1312, A knight destined to rule… Jareth Tremaine, the first Duke of Dover, has seen how he’s remembered in history books—either a saint who rules his lands with justice or a religious extremist whose harsh treatment of the church nearly has him executed. But what history doesn’t disclose is that he’s essential to the world’s survival. After being wounded by ancient Huns using 21st century weapons, a girl is brought to aid his recovery—a girl who would become his duchess and the key to the future of Dover’s Amalgam. A 21st century girl whose future has not been written… Elizabet Blackwell isn’t surprised by wormholes. What shocks her is the multi-faceted personality of the titled knight. Sir Jareth is a nobleman, translator, surgeon—and he’s intent on locating and protecting a host. The host, she discovers, is a boy who practically lives in her backyard 700 years into Jareth’s future. The re-scripting of history for the survival of nature’s attack on mankind… Together they embark on their life’s journey and discover that they must protect each other even as they prepare the host for his destiny. Their quest must be to ensure the boy is secure and hidden from the evil forces who seek to exploit the power he contains.
Elizabetta lives in South Louisiana with her children, and dog, Duchess. When she is not in her writing room creating more stories that surround Dover Castle, she is working nights as a nurse. Mother to 5. Marmee to 2. Her favorite things in life are writing, reading, theatre, traveling, and spending time with her family. She believes the best thing about becoming a published author is hearing from readers who love her stories that all start with a medieval duke and a modern girl. Welcome to the age of Dover's Amalgam!
Recently I've read quite a few time travel stories that had a little of the same storyline. And I must say that The Guardian definitely belongs to the few I've liked the most.
I wish some things in this book had been explained a little better and I also would've loved some more information or backstory when the characters were initially introduced.
I did love the characters, though. Especially the two main characters, Elizabet and Jareth. Together they had quite some chemistry and I really loved their bickering. It was so entertaining! Jareth could be a big jerk but for some reason I can forgive him for it because it was charming in a way.
Like I said, some things I wished were explained a little more like the whole host and guardian thing. but then again, I thought the writing was very good, so it wasn't a main problem for me.
Overall, The Guardian by Elizabetta Holcomb was a good read. It reminded me a bit of Outlander, so I think fans of that book (and tv show) would like it a lot. Just like I did.
Loved this book. The beginning was a little slow, but I'm glad I stuck with it because this book is fabulous! The story and characters continue to build and get bigger and bigger like a storm that you become completely lost in. It's a time travel piece that jumps from multiple time periods and yet is written so well that I never felt lost or confused. You will love Jareth and be amused by Elizabet. The Duchess of Dover is just a young girl from the future that quickly becomes caught in a fairy tale that demands she become a lioness to protect what is meant to be. The Duke of Dover is the Guardian to it all. A bastard son, hero, protector, and guardian of the amalgam. A great beginning to a series that I cannot wait to continue. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the unfolding stories of each host, Jeremy and each of the Tremaine children. Actually, I CANNOT wait to read the rest! Elizabetta Holcomb, I want the next book ASAP!
Have you seen the movie Timeline? It's the one with the late Paul Walker in it. This book reminds me of that movie and to some extent, while I was reading it, I was visualizing the setting of the book as the locations in that movie. I didn't expect it to be a time-traveling plot. I actually thought it was a period book. Who does not love a good old time traveling story? However, in this case, it's not the present who holds the time traveling capability and that's something I rarely see in a book.
I'm writing this less than 24 hours after I read the review copy and everything is still fresh on my mind - yep, including a big big pile of feels - I feel like I'm going to explode. Note to self: don't write a review right after you read a book. I'm trying not to spoil anything but I really want to share how awesome this book made me feel. I was smiling like an idiot, reading in a corner of a coffee shop yesterday.
I am not a fan of romance novels. I consciously avoid reading that genre. But boy oh boy, how I love it when it is part of a story where romance is actually not it's primary theme. I felt like I love my boyfriend more after I read the book. I was smiling the whole day while I silently go back to the scenes I read from the book. It just sticks to you. Now it sounds like I'm talking about a romantic comedy book. I'm blabbing. This review is not going as I planned.
