This book does an excellent job of describing the thyroid and all that it controls in our body as well as the lab tests needed to diagnose thyroid problems. But despite struggling with Hashimotos and hypothyroid for a year, the diet/methodology in this book is overwhelming. If I had a personal chef, maybe, but trying to implement every single thing that is recommended in this book..., hormone replacement, a bazillion supplements, paleo diet, tracking carbohydrates, controlled exercise regiments, naps, stress reduction.... etc... is overwhelming.

I've read quite a few of books on Paleo, keto, & fasting lifestyles and how these assist in healing health issues. In comparison to other paleo/keto resources, this is not a strong book. For me, much better, richer and deeper knowledge resources are:
Dr Andreas Eenfeldt (his www.dietDoctor.Com website is top quality)
Gary Taubes
Nina Teicholz
Jimmy Moore
Dr Eric Westman
Dr Jason Fung
Dr Ken Berry
Dr Ted Naiman

With that said however, the information she provides specifically on thyroid issues is not as common of a topic and many of her suggestions are novel to me. I feel that her experience educated me 1) that there is no 'single experience' with thyroid and shouldn't be treated so simplistically, 2) the ways that thyroid issues should be identified via testing is more nuanced than usually offered (TSH only), and 3) the options for pharmaceutical management are more broad than usually offered. I feel more empowered with my questions now as I work with my practitioner.

In terms of paleo/keto lifestyle/nutritional support specifically for thyroid-healing, I prefer the books by Izabella Wentz-- as I feel she has more practitioner experience with many clients and is a better & more thorough resource. Therefore, while this book had some good tidbits for me, I feel better supported in lifestyle suggestions by other authors' works.

Oh and one last thing that is amusing. The author clearly loves her own physical image because she's plastered herself everywhere in the book. It's like a model shoot. Yes, she's extremely pretty, but the constant use of her own bikini-clad images lessens her credibility.

This is one of the most helpful books I've read since getting diagnosed with Hashimoto's -- it really helped me understand what different thyroid tests are looking for, what to ask for and how to measure thyroid health. It is a bit overly focused on the author's specific manifestations of thyroid disorder, at the expense of information on other issues (including autoimmune disorders). The interview at the end with Dr. Foresman filled in some of those gaps for me.

If you are told by your doctor that your thyroid tests are normal, your dosing is normal, and you still don't feel okay- read this book! Great information that I have not seen elsewhere.

This is the best book I've read on the subject of thyroid health. It isn't just a book about the paleo diet, it's a book that explains the thyroid hormones and why they are important. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has thyroid issues.

Visų pirma - knyga parašyta labai paprasta, paprastam žmogui suprantama kalba. Nėra jokio medicininio žargono, išsireiškimų ir prašmatnių pasisakymų. Knygą skaityti lengva ir malonu.

Visų antra - tai yra įkvepianti knyga. Man patiko autorės tiesmukumas ir 'nesukimas į vatą'.

‐-----------------------------------------------------
First of all - book was written in simple language that didn't have exhausting and difficult medical jargon. It was a pleasure to read.

Second of all - the book was inspiring. I loved authors direct and honest approach. You can see all the research she has compiled and presented through her own story. She teaches how to stand up and fight for better self.

Sometimes, to succeed - all we need is to come back to basics.

A book that is worth your attention and time.

I found this book on sale and have wanted to read it for quite a while.

The pros; The author goes into great detail about the thyroid itself, which was very interesting to read. I also like that she described the different thyroid issues and diseases (she even lists every symptom of each). I love the different tests you can request from your doctor also (I honestly didn't realize there were so many)!

The cons; for a book that is supposed to help with getting your mind and body healthy, there is a heavier (but indirectly implied, if this makes sense) emphasis on weight loss. Weight loss should be the last thing talked about (especially for people who struggle for years with hypothyroidism, misdiagnoses, dieting issues, etc). Weight loss will come eventually and I think the bigger picture should be on getting your body in better health to work up to losing weight. There are a lot pictures of her and she talks about how small she is which was off putting and really did make me feel self conscious. I also found it close-minded to say that hypoglycemia was due to consuming too many carbs and being a "sugar burner". I have had hypoglycemia for most of my life due to health issues I have, NOT because I'm a "sugar burner". I mean I get that paleo is a great way to eat for people with thyroid problems (I eat pretty paleo-ish myself), but the extremely strict ways of her paleo diet and long list of supplements are quite expensive. She also talks a lot about keto and a paleo-keto which was disappointing...I'm really not interested in a keto diet and bought this book thinking it was PALEO based. (Keto made me gravely ill and I was actually taken off of that diet by my physician).

I know the author did a ton of research for this book, and the chapters on the thyroid and tests were great! Unfortunately, I was just not feeling this one. I don't mean to be so harsh with my review, but I was pretty disappointed.

I learned a lot about my thyroid in this book; however, I dislike how the author seems to be OK with medication as part of the ultimate solution to thyroid issues. While I get using medication as a support to help the patient live their day-to-day lives while in recovery, I'm concerned that the author believes that continued use of T3 or desiccated thyroid is necessary. After reading this book, I do have a few action items to support my wonky thyroid, but I wish that I was left with more hope for fully recovering without the use of medication. The body has a 'natural desire' to heal itself. I don't believe that anyone should be on medication unless there is a structural defect within the body. /rant

This book excels at bringing a complex biological process into simple, understandable language with a patient-centered mindset. On several occasions, I’ve returned to the book with blood tests in hand to help me interpret the results.
The diet suggestions are a bit too idealistic and the lifestyle suggestions are rather over the top. However, if viewed in the spirit of getting better each day as opposed to a drastic shift in lifestyle, this book can provide a roadmap of ideas for incremental improvement.

Fascinating. Thanks to this book, I have two pages of questions for my dictor and a realization that I must find a new doctor who will address issues that previous doctors have ignored. It was great to read the detailed, numerous bits of info and discover that my experiences were not in my imagination but real. Thank you, Elle.

The best book I have come across on thyroid issues, with clear actions to try. Books that are written by sufferers who have had to figure out a way not just to survive, but thrive, whilst swimming upstream in an often skeptical and sometimes stuck in the past medical system are gold! Thank you Elle.

Refreshing and easy to digest information about thyroid issues and their common misdiagnosis, with practical advice regarding how to properly assess and manage thyroid function. Recommend for anyone having trouble with multiple hypothyroid symptoms while being told there is nothing wrong by their current physician.

Tur nekā jauna man autore nepastāstīja.

Vairogdziedzera testu un zāļu iztirzājums ir samērā plašs, bet nezinu, vai Latvijā piedāvā tādas analīzes un arī vai pielieto tādas zāles.

This is an ideal first place to start if you are just beginning to learn more about your thyroid. A lot of her information comes through stories and a lot of the other information comes through listicle style information sharing.

Interesting information about the thyroid and thyroid medication that is hard to find elsewhere, especially about T3. The middle section on Paleo seems pretty standard. The 60 page interview with Dr. Foresman at the back gives an fascinating insight into why so many people have trouble getting help from their own doctor.

I took this book with me to the Dr's Appointment...which was pretty useless. My Dr explained that she was an Allopath Dr and I would have to go to someone who would know how to interpret a T3/T4 blood test. An out-of-the-pocket Naturopath.

I still love this book. Going to try to reset hormones with a Ketogenic Diet and if that doesn't work will have to shell out the money for a Dr that can help.
