Lonely Planet: The world's leading travel guide publisher

Where To Go When, the ultimate trip planner for every month of the year, is a beautifully illustrated book that is both practical and inspiring. For every month of the year it presents 30 recommendations of destinations that are at their best during each month, whether due to their climate, or value or because there's a lot going on.

The suggestions feature every flavour of travel experience from culture-rich city breaks and tropical beach holidays to adventurous road trips and wildlife-watching expeditions. Every corner of the planet is covered so you'll find out when the best time to see mountain gorillas is or to go shopping in Paris.

The book is organised by month. At the start of each chapter a flowchart guides you through the options so readers can filter the recommendations according to their interests. Whether you're into beaches, trying the local specialities or backpacking off the beaten path, there will suggestions for you. Diagrams also depict the climate, value for money and family friendliness of each suggestion in the month.

Then Lonely Planet's authors explain in detail why each destination has been selected. The text describes the place and why it's special at that particular time. The destinations are illustrated by inspiring photographs and have a small infographic that shows the key reasons to go. Practical details make the first step of planning a trip easier.

Packed with facts, photos and new ideas for your next adventure, Where to Go When will inspire and interest anybody who loves travel.

OUR STORY
A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

Organized by the month, with great photography and broad appeal across age, interests, fitness and finances, this is a great inspirational travel guide that squarely addresses the primary question of where to go when.

Excelente.

This was a fun break in my reading. I used to have a lot of wanderlust in me, and this sparked some of that again. It also confirmed the time frame we were thinking of checking out the Northern Lights next year- and where!

Just a cool coffee table book :)

Note: I read the second edition.

One of my favourite books. I keep it beside my bed and consult it all the time, whenever a knew possible travel destination pops into my head and I want to know when would be the best time to go, or vice versa, if I feel I need a holiday or know when I have time off coming up and want to know where is best for that time. Yes, I can google these lists too, but I love having a tangible book for this and have been surprised by how much I have picked it up.

Lonely Planet's Where To Go When is full of unique and out of the way destinations, a few I've never even heard of! I did notice South Africa is mentioned twice for travel in September and November.

Were the editors running out of places to go? Haha!

Also, far flung countries like Australia and New Zealand are mentioned multiple times since they encompass so much territory and contain many out of the way, uncommon places to visit. There are handy flowcharts to help the confused traveler figure out what he/she is looking for in a destination, including what is expensive, good for families, ideal for drink, food and enriching one's mind, body, and soul.

Great guide for planning your bucket list of adventures or a spur of the moment trip!

secrtions are just wrong and poor quality control, for example:

Index says that Switzerland info on pages 15, 42, 99, 125 but there is nothing re. Switzerland on page 125
Page 83 has an x and y axis that features as one axis suggested trips that are cheaper arrayed to those more expensive - it lists a road trip eating pancakes in New Hampshire as "expensive but worth it" and greece, australia, an new zealand as "good value" on the cheaper end of the same x axis.

very poor editing = I do not trust the info

I'd started my own wonky hard-copy calendar thing trying to chart out best times to visit places I want to visit...and then I realized LP had done a lot of my work for me with this little gem. It does not comprehensively address best timing for all awesome options on this globe, but it is a great jumping off point to get ideas going!

Wonderful to browse through for all kinds of trip ideas, great and small. I love how the first sentence of each trip sums it up in a nutshell. I also like the introductory pages where you can compare weather, cost and so on for all ideas included in that month at a glance. Lonely Planet do this sort of thing so well.

This book has countless errors, and many missed opportunities to make it better and more accessible (which would increase its quality, not compromise it in the slightest). I actually wrote to LP to explain this and many of the errors and they understood, but recommend you do not purchase this book.

This was a fun book for vacation inspiration! I liked the way they organized each chapter by month and then had flow charts of different vacation vibes to help you pick a good location. Definitely more of a coffee table book than for detailed planning but I’d recommend checking it out to broaden your perspective on vacation destinations.

This is the 2nd printing and there are issues with it. You can enjoy the pictures and use it as a jumping off point to find out more about destinations, but if you read too closely, you’ll get frustrated by the poor editing.

Month by month best places to travel in the world and why. Not the usual “travel” book. Beautifully illustrated and succinct descriptions of the place and why to go there when they suggest.

- Natur & Tierwelt
- Herausforderung
- Abenteuer
- Preis-Leistung
- Kultur
- Rundreise
- Essen & Trinken
- Entspannung

beim vorgestellten Ziel ist. Man erfährt, warum man gerade in diesem Monat hinfahren sollte. Weiterführende Informationen muss man dann speziellen Reiseführern entnehmen.

Over the course of a year, the authors offer 300 destinations, with suggestions on when to visit and why it’s such a choice option, from cooler weather to fewer crowds to animal migrations. This is a book for travellers and those who just want to know more about the world, even if we don’t get on planes so often any more. Each entry includes icons to alert you to the type of trip, a “why now” explanation including itinerary suggestions, planning information, and other months to consider for that destination. I like that they suggest low-carbon travel options when appropriate, such as touring Canada via train. The endmatter includes an adequate index and a list of photo credits. My thanks to the Grand Forks (B.C.) and District Public Library for including this book in its adult nonfiction collection.

Sort of interesting different approach to finding out where to go next: when to go next first, then where.
I have used this book to get inspiration for a couple of trips now. The information is concise, therefore not very useful for detailed planning, but enough for directional purposes.

The only reason why I'm giving this book 3 stars is because I'm not entirely sure who this book is for. It feels like a travel guide for the very rich or the very adventurous. You either need to be down to hike a mountain in Switzerland or explore the national parks in deep southern China. Although the countries and states they suggest are awesome, I'm not sure this is for the typical traveler. The photos and descriptions are beautiful and very helpful. The layout was glorious and such eye candy. But overall I'm not sure this is the book I'd want to grab if I'm looking for suggestions.

How many times do you borrow a book from the library before realizing you need to buy it?

Organized by month, you can start by choosing when you want to travel and then checking the recommendations for that month (as well as those adjacent).

Select your destination based on weather, budget, length of time required, level of activity, etc. Each entry includes reasons why this is the best time of year to go; information for planning; and whether the emphasis is on wildlife/nature, adventure, cultural, food/drink, personal growth, etc.

Extremely helpful, and highly recommended!

Normally I object being told where to go when, I'll go where I please, thankyouverymuch. But this guide is a great starting point for local and world travel when you know when you can go but maybe not where. And it's stunningly beautiful. I have begun a ritual of reading the entries for the month that I am currently in and dreaming of other places to be. At some point, I will take some of these ideas and make them into real plans, but for now, I'm really enjoying this book.
