About the author

Devika Fernando

50 books197 followers
Almost as soon as Devika Fernando could write, she imagined stories and poems. After finishing her education in Germany and returning to her roots in Sri Lanka, she got a chance to turn her passion into her profession. Having lived in Germany and in Sri Lanka with her husband has made her experience the best (and the worst) of two totally different worlds – something that influences her writing. Her trademark are sweet, yet deeply emotional romance stories where the characters actually fall in love instead of merely falling in lust. She draws inspiration from everyone and everything in life. Besides being a romance novel author, she works as a self-employed German web content writer, as a translator, and as a faithful servant to all the cats, dogs, fish and birds in her home. What she loves most about being an author is the chance to create new worlds and send her protagonists on a journey full of ups and downs that will leave them changed. When she’s not writing, she’s reading or thinking about writing.

This is the second book I’ve read by this writer. The first being ‘When I See Your Face’. There is a world of difference between both the books. Literally, they are set in different parts of the world. Writing wise, the writer seems to have matured a lot.

Emily had her heart broken by the devilishly handsome Alejandro nine years ago. Moving on hasn’t been easy. Their paths cross once more reopening old wounds. Things escalate quickly, sparks fly and the desire for forbidden seems to have amplified since the meet. Does Emily resist temptation? Does history repeat itself? I’m not answering that. It’s prudent to read the book I say!

The writing was perfect and the characterization was quite precise. The narration did jump timelines but that was seamless. The setting had a huge scope for the writer to describe Spain and she did exactly that. However, I was a bit unsure if the writer actually has visited Spain or done her research well. She elaborates both on the common places to visit and the places less visited by tourists. Given that both the central characters were from the tourism industry, it could have been easy to go off track and elaborate on the setting more than it was needed. The writer thankfully stuck to what she was actually supposed to do – Writing a romance. At certain point smack in the middle of the book, I felt the writer could have actually ended the story at that point. Only later when I actually finished the book I realized why she actually went on (That is one potential spoiler which I’m not giving out!). The writer certainly scores huge on the emotions and pacing!

MY SAY: One neatly packaged romance!

RATING:

PLOT: 4/5

CHARACTERISATION: 4/5

NARRATION: 4/5

OVERALL RATING: 4/5

The back and forth between past and present was well done and allowed me tantalising hints of why Alejandro and Emily were behaving in a certain way when they met again after nearly a decade. The chemistry was great, aided and abetted by the gorgeous location, Spain!
I tended to skip over the descriptions of geography and architecture so that I could stay with the action. The author, as expected from her other books I've read, presented a plot that was well structured and the dialogue moved it in the right direction - towards a sweet (hot) happily ever after!

This is the second book that I have read by the author (and it is also Book #2 in Romance Round The World Series) ; the first one being Saved in Sri Lanka (which is incidentally Book # 1 in the same series).

While I had liked Saved in Sri Lanka - I liked this one a LOT more. Though I must say that even in Saved in Sri Lanka - I had enjoyed the love story; I just needed more of it. In that book, there was far too much of Sri Lanka, and not enough of the love story (according to me that is); but this book struck the perfect balance (again - according to me).

There were enough details about Spain (the people, the sights, the food ) to make me want to add it to my ‘must-visit’ list, but it is the romance that outshone everything else - which is exactly what I expect from a romance novel.

Initially this book reminded me of Sweet Revenge by Oliver La Font ; mostly because, like Sweet Revenge, this book had everything that I normally love in romances, packed in a neat little bundle.

So, yes, in that way, this book had a huge advantage right from the beginning. But I must give credit where credit is due, which is why, I have to say that the author did a fabulous job of handling this story.

It was pretty fast paced, with flashbacks inserted at perfect intervals, and even then there was never a huge dump of backstory, but just enough to give the reader an insight, and enable them to connect the dots on their own.

And unlike Sweet Revenge, where I felt that the climax lacked emotional depth after setting a very high standard at the start; Ms. Fernando stuck to the high standards she set in Chapter 1, and followed it right to the climax.

Overall:This book has a very atmospheric feel to it; the author takes you on a virtual tour of Spain, to experience the sights, the culture, the food, and even fall in love with Alejandro and Emily. I would certainly recommend this to everyone who enjoys reading this genre.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book by the author in exchange of an honest review.

'Seduced in Spain' is a sweet tale of second chances at one's first love. It is the second in Devika Fernando's series of multi-cultural romances, which explore how different cultural perspectives serve to make the path to an HEA bumpy. In fact, this author not only makes this road rocky; she throws a figurative landslide followed by an avalanche at this couple.

Alejandro (how I love that name) is a Spanish billionaire hotelier weighed down by guilt about his father and not following in his footsteps in the family vineyard. Emily is a German tourism management whiz who fell, hard, for Alejandro nine years earlier as both were finishing their degrees. Snippets of that whirlwind courtship are revealed throughout their present day, tumultuous relationship, along with a taste of the beauty and glory of Spain. It is fascinating to see how each has grown in different aspects of their lives, yet both have a sense of being incomplete. Until they reconnect.

