In my opinion, this was not one of the better Bookshots. With minimal character development and unbelievable scenes, I just didn’t find this too exciting or suspenseful.

A bodyguard chasing a suspect in a skirt and stilettos? I don’t think so. I pictured Abbie in a pencil skirt, one that you can’t really even walk too fast in let alone run in. And wearing expensive heels to a job that potentially puts you in unknown situations just seems super impractical and dumb. Another unbelievable aspect was when they were practically getting it on in a conference room while the other aides are just outside the door. It was just too awkward for me to believe.

The romance is off somehow too, maybe because there wasn’t enough character development for me to relate to Abbie or Jonathan in any way. I’ve read other Bookshots that also have the standard minimal character development but I have been able to see the connection. Here I didn’t see or feel it.

A short read so give it a try if you like, but I was disappointed in this one.

I liked it. Short and to the point. But I literally busted out laughing when I was done with this book. Why? I'm willing to bet big bucks that James Patterson has no idea what he's endorsing.

Bodyguard is the first installment in Jessica Linden's romantic suspense series titled Under Covers. This adult-only story is written under James Patterson's BOOKSHOTS imprint (fast reads for fast times). At 160 pages/2 hours, 55 minutes via audio, this is a quick and easy read, as the BOOKSHOTS selections are intended to be.

Bodyguard has politics, suspense, action, and a thriller element - all pretty engaging. My favorite part of this book was that the bodyguard was female! It's no surprise that kick@ss heroines are definitely my thing. I love watching stereotyped role-reversals and this one was a lot of fun to get into. The quick-onset romance incorporated throughout this story was very sexy as well. If you like short, sexy, thrilling reads, you should check it out!

My favorite quote:
"The sad fact was some people were hellbent on causing destruction and there was no way to stop all of them. The only thing left to do was minimize the damage."

James Patterson’s new Bookshots line (a fancy name for novellas) promises ‘Under 150 pages; Under $5, Impossible To Put Down’ and ‘Life Moves Fast, Books Should Too’. They are available currently in two categories – thriller and romance and can be read on any electronic device. Bodyguard by Jessica Linden is one of the new entries in the romance category, and true to that claim, took me just about an hour to read. It’s a timely political romance/romantic suspense story that was about more of a relationship with benefits than a romance with a surprising number of action scenes for its length. I’d say it delivers what’s promised.

Congressman Jonathon Lassitar is a man of the people. He’s charismatic, well liked, and one of the guys on the Hill who really wants to get things done; case in point – the legislation he helped put through to hinder Hak Tanir, a shadowy terrorist group involved in human trafficking. As a result, they’ve got Jonathon down as a target, and Abbie Whitmore is determined that he won’t be their next victim. She’s been hired by his people as a security expert/bodyguard, set to take her place as his ‘aide’ to explain her presence. Abbie and Jonathon clash over his desire to be accessible to the public and her mission to keep him safe. When an attraction blossoms between them, the danger he’s in takes on a more personal tone for Abbie. Can she protect him and her heart at the same time?

There isn’t a lot of character development in this story. We don’t know much about Abbie and Jonathon’s history or motivations except to say that Jonathon is the kind of politician that really has the people’s interests at heart, and Abbie has the skills necessary to do her job of protecting her client, whomever it might be. Their first kiss is not my favorite scene, being that Jonathon pulls a lesson from a politician currently in the headlines in the grab and go department, essentially kissing Abbie out of the blue leaving her to at first melt into his arms, then protest and push him away. Dallying with a client is definitely not something Abbie does normally, no matter how attractive or interested in her he might seem. Fortunately, later on there is more mutual interest between them, and after a particularly harrowing scene of a rally involving a gunman (the kind one hopes won’t actually happen in real life) the shared relief and heightened emotions in the aftermath lead to a more believable and mutually involved love scene. From then on, they hop into bed together on a few more occasions. There isn’t a lot of romance here, no courtship or public appearances as a couple, just some good sex and the sense that their emotions are becoming stronger without any ‘insta-love’ declarations.

For a novella, there are a suprising number of action scenes and a bit of a mystery too, that does get solved by the end. The group Hak Tanir pulls no punches and has no qualms about collateral damage and making anyone a target if it gets them to their goal. Abbie definitely comes across as an expert in her field, proficient in all forms of attack. It’s puzzling to me that she isn’t just introduced as extra security for Jonathon, given that she quickly reveals her skills in public and is obviously not just his ‘aide’. Later on, her judgement is impaired by her feelings for Jonathon and she makes some questionable choices that she’ll have to deal with down the road. The author does a good job of the behind the scenes look at Jonathon’s political campaign and the rally stops along the way. In the end, we get a suitable happy for now ending, one in which both Abbie and Jonathon agree that they want to pursue whatever this thing is between them. For a short read, Bodyguard did its job of keeping me entertained.

