'Ready, Steady, Go!' is grounded in realism, its tenets firmly practical, readily implementable and, as far as I can tell from my own experience in Banking, entirely valid. No ‘corporate gas’ or philosophical murmurings here. Ready, Steady, Go! is an illusion-breaker, very down-to-earth, and reads like genuine advice being given by an older, wiser professional to his juniors.

In short, they won’t teach you this in B-school. Or in corporate trainings, motivational seminars, personality development classes, spiritual meditation sessions and so on.

Ready is the first section, and deals with helpful tips for making the transition from academics to corporate life. From dress codes to the importance of maintaining a clean desk, from managing your immediate superior to minding your body language, this part of the book tries to inject a healthy dose of reality into the lives of young white-collar employees.

Steady, the second section, deals with the pointers for making a mid-level employee able to maintain his standing and continue to make forward progress up the career ladder. The importance of keeping your personal and office lives separate, of being not only working hard, but being seen to do so, of needing to always keep your game face on, is consistently emphasised here.

Go! Is the final section of the book, and tries to take the reader through the essential characteristics for rising above the mid-level and breaking into upper management. Here Mr. Mehra speaks about the importance of being known to your superiors, focussing on return on investment, creating a positive work environment, embracing the solitude that comes with being at the top of the corporate pyramid.

Ready, Steady, Go! has the potential to be an invaluable tool for those of us in the second category. It is crisply written – each point gets not more than three to five pages – and clearly expressed. Anecdotes appear to be realistic and as I have said before, the author has avoided coming across as a empty talker.

Some of the suggestions in the book will appear trivial – waking up on time, organising your calendar, embracing being ‘boring’ – but far too many people seem ignorant of them.

Perhaps a weakness of the book could be it’s orientation towards the non-creative industries; the inherent biases towards outward appearances in firms operating in advertising and media-related industries would make Ready, Steady, Go! rather out-of-place over there.

If the traversing the corporate maze is the classic Hero's Journey then Deepak Mehra's Ready Steady Go is the wise man that guides you on the way. If you imagine yourself to be Luke Skywalker then Ready Steady Go is Yoda :) That's the easiest way to describe this book to youngsters just entering the corporate world.

The book is divided into 3 Logical sections (Ready, Steady and Go) each of which is oriented towards a particular phase in a persons career. The situations and problems addressed in the book are such that they will be recognised by everybody. And the thing about such situations is that you don't get much leeway to make many mistakes. This is where the book is pure gold, what years of college and business school cannot teach you this book manages to do in a couple of hundred pages.

For those of us wishing for a mentor, look no further this book is for you. Buy it, your future professional self will thank you for it. The ROI of this book is massive

My advice on how to approach this book is to reach through it once just to a get a sense of things and then keep coming back to the book often. Each situation or advice is not more 2 to 3 pages but these are things that need to be learned and relearned until they become habit.

In Ready, Steady, Go!, Deepak Mehra presents key lessons to help the reader get the most out of his/her career. Deepak has enjoyed a very successful career that spans several countries and many international organizations, and in the process has worked with (and observed) other examples of great success in the workplace, and also examples of highly skilled individuals who don't achieve their true career potential. From these experiences, Deepak has distilled the most important themes and organized them into fifty nine highly accessible and practical rules to follow in order to achieve success. The rules are organized into three career stages (preparation, protection and propulsion) and a self-assessment test is provided at the onset to help the reader self-evaluate.
The book is very enjoyable to read and is written in a clear instructive language that doesn't try to compete with the content. The rules are very practical and are not difficult for anyone to learn and follow. More importantly, although these rules are designed to benefit the reader (or practitioner), they are founded on positive values such as honesty, professionalism, goodness, etc. so they will make the reader a more positive and compassionate presence in his/her environment.
I have personally followed many of these rules in several settings. They served me very well in the corporate environment. I entered that world with an excellent academic training and high performance potential, but I was hindering my own growth by making mistakes and 'misbehaving'. In other words, I was exactly the type of person Deepak describes in the book! By enhancing my softer skills and learning these rules, I was able to flourish and really see my career take off. Recently, I left the corporate world and returned to academia. I continued to follow the rules as they are second nature by now; and I learned that they work in academia just as well as they do in the corporate world (if not better, since fewer academics follow them). I am getting much more out of the academic environment than I ever did before and I have my own behavior to thank for it! In fact, as I continue to practice the rules and contemplate them deeply, I am constantly learning how to adapt them to all sorts of environments, including the personal (such as marriage and family), and they work very well in those settings too.
In summary, I truly believe that this is a must-read book regardless of the stage of life are in in or the type of work/study/career you are pursuing.