There were times I wanted to shout and others, when I wanted to cry as the reasons for their relationship failing were gradually revealed.

I fell in love with Alejandro's family and the hard-working folk in his village amongst the vineyards. These people are a clear demonstration of how well drawn secondary characters resonate with readers and whose inclusion adds to our understanding of the protagonists through the various interactions.

A delightful read. Recommended for readers of sweet contemporary, with a twist of multicultualrism.

Seduced in Spain, it is a beautiful story – brilliantly penned.

The characters are strong, independent, and somewhat relatable. The mundane office activities were interestingly written. Alejandro is described as an alpha male who grabs attention wherever he goes. Whereas Emily is a shy woman with a fierce attitude. She might look like a timid woman but she knows how to stand for herself and come out as a strong independent woman.

Honestly speaking, I could not let go of the book without falling in love with the characters. I loved the concept of finding love at a second chance. I have read many stories revolving around office romance and consequences of long distance relationship but what makes this story different from the rest is the writing style.

The description of Spain is picturesque will make you feel like you are in Spain and all those activities are happening in front of you. Man! I really want to visit Spain someday. The best thing about the book is it gives you all the right feels. Long distance relationships are hard but not impossible. A little trust can do wonders.

Even if the book is well written, you may find it a bit extra-detailed at some places which at times could be tiresome to read for someone who doesn’t like minute details. If you have not been to Spain (like me) or have no idea about its culture, either you might have to constantly Google what the author is talking about when she describes a place or an event or imagine your own scenarios with her description. Apart from this, I don’t find anything not worth loving.

I got a chance to beta read this book by Devika Fernando and later the final MOBI version in return for my honest review.

Alejandro from Spain is a hero to die for and the German heroine Emily is perfect for him. The author has brought you many scenes from this lovely country and also a lot of background about the hotel and tourism industry. Well researched plot with a yummy romance in the foreground.

Emily had met Alejandro in Valencia, Spain, nine years ago. He had broken her heart and it refused to be mended again. Now, on a business trip to a hotel convention, Emily meets the man who had stolen her heart. Sparks fly! Will Emily be able to survive this time round?

Alejandro has done the unpardonable. Despite being the son of a family owning vineyards, he takes off on his own to become an hotelier. That he has become a great success doesn’t seem to count. Will he ever be able to set right relationships?

This is a lovely romance between the beautiful Emily and a super hot Alejandro set in Spain. Even more than the romance, I was absolutely touched by the healing that takes place between Alejandro and his family.

This second book in Devika Fernando’s Round the World series is most definitely worth a read if you are a fan of romances.

Seduced in Spain by Devika Fernando is book 2 in the Romance Round the World series. This is a stand alone novel and could be read out of order.
Emily Wagner is the Personal Assistant to one of Germany's popular hotel chains, who is also the biggest slimeball alive. They are at a conference in Spain when he sees someone from her past, the man who broke her heart all those years ago.
Alejandro Alvarez is every woman's wet dream. He's tall, dark, handsome and rich and he's set out to make Emily pay for her betrayal from long ago.
This book was super sweet and a hefty dose of clean, vanilla romance. It is for those who like happy endings and second chances. I feel in love with being in love and how assumptions can ruin what could possibly be your happily ever after.
Devika goes into so much detail regarding the scenery that I would like to visit Spain just to see if what she described is accurate.

There are a few books that you would pick not because of the enticing cover, a hooking blurb, or a brow raising title but the Author. This is one such book, being an ardent fan bowled over by all her previous books – Seduced in Spain was already a part of my kitty. I received the review copy ahead from the author as amazon ditched me from pre-ordering.

