The author opens this book by introducing readers to what frugal is and why it’s so important to not only families, but to a variety of other groups. After all, states the author, the tips and suggestions contained in Frugal Family Fun can easily be used by churches, scout troupes, teachers and other group organizers. Right from the start Ms. Mawhinney had me hooked because the book is already promised to be a multi-purpose tool!
Every step is geared toward bonding together in a fun way. And, bonding together as a family or like-minded group builds stronger relationships and who doesn’t want that? The author’s suggestion of making the first activity fun by creating a list of ideas complete with interactive props along with a budget is excellent. This is a great way to get everyone onboard. It also provides a teachable moment with children about finances. There’s that multi-purpose aspect again!
There are ideas for every age group in this book. The author emphasizes the importance of getting all members of the group involved. There’s a generous section on taking special needs and challenges into consideration, which I found to be valuable.
From there, the author includes specific fun activities that are designed for specific purposes. Things like team-building, crafting, cooking, role-play, gardening, woodworking, stargazing, nature hiking, puppetry and so much more are included in great detail. There are things to do together outdoors or indoors, during the day or at night, and during any season of the year. In fact, this book is so packed with fun activities you’ll probably never hear those dreaded words, “there’s nothing to do” again. I love, love, love that the author devoted a full chapter to volunteering. It’s so important to make good stewards of our children as early as possible.
The author’s writing style is conversational, easy-going and engaging. She was definitely able to motivate me to try several of her ideas already! I highly recommend Frugal Family Fun to parents, teachers, caregivers and group leaders!
I just finished reading this wonderful book called Frugal Family Fun: The Ultimate Family Resource with Over 300 Budget Friendly Activities. 300 activities! Come on now; surely we can each find something to take away and be able to use with our families, right?
Frugal Family Fun contains ideas for any activity you can think of - indoor or outdoor, active or relaxing, educational, seasonal and holiday, and the list goes on.
I especially liked how the book guides you through making the decisions for family time as a family unit, and not as the parental unit. We are reminded to consider our family's unique make-up and needs, and consider how many activities we want to attempt. I suggest we start small and grow from there because shaking things up with a significant change can sometimes be difficult.
The great thing about the suggestions in the book Frugal Family Fun is just that - the ideas are budget-friendly. We don't have to spend a fortune on a family vacation to have a meaningful time and make special memories. Memories are made, and hearts are bonded over shared experiences and emotions.
Mawhinney provide a variety of suggestions for family activities for low cost. The first few chapters talk about why family fun does not have to be expensive and how the relationships between family members open up opportunities to try something different. There are activities for indoors and out, nighttime and daytime, seasonal, educational, and more. Her suggestions on how to make become part of the family normal routines was interesting.
The book is a life saver for all those parents who want to maximise family time with little or no expenditure.
There are numerous activities that can be utilised for different sitions. Critics might say that many have beenŕ out. I can only say that this book does not claim to be the only one of its kind. In fact, many of its suggestions and recommendations are valid and relevant. What really stands out is the way in which suggestions have been given.
Amanda is neither preachy nor rude when she shares her concerns about families not spending much time together. The language is simple, categorization of activities is well-laid out and content coverage is good. The activities are childfriendly and interesting. There are no jerks and jumps in the interview. The wroter has compiled a beautiful collect that can be used to enhance family ties and make the bonds stronger without creating a hole in the pockets.
To sum up, if you are looking for a guide to start or continue strengthening family bonds or invest in quality family time by being frugal. A must keep for inspirations.
P.S - Thank you Amanda for the wonderful ideas. I loved the book. My review is my honest opinion after reading the book.
