Silent was Zarathustra

Rate this book
The much awaited sequel to the two successful Kabul Disco books
Nicolas Wild travels to Iran at the invitation of his friend Sophia, daughter of the well-known humanist Cyrus Yazdani, who had been assassinated in mysterious circumstances. Here, Wild discovers Zoroastrianism, one of the world's first monotheistic religions and an inspiration to numerous philosophers, among them Nietzsche. As he meets and talks to people in Iran, Wild becomes immersed in Cyrus's story. With Sophia's permission, he goes to Geneva to hear the testimonies of the assassination trial at the Criminal Court. Inspired by the life of a real-life activist, Wild's account reveals more than the story of one man's life or a court case. With characteristic humour - both unprejudiced and warm - he portrays a complex picture of a people and a culture.

This is an epic graphic novel. It’s quite a novel and elaborate in its storyline.

Cyrus Yezdani - a humanist - is killed by one of his closest friends Mehrab in Iran. The novel looks to investigate the crime. The ‘detective’ or chronicler of the story is a comic book artist.

The storyline revolves around Parsis and Zoroastrianism. Being a minority community they were targeted in most countries and were almost wiped out. They have contributed immensely to India - some of the largest conglomerates was built by this community.

It is well visualized and rendered. The book throws light on the living conditions in Iran and gives perspective on why happen the way they do in the country. Some of the panels are so well done that they don’t have any word blurbs but convey character’s thoughts by images.

The author has used his time in the country very well to build out this story.

You have my explicit, blanket permission to read anything by Nicolas Wild. He is wry and funny and reports on politics beautifully.

Read this one specially for the way it speaks of the Zoroastrian religion.

Wild, you have my heart.

"Iyi düşünce, iyi söz, iyi eylem." Zerdüştlüğün tarihine giriş niteliğinde, özellikle İran ekseninden bakan, sağlam içeriğe sahip, güzelce bir grafik roman.

Bouleversant...

This graphic novel is one of the most informative that I've ever read. It teaches us a lot about Zoroastrianism, Iran and acceptance.

Could help but tear up at some passages. As a French woman of Persian ethnicity, I could relate to a lot of the characters' emotions, especially that good old frustration.
I also learnt a lot about the Zoroastrian community in Paris. Cannot wait to do some research on the Yazdanis. Especially given that my name is Ava and that I am a singer as well ;)

Very informative and emotional, would recommend to anyone.

This is a book to pick up of you've always been curious about what the concept of Zoroastrianism is.
This is a book to read about a great humanist who wanted to get his religion back to its former glory, a religion that practices and preaches peace and has been a target for religious persecution for centuries.
This is a book to read if you want a small glimpse into Iran from the 2000s through a lot foreigner's eyes.

Probably 3.5 stars. A fascinating and insightful journey into Zoroastrianism. The book's style of narration reminded me of the graphic novel travelogues of Guy Delisle. When I picked up this book, I did not realise this was the 3rd part of the trilogy. Luckily the book can stand on its own and is not narratively dependant on the earlier books.

Surprisingly, Bombay, Bollywood and Aishwarya rai also make surprise appearances in it as also predictably the Parsis of Bombay. The book chronicles the life of Cyrus Yazdani - a humanist and Zoroastrian as also the parts of the Parsi/Zoroastrian diaspora across countries.

My primary and secondary education was at a Zoroastrian school, and my knowledge of the culture of the people and the history of the religion was very sparse. This book gave me some insight into the culture and the struggles of the Zoroastrian's in Iran and did so in a manner that wasn't boring or dull (which often times is the case on books tackling heavy topics like religion and culture of a community). I liked the art style and it was a fun and breezy read for me.

Silent Was Zarathustra delivers better than the other two books in the Kabul Disco series. Deeply personal and funny in parts, the book talks about a few important issues plaguing Zarathustrians in present day Iran.

The Zoroastrian religion is one of the most ancient monotheistic faiths and it probably influenced Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Its prophet was Zarathustra, who was born in what's now Iran sometime between 1500 and 600 BCE. In a time of crisis he meditated in the desert to find the meaning of life.

Nicolas, Paris'te tanıştığı Sofya'nın peşinden Tahran'a gider.

Being a graphic novel, it is a very easy read. But the topic is also quite interesting. The only frustrating thing is that after finishing, I felt like searching information on this particular case and have totally failed at finding anything!! For the first time google has let me down!
