atheling: ath-uh-ling - (a as in cat): an Anglo-Saxon word meaning prince or heir

Setting: Earth: 2047 AD. Earth is dying. Pitar Ellisen, a powerful politician, vies for global power, content at this point to command a dying world.

Plot: There are two parallel plots, overall. Earth's and that of Phrynis. The Earth thread spans all four books, and so is incomplete until the final volume. The Phrynis plots are complete in themselves, tracing the evolution of an alien species into transcendence.

The Earth segment: While Ellisen has the Hesikastor's visions checked out, Manfred Hengst, a ruthless magnate, moves to take control of both the Hesikastor and the path to Phrynis.

The Phrynis segment: As heir to the ancient, barbaric Gnangar throne, Prince Torc goes on a token retreat to the holy city of Rm. Because of his sexual gymnastics on the way there, Torc arrives late and to get another slot has to extend his stay. As a result of this prolonged retreat he evolves into an idealist utterly unsuited for the situation to which he returns.

The ensuing struggle between him and his barbaric brother mirrors the struggles within Ellisen as he wrestles with his own conscience and the fate of war-torn Earth.
