But love came looking for her.

Sparks instantly fly between the two, and Caryn can’t resist his charms as she discovers that Andrew has a reputation for winning—both on and off the ice. But, when Caryn’s parents disapprove of the match and threaten to disinherit her and his hockey team trades him to a new city, it may take more than love for the couple to survive this penalty play.

This Piece of My Heart was the first book in the Clearing the Ice trilogy by Robyn Ryan. It was also my first book by the author.

Andrew Chadwick was a professional NHL player. He was in the off season training when he ran into Caryn - literally. And his life was changed.

Caryn Stevens was a graduate student with her future path all set. She couldn’t deviate or she would be a disappointment to her parents. And the last thing she needed was a distraction.

Although This Piece of My Heart was a trilogy, it didn’t end on a cliff hanger and could be read as a stand-alone. Ryan took us through the introduction and relationship development highlighting challenges and drama along the way. It was well written and well developed. In the end it was a sweet, “good feels” romance with likable characters.

Additionally, I loved that it was a complete HFN storyline without a gut wrenching cliff hanger. There is still plenty more to explore, so now it’s on to the second book of the trilogy, This Piece of My Soul. Ryan will now take us to the next journey of Andrew and Caryn’s relationship.

ACTUAL RATING: 3.5 STARS.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Caryn Stevens was tired of her controlling father. He is grooming her to be the future CEO of their company, in which Caryn was forced to take a business course and to enroll into grad school after.

Andrew Chadwick was just the hottie runner around the corner until he smashed into Caryn, literally. Guilty of her spilled dinner on the ground, Andrew went to buy her dinner and flowers. That is when everything started for the two of them. He just got out of a two-year dysfunctional relationship with a drama queen and is off for a clean start. Caryn interests him because she is nothing like his ex, a breath of fresh air after being in a polluted zone.

At first, Caryn thought that Andrew is a grad student. Turns out, he is a professional hockey player. Everything seems to be going well for them, except from the disapproval of her father, until Andrew was traded to another team in another state.

This is a light-hearted hockey (Wee! I love hockey!) romance that tackles the struggle of long distance relationships and disapproving rich parents. I love how Caryn still persevered through her studies after the falling out with her parents and the distance that separated her with Andrew. I've been always waiting for them to have time together again. Andrew is such a sweet guy that would give everything for her girl.

This book was well-written sports-wise, Robyn Ryan really knows hockey and the backside of sports by heart. I think I am just looking for some major twist except for the things already mentioned at the blurb. And sometimes I just find everything dragging. This book was actually like a window view to the life of professional athletes, I would applaud Robyn's knowledge to the ins and outs of sports business (which was because of her internship with a professional hockey team as stated at the end of the book).

Anyhow, I like Tom's character, Andrew's brother. He is such a sweet big brother both to Andrew and Caryn. I hope there is a chance that we'll see his own book in the future!

This is the first book of Clearing the Ice series followed by This Piece of my Soul, continuing the story of Andrew and Caryn.

This book is a sweet love story about a hot hockey player and an innocent college student. There is insta-love, but there were will struggles. I liked this book a lot and look forward to the next book in this series.

Caryn’s parents are very strict. They want her to have a rich boyfriend and she has to take over the family company. She has to take certain courses at college to be the best for the company. To not have too many courses during the fall, she decides to take summer classes. One day after class, she’s distracted and runs into someone. He’s a man she has seen running for a few times and she loves his blue eyes. Andrew is always in a zone while running and didn’t see Caryn. He walks her home and they have a nice conversation. Caryn is different than the women Andrew knows.

Later that day, Andrew is still thinking about Caryn and decides to visit her. He wants to get to know her better. For the rest of the summer, they spend all their free time together and become a couple. When the fall starts, Caryn’s classes will start soon and Andrew has to go away for several weeks for hockey matches since he’s a professional hockey player. They can’t wait to see again. They want to be together, but not everyone wants them to be together.

Caryn is a sweet, caring, shy and innocent woman. She didn’t know what she wanted as a job, so she just followed her parents. She doesn’t love every course she takes, but she always manages to pass them. But she eventually doesn’t want to let her life be controlled by her parents anymore. She wants to be with Andrew and have a future with him. She felt the connection with Andrew from the start. Caryn became stronger when the book progressed and knows better what she wants.