When I start reading the book, I got hooked to it from the first chapter itself. I finished reading it in 3 days and I my first feeling was that, why I did not read this book earlier. The book has shocked me multiple times and broken some of the established belief about corporate rules/cultures.

The book has 59 chapters and each chapter presents you with an unique learning and experience. My suggestion is that please read the entire book word by word and do not skip any chapter even if you feel you are aware of the content or have read it before.

The book targets college graduate who want to start the journey into corporate word, but I am not a student and I have spent enough years in corporate life and after reading the book I understand that why Deepak Mehra (the Author) wants you to avoid common traps and mistake. if you have spent 5+ years working then this books is strongly recommended for you.

Full credit to Deepak Mehra who has penned down this book in a very clear and crisp language, the author deserve to be applauded for showing his commitment to guide the current and Future corporate executives.

I am confident that once you grab this book, you will not leave it without finishing it and once you finish the book, you will like to read few chapters again and again to re-enforce the learning.

VERDICT:

Precise and to the point, the author has targeted the essence of career selection to the point of its nurturing and sustenance. Success would simply rest at your door!

REVIEW:

The cover of the book is self explanatory, giving a glimpse of what is there in the book. The language is wonderful and easy to read keeping one glued to the serious subject dealt in. The author has wonderfully expressed the true reality and mentioned how one can be successful in one’s career.

Career making and breaking is solely dependent on oneself but one needs to be guided however intelligent one is. Today’s education definitely helps us to scale heights but the experience one needs to handle varied situations is what one requires and that is what is explicitly shown by Deepak Mehra in his wonderful book.

The book is quite explanatory in nature and fantastic to read. although i wonder how it could be beneficial to the not well-to-do individuals. The price of the book is fixed quite high which seems it is targeted at only the elite group. Nevertheless the book is doing a wonderful job in revealing certain pearls of wisdom.

Corporate world is like a maze. To enter is sometimes easy, sometimes difficult. However, once you are in it, the maze will get more and more complicated and only the lucky few are able to fathom a solution. Hard work and dedication is not always adequate to climb the corporate ladder. Once you are in it, the process seems to be a mirage for most.
Deepak Mehra comes up with a set of 59 fast track ways to crack the invisible code. The book is indeed helpful to the stress laden employees. The solution comes in three stages. 1. Ready- To prepare;2. Steady- To protect and 3. Go- To propel.
The book starts with a self-assessment sheet to evaluate if you are ready to climb the ladder. Right from sound sleep to smart handling of your boss, author provides a-z of the corporate world. The book is very motivational. The book is everything that a self help book should be.
The book is highly recommended for the white collar slaves of the corporate world, to break free and attain the deserved.

A very nice and rewarding book that I enjoyed reading in a couple of hours
Our behavior and attitude in a corporate environment are not always matching with the ones gathered during the college years. This is what this book is about. It clearly highlights basic but important skills we have to work on to have the control of our career and to manage the different professional environment aspects: Work, Boss, Colleagues,…
I learned a lot with this book, how to carry ourselves with a “smart formal personality” while heading to office. Our attitudes our behaviors could be the most important things to take our career a step further.

Very well written and presented book, with practical advice on how to conduct yourself in the corporate sector.

Deepak has written this book from the wealth of experience he has gained over the last 25 years as a banker, teacher and coach; and also as a father. Which makes a lot of difference - it is not written from mere research but from experience and practice.

A must read for everyone from students to executives at any stage in their career. It will enrich their knowledge towards the path of success, in its real terms!

Recommending this book is hard. 2 stars are too many for it. 1 would have been less.

If you are starting out in a job for the first time, this book is a good read. But again there is some stuff in it which is archaic and represents old ways of thinking that it might cause more harm than good. But most of it is pretty solid advice.

I can’t go on details and tell which goes where. I guess you will have to figure out yourself. Then why even read? Why not just figure out in your job yourself.

Meh.
