Welcome to the bestselling Last Frontier Lodge series – a sexy and steamy contemporary romance series set against the wilderness and beauty of small-town Alaska!
Becca Hamilton is a busy prosecutor who’s dedicated and passionate about her work. After being left high and dry days before her wedding several years ago, she promised herself she wouldn’t let her heart become vulnerable again. Yet, she didn’t count on temptation in the form of Aidan McNamara.
Aidan McNamara is many a woman’s dream—a tall, dark, sexy-as-hell military type who tends to save the day so often it’s annoying. He’s an ex-Navy SEAL and a close family friend. Becca has been quite successful at ignoring the spark that burns every time Aidan is near. Until he shows up and happens to save her evening. One scorching hot kiss on a rainy night, and Becca begins to question the limits she set for herself. She gambles she can allow herself just one night with Aidan.
Aidan has been half in love with Becca since the first time he laid eyes on her. He met her at a time when his life was one dangerous mission after another, so he couldn’t act on his desire. The years passed, and he watched Becca’s heart get broken and the walls go up around her. A chance encounter kindles hope in his heart. He can’t say no when she asks for one night, but he knows from the start he wants more.
Becca quickly discovers that ‘just once’ won’t even come close to satisfying her desire. She completely unprepared for the depth of feelings Aidan elicits. Forced to take a much-needed break from work, she decides a journey to Last Frontier Lodge in Alaska might give her some perspective and a long overdue adventure. A trip she hoped would clear her head only leaves her missing Aidan so much she can hardly stand it.
Aidan is a man of plans and action, but with Becca, he’s winging it every step of the way. When she takes off to Alaska, he finds himself following her even though it goes against his grain. Can Becca let down her guard long enough to let Aidan into her heart? Can Aidan convince her he’s worth more than just once?
*All novels in this series are full-length standalone novels with an HEA.
USA Today Bestselling Author J. H. Croix lives in a small town in the historical farmlands of Maine with her husband and two spoiled dogs. Croix writes steamy contemporary romance with strong independent women and rugged alpha men who aren't afraid to show some emotion. Her love for quirky small-towns and the characters that inhabit them shines through in her writing. Take a walk on the wild side of romance with her bestselling novels!
I liked the story, but I don't know why authors have to continually reiterate things through out the book. It's almost like they are afraid we won't remember what they said 2 times before. Is it because they are trying to make the book longer? I would rather have a shorter story then to bore the reader over & over. I fine many authors do this. Other than that complaint, I liked the story between Becca & Aiden.
Becca is 33 and works as a dedicated public prosecutor in Seattle. Aiden is 38 and owns his own highly successful security firm in Seattle. They first met at the home of Becca's parents when Becca was a 23-year-old law-school student. Aiden was immediately, intensely attracted to her, but he was 28 at the time and frequently out of the country deployed on top-secret missions as a Navy SEAL. He and Gage were also on the same team and were best friends, and there was no way he would institute a fling with Gage's younger sister, which was all he had the possibility of offering at that stage of his life. Aiden and Gage have continued to be close friends since they left the service, and Aiden and his younger sister have been practically adopted into the family by the Hamiltons, since their own parents are deceased. Over the years, both during his time in the military and afterwards, in civilian life, Becca has remained the only woman Aiden has ever met whom he could contemplate getting serious about. Unfortunately, at the point he could finally contemplate settling down, Becca was unavailable because she was involved with a man whom she ended up becoming engaged to. Then, three years ago, her fiance cheated on her and dumped her two days before their wedding. Ever since, Becca has refused to have anything to do with any man romantically. Until the night when she is driving from Seattle to Bellingham, where her parents live, and is forced off the road into a ditch during a torrential rainstorm in order to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming car in her lane. Aiden happens to be driving in the same direction at the same time of night, on his way to visit his younger sister, who also lives in Bellingham, and he is fortuitously on hand to rescue Becca. While they are sitting in Aiden's car waiting for members of his security team to come and watch over her car until a tow truck can retrieve it, Aiden succumbs to an irresistible impulse and kisses Becca, as he has longed to do all these years. He is over the moon with shock and delight when she enthusiastically responds to his embrace. And he is filled with a spark of hope about the possibility of finally having a chance to win her heart when she agrees to have dinner with him the following night.