I'm not the target audience for this sort of book, but I wanted to see how they're structured and am always curious about Patterson's notion of "bookshots" as being an entire novel with everything cut out except the fun bits – turning 400 pages into just 100. Technically you could call it a novella, but novella's usually have less plot and more theme, whereas this reminds me more of those extended movie trailers where they show you pretty much the whole film in four minutes.

There's not a lot more to say about it. The characters are utterly one-dimensional, the prose isn't so much sparse as simplified to the point of relying entirely on the fact that you've seen all these scenes before enough times that you don't really need anything more that a couple of words to fill in the blanks yourself. Theme, suspense, intrigue . . . . there's just none of that. The romance isn't really believable (they see how sexy each other is, look in each other's eyes, and that's pretty much it). But I suspect that's kind of the point: complaining about this being a bad book is like going to the McDonald's drive-through and then complaining about the food.

Nobody's lying about what you'll get with Bodyguard by Jessica Linden, and the fact that – as snobbish as I'm sounding right now – I was still able to get through the entire book means that Patterson and Linden really do know how a modern reader's mind works. You'll read it, you might even enjoy it, and if at the end you feel a little horrified that you did, remember that you still keep going back to McDonalds when eating something more interesting and satisfying just feels like too much work.

Apologies to anyone who adores this book or any of the author's other work. It may have any number of redeeming qualities that I've missed due to my own inexperience with the genre and style.

I didn't really like this story. I got this in my stocking last Christmas and while I loved the premise, I just couldn't get into the story. Linden is a new-to-me author and I'll probably try another of her books before I move on.

A do-gooder politician, an assassination threat, a new bodyguard who will do anything to keep her new client safe. Danger, passion, stand up characters. Yes, I had a good time with Bodyguard. This is how all political romances should play out!

Alright so the gist is that Jonathan head up legislation against human trafficking and it's put him on the hit list for a trafficking group. He's sure he'll be fine and wants to continue his re-election tour but that's only going to happen if he accepts some extra security. Yep. He's getting a personal bodyguard in the form of one very tempting and determined woman.

I really enjoyed these two. Jonathan is just a good man who's trying to make the world a better place and is down to earth. He did have a couple TSTL moments (shock from a hero!) but overall he was a great character. And Abbie? Totally kick ass. She's fierce and has a take no prisoners attitude. I loved that she was the one with security and protection experience and wasn't afraid to throw herself into danger and get things done. She's got a good heart, too.

They were fun together. Had some growly moments before coming to an understanding. Had some nice chemistry and, whew, passion. And a touch of humor as well.

A handful of assassination attempts, the hunt for the bad guys, some surprises along the way-- this was just fun little escape. It's a HFN ending and while satisfying I do hope there will be more from these two.

PS-- I usually shy away from political characters but this one, I think, was handled nicely. No snipes at the "other side", no lecture vibe. Just a guy trying to make the world a better place. *nods*

A female bodyguard for a male politician was a fun role reversal! The story was heavy on action, light on politics, and had more steam than I was expecting for such a short read. However, the one thing that really bugged me (I'm just too practical) Abbie's penchant for wearing stilettos! I had a hard time picturing her in a skirt and stilettos, chasing bad guys as successfully as she did. A pantsuit and low heels would have been more effective..and believable. There isn't much character development between Abbie and Jonathan, but the story flowed reasonably well and kept me relatively entertained. Overall, I'll say Bodyguard was a decent read.

I really enjoyed this quick easy read. It was a good mix of action and romance that kept the story line moving. It jumped a bit In-between the second and third chapters where I kinda went 'what?' But it didn't put me off enough to stop reading.

Bodyguard

I'm not a romance reader at all so I may be judging this book a little harshly but it was so predictable and boring. I wanted something quick and mindless to read today and I sure got it. lol

Another quick and easy read from the Bookshots collection. I really liked the premise of a badass female bodyguard. It's kind of predictable, but I enjoyed the story and the characters.

I haven't read a BookShots release before, but I figured I'd give one of these quick reads a try. Unfortunately, it fell into my novella box. The story was good and I liked the characters, but things have to move fast to get everything in those over 140 pages and I miss the development of the relationship between the characters.