For a book that is part of a series, especially that this is the first book, not much was explained. I expected it to be like the foundation of the whole series and an introduction of the characters but it was not. You kind of know the characters as you go along the book. Still, there are a few major characters in the book mentioned but their background was barely touched. Almost the entire book is a cliffhanger for me. I understand that since this is only book 1, we have plenty of time for character introductions. When will the next book be out? Urgh! Series. Why do authors enjoy tormenting us like this? It's been a while since I read a series. Exactly because I was avoiding to feel like this. The anticipation, the waiting. I want the next book ASAP. Now!
It is an easy read with less than 300 pages. Every chapter in the book is action-packed and fast-paced. It was exhilarating and tiring, in a good way. Although the story jumps from on time period to another, it is not confusing. On the other hand, the last chapters felt a little bit rushed for me. That part I got confused. I had to go back a few pages to grasp the transition. It felt like there should be at least a chapter of two before it got to those final chapters. But other than that, I enjoyed experiencing this new world and I definitely want to be there again.
I am recommending this book to all readers who are into time-travelling and/or period fantasy. I am recommending this to everyone. This book comes out on March 21, 2016.
I picked up this book because of one single reason. The blurb of the book got me curious about the time travel cause and effect in this book. We have all, by now, read at least one time travel book – and quite a few in my case – and in each case the blurb actually clarifies which character is time traveling but that is not the case this time around. So obviously I had to find out for myself.
Unlike my usual reviewing format, I will not summarize the plot as I am afraid I may give up spoilers with regards to the plot if I try. So I will get straight on to the characters… Elizabet Blackwell is a character that I liked quite a bit. She is brave and understanding with a good deal of wit about her – even though there were moments where her immaturity slipped through. Her flaws made her more real to me. It was easy to like her for the person she eventually grows out to be. Jareth was loveable, brave and even inspirational. The contrasting personalities of Elizabet and Jareth make for an interesting read. Whenever these two were together, things always took an interesting turn and their chemistry was indeed a strong point of this book.
The author has done an admirable job of world building in the beginning. However, it lost the rhythm and there were quite a few points where I wanted to know more. The plot of the book was not as complex as I expect from a time travel novel and was very much predictable towards the end. Irrespective of the predictability, the book did not have a dull moment with its fast pace and quite a few adventures.
This was quite a debut novel. The author shows promise with her language, narrative and characters.
It's seriously hard to believe that this book is the author's debut novel, beacuse it's just sooooo freaking good. It gripped me from the very first page, and it was a pleasure to read such a wonderful work. Being completely honest, I haven't read many books about time travelling, mainly due to my lack of interest in this topic, but I am glad I got the opportunity to read The Guardian, and embark on this exhilarating journey. The characters are sharply drawn, each one is unique in their own way, and they make you feel a deep sense of familiarity almost in the beginning, and that my friends, is one of the marvellous things about this book. I highly recommend this novel to history nerds and time travel lovers (and also people like me who love to obsess over excellent style of narration) to pick this work of art by Ms Elizabetta Holcomb and discover a plethora of awesomeness that will not disappoint.
I found this book an enjoyable read; and at under 300 pages long, a quick read also. The time travel aspect has a twist to create a unique point and I really liked the relationship between the two protagonists, in particular its unconventional aspect. I look forward to seeing the relationship in greater detail later in the series. Overall I thought the book well written; however would like more in depth descriptions of the host aspect and character origins. These points would hopefully be addressed in later books. In short, an alternative young adult book that I will be recommending.
I enjoyed the story very much. I read the author's book, The Heir, first, so I already knew a lot about the background of the story. The plot was well planned and executed, the characters were engaging and the dialogue entertaining, but please, fix this: don't use the word progeny in place of the word I'm sure you meant: prodigy. There's huge difference. Jareth (and others), said of himself that he was a child progeny! Progeny is: a descendant of a person, offspring. A Prodigy is: a person, especially a young one, endowed with exceptional qualities or abilities, which has to be the word you wanted. One use of progeny would have been a typo, but three times meant not knowing the definition, as far as I can tell. Great story otherwise.