During their date, Becca confides in Aiden that she has not been with anybody since her ex, and she does not like the thought of his being the last man she will ever have sex with, since she has every intention of remaining celibate the rest of her life to avoid ever being abandoned by a faithless partner again. She asks Aiden if he would be willing to be her lover for just one night, since he kissed her so passionately and seems attracted to her, and also because she likes and respects him, as well as being madly attracted to him as one of the most gorgeous men she's ever known. Aiden doesn't want to just spend one night with Becca, but he cannot resist her, and he says, yes.
Aiden is a wonderful MMC. He is my favorite part of this novel. He is a man of integrity, as well as being empathetic, generous and, of course, a fantastic lover. The entire romantic conflict is Becca's unwillingness to trust any man, including someone as wonderful as Aiden. This makes her basically a passive protagonist. She doesn't have any other real story goal other than resisting the irresistible Aiden.
Though both Becca and Aiden live in Seattle, when she has to stay away from her job as a prosecutor because of a violent offender who might be coming after her, she decides to take a long overdue vacation and go to visit her two brothers, who are living in Diamond Creek, Alaska. In keeping with the theme of this series, this allows most of the romantic action to occur at the Last Frontier Lodge.
This is not a slowburn novel, because of the setup described above. And, similar to all of the books in this series, there are a lot of sex scenes. Fortunately, they are not written in a crude manner.
The protagonists from the first two books in this series are significant subcharacters in this novel, and we fans of this series get to enjoy observing them living out their HEA.
There is nothing offensive about this novel - except the use of fiancée (female person) where it should have been fiancé (male person).
There is nothing very exciting about it either. The female main character, Becca, is attracted to Aidan, an ex-Navy SEAL who is perfect in every way, but won't give him a chance and will sleep with him 'just this once'. The reason? Her ex-fiancé cheated on her so she has sworn off men. Oh, why only once? She does not like the idea that her ex-fiancé is the last man she sleeps with if she kicks the bucket.
That's a pretty weak source of tension. You should expect a lot of introspection and doubt. I stopped reading already.
This was a quick and easy read. Becca is stranded one night and Aidan comes to her rescue. They kiss and they both enjoy it. They begin as just a quick fling. However, by the end it becomes so much more.
This was a heartbreaking and heartwarming story. Aidan has loved Becca for so long. Since that first meeting 10 years ago. He has held back so much, as Becca was broken. She had sworn off men due to her ex-fiancee. Becca was ok being alone until Aidan kissed her. He mind just wouldn't stop. She thinks of a plan to rid her if her ex and get one night with Aidan. Little did either know, it wouldn't be enough, well, Aidan knew. Becca needed to work out her head and heart. She knew what her heart wanted but just couldn't come to terms with it. Asian had to do the same without scaring Becca away. It was good to see the rest of the gang, Gage, Garrett, Marley, Ginger, and all the others. My only wish was that there could have been a bit more drama with the crazy inmate. I am twisted like that. To have Aidan come save her from him but other than that it was an excellent story.
I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
I am really loving this series. Becca has been hurt so has lived the last 3 years of her life being alone and she likes it that way. She refuses to be hurt again. Aiden is a family friend and has done nothing but casual flings because when he met Becca 10 years ago he knew she was it for him but he had almost given up hope. A chance encounter brings the two of them together, Aiden is all in but Becca keeps pushing him away. She takes off to Alaska to get away from him but he soon follows her. Lots of sexy scenes and a HEA.
The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point).

So I started reading this Last Frontier Lodge series, because I noticed it was set in Alaska. There seem to be a lot of books set there. I recently got one and somehow didn't realize it was book 4 but I really liked it. So then I saw I had some of the earlier books and went to read them. Each book is about 250 pages, so a quick read.
I love the world in these books with a ski lodge set in remote beauty of an Alaskan small town. The characters are also well developed and easy to like. Their emotions are realistic, well except the fast action on their almost immediate lust. They are old enough, late 20s to early 30s, to know what they want and don't want, though. These books are full of hot, sexy scenes, but they don't seem like too much.
Just This Once is sort of a best friend's little sister trope, or maybe friends to lovers? Aidan was in the Seals with Gage, and Becca is Gage's younger sister. So they have known each other for many years. Circumstances give Aidan a chance to spend time with Becca and he is all in. He doesn't want to scare her off though, so he has to control himself.
