Getting His Way

Rate this book
Sapphire Falls, book seven

Bryan Murray always knew that he wanted to come home to Sapphire Falls and settle down with Tessa Sheridan. After all, Tessa's sweet and kind and beautiful and planning to live in Sapphire Falls forever. Best of all, she's loved him since kindergarten. She's the perfect forever girl for him. He just didn't expect it to all happen quite like this. But a not-so-little tumble down a mountain while biking has turned his life upside down and landed him back at home.

A longtime coach to high level athletes, Bryan knows all about facing obstacles head-on and turning challenges into opportunities. So, things aren't going exactly the way he planned them-- at least Tessa is the same girl who's just been waiting for him to come home.

Tessa has been saving herself for Bryan in every way. She's even been saving her pennies so she could move to Colorado to train with him for the marathon trophies she's got her heart set on--a new passion she's discovered all because of Bryan. But now he's messed everything up. Not only is he bartending instead of coaching, but he's decided to go from a hot, sexy playboy type to sweet romantic boyfriend material. And worst of all, he's doing it all in Sapphire Falls.

What's a girl gotta do to get away from her hometown and have an adventure or two? Now that marathon training and hot sex against the shower wall are out of the question with Bryan, Tess has to come up with a new plan to make her dreams, and fantasies, come true. All while being romanced by the only man who's ever had her heart.

Slick's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

I think this might be the first time in my history of reading Erin Nicholas (and she is one of the FEW authors I've read everything she's written) that 86% in I had an uneasy feeling that this book wasn't going to end the way I wanted it to. To be honest about 55%, I almost messaged Erin and asked her what the hell she was trying to do to me. So to be perfectly clear, yes there is an HEA at the end of Getting His Way, but this couple had a very long, hard and winding road to get there and I appreciate that this author didn't make it easy because with this couple's history they both needed time and perspective to really understand that what they had and what they wanted was real and life-long.

Tessa Sheridan has been in love with Bryan Murray since he claimed her on the kindergarten playground, okay so the love has changed over the years and while she is now convinced she is "over him" Bryan plans to prove that he's the one for her just like he knows he is everything she's wanted her whole life. He sounds a bit cocky doesn't he? The answer is yes and there lies the problem with their "relationship." It would be easy to paint Tessa with the "get a life" brush as she has waited most of her life for Bryan to see her, to want her and to love her for the rest of their lives, but Tessa has a full life one she enjoys. She's a great person who spends her time working three jobs (all of which she loves), she volunteers her time and for the last 2 years she has been running with the idea she'll compete in some half marathons and eventually marathon runs. While she began running to help out a friend, she also did it to understand Bryan better and to get over him; to give her something new to focus on and it has worked. Bryan has returned to Sapphire Falls following an accident that left him with a partial spinal cord injury; he's recovered remarkably and loves his work at the Come Again, the town's only bar but he's kept his distance from Tessa because he wanted to have something more to offer her when he was ready. Following his accident and recovery he knew he'd return to Sapphire Falls and he intended to settle down with Tessa, but Bryan neglected one big thing he's never let Tessa in on his plans and now that he's decided he's ready for that step Tessa has some big plans that don't include him.

At times these two seemed so far apart, but even in those times there was this invisible link between them that just couldn't be denied. My heart broke for both of these characters over the course of this book; for Bryan who just couldn't seem to understand why Tessa wasn't falling into line with his plans and for Tessa who was so torn, but knew she had to finally do something for herself; something that belonged just to her. I admired Tessa for being willing to uproot her whole life and everything that she's known to chase her dream especially since she was choosing her life over the guy she'd been in love with most of her life. Sometimes Bryan seemed so clueless and his selfishness amazed me, but then he'd turn around and do something so remarkable that I couldn't stay mad at him.

Ms. Nicholas did a fantastic job of weaving in all of the previous Sapphire Falls couples as well as many of the people of the town into this story, but we never lost sight of the fact that this was Tessa and Bryan's journey. Sure the other characters offered up some comic relief, a few very interesting suggestions and a whole lot of advice, but it was Tessa and Bryan who ultimately had to do some growing up, some soul searching and compromising to realize both their dreams could come true.

I have loved this series from the start and Getting His Way is another wonderful piece of the German chocolate cake of life that is the Sapphire Falls world.

I seem to be really attracted to stories that frustrate the living hell outta me and leave me pondering over the characters long after I've finished the book. There is something about falling in love with characters that also make your eyes roll back into your head.