Andrew is a strong, sportive, smart man who knows what he wants. He knew immediately that Caryn was special and loves to spend time with her. He can’t stop thinking about her and wants to be with her forever. Andrew and Caryn’s love is strong. They definitely want to fight for each other. It won’t always be easy, but it’s all worth it in the end.

The secondary characters are also great. Lauren is amazing friend of Caryn and she’s always there for her. They always have a good time together and laugh a lot. They help each other study. Tom is Andrew’s brother. He’s nice and sweet. He’s kind to Caryn and he immediately liked her.

I didn't finish this book. I was planning to but then I decided that I wasn't enough of a masochist.

Usually, I stop reading a book if it
a) is horribly written
b)pisses me the fuck of
c)is too long and nothing happens
d)makes no sense

Now, there is a new reason for not finishing a book.
e)too many cliches

I'm not even kidding. I read about a quarter of it and there were literally over a dozen in just that much.

There was the eye color thing, the "instant connection", a previous relationship that was bad, girl who has no idea how "special" she is, virgin female protagonist, knight in shining armour moment, the "do you have a twin" line, the thing where they give each oher unique names, and I could go on. But I think I've made my point.

It's as if the author did and extensive reasearch on cliches and then shoved them all in there. I was highly amused.

But it wasn't just that. The writing wasn't good, the characters were generic, the conversations made me cringe, it was a bit awkward and the tone was YA. The characters would drink wine and I would wonder since when teenagers started drinking wine. Then I'd remember that they weren't teenagers.

Overall, I may have finished the book just for the sake of counting the cliches, but I don't have that much time. Do not recommend.

Robyn M. Ryan’s THIS PIECE OF MY HEART is a great start to the Clearing the Ice series. While attending summer school, College student, Caryn Stevens, literally runs into NHL star, Andrew Chadwick, and sparks fly. This contemporary sports romance takes place in Toronto, Ottawa, and St. Louis. It is suitable for New Adult audiences.

THIS PIECE OF MY HEART is a cute story. I like how the characters met. Andrew is a sweet guy. He is supportive and believes in Caryn. Caryn is likeable. Her father is understandably overprotective. However, he goes overboard by pretty much controlling her life. I like that she eventually does what she wants.

The characters grew throughout the story and overcame obstacles. Andrews ex, Monique, is dramatic, manipulative, and selfish. She is the opposite of Caryn. I’m glad he wised up and got rid of her. She causes some interesting complications in the story. Not to mention the stuff Caryn’s father pulls. I appreciated how Andrew was supportive during that time.

THIS PIECE OF MY HEART is an enjoyable read. The story was believable and the characters likeable. I like how the story ended and look forward to reading the couples story in the next book, THIS PIECE OF MY SOUL, scheduled to release on January 1, 2017.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

I feel like this book contains so many missed chances of the author to make it more dynamic and interesting, but instead it just flows on without much of a highlight...

I read this book but I wasn't satisfied with it, it is a well written book and the author has her own flair, let me picture it this way, it is like I am walking on a straight road in the desert and I just walk and keep on walking, there is nothing except for red-hot-dry-dirt everywhere and then there is a green tree, a sign of life and I run to it but it's just one tree a delight soon I am tired with all the walking and I realize that I am parched and exhausted and I continue to search for signs of life, I see small green trees in the distance but nothing close to me all seems far away, and I am still looking for the oasis which would give me much needed tranquility somewhere where ever that would be in this vast desert. Finally at the end of the journey I am left feeling perplexed at what I had gone through.

"No one calls you Drew?"
"Not yet."
She smiled at him. "You look like a Drew to me."
"It's all yours, then."

The beginning of the book started off with a bang we have the protagonists going out on dates, spending time together, getting to know each other, a very slow building romance and which was all very cute and sweet but not throughout all the book. It was like having a migraine. The turns in the story are just minor hiccups that can't even be seen as something point worthy because it was just too simple to be considered a huge problem. All the major problems were given away in the blurb and hence no surprise there. It was just a very plain story.