While Aidan tries to adjust things to see her more often, circumstances send her out of town. Everyone else sees how it is, coworkers, friends, and family members. But Becca doesn't want to admit she cares or actually care about anyone because she could get hurt. Aidan follows her to Alaska and she is happy to see him. But she is still ridiculous, which kind of makes me mad. Luckily, events make them both realize what is really important.
Another great read! I tell you I love each of these books so far.
In this story Becca, Garrett's twin sister, is a prosecutor with a big heart. But when an inmate has it out for her and pushes his weight around she is forced to take a long vacation.
Aiden, Gage's best friend and ex Seal, owns his own security firm. A hero in all things. Saving and protecting people. He is a man with a mission and that mission is Becca. He has loved her from afar for many years. He has watched her throw herself into her work and watched her have her heart-broken. He has been waiting patiently, biding his time. When that time comes in a passionate unplanned kiss on his part and a deal struck on her part, he realizes his dream can come true. All he has to do is let her lead and not spook her.
When Becca leaves for Alaska to visit family for a month, Aiden feels that all hope is lost. That he will lose the ground work that he has already laid out. When a text tells him not to call anymore he panics. What will he do? Can he save her heart??
This was a really sweet story. I enjoyed it immensely. I did kind of see the book going one way, but the author did not seem to explore that avenue. I really was looking forward to a little more danger. I just felt a different story lining up. Still a good story though.
The characters are lovable and entertaining. The setting is beautiful and peaceful. What more could you ask for. A definite cozy read with a little hot sexy man thrown in. A little toe curling action with sweet romance. So curl up by the fire with a glass of wine and get ready for a sweet ride.
I really like the Last Frontier Lodge series and that it's set in Alaska. It’s a beautiful setting and everyone is so relaxed and happy there. But Just This Once starts with Becca working in Seatle as a lawyer. When she had an accident, Aiden, an old friend of her brother’s, stopped to help her. They had always been attracted to each other but didn’t let on. This time was different. Becca had sworn off men after catching her fiancé with another woman just before their wedding so she hadn’t been with a man for a couple of years.
Not wanting her ex to be the last man she had sex with, she propositioned Aiden with the plan that they have sex just once. He didn’t have to think twice about it but accepted immediately. But “just once” wasn’t enough for either of them.
This was a hot romance with well-developed characters in a gorgeous setting. Aidan, being an ex-Navy SEAL and tall, dark, and handsome was perfect. Like Becca, he didn’t want a relationship, though for different reasons. Becca was very stubborn but loosened up as she began to trust Aidan. When she was forced to take a month long vacation, she visited her brother in Alaska. After a couple of weeks, Aiden was worried that she would talk herself into ending their relationship so he went there too.
This was a good story but there was too much sex that wasn’t necessary for the story. It was interesting to see how Becca and Aiden struggled with their feelings. Can they trust each other?
Hollis McCarthy's deep voice is an easy one to listen to, whilst telling the story between ex Navy Seal Aidan McNamara (Gage's Best Friend) & attorney (another attorney in the Hamilton's) Becca Hamilton. Aidan had fallen for Becca since he first laid eyes on her, that'd been 10 yrs prior, but she's not able to trust a man again since she caught the man she was going to marry JUST BEFORE she was to marry. So we see how Aidan came across Becca in an accident on her way home & this is when he couldn't hold back any longer, he had to have her & she him, but of course when one of them says no matter WHAT it's ONLY going to be a one time event. But when that connection happens it's a scary factor & after Becca's old case they hear that the person is going to go after the prosecutor, so we see her go to her brothers. But this period of time even though we hear the 2 of them talking he can't handle it, especially when Becca tells him that they shouldn't carry on, we see Aidan go after her. And of course, something has to happen, for Becca realise how Deep her True Feelings are for him. So it's an easy & fairly short love story & I suggest for you to read as it's always great to listen to how each character finally get together, especially as we'll be seeing them in the future Last Frontier Lodge 😘
I liked the story. This author is a very good story teller. I wanted to give it 5 stars because the story is that good. However I don’t think the author knows the difference between “steamy contemporary romance” and just plain “porn.” There is at least 3 maybe 4 chapters that are nothing but pure porn. The good thing is it is contained in its own chapter so that you can go around it without taking away from the story; which just goes to show you that it is unnecessary to the story. Doesn’t add anything to the story. We are all adults so there is no reason to be so explicit or take so much time and space for it. It doesn’t take nearly that much effort for our imagination to get the idea. And the fact is the story has nothing to do with the sex or physical part of Aidan and Becca’s relationship. Becca’s family and Aidan have been friends for quite some time. Aidan and Becca have always had an attraction to one another, long before Becca’s experience with her ex-fiancé. And what finally wins Becca’s heart is not the sex as good as it may be; but Aidan has proven that he can be trusted. He is a man Becca can trust. He is nothing like her no good cheating ex-fiancé. At no point does he force himself on Becca and when she needs space he willing gives it to her. Aidan wins Becca because he is trustworthy, respectful, and loving.