Another good quick read in James Patterson's Bookshots series. This introduces us to Abbie Whitmore who is a competent professional woman acting as a bodyguard to a politician who has been receiving death threats after successfully combating a human trafficking group.
As this is a romance as well as a thriller (probably more of the former than the latter) there soon grows a mutual admiration between protector and protectee despite Abbie's wishes to remain entirely professional. This admiration is consummated twice in a couple of steamy scenes in the book.
Despite her best intentions, the bad guys make a move on the politician in the end but naturally she saves the day (and his life).
After the threat is over and her assignment ends, the inevitable question is whether the two of them will still be together or was their romance a short-lived thing? This question is answered right at the end of the book, but I won't spoil it for anyone who wants to read it for themselves.

In all honesty, I would give this one a 2.5 star rating. It was quick and to the point like the premise behind the book but it did not live up to the "Impossible to stop reading" acclaim on the back of the book. I was left with more questions than feelings of completion and satisfaction. Abbie was a tough but very simple character. And yes for a book of 140 pages I suppose you could not get too complex. Jonathan Lassiter was a good enough character that made me want to know him more but his name made me think of Pixar each time I saw it. It did say on the back that I could devour it quickly but it was in about 45 min not the few hours it suggested. And honestly the hotness I was hoping for was simply not there.

This was a very light read. Part of the appeal was that I would be able to finish listening to the book on a drive home. The story was engaging and witty. But, Ms. Linden lost me when the female bodyguad, Abbie, wore expensive stilettos for work. Seriously. And, we are supposed to believe she was able to run in them and kick butt. Now, this would be in stark contrast with her no nonsense attitude when it came to keeping Jonathan safe and wold get frustrated with him when he didn't inform her of his meetings in a timely matter.

Interesante pero bastante rápido, siento que no se desenvolvió muy bien la trama por ser tan corto. Los personajes están bien. Las partes eróticas también me agradaron.

2.5 This one was just alright. I didn't get invested in these characters for whatever reason. A quick read but not one that is going to stay with me very long.

I did appreciate the fact that an allergic reaction with one if the characters was handled correctly with their Epi Pen.

Short and enjoyable but It missed some in the character development. I mean I know this is supposed to be a romantic suspense, but it missed the mark on that. It was, however, a quick, enjoyable read easily read in a couple hours

Quick medical lesson:
An EpiPen (or any epinephrine injector) should only be used by an untrained bystander in one of two circumstances:

(1) when a conscious person who has an injector prescribed to them asks you to use it on them.

(2) when an unconscious person is known to be allergic to a substance*, is believed to have come in contact with or ingested that substance, and is experiencing difficulty breathing and/or swelling in the throat or mouth as a result.

That's it.

Injecting a person who is not experiencing anaphylactic shock will damage their systems and can potentially kill them. Even someone appropriately injected should receive additional care from emergency personnel. It's potent.

✓ Call 911 first.
✓ Remove any packaging from the injector if needed.
✓ Hold the injector in your fist (DON'T put your thumb on the top of the pen).
✓ Jam the needle/orange end against the outside of the person's thigh and hold it in place.
✓ Count to 10.
✓ Confess your undying devotion.
✓ Wave down first responders.

*Keep in mind that #2 also assumes the person has been prescribed an EpiPen/epinephrine injector for their allergy and has it with them or in an accessible location.

---------------

On the book...
When someone chooses to ignore (or doesn't know) any and all accuracies related to private security, law enforcement, political rallies, public image, and medicine, then writes a novella including all of those things.

I'm not pedantic about little inaccuracies but literally every scene in this book seems to include some level of inaccuracy, from using an EpiPen when it's not appropriate to ignoring the public image issues that would result from a male politician insisting on his inexperienced, unknown, attractive, female "aide" sleeping in the neighboring hotel room by themselves (while the other aides are.. somewhere else never mentioned). Not to mention the constant violations of legal and ethical limits by the private security officer.

To top it all off, I felt like there wasn't much of a buildup to the attraction between these two, which also made the conflict feel overly dramatic for the established relationship.

Oh, and the unnecessary drama was weird. For example, when she hears him mention one generic name on the phone and assumes it can only refer to one very specific person and that his mention can only refer to one specific activity and that that activity can only indicate one specific pattern of behavior and that that behavior can only demonstrate he's an a**hole. Suddenly, him saying a generic name = he's a piece of sh*te and becomes drama. So artificial and manufactured.

Lastly, I find it curious that the author goes out of their way to point out that there's only one female aide (and she turns out to be not great at her job). I'm not sure if he's meant to be sexist (which seems like a poor choice for his likeability) or if it's to remove "competition" for the FMC (who is theoretically great at her job, even if her actions in the book suggest otherwise) or what. Why is her being the only woman important? Why aren't there other women? Odd.