After meeting Bryan in Getting Over It (I'm reading these books out of order so he may have existed prior to this book, but that's where I met him) and seeing how he knocked some sense into Ty, I was super excited to read about him and Tess.

I did NOT expect that he would be as cocky and arrogant as Ty at times and that someone would need to knock some sense into him too.

I love how dedicated Tess is to Bryan but I was ecstatic to see her spread her passion to something for herself as well. If I could fall in love with running, I would be a happy happy girl. Alas, I'm more of a walker.

I'm fairly new to the Sapphire Falls series but it's quickly becoming one of my favorites, frustrating and cocky characters and all!

I always love visiting Sapphire Falls, and this latest friends to lovers story was an overall enjoyable read, with one exception (which I'll get to in a spoiler down below). Bryan and Tessa have known each other since children, and in fact, have known that they would end up together. Except that Tessa got tired of waiting for Bryan, and now he's got his work cut out for him to convince her that the time is finally right for them.

I really liked both of their characters. Bryan is a very friendly, sociable, conscientious man, if a little clueless where Tessa is concerned. He knows she's had a crush on him forever, but it never occurred to him that he should make more of an effort to show her how much he's appreciated the care and concern she's showered on him until he learns that she plans to leave town. He's overcome a lot of adversity with the deep seated knowledge that Tessa would always be there for him. And she was there for him, no doubt, but now she needs to take some time to do things for herself.

I loved that Tessa is a runner, and I really appreciated the details of her journey in that regard, because I am a runner myself, and I know how much effort and hard work goes into preparing for races. Because of this, there is a scene near the end of the story, that disappointed me greatly. Readers who are not athletes probably won't take any notice of it, but it brought the book down for me. Spoiler below!

There are some great scenes with Bryan, Tessa, and the rest of the Sapphire Falls gang, and lots of laugh out loud moments. There is a cute shout out to Rhian Cahill's book Erotic Research which made me totally want to pick it up too. Bryan and Tessa have some great chemistry between them, and while this book had less sexy scenes than some of the other stories in this series, they definitely got onto the same page by the end.

Fans of the series will definitely enjoy picking this one up, it's a lighthearted romantic and sexy read. 3.5 stars (dropped from 4 because of the spoiler above).

Welcome back to my most favourite place ever!!! This story is about Bryan Murray and Tessa Sheridan, we met Bryan before he is Ty Bennetts best friend and is also a true Sapphire Falls boy born and reared. Tess has loved Bryan since she was 8yrs old and that's a long time to love someone and help build them up, so much so that they have a massive ego to where Bryan can't fit his head through the door.
Tess is sweet and kind, she has 3 jobs on the go and is the back bone of Sapphire Falls, but is sick of waiting for some HOT DITY SEX so she decides to come up with a plan. Bryan on the other hand had always figured when he was finished making something of himself that Tess would be there waiting for him, but a girl can only wait for so long!!!! It was hilarious reading about Bryan's reaction to learning that he really didn't know Tess as well as he thought. It had everything a Sapphire Falls/Erin Nicholas book has - I laughed, OMG I laughed at the Blue Brigade, all the people trying to help out Bryan to finally SEE Tessa.
Best Quote - "Athletes were nuts. A case could be made for people in Sapphire Falls being a little nuts too, of course. But they were good nuts. Happy nuts, satisfied nuts". I also have to mention the scene in Ty's living-room with all the Bennett boys (wives too) where Bryan tries to out Kathy Bennett being part of the book club, its kind of an underground thing.
It is HOT sweet sexy and romantic and funny definitely a book to add to your TBR!!! So settle down with a nice COLD drink and a comfy chair, and enjoy the visit back to Sapphire Falls because I guarantee you won't want to move until its finished. Hats to off to you Erin Nicholas and your freaking AWESOME books!!!

I consider myself a charter member of the Erin Nicholas auto buys and LOVE everything she has written. One of the things that I love most about Erin Nicholas stories is that they are all uniquely different and completely relatable. I often compare myself to her heroines or my life experiences with her stories. Sometimes, however, one of her stories hits me in the gut - it speaks to me in a way that makes me feel like Erin Nicholas has written a story especially for me. Getting His Way is one of those stories.

Within this sexy love story in Sapphire Falls we get to witness a wonderful example of self-discovery and empowerment in Tessa. I finished this story feeling optimistic and driven to find my *mountain top*.