I thought this book was really sweet. J.H. Croix has a talent for developing characters. I felt like all of the characters had unique wants/needs and that I knew each of them. I voted it down because of a) the repetitive nature of the book, and b) the "steamy" scenes. Throughout the book Becca's on this broken record loop of "I really like him, but how I could I say just once" then "Oh now, now it's twice, I thought I could get him out of my system" and Aidan's on this loop of "I don't know how to handle my feelings, but I really like her and have forever." I wish their thoughts would have been more dynamic. Also, the author used the word "damn" WAY too much. I'd bee willing to argue there's damn at least once or twice on every single page, and no other cuss words. As far as the steamy part goes, I think this book should have been called like it is: an erotic romance. Because really, the sex goes on for pages and pages and even when they're not having sex, they're thinking about it. I just ended up flipping through those pages.
As the series continues I have been enjoying it more and more. I might say this in every review, but it has yet to top her Swoon Series. Even though this series isn’t my favorite, it is still worth the read! Just This Once was the third book in J.H. Croix’s Last Frontier Lodge Series. They are all inter-connected, but can be read as stand-alones. It was sweet, sexy, and heartwarming.
Becca had a few trust issues from being left a few days before her wedding. She poured herself into her work and didn’t pay attention to the opposite sex. That may have been why she didn’t see Aidan coming.
Aidan had been infatuated with Becca for years. But timing had never been on his side until now. A small accident had him coming to her rescue and he knew it was his chance. But would their expectations of what they could be match up?
I loved how in control Aidan was until it came to Becca. He was head over heels for her! They were so cute together! It was also great to see updates of everyone!!
I quite enjoyed this free kindle read! It was a new author so I was glad I took the chance. I liked both Aiden and Becca - although I liked Aiden's character a bit more. Sometimes Becca got on my nerves with her wishy-washy attitude, but overall she was a decent character. It didn't stop me from reading the story anyway!
Even though I enjoyed this book, I would have liked to have read a bit more about their relationship and dates they went on. At times, the author skipped over those areas to "get to the good parts". It made it seem as if there were more sexy times than another romantic novel might have.
I also would have liked a bit more with the ending of the story. For me, it ended strange before we saw the epilogue and the HEA. Spoiler ahead: the author did not include my favorite part of a romantic story - the proposal.
That having been said, I plan to read other novels by this author that were free kindle downloads.
Becca has sworn off men a few year ago after she found her fiancé getting blow job from her best friend. Now she throws herself into her work as a public defender. Aiden is her brothers best friend from when they were SEAL's and has been hiding he feelings for Becca since the day he met her over a decade ago. He figured that being a SEAL and away most of the time that a relationship was not in the cards for him. He just never change his thinking after he retired. Now he is busy running his own private security company and doesn't have time for relationships. When they finally do get together things get explosive between them and they both realize they have been hiding their feelings. The only thing is they both like to be in control of everything in their lives and when they are together they both lose all control. Will they be able to work things out? What will Becca's brothers do when they find out that Becca and Aiden are together?
These books just keep getting better in my opinion! Aiden has been in love with Becca, his best friends little sister, since he first laid eyes on her ten yrs ago! A former Navy SEAL, he kept his distance, knowing his deployments and missions would be too hard on her. Becca is a tough as nails prosecutor and has sworn off men and any type of relationship. That’s what happens when you find your fiancé in a compromising position with one of your bridesmaids, two days before your wedding! She is embarrassed and bitter. There is no way her attraction to Aiden will ever go anywhere! Until one rainy night outside of Seattle where Aiden finds her in the ditch after being run off the road. Their first kiss is a scorcher! Knocking them both sideways and upside down! Now, neither of them knows what to do with the feeling running through their heads! This story was hot, sexy, steamy and sweet all rolled into one nice package! Check this series out today!
