Okay, here's my issue and I'm putting it behind spoiler tags so don't click if you don't want this part of the story ruined for you.
We fans of DJ Heart love them for a reason, and Officer Cain works for me with that caveat.

I had a very hard time rating this book. I love reading books with hardcore BDSM, but there were some things that really bothered me in this story. Cain and his friends not stopping when Ethan used his safe word was really troubling. Not using condoms in a gang bang was another big no.
I liked the dynamics between Ethan and Cain. Although I found their scenes to be a little too intense they them both seemed to enjoy them.

This was not for me. This was very cold, full of humiliation kink bordering on abuse, with a side of PWP. I hoped for some character growth when Cain ignored Ethan safe wording, but no. It didn’t happen. I like my kink with a lot of heart. This had none, these two barely spoke to each other on page.

I love BDSM but this book had too many red flags for me to enjoy it for all the smutty kink it was. While they may have eventually established a supposed comfortable middle ground for themselves, Ethan repeatedly had concerns for his own safety and pondered his lack of trust in Cain, yet he brushed them off thinking he could just tell Cain to ease off. The issue is with their size and power difference, he wasn't able to. He never could. This was never really addressed, even to the end.
Every time Ethan hesitated, Cain made him feel worthless, as if safewording would disappoint Cain. This doesn't feel healthy at all. And don't even get me started on the biggest red flag, which was ignoring the safe word completely and even gagging him after he safeworded.
On that note, although the "ball in hand" safe word appeared a few times for scenarios when he couldn't talk, there were way MORE times where Ethan was coerced into a position where he couldn't speak due to a blow job/other reasons, yet he wasn't provided the ball or another way to safe word.
And it's laughable that Cain thought he would be worthy of the opportunity to play without safe words. He didn't even check on Ethan's condition when he expressed that he was in so much pain that he would rather forgo the orgasm he was promised if he could put up with the pain. Which brings me to another red flag: Ethan safeworded and Cain uses that opportunity to ask Ethan to keep going in exchange for an orgasm. Pretty sure that's not the right way to go when your partner safewords and that's not a healthy reward system to encourage your partner to ignore their own comfort level and safewording point.
One more issue I had was when Cain had a bad day at work and was super angry: he asked Ethan for a session and wanted to go extra hard, which had Ethan hesitating because Cain's normal was already pushing his limit, but he let him anyway. I don't think it's a good idea to agree to let a violent dom go even harder just cuz they're angry... but... that's just me? Shrugs.
Two stars cuz it was hot and kinky pwp for sure, but no more. And I know I've been hating on Cain this whole time but Ethan wasn't even likable either, cuz he basically only liked Cain for what he could give him physically and how he looked in his uniform. I lost respect for him when he so easily allowed Cain back into his life.

I have to say that I did not enjoy this book. I don't like humiliation and Officer Cain seemed to think that this was the main ingredient in their relationship. I felt that Ethan didn't seem to know what he wanted or how far he should go and Cain was a very self-centred dom. He didn't seem to understand that a good relationship is a two way affair. It all seemed to be about him and what he wanted - Ethan was just there for his use only.
I ended up skimming the 2nd half of the book - I wanted to know what happened but I didn't want to read about such an abusive relationship.
I will read more by this author but I don't think that I want to know anything else about Cain.

I’m fast becoming a DJ Heart fan and this is one of his best. Not that there’s anything like a plot, but who needs a plot when the whole thing is dripping with such eroticism? Not only the sex btw, which is hot enough, but whenever one of the character's names appears on the page.
Heart created two fascinating MCs, each of them walks such a fine line that anything can happen at any time, which keeps the events exiting and the Kindle clicking. A Top, who’s a cannon loose enough that we never know whether to believe him or not, and a naive sub, who’s either intuitive enough to know what he’s getting himself into, or just plain dumb. Whichever way it goes, the outcome always smokes.
This book can be viewed as a counterpart to Heart’s, ‘Dominated by the Jock’, but as told by the sub. Read it when in need of a guilty pleasure.

I really liked this. I would definitely categorize it as heavy BDSM. There was plenty of muscles and leather, and a cocky, confident, dominant MC in Officer Cain-- all to be expected from this author. Ethan was inexperienced with kink, but he loved most of what Cain did.

A little too close to non-con for my taste
Some of the episodes/scenes in this compilation were very hot, but I found that all too often, Cain pushed Ethan too far too fast and repeatedly failed to get Ethan's consent. Cain never sat down with Ethan to go over limits a single time, he merely came up with an idea and went with it until he went too far.
It wasn't explicitly stated, but I very much got the impression that Cain was new to having a sub and had never had the experience of needing to communicate thoroughly before being with Ethan.
I've read many of DJ and Brett's joint works so I knew going in that there would be rough sex, but I was surprised at how close I felt that Cain came to abuse, if not rape (in one case). This was a story of two young men who practiced hardcore BDSM without any formal training or limits. The dom Cain had a network of friends who played the same way. Cain got a thrill out of trying to push sub Ethan. I was surprised that Ethan gave Cain a second chance after not respecting his safeword. At least Cain did redeemed himself over time. With all of his crazy scenes, he would probably push 18 yr old Ethan into anal prolapse by age 30. It wasn't cool that the guys in the gangbang scene didn't use condoms and very disappointing that Cain and Ethan didn't require it.
