deadly creatures, but also discover the remains of Atlantis. And there are still people living there. If that sounds far-fetched, it leads to a climax that can only be described as bonkers.

Okay, that was the oddest mix of Jazz age sci-fi mumbo-jumbo, Greek myth, supernatural hogwash, ancient aliens, and poorly executed American slang, that I’ve ever read. As much as it pains me to say it about one of my favorite authors, this book stinks. Actually, it felt like it was three different stories or, at the very least, three different genres poorly strung together. To top all of that off, it has the strangest layout. The conclusion is roughly around the three-quarters mark. The last quarter is really strange and feels almost like another story altogether.
The first ‘section’ left me feeling that I had stumbled upon a poor rip-off of Jules Verne’s works. It has the unapproachable scientist determined to cloak his every move in secrecy, congenial slightly stupider chronicler along to let the rest of humanity in on the deep secret, and the hopelessly everyday mechanical genius providing the moments of comic relief. The only difference is that we are spared the extralong lists of fish species that Verne so enjoys.
The second ‘section’ had much more promise. It wasn’t really original, but it did have its moments of action and inventiveness, but mostly it felt like rather stock pulp sci-fi.
The last ‘section’ was just plain weird. I was certainly not expecting the supernatural battle some sort of eternal demon-man and the possessed scientist. I’m completely confused. There is absolutely no suspense. For some unaccountable reason, he gives us this story after their rescue so we know they make it. It doesn’t help make sense of anything about the rest of the story. It feels like a completely unnecessary PS or even part of another story that got tacked on by accident.
That made me a little mad that I wasted a couple hours on it. I would highly recommend that you give this one a pass.

Conan Doyle and a crazy professor (who looks a lot like Holmes) going on a deep sea adventure. And they find Atlantis?? Woohoo! What a ride!

It was a fun read, even if the stuff that happens right before the end was just a little, um, well...??? weird?? out of place?? I dunno, it didn't bother me, it was just so strange.

The science was crazy. The scientific language/names of all the undersea flora and fauna might turn off a modern reader but one can pass that by easily.

All in all, interesting to take a dive (ha ha) into another of Doyle's interests. He was a fascinating man.

শার্লক হোমসের স্রষ্টা হিসেবে স্যার আর্থার কোনান ডয়েলের খ্যাতি বিশ্বজোড়া। শার্লক হোমসের জনপ্রিয়তার কারণে ডয়েলের অন্যান্য লেখাগুলোর নামডাক তেমন একটা শোনা যায় না। যদিও তাঁর আরো কিছু ভালো বই আছে। দ্য ম্যারাকট ডিপ একটি বৈজ্ঞানিক কল্পকাহিনী এবং বইটিতে আরো চারটি ছোটগল্প রয়েছে যা অনেকটা কল্পবিজ্ঞান ও রোমাঞ্চকর ধাঁচের।

আটলান্টিক মহাসাগরে স্ট্র‍্যাটফোর্ড জাহাজডুবির ঘটনা পত্র-পত্রিকায় বেশ আলোড়ন তুলেছিল ১৯২৬ সালে। জাহাজটিতে ছিলেন বিজ্ঞানী ড. ম্যারাকট, সাইরাস হেডলি ও একজন আমেরিকান মেকানিক স্ক্যানলানসহ জাহাজের কতিপয় ক্রু। জাহাজটি কেন ঐ জায়গায় গিয়ে ডুবলো কিংবা কোন উদ্দেশ্য নিয়ে গিয়েছিল তা জানা যায়নি। তবে জাহাজডুবির পর কিছু সূত্র থেকে এই অভিযানের ব্যাপারে বিস্তারিত জানা যায়। সাইরাস হেডলির বন্ধুকে লেখা চিঠি, একটি রেডিও সিগনাল, অন্য একটি জাহাজের নাবিকের লগবুক এবং আশ্চর্য একটি কাচের গোলক থেকে পাওয়া চিঠি থেকে তাদের অভিযান সম্পর্কে বিশ্ববাসী জানতে পারে। কী ছিল তাদের উদ্দেশ্য? আর কেন-ই বা জাহাজটি ডুবে গেল?