Elizabet Blackwell, a modern-day women, found herself tending to a knight's wounds who also happened to be the Duke of Dover. Jareth, hurt by a 21st century weapon while battling ancient warriors of 1312, was a nobleman destined for greater title.
When the past met the present, things were bound to happen, history may repeat itself, but for everyone's sake, history must be rewritten. As they time traveled between worlds, Elizabet and Jareth must join forces to protect what the future holds.
Elizabet was quite a character. Snarky, feisty, brave and open-minded. She had the guts to question the future Duke of Dover, a feat most people were afraid to do. Jareth was also something else. He was smart, funny, and could be really annoying too. Their social interactions were quite hilarious sometimes, which made them more adorable.
This was quite an interesting read. I've always liked time travel stories and so far, The Guardian proved to be entertaining and action-filled and unique. I loved how the story progressed but also had me guessing until the end. Only to get dumbfounded with the cliffhanger. Ugh. I need to read what happens next! Seriously!
As this was my first book about time-travel, it was quite the challenge. Overall I enjoyed this book.
The writing style is in my opinion really thought trough. The characters were from different periods in time, which was noticeable in their speech. I really liked the distinction between how the characters spoke and the dialogues were awesome. Really well done. I want to add that I’m a huge fan of rhetorical devices in books, which I’ve seen in this book as well. “He wove a web with music that was tangible”, “They rode into the village with only the sounds of winter between them.”. On the other hand, it was for me, as English isn’t my first language, quite difficult language sometimes. Also, it would have been nice if, especially medieval Dover, was described more in detail, as well as some more background info on the characters.
Speaking of the characters, they were so loveable, I love how Elizabetta created chemistry between Elizabet and Jareth. “He was laughing – not loudly – barely audibly, really – and lazily watching her through his long, sooty black lashes. And then, one of those blue eyes winked.” Their personalities were well portrayed. I, however, was annoyed by the naivety of Elizabet at some parts in the story.
The plot was really intriguing, a lot of things happened in those 249 pages. Sometimes I couldn’t keep up with everything and wished the elements of time-travel would be explained more in depth.
If you like a fast-paced book, and time travel related books, I’d definitely recommend it to you.
I was sent this book by Elizabetta Holcomb herself in exchange for an honest review and here it is!
I gave this book 3.5 stars! I liked this story quite a lot, but there were some things that just didn’t sit well with me. Let’s start with the good stuff: the characters, the romance, the slang. I really liked the interactions going on between all the characters. The dialogue was spot on! Most of the dialogue was actually super hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud A LOT. Slang was a big part of why the dialogue was funny, and to get that you have to read it. The romance was so great, too! I felt like for a good amount of the book, I was only into it because of Elizabet and Jareth. They are so different, but work so well as a couple. Sometimes they would just be talking to each other for many pages and I didn't mind one bit. Now the stuff that I was “eh” about: the actual plot and the world building. I thought that the plot of the book was very confusing. There were things that were kind of just stated, but not elaborated on. Then there’s the actual time travel. I’m not very sure on how the “wormholes” work or how the time jumping effects the future. This was my first time travel based book that I’ve ever read and maybe that’s why, but I’m sure certain things could have been explained a bit more. I know I’m going to keep reading this series because I seriously love Elizabet and Jareth. I live for them in this series!
This book was absolutely amazing! I was not really getting into it until +/- page 70.The beginning was a bit slow-paced, but I am very glad that I read on, as the story became better and better the more you have read. I loved the writing style of the book, the language used was advanced, yet understandable. I was never confused about what was happening while reading this book! Besides the writing itself, the storyline was impressive too! The character development of Jareth and Elizabet was amazing and I thought them to be very relatable. The scene description was fantastic too, everything was described in great detail, which made it easy to imagine what was happening. I also loved how the story took place in different time periods. Definitely oneof the best books I have read this year, highly recommend this book!
This book was amazing. The beginning was a bit slow, but when you read past page 50, you just can't stop. I loved how well written this book was. Everything is so well described, I even felt like I was there with Elizabet and Jareth through everything. This book got me in my awe-mod, so now I'm just sitting on my couch and smiling like crazy. I recommend this book to everyone. Good work Elizabetta. This book is just awesome.
