About the author

Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

Di nuovo al torneo!

Highlights:

SPOILER ALERT

- Junior bellissimo, il più bello di tutti
- Goku che all'inizio del torneo si presenta in versione adulta, così, dal nulla
- Goku che non possiede alcun concetto di moglie e matrimonio
- Goku che non nonostante questo accetta di sposare Chichi
- Goku e Chichi che risultano già sposati perché Goku ha detto "va bene"
- L'omino che in realtà è Dio

E' di nuovo tempo di torneo Tenkaichi e Goku ritorna più grande e più forte di prima per combattare contro una (non troppo) nuova minaccia. Insieme alla sua figura "adulta" siamo davanti anche a una svolta dei toni della storia, che diventeranno ancora più marcati nei volumi successivi. Ovviamente, l'opera rimane sempre un capolavoro indiscusso, ma devo dire che lo stacco fa sentire la mancanza del Goku bambino, i primi volumi sono avvolti da un'atmosfera insuperabile e irripetibile.

Chissà se Shenlong può tornare... poi... saltiamo al nuovo Torneo Tenkaichi con nuovi concorrenti interessanti. Non sarà facile e vedremo Son Goku di nuovo in azione. È interessante anche la scelta narrativa di questo volume. Non è cambiato il tono, ma si è fatto un pochettino più maturo.

Shenlong berhasil dihidupkan kembali oleh dewa sehingga orang-orang terdekat Goku, seperti Master Roshi, Krilin, Chiaotzu--yang dibunuh oleh Piccolo--juga kembali hidup.

Kemudian, kisah pun berlanjut dengan keadaan tiga tahun kemudian. Goku sudah terlihat lebih dewasa di sini, sehingga Bulma cukup tertarik kepadanya. Begitu juga dengan Krilin, Tien, dan Yamcha yang sudah berlatih selama itu. Mereka berkumpul untuk kembali berpartisipasi di budokai tenkaichi. Beberapa peserta baru pun muncul di sini, yaitu Chi-chi (yang sempat tidak dikenali oleh Goku dkk.), anak dari Piccolo, dan dewa yang menyamar. Masing-masing dari mereka akan menunjukkan kekuatan yang selama ini mereka latih, terutama Goku yang semakin kuat.

Enfin, l'arrivée de celui qui deviendra mon personnage préféré dans DBZ, Piccolo.

Ce tome couvre la fin de l'arc sur le Démon Piccolo et le début de l'entrainement de Goku chez le Tout-Puissant puis, après une ellipse de trois ans, la première partie du 23ème Tenkaichi Budokai.

Les personnages sont devenus bien plus puissants et on se rapproche de DBZ (où leurs pouvoirs vont exponentiellement augmentés).

Un très bon tome dans lequel on sent qu'on arrive à la fin de Dragon Ball.

From here through early Namek is probably my favorite look for the entire series. A nice balance of the rounded shapes of the early years and not quite as overly muscled and angular as Toriyama’s work will become. And man he continues to just be an incredible visual storyteller. Piccolo is also the best character in the entire series and the version we know best is introduced here.

La frequenza dei tornei Tenkaichi forse inizia ad essere un po’ elevata rispetto all’avanzare della storia, ma i combattimenti rimangono avvincenti come l’ottima caratterizzazione dei nuovi personaggi.

L’arrivé du démon Piccolo amène une nouvelle ère aux aventures de Dragon Ball. Le tome commence avec l’assassinat de Krilin, l’un des personnages emblématiques de la série.
Piccolo est un vrai de vrai vilain contrairement à Pilaf et à l’armée du ruban rouge.
