Laird Ewan MacConnell and his elite guard are fierce Highland warriors prepared for absolutely anything. Until a toddler wanders into their camp and robs them blind. When the warriors follow the tiny bandit back to her hideout, they find a lot more than they were looking for. The feisty Lady Cate from England has unexpectedly become responsible for the three orphaned Chadwick siblings. Running from an unknown threat, the young family takes refuge in the Highlands. Together Ewan and Cate must eliminate the danger to have any chance at a future.
The Highlander's Gift was a fairly quick read. It had a great beginning and drew you in immediately.
Lady Cate has found herself in a rather difficult predicament. Due to a serious act of treachery, young Lady Cate finds herself on the run and now the sole carer of three young children. Lord Chadwick, the father of Gabriella, Grayson and Georgie Chadwick, has been brutally cut down in front of his children. In order to protect them Lady Cate is running as far as she can, as fast as she can, to keep the children from harm. She has no idea who she can trust, so she trusts no one. What she doesn't expect, is to be discovered hiding out with the children, by a Scottish Laird on his way home with a handful of warriors. She has Georgie to thank for that. Georgie wanders into the warrior's camp and proceeds to steal all the food that she can carry (or eat) and at least one dagger. Laird Ewan MacConnell is quite astounded to see such a small tyke out and about alone, so he decides to follow her... Thus Lady Cate and the other two children are discovered. Ewan is stunned to find this little group of unprotected English people inside the boarders of Scotland, particularly since they don't seem to know that that is where they are. He can easily see that they have been through something very, very traumatic and he wants to know what it was. He feels a strong urge to keep them safe from potential harm and to that end, the decision is made to take them home with him. What follows is the story of Laird Ewan trying to discover what happened and how best to help them all through their trauma, and hopefully offer them a second chance at life within his clan. Laird Ewan has sworn off women after being betrayed by one, but he finds himself drawn to the feisty young Lady Cate. He admires her strength and loyalty to the children she has taken into her care, and if he isn't careful.... She's going to burrow her way into his heart. Georgie was a stand out character in this story, she is such a little scene stealer, you can't help but love her. She will have you in fits of laughter. She is one tough little customer, and her constant stealing and hiding of weapons is the source of a fair amount of friction. She has no trouble at all wrapping that huge, sometimes overbearing Laird right around her little finger, though. It is adorable to watch her make his heart melt every chance she gets.
There were a few flow issues for me, but this was basically a good story with a gripping climax, brief though it may have been. For a quick romance fix with a nice helping of humour.... Give this one a go.
I loved this book as much as I love Michelle’s other books. This book has hot highlanders in kilts, romance, danger, and more. Laird Ewan McConnell and some of his men are returning to their hold when in the middle of the night a tiny little lass wonders into their camp and being to riffle through their things and steal them. The men follow the girl to see where she goes. What they find is Cate and her other wards. He can’t believe that they would be out alone without any protection. So Ewan does what he does best and that’s take charge. Once they are feed and warm he informs them that they will be accompanying him and his men back to the keep. Cate thinks Ewan is incredibly bossy and lets him know it. Cate is determined to prove that she can take care of herself and the children. She made a vow to never to depend on a man for anything ever again. Ewan finds himself attracted to Cate like he has never been attracted to any other woman before. He finds himself torn between how he feels and the way he thinks he needs to be. Cate is young and inexperienced and completely taken by surprise by the way she feels for Ewan. Will Cate and the kids be welcomed in the hold? Will they cave to their feelings? I really liked this book. Cate is super stubborn and yet fragile at the same time. Ewan believes he needs act a certain way as the Laird and afraid that Cate may change that. The children are funny and crazy. The people at the hold are great. Michelle is a fantastic author and writes great stories. Her characters are also great and entertaining. Congratulations on another great book Michelle. I was given this book in return for an honest review.