This was an interesting read but I'll admit it wasn't really for me. I found myself getting bored at certain parts and the story dragged on. I like the idea of the time travel but I didn't enjoy all the time spent in medieval England. I like the idea of the characters being from different times but I can't see how they never thought they would change time with all the jumping.
This book was interesting for me. I'm not an avid reader of time travel novels, but this one was good. I found it a bit challenging to piece together their story at first, but as the book continued on, I wanted to know more and more. It's a pity it wasn't longer and that the next two books don't seem to center on Jareth and Elizabet. Poor Elizabet is thrown into a situation she is only marginally prepared for, with a man who is a bit pf a perfectionist in his work. Luckily for her she seems to be a sci-fi fan so the concept of wormholes and time jumping doesn't phase her as much as it might someone else. As the story develops it is clear that Jareth's near death experience that Elizabet helped him with has drawn them closer together, allowing their relationship to progress at an alarmingly fast rate. (Granted they both know they end up together, so why wait?)
I found parts of this a bit contrived, they did get together quickly, and there was a bit of dystopian-ness about the book that threw me off a bit (I don't normally read or like that type of story). Also I do have one major issue with the book, and that is the author naming the main character after herself...Elizabet, Elizabeth, and Elizabetta are all forms of the same name. While all pretty, it's off putting for me when the author seems to insert herself/himself as the heroine/hero. Luckily I hadn't made that connection until after I was invested in the story.
Regardless of the issues I had with the book, I wanted it to be longer. I wanted to know more about their life and how things circle around to the events that happen later to effect the ones in the book. I might try to get my hands on the other books in hope that more of Elizabet & Jareth's story is told in them. If you like clean time travel novels, this is definitely for you.
Note: I received a free copy of this book though Goodreads Giveaways
I will be honest: it is rare that I read a book so beautifully written! The style of this book is unique and wonderful! Each sentence is beautiful and to be slowly savored as such.
Both the hero and the heroine are strong, and yet the heroine doesn't fall into the tropes I've seen in some YA novels. This author clearly understands the difference between "being mean" and "being strong." The character, Elisabet, wasn't turned into a complete psychopath just to seem strong. She doesn't have the manly traits forced upon some YA female characters either, which is something I am thankful for. A female character can be strong without channeling men. Elizabet is feminine, kind, sarcastic, and strong.
The only negative thing I will say about this novel is that it is mostly telling and hardly any showing. I used to be a non-reader, so it can be difficult for me to keep my attention on a book sometimes, so this might not affect other readers the way it affected me. A few plot twists are revealed a bit too early through the means of "telling." There were a few times when I wasn't sure what the motives of the characters were or what was at stake. A few things weren't explained, such as Elizabeth's inability to read. I think this was all because of the telling in the story.
I know this book is YA, but it reads more like an adult historical fiction than YA. So anyone who likes both should definitely try this book! I know many readers are deterred by the term YA, so do not let it scare you away. If you prefer adult fiction, this book is perfect for you. Also the characters are both mature and smart.
*happy sigh* This was beautifully written, really. Read this book if you enjoy strong, nice prose! It really shows the author put a lot of effort into this book. The entire style is carefully developed to match Jareth's time period.
I was sent an ARC by Elizabetta Holcomb in return to write an honest review.
First thing I want to say is that I would love to read the sequel!
Characters were lovable and felt real. I liked Jareth and Elizabet. They had a great connection. I liked Gabriel and Minh and all their constant bickering. It was very entertaining.
Jareth was very smart and skillful with anything and everything. He was handsome and confident. Basically he was everything a girl wants, except maybe his charming personality. Yes, he was charming when he wanted to be, but he also knew how to insult someone even though he didn't really want to. He said some hurtful things to Elizabet at the beginning of the book, but to be honest, she wasn't really nice to him either.
Elizabet was loyal and brave. She would do anything for the people she loved. I felt sorry for her when we got to know her, her story. When she was speaking about her secret, I immediately thought the worst and literally started laughing when I finally found out what her secret was. But to think of it now, it must have been very hard for her...
