Slight spoilers.
Okay. So there was a lot wrong with this book. I was looking through some of the other reviews and people said that they liked Remi. I didn't. He was a no-boundaries type of person and didn't wait or ask for consent, just went right ahead and did whatever he wanted. Let's start with him. He took advantage of Julianne when she was at her most fragile, made up some stupid apology and boom they were a couple. Remi was creepy and disrespectful towards Julianne and her wishes, not listening when Julianne said no 3 times, and hardly being there for her at all. All that he did for Julianne was cause her stress after she hung out with him. Remi also made the worst jokes that I have ever heard in my life. He wasn't funny and every time he told a joke, I wanted to smash my head into a wall.
Chloe.
Chloe was Julianne's sister. She was selfish and stupid and didn't support her sister at all. She was more of a friend than a sister, almost never talking to her sister about anything but boys, even though she was a med student or something. Julianne needed her as a friend though, because she didn't have any. Kat was gone and never responded to Jules's messages (that we know of) and Lucy didn't count. The author added in Lucy because she wanted to make it seem like Julianne had friends and wasn't a total loner recluse. If she could have she would have made it look like Julianne had no friends and only talked about the phoney construction site thing.
Julianne.
I didn't mind Julianne, but she was too much of a ditz, in my opinion. Her character wasn't there and neither was the arc. The one thing I did like about her was how connected the text made her seem to her mom. It made her look like she genuinely missed her, which it didn't do for Chloe. Julianne was gullible and would have done anything that Remi or the guys from the site told her to do.
Edward Kahn. (The Dad).
He was a hippie and a zombie that was barely in their lives and didn't do anything about getting sued.
He seemed like he missed his late wife, but it didn't go into depth on that, so we don't know.
The lawsuit.
The lawsuit was stupid. The Moores had no right over the Kahn's land and the suit didn't even go through anyway so it didn't matter. The Moores had been living in their house for 2 months and the Kahns in theirs for 30 years, so if anything the Kahns should be suing the Moores for making such a big disturbance.
The construction site.
No. I didn't like how this was her job. Especially that she was the only girl. It made it sound like Julianne was only working there because there were hot guys and she would be working outside. I also find it a bit sexist that there aren't any other girls at the job. If Julianne only applied for the job because she wanted to be with all these hot boys, then a lot of other girls would have had the same idea and they would have all gone to the construction site also. Or if you want to be more realistic, other girls would just want to go and be at the construction site because it's a good job and that's one of their strengths. It's definitely unrealistic that there's literally no other girl there at all and she's the only one. A construction site would be way more tight and harsh than what this text is insinuating. There are a lot of things that I find unrealistic, including the point above and this; Okay some of the guys are going to be nice to her, but others would be rude, sexist and downright awful towards her, hitting on her and making her feel uncomfortable. Others still would be close minded and think that a girl doesn’t belong on a construction site. Keeping in mind she is the only girl. I think the author should have put a serious instance where one of the guys was being sexist towards her. It's like the author didn't do any research.
Good things.
I like the details that were in this. All of the references to art and architecture were great too. I don't know much about these topics, so it was great to hear about them. The book did a good job at making me want to go to the beach and swim or just go outside in general.
General bad things.
One bad things that I would like to mention is how it failed at being a lot of things; the book failed at being funny, meaningful, sexy and relatable. The dialogue was fake-sounding or wooden and it was hard to read. The characters were hard to figure out and half of the time I didn't know what was going on. It wasn't enjoyable. There was nothing forbidden about Remi, therefore erasing the title of the book and changing it to “Love and Property Wars.” In the end the dad was just sad that she kept her relationship from him.
Nothing that Julianne did made me like her, in fact nothing that anyone in this book did made me like them, making my favourite character the dead mother. The book was a messy, rough and bumpy story with a boring beginning, a boring end and a chaotic middle with no space to breathe. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, totally slow and boring, please refrain from reading it,