This book which I thought would be romance in the sports world was a definite let down, I had hoped for some interesting twists and turns or may be a climax in the story that may help keep me interested in the story but alas nothing of that sort, I was bored to no end, I even tried skimming the pages looking for anything interesting. It was a major disappointment to me. I tried it just wasn't my cup of tea. It was just romance and only romance. There were some sports events, but mostly it was just two people who are living in their lovely world.

I have the feeling the author really loves the characters that she has developed and build but with not much layers of personality it was mostly single dimensional, the blurb of the book already mentions all the major issues in the book no surprise factors. On top of that the characters issues are very minor aside from what is mentioned in the blurb, I believe it is safe for me to assume that the author is playing it safe and not coming out of her comfort zone where other things can be taken into count. Sometimes there is a need to venture outside of the box and think beyond it, otherwise with all the other books in the genre, it is hard to compete. Overall this book is an all-out romance book, I hope if it is your cup of tea you may enjoy it. Otherwise for me it was just, not for me. Wait there is a sequel coming for this book (I just squealed no!!!), I don't know what else is there to talk about, those who like the first book can read the second one too.

This Piece of My Soul, Tampa Suns Hockey (Clearing the Ice #2) by Robyn M. Ryan THIS PIECE OF MY SOUL is the continuation of Andrew and Caryn Chadwick’s story.  The novel starts out with the couple getting ready to go on vacation to celebrate their second anniversary.  Unexpectedly, Andrew gets a lucrative offer to sign with the Tampa Suns, where they relocate from St. Louis.  Andrew suffers a life-threatening injury that puts the couple’s marriage through some major tests.

The plot was very compelling and emotional.  The couple truly loves one another.  They are a good team.  They didn’t want to hurt each other, but continually seemed to do so.  They were put in a difficult situation with a lot of obstacles.  My heart went out to both characters.  Prior to the accident, things were going well for them.  They are deeply in love, and they would do anything for each other.  It was interesting to see how they reacted to things differently, like the accident.

Andrews physical therapist, Kristen Turner, caused some tension within the story.  She was a manipulative character.   Add in the strain from Caryn’s parents and the couple has unneeded extra stress to their situation.

Andrew and Caryn make some wonderful new friends from the Tampa Suns.  I love Kelly and John Peterson.  I love all the support from Andrew’s brother, Tom.  I think it is great that he temporarily relocates to help the couple out.  I love that Dr. Forster mentors him.  I also appreciate, Lauren’s friendship with Caryn.  She alleviates a lot of stress for Caryn.

I read a lot of sport fiction.  I appreciated the look down the road to recovery for an athlete and how long the process can be.  Recognizing the pressures, it puts on the athlete and family.

I really enjoyed THIS PIECE OF MY SOUL.  It was an emotional look at how quickly things can change.  It is a story about love and perseverance.  I did feel the story occasionally dragged, which is why I am giving 4.5 verses five stars.  However, I really enjoyed the story, and recommend the read.  I like how the story ended. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.  I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

A good story

Sadly, many relationships end in divorce. This story is different. It is about a marriage meant to last. Carryn was the only child of a business tycoon. Andrew was a professional hockey player. He literally ran into her on campus. Their attraction for each other was immediate. They experienced a wonderful love, despite his fans, his obsessive ex, her being groped when working in a bar or the long distances between them and frightening plane flights to visit him. Her father bitterly opposed their relationship because he was grooming her to take over his businesses. This drove her to become intimate with Andrew, despite his strong self-control beforehand with her. Her father cut her off, selling her home. Her hockey star secretly bought it back for her. He was bought by a different team, as predicted by her dad, (could he have manipulated that?), forcing him to leave her, travelling 10 months of the year. Despite that, their relationship grew even stronger. Her father thought he was not educated enough for her, and that he would soon lose his professional sports status and be unable to support her in the manner she was accustomed to. He proposed very romantically. I felt a bit disappointed that the end was rushed. Its a pity, after taking readers in such detail right through the story, to terminate it without answering the concerns her father raised, but suddenly ending the fued between her father and her, with no valid reasons for the softening of his attitude.
However I really enjoyed this story.

