Jane Miller, CEO and founder of JaneKnows, a career advice website, has spent three decades in the corporate world. For the past twenty, she's become the highest ranking woman in every company she's worked in including Pepsi Co, Heinz and many others. Now, she's written a how-to for millennials wanting to make it to the top. Maybe the only woman to ever launch a book with a lingerie line (boy shorts and black nighties with Swarovski crystal lettering) Jane's story of a small town Illinois girl who made it to the top is a sassy, substantial read, headlined with myths (Size Doesn't Matter/You Can Sleep Your Way to the Top); punctuated by devilish text boxes ("let's walk out now and get drunk on morning martinis"); and containing end of chapter Mirror Mirrors to help 20-somethings on their way to their individual tops. Sleep Your Way to the Top is the go-to guide for grads, pre-grads and new execs, showing us where it's easy to get tripped up, who might trick us and how to make it past the pitfalls on our way to the corner office.
Some useful tidbits throughout. Seems best geared for college juniors/seniors or those in the first 0-2 years of their career. I liked the audio book and hearing about Jane Miller’s background, career experiences, and lessons learned in her own voice. Would not recommend for anyone who has been working for more than 2 years, but can see a lot of value for more junior women starting off their career or finishing college. Jane has a really inspiring background and story. Jane’s mom was a teenager when she had her and Jane grew up quite poor. She recognized education as her way out and ended up having a successful career across many consumer product companies, like Frito-Lay and Heinz.
Giant con: Can’t believe there is literally a whole chapter with “practical advice” about if you start falling for your boss…..what a waste of time. A bit insulting for the author to think the reader needs help debating if it’s worth it to sleep with a married man who you report to and how that could impact your career…..This is the second-to-last chapter and it really soured the book for me. Would have given 3 stars without this chapter.
I've read so many 'how to succeed in business' books and most are really hard to get through. Jane Miller's book is funny and interesting and filled with great advice. I particularly loved the Myth: Size Doesn't Matter and not just because it makes me laugh. It's about playing 100% full out, no matter what your title is, giving it all. It's the business equivalent of Annie Dillard's wonderful quote about writing: "One of the few things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time...give it, give it all, give it now.” Jane's book will inspire you to play your biggest game yet. She takes your hand and leads you down the path of exactly how to begin doing that.Sleep Your Way to the Top
*disclaimer- I work with FG Press the publishing company that published Jane's book.
This book was was defiantly worth my time and I would encourage anyone and everyone to read this book. It is packed with great life lessons/thoughts based on the situations, successes, and mistakes that Jane made.
"No decision is a bad decision... if you learn from it." - Jane Miller
It touches on various topics like resume writing, interviewing, being a team player, and when is the right time to leave a company. At the end of each chapter, there are questions to ask yourself, that I believe are designed to make you more aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Also, depending on where you are in your career you can use some of the questions/situations she poses to help you try to figure out what your dream job is and how that may or may not relate to your current job/role.
Finishing this book was really easy, the only painful part was my lack of sleep since I couldn't put the book down as I always wanted to finish another chapter before shutting my eyes.
Where have you been all my life, Jane? Sleep Your Way to the Top (and other myths about business success) is an excellent how-to guide for climbing the corporate ladder. The book is filled with great advice, stories, support and exercises for making it in the business world...all infused with tons of fun and humor and healthy doses of reality. Sleep Your Way to the Top is an enjoyable read, a fantastic roadmap, a titillating autobiography, a heartfelt offering and an edgy study on the many questions, challenges and situations facing today’s women in the workplace.
Sleep Your Way to the Top is the perfect buy for someone that is about to graduate from college, or is just starting out in their career. It's a super easy read, but it is packed with amazing advice. Jane encourages you to use a WOW (what obviously works) journal to boost your confidence and highlight your successes rather than your failures. It is a book that any young woman can read and go back to when each of those "myths" arise while she is climbing the corporate ladder. A fun, sassy, and inspiring book written by an empowering successful woman; can't beat it.
One of the easiest reads about a serious subject: how a woman can succeed (or fail) in the corporate world. Jane Miller shares her hard-earned tips--and more surprisingly, her mistakes along the way. Give this to the promising young women you know! (And if you are really brave, give it to the men who will be their bosses.)
This book was a great read. It tackles the seriousness of succeeding in business as a young woman in a very easy-to-digest, light-hearted way. Jane's voice is perfect and her message is clear. I would definitely recommend this to any woman either looking for career advice, or just any woman who is looking for a fun, relatable read about life at the office.
Great book for women just starting their careers that need help navigating the corporate world! Quick and easy read. Filled with humor and practical advise for millennials.