Another aspect of this story that I truly appreciated was the author's approach to the hero's partial spinal cord injury. We knew going into this story Bryan's history and about his injury. Often times that is the driving force in the plot of other stories. Was it an issue? Sure, but not in the way you might imagine. Bryan didn't let his injury deter him in his pursuit of Tessa and it didn't make Tessa love him any less. Erin Nicholas treated the injury like a physical trait versus the conflict between the two characters. I think that was awesome!!

And with all Erin Nicholas stories, Getting His Way is full of humor, fun and some very *hot* sexy scenes. I have absolutely fallen in love with her voice and find that any time I read one of her stories that it flows smoothly for me. It was a wonderful addition to the Sapphire Falls series! I highly recommend this book as well as all the other in the series.

Admittedly I LOVE the Sapphire Falls series by Erin Nicholas, but I have to say I've just been totally WOW'd by GETTING HIS WAY! I did not want to put it down!!! The fact I was trying to read it during a crazy time for me meant I had to repeatedly put it down, but I was stealing time with Tessa and Bryan any time I had a few minutes. Chapter by chapter, and sometimes paragraph by paragraph if that's all I could sneak in, lol.

One big difference in Getting His Way and other Sapphire Falls books, for me anyway, was I was more focused on the female lead... Tessa... than I was the hunky male lead, Bryan. Believe me, Bryan was drool worthy, witty, charming, romantic, confident and sexy with just the right touch of humble to make him excellent book boyfriend material. But Tessa was inspiring, surprising, sassy, self-motivated, kind, sweet, curvy, beautiful, and confidently in charge of her own life. She knew what she wanted and didn't shy away from going for it... or asking for it... or demanding it... when the occasion called for it. EN took a girl who'd seemed shy in the background of earlier books and proved her to be a force to be reckoned with. Poor Bryan didn't know which way was up or down for a while there as Tessa blew to pieces all his preconceptions of the girl he'd left waiting.

This story was fantastic! As always a comical blend of Sapphire Falls characters to bring balance and lots of humor along with a warm, fuzzy, small town feel. And steam with just the right amount of dirty talk mixed in with all the sigh-worthy sweet romance. Great read from the first page to the last! 4.5 stars

Sweet & Sassy!

This series is my new favorite! I love the camaraderie between the characters and town and, even though I read them out of order, it's not hard to know what's going on. In fact, it's made me want to read the other books more so I can get to know the characters I've already read about, better. I love the heroine in this book. She's sweet but sassy, and knows exactly what she wants. Also, although she's loved the hero since she was five, she doesn't just fall into his arms once he decides he finally wants her. She makes him work for it. I loved that!

Oh Bryan!

I love Sapphire Falls and all its residents and festivals. Tessa has loved Bryan forever. But now that he has returned to Sapphire Falls and is ready to settle down he finds that the girl he always thought would be there...isn't. Both these characters grew and changed so much during this story, it was wonderful to see. I'm looking forward to the next book in thus series!

GETTING HIS WAY made me laugh out loud. There are some lines that are real gems. I'd list some of them, but some can't be repeated here. ;-)

Both the hero and the heroine were lovable. I couldn't put the book down.

I recommend GETTING HIS WAY and the Sapphire Falls series.

If I had to choose one word to best describe Getting His Way it would be unexpected. But….unexpected in the most INCREDIBLE way! Book 7 in the Sapphire Falls series by Erin Nicholas does not disappoint. Of course, I never expected it to. Erin has a way of writing a story that will suck you in from the very first word and not let you go until long after reading it. Bryan and Tessa’s love story was no exception to that. I’ve been waiting to get my hands on Bryan since I met him in Getting Over It and he was most definitely worth the wait! I thought I knew how this book would go, but it surprised me over and over…..hence the unexpected! ;)

Bryan Murray is one hot man. Confident, cocky, funny, strong, sexy and determined. To say I love him is an understatement. His arrogance had me rolling my eyes, laughing my butt off and swooning all at the same time! How is that even possible? He didn’t let his accident and injury slow him down one bit and maybe that’s why I fell for him the way I did. Tessa Sheridan is the girl I wish I was. Loving, happy, feisty, independent and everyone’s friend. She set her sights on her dream and no one was going to stop her….not even Bryan. And I loved her so much for that!