A phenomenal debut! Interesting flawed characters and a setting that's just so beautifully described that I felt a part of the story. After falling in love with Outlander last year, I didn't think a historical time travel would ever add up to it - but this one comes mighty close.
Everything in this story felt so authentic, and I really fell in love with Holcomb's style of writing right away. She's so careful in how she tells the story, you can tell that she thought off of the plots through to a point of almost perfection. It all seemed to line up really well. Elizabet very quickly became my favorite character - she reminded me a lot of myself. She's very loyal, and would literally do anything for those that she loves. It was very hard to watch her story unfold, and I found myself upset for her when her secret came out, even though today it wouldn't have been such a big deal.
It did take a little time at the beginning to get a feel for this world that Holcomb created - to understand the rules she used for her characters to be able to time travel, but once I got a feel for that, I was golden. I truly enjoyed the story, and would recommend to many of my friends that also love these kinds of books.
The Guardian follows Jareth Tremaine a duke, and his duchess Elizabet Blackwell, through the pleasant journey of meeting, the tragedy of war, and the adventures of time travel. This noble couple meet when Jareth is wounded, and Elizabet is there to heal him. Jareth is a very important man in present day; as well as, significantly needed in the past. He’s the leader of the Amalgam, a powerful group of people with amazing talents, and he is also their protector; therefore, he must be protected at all costs.
This book was good, but I found it hard to stay focused on the story. It was full of action, and time travel, making it exciting; unfortunately; this also caused me a bit of confusion. It had so much going on all the time; it became too much, causing the need for breaks in my reading. To some readers; the more going on the better, but in this case, it made it too hard for me to stay focused while reading The Guardian. The book was written well, and had a great storyline; however, it lacked the organization necessary to keep my attention....Stormi
I liked the story and the whole concept. I’m a sucker for Historical Romance I mean, to actually read about a character from the past and imagining it come to life with a story and twists in the road. It’s like a behind-the-scenes of a history book. What I liked about how Holcomb is that she gave me that, she gave me the never before seen behind-the-scenes with bloopers and extras and more and I love it. Okay, I keep saying I love it over and over again because I do.
With the first few pages, it’s was slow for me and a bit confusing because I didn’t get a clear grasp on what era where they’re at and what’s happening but as the story progresses, the characters give light to the events especially when Elizabet was talking and rambling and basically just making things enjoyable for me. Which means she’s my favorite character. Elizabet was introduced as a person who’s a bit tough and punk-ish attitude but deep inside, she’s a wreck. Love it.
I recommend this to people who loves historical fiction. Srsly. Go read it.
Welcome to 1312 where you will meet Jareth, a knight destined to rule. When you do meet him he is in a bad situation and Elizabet is brought in to help him. This is there journey as the learn to love and protect each other in the world of time travel.
The characters in this book are intriguing. It was such a wild ride to read a story that encompasses from 1312 to the 21st century. It was a wild ride at times. There is plenty of adventure and action in the story that keeps it interesting. With the introduction of each characters it leads to more questions of what the future holds.
The only thing for me was that when I first started to read this story I felt lost in the beginning but as the chapters went by I began to understand it. There is many things going on so it is a story that you need to pay close attention to. Sometimes I had to backtrack a little to figure some thing out.
I received a gift copy in exchange for an honest review. Read and reviewed for Kylie's Fiction Addiction.
Such a good book! I loved it, so much, and it was such an easy read. This book had an interesting plot and likable characters. What I enjoyed the most, was the writing style. Elizabetta Holcomb did her first book really well after my opinion. The characters did have personalities that I liked very well. Every character got their own personality traits, and were relatable. The only bad thing was the rush of everything, especially between Jareth and Elizabet. It was sometimes hard to understand what was going on, because everything was so rushed. The guardian thing and the host could also have been explained better. Another bad thing was the slow start, but most series start slow. There is nothing else to say about this book, except that I really enjoyed it. A wonderful book with an interesting plot about time traveling and love. Looking forward to reading the sequel, because I absolutely will.