পত্রিকার মধ্যে উদ্ভট বিজ্ঞাপন মাঝেমধ্যে দেখা গেলেও সেসবে সাধারণত কেউ মনোযোগ দেয়না। তবে এবারের একটি বিজ্ঞাপন চোখ এড়ায়নি ডা. হ্যামিলটনের। একদিন বা বেশি সময়ের জন্য একজন শক্তিশালী ডাক্তার এবং গুবরে পোকার ব্যাপারে বিশেষজ্ঞ লোক চেয়ে বিজ্ঞাপন দিয়েছিল কেউ। আগ্রহী হয়ে উঠে ডা. হ্যামিলটন। ডাক্তার কিংবা গুবরেপোকা বিশেষজ্ঞের সাথে শারিরীকভাবে শক্তিশালী হওয়ার কী সম্পর্ক?

প্রয়োজনের অতিরিক্ত যেকোনোকিছুই আমাদের জন্য অপকারী। লস অ্যামিগোস শহরের বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন কেন্দ্রে দাগী আসামি ওয়ার্নারকে আনা হয় বৈদ্যুতিক শকের মাধ্যমে মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকর করার জন্য। কিন্তু বৃদ্ধ জার্মান পিটার স্টালপেনাগেল সবাইকে বারণ করেন এইভাবে উচ্চ ভোল্টেজে মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকর করতে। কিন্তু সকলেই তাঁর কথা অগ্রাহ্য করে মৃত্যুদন্ড কার্যকর করতে যায়। তারা কি সফল হবে কিংবা কী এমন কারণ ছিল বারণ করার?

লেডি স্যানক্সের উপাখ্যান

ডগলাস স্টোন ও লেডি স্যানক্সের পরকীয়ার ব্যাপারে অভিজাত পাড়ায় কানাঘুষা চলে। কিন্তু এতে তাদের বিকার নেই। লর্ড স্যানক্স-ও যেন সবকিছু জেনেও চুপ হয়ে আছে। ডগলাস স্টোন একজন শল্যচিকিৎসক। একদিন রাতের বেলায় এক ব্যক্তি তাকে ডাকতে আসে। ঐ ব্যক্তির আত্মীয়া অসুস্থ, তাই স্টোন সাহেবও ডাক্তারি দায়িত্ব পালনে বেরিয়ে পড়ে। সেখানে পৌছানোর পর আশ্চর্য ঘটনা ঘটে। কী হয়েছিল সেখানে?

সত্যি বলতে বইটা আমার তেমন ভালো লাগেনি। অনুবাদ ঠিকঠাক ছিল। মূল গল্পটা প্রথমদিকে কিছুটা আকর্ষণীয় থাকলে পরবর্তীতে তেমন একটা আকর্ষণ করতে পারেনি। আর শেষ গল্পটা পড়ে ভাবলাম এই গল্পটা ঠিক কেন লেখা হয়েছিল! তবুও পাঠকরা শার্লক হোমসের স্রষ্টার অন্যান্য লেখার স্বাদ নিতে পড়তে পারেন। হ্যাপি রিডিং।

Un ottimo romanzo, scritto con un linguaggio di altri tempi, ma sempre affascinante e coinvolgente. "L'abisso di Maracot" di Sir Arthur Conan Doyle non si perde in chiacchiere e va dritto al sodo e forse, se non fosse mai stato scritto "Ventimila leghe sotto i mari", sarebbe stato un vero e proprio capolavoro. Ma non è solo questa "rivalità" a non dare giustizia al racconto, ma anche un finale che definirei leggermente sottotono.