I wouldn’t call this a review but an experience

My take here:
The opening scene starts off with Emily at Spain, feeling uncomfortable for having met Alejandro. Indeed a very catchy beginning that hooked me right there to know what went wrong. As usual, Devika Fernando bowled me over again and again with her microscopic details and diction with every single word. Wanna read a gist? Here you go!
Her blood was rushing in her ears, and she felt fuzzy as if she had jumped up from bed in the middle of the night. Unblinkingly, she stared at the man, so far yet so close, not hearing what he was saying.
The novel starts off at the right place and details of why, what went wrong, followed by what was done to make it right seduces the reader to dive deep in each sentence, slurping every word and falling in love with ‘seduced in Spain’ all over again!
Emily and Alejandro gets equally meaty roles, Author Devika has beautifully weaved the story with a striking conversation that lead to more of a summer fling which actually is not, every words adds to the transition of ‘not-a-fling’ but much more. Distinctive characters, and virtues of Emily and Alejandro, would want the reader to literally pray for them to get along together-forever.
The plot sounds familiar, but the way it is handled is new and fresh. For those who are done with bloody feministic books or chauvinistic books, this novel would give a clean fresh love story that would even make those who have lost hopes in love to look forward for one. You would start looking for Alejandro or Emily, trust me!
Pace wise, the novel is a bit slower than Devika’s other novels. It was slower enough that you would want to skim though but beautiful enough that you would want to digest the book word by word. A new experience, because, slow books never worked with me but her books do.
Wonderful world building and settings, a virtual Spain tour, yes! Though I felt ‘Saved in Srilanka’ was a much better tour.
Dialogues were new, spicy, peppered with romance and cute lust that makes you want to be Emily to hear Alejandro say those words to you. I loved the emotional play in mind, the butterfly effect in the heart and the throbbing new blood rush to know that someone likes you.
Beautiful craft indeed, it had more of ‘showing’ than ‘telling’ it sounded like literally watching a pair talking to each other.
I would rate this book 4/5 as the pace didn’t work well with me. If you want to read a proper romance, a book set in a different unexplored part of the world, a book with diction, vocabulary and grammar on par with excellence, you already know this book is your pick. Grab a copy, you’ll never regret!

Devika is effortless at romance and spinning tales of love that leave the reader spellbound. Seduced In Spain is no exception. It is the second novel in the series of romance around the world, Saved in Sri Lanka is the first which brought alive the natural beauty of the island nation. After having read most of her books, I was pleasantly surprised to get hooked onto this book from the first page.

Seduced in Spain is a page-turner, which left me breathless as I tried to figure out Alejandro and his quicksilver ways. Smart, handsome, commanding and a tad emotional – he is the perfect hero, an ideal guy to fall in love with. His soft, emotional side is also shown and he took my heart as well as Emily’s :)

Beautiful, vivacious, sincere, and hardworking Emily had her heart broken by him and the heartbreak is what keeps her going. Work is all that matters to her but it is work that brings her close to Alejandro once again. She has finds herself falling for his charms yet again. Work and love mingle as the two of them rediscover each other, their past and a possible future. The novel is a page-turner with a spin around Spain as love brings the two together and their family closer.

Seduced in Spain is not just about the two lovers but also how families play a role in our lives – to bring us closer or to tear us apart. Devika effortlessly weaves in the family and gives the reader a glimpse of the traditional life as well. The home, the vineyards, the family gatherings, the love, the food and the feeling of being home. She made me yearn for my family while I read of the lovebirds meeting Alejandro’s family.

The author takes us on a beautiful spin across Spain and his heritage that makes our hero so irresistible. It was a wonderful read while I visited Spain with Emily as she is wooed in style. The lovers find themselves stronger as they find each other.

A love that nurtures, grows and supports is what Seduced in Spain revels in and I turned the last page with a contented smile on my face. Clearly, Devika is getting more articulate with each new book as she spins a tale of love that surpasses any other book of hers. I still have the image of the dinner at Alejandro’s home and feel as if I am feasting with them. I am a fan of her writing – sublime, sweet and a dash of passion.

Seduced in Spain is a fantastic summer read, especially if you have never been to Spain. Fernando's prose is well researched and her storyline is like a cross between French Kiss and A Good Year, although, those two stories take place in France's wine country, Fernando's takes place in Spain. It is original in every respect, I compare it to those stories because it takes you deep into Spain's wine country, while also giving the reader a glimpse of tourism. I have to admit that I did not know about Spain's wine country and I love to learn while I am entertain. 5 stars all the way for storyline, research, character development and overall entertaining read! There is a special bonus of Save in Sri Lanka (another 5 star review of mine) at the end of the story, so it is like getting two books in one!

This book was so sweet. It made me want a Spanish lover of my own. At first this story seemed a little hard to follow, what with the author switching back and forth between the past and present day, but you quickly get immersed in the story. It is amazing the things that Alejandro will do to get back to Emily, but is she really as immune to him as she pretends to be? Can she keep her heart from getting broken again? This story goes to show how sometimes things are not as they appear, and sometimes people do deserve second chances. It also goes to show how cruel fate can sometimes be. This is not one of those steamy, knock your socks off, knocking boots, type books. It is more like a high school sweethearts find each other again type story. You won’t need any candy with this story, it is full of saccharine all on its own.

Seduced in Spain is second book in the Romance round the world series by Devika Fernando, but it’s a standalone read and complete in itself. I must say the cover is fabulous and the author is to be congratulated for it. The story is full of ups and downs for the lead couple. The hallmark of the book is that it is set in exotic locales. The setting rings true and you get detailed view of the region. The author takes you to Spanish festivals, acquaints you with traditions and whisks you off to vineyards and museums. The food and flavour of the region is beautifully explored. The Alpha hero has his vulnerable moments and the heroine, though shy, is determined and staunch