Bryan and Tess were simply explosive. They belonged together and you could see it from the first page. As much as I wanted to punch him for keeping poor Tess in the “friend zone”, I wanted to just squeeze and kiss him for encouraging her to follow her dreams. Tess handled Bryan so well I wanted to give her a high five. No one could do it better than she could. She didn’t settle for less than everything she and it made the book that much hotter!
In all honesty, I couldn’t have loved this book more!

Happy reading!

Welcome back to Sapphire Falls. Meet Bryan Murray who is best friends with Ty Bennett and has lived in Sapphire Falls all his life. Meet Tessa Sheridan, a woman who has been in love with Bryan ever since she was a little girl and has always been there believing in him and supporting him. Bryan has always felt that Tessa was his and once he made something of himself, Tessa would be there to share it with him. The only problem is that Bryan has never given her any indication that that was his plan. Tessa has had enough and is finally done waiting for Bryan. Too many years have been wasted waiting for him to see what is right in front of his eyes. The last straw was when he intervened and scared off a prospective date of hers. Tessa confronts Bryan publicly and lets him know that it is none of his business who she dates and the sparks start flying. The question is: has Bryan waited too long to make a move? Has Tessa totally given up on him and moved on? Can they finally come together, or is it a case of too little too late? This story is sweet, romantic, witty and hysterically funny. I laughed out loud more than once.

The very talented Erin Nicholas has delivered another winner in the Sapphire Falls series. I thoroughly enjoyed Bryan and Tessa's story. This book and all of the books in this series are definite one clicks. You won’t be able to put them down once you start reading them and will fall more in love with Sapphire Falls with each book. I highly recommend this book and the entire series.

5 stars to my favorite town, Sapphire Falls

Erin Nicholas does it every time for me!
I don't know what is it about this town, but I keep falling in love with it with every new story

***SPOILER***
This time was Bryan and Tessa's story and I have to say that the feminist in me was really mad with both characters at the beginning of this book.

With Tessa, because she was 30 years old and still attached to a guy who had put her on stand by almost her entire life and she let him did it. She spent 22 year waiting for someone who was clearly not interested and who was egotistical enough to give her just pieces of him every time he was in town.

And then with Bryan for being such a jerk. I couldn't believe his ego most of the book! He went, he saw the world, had his share of girls and than he just pretended to come back and be with Tess - and for her to be waiting for him as if nothing ever happened.

But at the same time, my feeling towards Bryan are mixed since he's also such a nice guy and caring and inspiring - he could be a depressed failure but he'd embraced his condition and I really liked that about him. Plus, he did anything in his power to get to know Tess after he realized his mistake so a lot of brownie points for him!

Like I said, is the Sapphire Falls magic and I absolutely love every single one of this series' books.
I'm eager to read Peyton's story - I'm wondering when's going to be published...

I've read all of the books to date in the Sapphire Falls series. For me, this one was just so-so. Bryan and Tess are the couple. Tess has been in love with Bryan since she was 5 years old. Bryan has always felt drawn to Tess, but in the 25 years or so since they met, he's dated and slept with other girls and women (never Tess), had a fulfilling career based in Denver, and traveled the world. Meanwhile, Tess has been quietly waiting in Sapphire Falls for him to come home to stay and finally REALLY notice her and act on it. When Bryan does finally come home to stay, it's because of a spinal cord injury that makes it necessary for him to change his lifestyle and career. (He's not paralyzed or anything, but has some limitations due to the injury.) Bryan's been home for more than a year when the story opens and still hasn't pursued Tess, although he's been warning other men to stay away from her. He still sees Tess as the sweet home girl whom everyone likes and admires. But Tess has some secrets, and she's not exactly the same sweet hometown girl who's been waiting for him forever... The story makes some interesting and valid observations about male/female relationships and expectations, but this one just doesn't quite hit the mark for me. I will continue to follow and read this series, however.

Not my favorite

I love Sapphire Falls, I want to live there. I love the characters in all of the books, and I really like Bryan and Tessa, I just didn't like certain parts of their story. I thought Bryan displayed an atrocious double standard toward Tessa, happy for her to be the perpetually sweet girl, in love and waiting for him, while it was fine for him to have a life and adventure and other women, even after he came back home to Sapphire Falls. I was disappointed that Tessa "saved herself" as long as she did, without calling him on his B.S. long before she did. I thought she deserved to have a life, I just don't think she felt the same. And yet, I have to admit, I still liked them, I just wanted her to be stronger.