Το 2010 διάβασα δυο βιβλία του Άρθουρ Κόναν Ντόιλ με ήρωα τον μοναδικό Σέρλοκ Χολμς (Το σκυλί των Μπάσκερβιλ, Το σημάδι των τεσσάρων), κατά τ'άλλα για κάποιον λόγο τον έχω αφήσει παραμελημένο σαν συγγραφέα, παρ'όλο που είμαι λάτρης της αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας. Και τώρα που έπιασα επιτέλους βιβλίο του Ντόιλ ξανά, έτυχε να είναι περιπέτεια φαντασίας/επιστημονικής φαντασίας, που ασχολείται με την μυθολογία της Ατλαντίδας. Λοιπόν, έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια κλασική περιπέτεια στον βυθό της θάλασσας, όπου τρεις άντρες κλεισμένοι σ'έναν θάλαμο φτάνουν στον πάτο του Ατλαντικού και εκεί ανακαλύπτουν την χαμένη Ατλαντίδα - ή ένα μέρος της. Θα ξετρελαθούν από την ομορφιά και την ποικιλία των φυτών και των πλασμάτων της θάλασσας, θα ξετρελαθούν ακόμα περισσότερο όμως όταν ανακαλύψουν ένα καταφύγιο και τους κατοίκους του.

Από άποψη δράσης δεν συμβαίνουν και πολλά πράγματα, σε σχέση με άλλα παρόμοια περιπετειώδη βιβλία της εποχής δεν έχει σκοτωμούς, κυνηγητά και τα τοιαύτα. Ίσως μόνο τα απολύτως αναγκαία. Όμως η ιστορία παρουσιάζει ενδιαφέρον χάρη στην όλη μυθολογία της Ατλαντίδας και στις ωραίες περιγραφές των τοπίων και των πλασμάτων. Η γραφή είναι καλή, ιδιαίτερα ευχάριστη και ευκολοδιάβαστη, οι χαρακτήρες αρχετυπικοί και με τα συνηθισμένα (αλλά αγαπημένα) κλισέ, ενώ η ατμόσφαιρα είναι με την σειρά της πολύ ωραία. Τέσσερα αστεράκια δεν μπορώ να βάλω, γιατί ήθελα λίγη δράση παραπάνω, ίσως κάποιες πιο πειστικές εξηγήσεις, όπως και περισσότερες πληροφορίες για την κοινωνία των Ατλάντων, όμως σίγουρα πέρασα καλά, ευχαριστήθηκα το βιβλίο σε μεγάλο βαθμό. Άλλωστε τέτοιες εξωτικές περιπέτειες παλαιάς κοπής πάντα μου άρεσαν και θα συνεχίσουν να μου αρέσουν.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best remembered today, of course, for the Sherlock Holmes stories. In fact these represented only a fraction of his output as a writer. He wrote in just about every genre you can think of, including science fiction, or it might be more accurate to call these books scientific romances. The Professor Challenger stories are the best known, especially The Lost World. Doctor Maracot, the hero of The Maracot Deep, bears some resemblance to Professor Challenger. The book concerns Maracot’s exploration of the world beneath the sea. Maracot and his companions find themselves stranded on the ocean floor, and discover a very unexpected world, in fact a civilisation, deep beneath the waves. I’m very fond of the science fiction of the past. Their visions of the future of humanity possess an optimism and a romance that simply isn’t possible to writers today. Published in 1929, The Maracot Deep won’t appeal to everyone, but if like me you have a taste for the science fiction of the 19th and early 20th centuries you should get a good deal of enjoyment from it.

Quickly read in one day and engaging. Definitely ahead of its time regarding oceanographic exploration, although the science is wrong, of course. The Atlantis aspect was novel, too. A stereotypical representation of an American was quite funny. Overall, was worth the read.

