Name (in native language) : 高屋奈月

Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.

She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.

In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.

According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.

This was a Yuki-centric volume which I am much less interested in (sorry, Yuki, you're just not my beloved Kyo), but still good.

We get a good glimpse into Rin who I have a much different opinion of now than I did when I initially read the series. I used to think she was annoying, now I think her story is just so sad/I'm more sympathetic to her motivations.

Some very good emotional moments, but overall, I didn't quite enjoy this volume the same way I did the previous one. Isuzu's story was very heart-breaking as well as Isuzu seeing behind Tohru's "wall." Also the moment with Momiji! *sobs*

People like me cling to kind people. We leech them dry. That's why I won't involve anyone else in this. It's better if I go it alone.
I've been there, Rin. Not to the point of literally throwing myself out of windows or other physical means of self-destruction, but the whole hedgehog's dilemma thing, you bet.

Self-loathing is a form of self-centeredness. Someone who focuses too much on their own limitations, or the pain they're inflicting on others, or can't bring themselves to let their guard down or trust anyone, also cuts themselves off from friendship or love...

...or tries to. This will meet with no success, when it comes to Saint Tohru. ;)
She doesn't let anyone see it, but... on the other side of that door... I somehow get the feeling that she's quietly falling apart.

I love that this volume really goes deeper into Yuki and Rin's backstories so we can get to know them better as fleshed out characters. The more of this manga I read the deeper I fall in love with it. No manga could ever come close to how I feel about Fruits Basket, it changed my life in ways unimaginable.

I think I'm going to say this in every single one of my reviews for these mangas but I don't care so too bad. This is my COMFORT SERIES! I literally cannot be in a bad mood when reading these books. Unless of course something sad is happening but even then I wouldn't say that's a bad mood. I could be severely depressed irl and read this and immediately my spirits would be lifted.

Trigger Warning for Child Abuse and Verbal Abuse in this Volume.

I wanted to first off put the trigger warning out there for child abuse and verbal abuse so if anyone is triggered by that, please be careful going into this manga. I love the fact that this manga is diving into the complexity of the characters past and learning about how these characters got to be who they are. They aree challenging long held beliefs or ideas that they have had about themselves and others and it's really interesting to watch. Of course it is heart breaking to know that some of these characters were abused and I remain vague to avoid spoilers. This volume was a really powerful and painful volume to read to see these characters suffer was horrible but it was also eye opening. This manga does dive so deep into their lives and I love it. I can't wait to see these characters grow more and to read the next few volumes in this manga series.

I managed to squeeze in one more!

In my opinion, this is where the story really picks up. Characters are coming to terms with their emotions - however slowly. Tohru has a goal now! She wants to break the curse, she is now an active player in the game. The roles of the older members of the zodiac are explored further and the trauma that the Sohma family carries is now more apparent to them all.

I’ve ordered number 8 and am hoping to receive it soon, though ordering manga in the UK is quite difficult atm…

Rin's backstory was the best and most emotional part of this volume. Previously we have seen Rin being rude against Tohru and literally anyone that has crossed her path. In this volume we learn that Rin's parents initially pretended that they are a happy family despite being Sohma and Rin being one of the zodiacs. However, this charade cracked when Rin asked why they were happy all the time. The rejection has hit Rin really hard. She ended up living with Kagura and her mother but could not integrate into this happiness. The only one that could reach Rin was Haru that is romantically interested in her and Rin really cares for Haru as well. However, somehow, Akito finds out about the relationship between Rin and Haru and ask who of them that Akito should punish for this. Rin takes all the blame and gets hit by Akito that says that he hates women. Akito then says that he does not need Rin and pushes her out the window. Hiro sees this and at present day still ask Rin if she thinks he is responsible for Akito pushing Rin out the window.

This is about Tohru and her connection with the members of Chinese Zodiac characters.

This collection was more difficult for me to get into, because it was a bit scattered. I was confused about what was happening with Rin, but that whole storyline was so sad. Although I'm starting to see how this love triangle might work out, so that's nice to get a clear idea. Over halfway through the series!

i’d say this is more of a transitional volume, not too much conflict resolution here. a few things were set up in the story and there was topics that were built upon, but hot necessarily a completion of much. we get to see a lot into rim’s past which i always enjoy as a horse year girlie😂. definitely still enjoyable and a fun time