Ah Tessa and Bryan's book! Tessa has been waiting for Bryan to come back to Sapphire Falls to stay it seems like for years. She has been in love with him since she knew what love was. Bryan has always known about Tessa's love for him and always assumed she would be around when he decided it was time to come home for good. Only problem with this is that Tessa has realized, thanks to Bryan's blogs, that she doesn't want to settle down right now. She wants to run and see the world while doing it. So while Bryan is ready to stay, she is ready to go. Can Bryan convince her that she can have the best of everything with him? Or has he kept Tessa waiting too long?

This one was interesting because it shows one character ready to commit and one character ready to walk away. It's always been Tessa loving Bryan, but now the tables are turned. A lot of the story revolves around Tessa's running, which ended up being interesting. I am not into running myself, but I think Nicholas does a great job of showing us what the appeal would be. When the characters do get on the same page, it's great. It's easy to see this is a couple that will overcome a lot of stress and come out stronger.

Erin Nicholas is always one of my favorite go to authors , and I will read anything that she writes. I was very happy to get the opportunity to go back to the wonderful world she created that is Sapphire Falls. Bryan and Tessa are wonderful characters and I admired their inner strengths. Tessa almost makes me want to run, and I want Bryan as my coach. I'm already looking forward to returning to Sapphire Falls next time.

I really don't feel good about writing this review when the previous books in this series I gushed over. Here are a few problems I've had with this book.

Tess and Bryan best of friends and destined to be together and he's with every ski bunny in Denver? What if he hadn't had the accident? Would he have come home to Sapphire Falls at age 40 when his mom bugged him to give her grandchildren? He only wants her now that he is injured and had to move home?

No one in town noticed that she became a runner? Different weight loss program.

She starts running when he is forced to stop with a life threatening injury?

She's a virgin, he's honored, yet in his office and bent over his desk?

Once Bryan started to train Tess I felt was the first real honest aspect of their so called relationship. The book got real at the 90% read mark.

This is the third book I've read about Sapphire Falls, and it can be read as a standalone, but it is nice to read the others for more of the background and happenings of Sapphire Falls. In this story, Tessa has been waiting around for Bryan forever and has decided to move on with her own life, but Bryan moves back to town after being hurt, and has now decided that he's ready, so let's go for it. And he's surprised when Tessa doesn't fall into his arms! This story is sweet and sexy at the same time. It has some twists and turns you won't see coming. This is another enjoyable book by Erin Nicholas.

In this sweet and sexy installment in the Sapphire Falls series a naughty virgin decides she's tired of waiting for the man of her dreams to notice her, only to have him decide she's the only woman he's ever wanted. Tessa has been a character on the sidelines of several of the earlier novels in the series and she truly stars in her own story, a strong, determined giving young woman who, ultimately will get HER way. Bryan put in a brief appearance as the injured triathlete who took over management of the local bar. Their story will warm you heart and probably heat up a few other parts.

One of my least favourite tropes

I found it disgusting that even though Bryan moved back to Sapphire Falls with the intention of being with Tessa, he was still sleeping with other women as recently as three months prior. That does not scream love to me. Not once did he feel shame at the sheer number of women he'd slept with while supposedly loving her from the moment he saw her. He was just happy to have all the s * x while still being her first and only. So selfish. I'm just so angry.

A fun book

Tess has been in love with Bryan for 22+ years. Tess begins her running adventures with Bryan’s inspirational blog. After Bryan suffered a partial spinal cord injury and returns home to Sapphire Falls, realizes Tess has always loved him, then he realizes he is losing her to her dreams of traveling the world while she runs toward her goals. HEA is a given at this point as Bryan understands her passions and that his are wrapped in her passions for life and adventure. Enjoy this wonderful book.

chasing her after she’d given up waiting

Love this book it was a book that made you think and showed that things don’t always come easily to people even if they originally think that something will never change. It shows that change is a part of life, and you can’t expect things to stay stagnant when. Life moves on whether you’re there to watch move or not. I would highly recommend this book. I hope you enjoy

Great storyline!

Tessa had loved Bryan since she was 5 years old and was now 30. After 22 years of unrequited love Tessa finally gave up on Bryan just as he was really starting to appreciate her. They each learned a lot about themselves and became the best individuals they could be before finally coming together.