দ্য ম্যারাকট উপ্যানাস বিজ্ঞান-কল্পকাহীনী আর পরাবাস্তব জগতের মিশলে এক দুরদান্ত এক উপাখ্যান। প্রথমে পড়ে মনে হবে আপনি পিউর সায়েন্স ফিকশন পড়ছেন ,তার পর যখন সাগরের অতলে হারানো সভ্যতা খুছে পাবেন ,তখন শুরু হয় আর এক অন্য অ্যাডভেঞ্চার ,এরপর সাগরতলে অশুভ শক্তি বিরুদ্ধে লাড়াই এ আপনাকে নিয়ে যাবে এক পরাবাস্তব জগতে ।

এই বই অন্যান্য ছোট গল্পগুলোও খুবই ভালো ছিল , 'লেডি স্যানক্সের' উপাখ্যান আর 'নতুন সমাধি' একই ধাছের গল্প হলেও আপনার পড়ে একটুও বিরক্তি লাগবে না , আপনি দেখতে পাবেন দুইটা দুই ধরনের ,ঠান্ডা মাথার প্রতিশোধের দুর্দান্ত কাহিনী ।

Така тази книга събира научно-фантастични разкази на Сър Дойл, повечето от които имат елемент на спиритуалното. Един от тях е изцяло за къща обитавана от духове.
Главният разказ, "Маракотовата бездна", е научно-фантастичен и комбинира мита за Атлантида със слизането до дъното на океана на Жул Верн. Написан е в стила на приключенските романи от времето на Дойл и се чете леко и приятно, както и останалите разкази. Преводът на Явор Цанев също си казва думата в лекотата и красотата на текста.

In 1926, a scientist named Dr Maracot organizes an expedition to a spot in the Atlantic Ocean, right above what he asserts is the deepest trench in the ocean floor—the ‘Maracot Deep’ as he names it. Maracot and two companions, a young man named Cyrus Headley and a mechanic named Bill Scanlan, do not merely go to the spot, but descend—and tipping right over the edge of the Maracot Deep, find themselves falling into what was once Atlantis, but which now lies buried at the bottom. Still peopled.

I never thought that I would say this of an Arthur Conan Doyle book, but this one had me rolling my eyes pretty much from the moment our three heroes came in contact with the Atlanteans. Till then, it was a not-unbelievable bit of science fiction (though definitely hard to believe, especially when it came to the rather simplistic ideas of how pressure differences would or would not affect humans and marine creatures). After that, it became almost embarrassing in its flights of fancy. How the Atlanteans came to have escaped mass destruction didn’t irk me so much as the convenient ways in which Doyle dismisses fundamental requirements of air, food, potable water, and so much more. Or the fact that the Atlanteans, despite all the knowledge they have access to through their past, seem to have not the slightest inclination to try and change their fraught-with-danger existence.

All of that, as in Conan Doyle’s own The Lost World or Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth, is forgivable. I’ve read dodgy sci fi. I’ve read of early sci fi heroes finding humanoid life forms just about everywhere. I’ve read of the unlikeliest of life forms, defying gravity and pressure and oxygen requirements and basic physics. And I’ve forgiven them all.

What ruined The Maracot Deep for me was Conan Doyle’s introduction of a supernatural/divine/occultic element (not restricted to reincarnations!) into the story. He builds up something that doesn’t sound very plausible in the first place, and then wrecks it further by bringing in some pseudo-spiritual mumbo-jumbo that had really no place in what could have been a fun sci fi adventure.

Still, since it’s a quick read and never taxing, not utterly mediocre. But yes, if I were to read Conan Doyle’s non-Holmes work, I’d stick to his boxing stories.

After the somewhat mediocre The Poison Belt this new Doyle-adventure was a pleasant surprise. Not professor Challenger this time but another crazy - or should we be nice and say eccentric - professor. Namely Maracot. He leads the little group of three men on a fantastic voyage - to the deepest parts of the ocean. The story is collected from different sources - but mainly we follow a young zoologist, Cyrus Headley, who narrates most of the story.

One has to leave all credibility behind - and just jump into the ocean with them - because what happens next...well, I could tell you, but you wouldn't believe me. But it has something to do with strange sea creatures, a lost city and some evil spiritual forces.