A Love long Time In The Making - Becca was really devastated when she walked in on her fiancé and best friend cheating on her, but she had to leave town for a while, as she could be around the cheaters. However, her journey home home was truly eventful, as she had to be rescued from a car accident by her brother’s best friend, Aiden, whom she used to have a crush on.
Becca was really conflicted, as spending time with Aiden rekindled her old attraction towards him and even though she had sworn off men for the foreseeable future, Aiden made her aware that he had feelings for her. Even though Becca tried everything to keep their relationship platonic, she finally realised she was fighting a losing battle, after Aiden rescued her again and he declared his intentions towards her. After acknowledging their love for each other, they embarked on a fulfilling journey towards a happily ever after. This was a beautifully written story, showing that everything in our lives happens for a reason.
I’ve finished this whole series and every book is amazing. I’ve fallen in love with Diamond Creek and Alaska with it, not to mention the characters whom I’ve grown quite attached to! All the books contain a lovely, heart-warming and VERY hot romance. Although each book is a standalone, I recommend reading them in the proper order as we get glimpses and clues of the next couple in the current book, and get to see the evolution of the preceding couples in each new book we’re reading.
In Just this Once, Garrett’s twin sister Becca gets a real chance at love, but she won’t make it easy for Aiden! In fact, she fights the emotional and physical attraction she has toward him to the point of needing to travel to Alaska to get her head straight. Aiden proves to be more than she ever expected, and everything she ever wanted, but only after dealing with his own issues with relationships.
Such a cute story!! I didn't know this was part of a series going into it, when I found out I thought about stopping, but was already into the story by then so I finished it. I will be reading the rest of the series because I thought this one was so perfect!
Loved Aidan. He was a fabulous male lead and I think could have several more books just with him. He was so interested. Becca was the perfect female to the alpha male. Aidan's sister was a great addition. I hope to read more of her in the future.
I like the characters, but the story line of he or she doesn't want to risk their heart because they've been burned is getting old. One character runs away. It feels like the author is trying to create drama where there really isn't any. And I'm sick of the lip-biting, and the words lush, drenched and rumpled!! Let's find a thesaurus please! Not sure I'm going to continue this series.
This is sweet romance. I enjoy the Last Frontier series, the characters are likeable and entertaining, and J.H. Croix's story really make me want to travel to Alaska. Becca and Aiden have each hidden their feelings for a long time and in this book they finally have to face their feelings and accept how good they are as a couple. The addition of Oscar to the mix is really cute. I look forward to more of this series.
Becca and Aidan's story is a real page-turner and had me hooked from beginning to end. Their emotional jumble made their story so relatable and believable. Becca is a burned child when it comes to relationships, and her insecurities about her feelings for Aidan only make her prickly personality all the more endearing. And Aidan is just a dream of a man. Again, Ms. Croix managed to pull me into this love story with the first few pages. This series just keeps getting better with each book. Wow!
Perfect easy read romance novel. Just the right blend of sexy and sweet! I loved the Alaskan setting as well. I like that you can pick up at any point in the series with these books. I haven't read the first two in the series but had no problem jumping in. I look forward to reading more from this author.
If all the hot sex was omitted, there was not much left. Aiden has had a thing for Becca for years, but after she caught her fiance with another woman in a compromising position , she swore off men and relationships for three years.....until Auden. Most of the book is hot sex. If you like it, it is fine, but I don't think a well written book needs that.
5-star read. Another great read from J.H. Croix. Becca is a strong will woman and thinks she doesn't need any man, after her wedding was stopped 2 days from happening. Aiden is a former Navy Seal and runs his own security firm. He's loved her for years. Will they come together like they are meant to.
This is the third book in the Last Frontier Lodge series. Adien had unrequited love for 'Becca for years. He never felt he stood a chance with her. 'Becca had a horrible experience with her ex that caused close her heart to love. Family love and friendship helped them find their way to each other.
Great story. Trying to shut love out of your life is sometimes destined to fail. This is a great love story of two people who always cared for each other but thought there was no chance.
I was waiting for Becca and Aidan’s story. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. A definite rollercoaster ride of emotions to a HEA. Sweet and definitely steamy!!
