A shallow scuba dive off Cabo San Lucas leaves Alice Nguyen dead, on the eve of her wedding. A tragic accident? No, the autopsy shows her air tanks had been filled with carbon monoxide. Private detective Morelos is hired by her parents and sets out to learn how, and why, it happened. The dive operator turns out to be dirty, but he has legal and political protection. After Morelos is beaten up by the man’s protectors, he and his new partner Delgado get figure out how to threaten the protectors -- but their response is to beat the dive operator to death, before he can tell who hired him. The investigation starts over, and leads Morelos north to Seattle and a business run by the parents of the dead woman’s fiancée, and winds up in a standoff against local muscle who work for the fiancee’s parents, and surprising revelations about who killed Alice, and why. Nothing is what it seems to be, beneath the surface.