OK, it's a short novel and the characters are undeveloped - but I enjoyed it a lot - this is just the kind of adventure I love to read about. True or not.

Did you know Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a boring book about deep-sea explorers discovering Atlantis? It's true!

It is far from his best work but, in his final novel, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle delivers a short and agreeable piece of routine adventure fiction. The Maracot Deep is, for the most part, a sea-adventure in the tradition of Jules Verne: three men, led by the brilliant professor Maracot, are descending into the depths of an ocean abyss – the titular Maracot Deep, named after its primary explorer – in a diving bell. After their lifeline is severed by a sea monster, they plunge deeper and deeper, beyond hope of rescue.

At the sea bottom, they discover the lost city of Atlantis, beginning the novel's second act. As lost cities go, I found this one a bit underwhelming. The Maracot Deep failed to truly bring out the wonder of this iconic legend, which has fascinated us ever since "Plato's report of Egyptian gossip" (pg. 42). Doyle's telling is conventional – Atlantis was an advanced civilisation, a 'missing link' which had "thrown out one arm to Central America and one to Egypt, and so left traces of themselves" (pg. 63) before collapsing into volcanic apocalypse and the tumult of the waves. By the time Maracot and his companions – Headley, who narrates the story, and Scanlan – encounter it, it is a diminished outpost of a few thousand people. To make the bit work, Doyle hand-waves away the scientific problems of water pressure at such crushing depths (in short, our established science is shown to be wrong), the darkness (Doyle's ocean floor is bioluminescent), and of oxygen (the Atlanteans have an advanced technology which is effectively an oxygen bubble worn around the head).

It's fine pulp-adventure fare, but no more than that. Nothing much is done with Doyle's Atlantis and its community never impresses itself upon the reader. Development of both plot and world-building is nil, and the sub-plot of Headley's love-interest, an Atlantean girl named Mona, is so sparse that I don't know why Doyle even bothered. Even by the standards of such gentleman-adventures, where women and romance are inconvenient distractions to all the manly exploration and camaraderie, The Maracot Deep felt shallow here.

Nevertheless, the novel sprung a strange surprise in its third and final act. Indulging Doyle's mysticism and spiritualism, which emerged towards the end of his life, the narrator Headley relates the three explorers' encounter with an ancient demon, once worshipped by some castes of Atlantis. Taking in ideas of reincarnation, a spiritual battle between good and evil, and outright magic, it was an abrupt shift in tone from the (broadly speaking) analytical and science-based fiction of the preceding acts.

The confrontation with this Ba'al-like demon reads like an abridged Tolkien, anticipating Gandalf's battle with the Balrog in The Lord of the Rings ("Go down into the Hell that has been waiting for you so long," Doyle has one of his characters incant on pages 147-8. "You are a prince of darkness. Go where the darkness is.") Even more peculiar was the demon's introductory boast on page 139, which had me wondering if Mikhail Bulgakov, who started writing The Master and Margarita in the year Doyle published The Maracot Deep, had ever come across some edition of it. "I am the master of the mob," Doyle's debonair devil says. "Where evil has been planned there have I ever been. I was with the Huns when they laid half Europe in ruins. I was with the Saracens when under the name of religion they put to the sword all who gainsayed them. I was out on Bartholomew's night. I lay behind the slave trade. It was my whisper which burned ten thousand old crones whom the fools called witches. I was the tall dark man who led the mob in Paris when the streets swam in blood. Rare times those, but they have been even better of late in Russia."

Many will find this end to the story more than a little bit kooky, but I quite liked Doyle's muddying of the waters here. It at least brought a bit of froth to what was threatening to become stale. Arthur Conan Doyle's final novel is for the most part hasty and conventional, but its emergent oddness meant "in some ways I wish that we could have stayed longer in the Maracot Deep for there were many mysteries there…" (pg. 110)