This book was great! Action, adventure, mystery, and romance; all in under 300 pages. While the story started off a bit slow, it didn't take long for me to fall into the rythm of the story. The characters interactions were by far my favorite part. As a reader who is usually annoyed by banter between lover interests, I actually enjoyed Elizabet and Jareth's back and forth. The unique time travel element was refreshing. The characters took advantage of this ability, and were able to freely interact with characters from other time periods, which I don't see often in books involving time travel. The only aspect I didn't enjoy was that the romance moved a little fast. However, the quickness of the romance made sense. never did it feel like the author was rushing it just to get to the hot make out scenes. The Guardian is an eloquently written adventure with time travel and wonderful characters. I enjoyed every minute of it.
I received this book as an ARC to review. So, finally after almost a month I finished it! I give this book a 3.5/5 stars. I really enjoyed this book, the concept was amazing, it was something that I have never read before. The characters were awesome (even if at times I would have likely killed the heroine) but underdeveloped. I wish I could have read more about them, about their thoughts. The beginning is rather slow, but you have to get through those initial chapters to really enjoy the story. We get to know the important things in different parts, so that they're not revealed all together and I loved it, even if it was a bit frustrating not knowing what was really going to happen. Again, just like the characters, the concept of the guardian, of the host and the wormholes could have been developed better than they were, but that was fine anyway. So, in the end, I really enjoyed this read!
I enjoyed this book. It seems like it will be a simple period piece, from glancing at the cover, but it is much more involved than that. It includes a combination of modern day life with a large portion of medieval life, and plenty of new adventures an experiences in between.
If you are looking for a simple read, this may not exactly fit the bill. However, if you are a fan of the idea of a Duke with the capability to travel to different eras of time, and the fact he's able to retrieve his bride to be, but still hits lots of twists and turns along the way...give this book a try.
The writing is good, the experiences shared here are elaborate, and the main characters (Jareth & Elizabet) are just bubbling with chemistry and able to mesh together seamlessly when it comes to protecting those that they love. I received a copy of this book for free and wanted to share my review of it here.
I was honored to received this for free to get an honest review and to be truthful, this one was difficult and it took me a few chapters to really get into but I’m glad I didn’t stop reading. Once I got into it, I could stop turning the pages so to speak. It has everything a good story should have: humor, action and adventure, romance, time travel, and a great hero and heroine whose chemistry melds together so perfectly. The writing itself is so incredibly pieced together; at times so detailed, I could picture the scenes crystal clear. If you find yourself not getting into it, please STICK WITH IT! It was worth it!
Quick reading. Interesting characters. One of these books that you want to hurry and finish to see what happens next. Yet do not want the book to end. The author is a wonderful story teller that knows how to keep your interest. Her book is like a hurricane building in the gulf. You never know how it will turn out until it is finished. Looking forward to more books and to learn more about the people and places. The authors description of the places, time and people involved are so realistic you feel that you are there. Looking forward to more books from this new author.
Timetravel, mevieval times, knights and romance. These are all elements that I love in books, and this one had them all. It was also funny and it had an original concept. This was something i've never read before. However, I'm not a fan of instalove. I also didn't connect with any of the characters, like Jareth. Yes, he could be tender but he also went mad when people didn't do as he said. I just disliked him immensely. Overall this was a good book though. It's worth your time. I would recommend this to people who love timetravel but not to people who can't stand cliches.
I saw this book on Instagram and became curious. The author generously sent me and ARC and I dove right in. I loved it. It felt unique and I absolutely love that not everyone in this novel is perfect. She uses characters with, what society deems, disabilities and she turns them into something amazing. Time travel, romance, drama there is so much potential. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I thought it was a phenomenal premier novel.
I could not finish it, sadly. The beginning did not pick up fast enough for me, and I just wasn't able to follow what was going on. The time-traveling threw me off quite a bit too. However, I loved the writing style and I look forward to seeing Ms. Holcomb's future work.
Reading this book was like reading history. It showed me the greatness of surviving war and creating peace. I find this book very interesting with the time travel concept, it provided me a journey to the possibilities of life.