I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and thought that it was an enjoyable read. I liked that the story focused on Caryn and Andrew’s relationship, but was able to bring in secondary characters and include some of their daily life activities. It made the story seem more realistic.

Throughout the book, there is a lot of growth of character for Caryn. She has grown up sheltered and readily obeying her parents, even when she had a different opinion. As the year progresses and she grows in her relationship with Andrew, who is very supportive, Caryn begins to discover new things about herself. She has her moments when she struggles and reverts to her old ways, but quickly overcomes her struggles and moves forward.

I enjoyed the secondary characters in this book, especially Lauren and Tom. Lauren is a good friend who is concerned for Caryn when she struggles and is sensitive to her feelings. Lauren and Tom are both very encouraging characters who are supportive and allow the main characters to make their own decisions. In addition, I liked the glimpses we got of Tom’s character. He seems close with his brother and has that caring demeanor that suggests he would be good at his job.

3.5*

This Piece of My Heart is a sweet debut novel. Caryn's father has her life all mapped out for her, but she has plans of her own for the summer. When she literally runs into Andrew at the start of summer, all plans are thrown to the side as she and Andrew find themselves falling in love.
This is the story of Caryn learning to live life on her own terms, navigating love with a professional sports player, and finally standing up for herself with her father.

I enjoyed following along as Caryn and Andrew fell in love. Andrew is very sweet and patient with her, he's kind and caring, and very protective.
It was great to see Caryn take a stand against her parents, to stand up for who and what she wanted.
I was happy with the way their story played out-Caryn grew a lot in the span of the book, and I really like seeing characters develop like that. I'll be interested to see what the future holds for this couple.

3'5 STARS!

Caryn has all her life planned out by her father: college, graduation and then leading her dad’s multi-million dollar business. But that's not her dream. Then she runs into Andrew, a handsome hockey player and they fall in love.
This is the story of how Caryn stands up against her father's wishes to live her life and be with the man she loves.

This book is fun, easy, quick to read and so well written! The romance between the protagonist is so sweeeet! I really loved Andrew, he was so cute and sweet with Caryn!

The only thing I didn't like about this book was the insta-love kind of thing, becoming a couple so early. I enjoy a slow burn romance more. But that's a presonal preference.

I recommend this book if you are looking for a lovely romance and an easy read with a great heroine standing up for what she wants and a lovely hero.

This was a clean sport romance with more focus on the girl and defining herself and her
career choices.
It is about Caryn who is the only child of a power couple and is set to take over at her father's multi-billion dollar company when he retires.
To say that these people are helocopter parents is an understatement. Caryn insisted that she have her university education away from the parents that reside in Ottawa. Of course the parents bought the townhouse in Toronto where she is trying to finish up her degree at that university. Caryn is struggling with some of the courses, thus she is taking a summer course to get a needed credit in order to keep on track with her schedule. Everyday she happens to see a hot guy jogging, but he doesn't seem to notice her until they happen to collide into each other.
Thus begins the slow romance between Andrew (who happens to be a professioanl hockey player) and Caryn. Of course her parents don't approve and she gets cut off financially.

I really enjoyed this book! For a fairly new author, she did a great job. It was very well written and edited.
I loved the story, as I'm a huge hockey fan. I would have read it all in one sitting, but the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs are going on and I had to watch my St. Louis Blues play last night. The book was so good they it kept distracting me from the match! Lol!
So needless to say...loved the story! It really was a nice read and I'd recommend it for anyone. I can't wait to read the next book (and any future books) in this series. Robyn has just earned herself a new loyal fan! Keep up the great work!!

This was a cute and sweet story. It took me a while to get into this story and finish it as it moved rather slowly for my taste. Andrew (Drew) and Caryn met when he literally ran into her. When they went on a date, you can see the way the feelings between them started to come alive. This story was a bit slow for me as the author took the time to let the relationship developed over a longer period of time that I am used to reading. There were some conflicts with Andrew’s ex and Caryn’s father but I was happy with the resolution. A good but slow read. Story and characters are well developed and nicely done. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, so I could give an honest review.

Robyn is a new writer and I was asked to review the book for her. I enjoyed it. First, she has done an excellent editing job and the reading was smooth and easy. Then the book itself is a fun read. I enjoyed the side story line of hockey, I knew very little about it and found it interesting. The romance is sweet and has a good build and a good pop. The background of Canada was enjoyable and the complications of both of the character's background was well written. I will go ahead and pay full price for the book when it comes out and I will put up a flag to notify me of her next work.
I suggest the book and think you will enjoy it for a nice relaxing weekend read...francy Dickinson

Quite interesting read.

It is based on a typical scenario of rich daughter , whose live is planned by her father, falling in love with someone who is not approved by her father. She goes all the way to prove her capabilities, to show her father that she can take care of herself and make her own world based on her own decisions.

Caryn meets Andrew when they literally run into one another. The attraction is immediate, and mutual. Until he finds out about her dislike of athletes and that she is young & still in school.

Andrew wants no more of the party days that are behind him. Caryn represents the future and all he could have, if they can just find that common ground that seems so elusive. Can he show her they have a shot?

I really enjoyed this book. I found the characters and plot interesting and at a good pace. So glad there is more to this series, since this is a great start to another hockey series to sit on my shelf for a re-read.

Caryn and Andrew met when Caryn literally ran into Andrew. Caryn, a college student, and no idea that Andrew was a professional hockey player. I loved watching them fall in love. They sure didn't have it easy, with Caryn's very controlling father, Andrew going to a different hockey team in a different country, and Caryn being dedicated to graduating college. I can not wait for the next book to find out if Caryn and Andrew will get their HEA. Thsnk you so much, Robyn Ryan, for such a wonderful book!

This book is well written and a good heart warming book. Caryn father has had her planned out for her. She is to go to college and than head up her father multi million dollar business. But what happens when she meets hot hockey player Andrew??? Well let's say he is not in her fathers plan and she may loose everything.

Like I said a good, quick and easy read. Why 3 stars ? I'm not a fan in insta love and would like more of an alpha male.

Thank you new adult book club

I flove sport romances, espevially about hockey players, and I'm really glad I discovered Robyn Ryan's new series.

This Piece of my Heart was full with likeable characters, the story felt real and believable, Caryn's and Andrew's relationship was sweet and sexy.

I loved how Caryn's character developed and she learned to be herself despite her father's strong will.

Andrew is a swoonworthy, hot hero, he was really sweet and caring with his girl, and they made a cute couple.

I liked these characters and I'm curious about what happens in their world in the next book.

It was a bit of a slow start for me but once you get into the story it picks up and was quite good. It was well written and a quick read. I enjoyed the characters in the story. I liked the balance between the romance and the life of a pro-athlete. I liked that it was about a hockey player since this is a sport I have started to get into. I enjoyed it and can't wait for the next one to be released and to read future books from this author.

Caryn wanted to make her life mean something more than being the one to take over her dad's business. She was not looking to find love but love did want her. She encounters the last man in the world that her parents would approve of for their daughter. Andrew was nothing more than a hockey player. He was not good enough for Caryn, but she was falling and hard. There romance was something that changed both their lives. I was loving these two interactions and build of their relationship.

I found the writing to be engaging and interactive.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Incredible story, it's well written and engrossing with complex characters and an interesting storyline. I was left disappointed at the end though. The story doesn't wrap up at the end, it leaves you hanging. It's a great story worth reading, but unless you don't care if there's a HEA ending, wait until the story is complete before you read it.

This Piece of My Heart (Clearing the Ice Book 1)

Priceless, Drama, Passionate, Dreams all of these words make up this story! Unbelievable love story with up and downs, challenging for each other's passion. Amazing to say, I really enjoyed reading this authors book. This is apart of a series, so beware, but you won't, regret not reading it!!!!! Awesome love story between all of them. ENJOY

A college student being groomed to lead her father's company literally runs into a guy and he changes her world. Problem is, Daddy dearest is used to being in control and doesn't take her change of heart lying down. The guy turns out to be a hockey player with some following, and as they get farther into their relationship things affect his career. I believe Daddy dearest may have something to do with them.
