Daily Candy A to Z is a fun and quirky book with very cute illlustrations. The tips are somewhat helpful, but not at all practical. It was a fun read but it's not something I would apply to my daily life religiously. Some tips are must knows but it is probably important to point them out.
Here are some stuff I have learned: A- Appearance Don't wear dirty clothes to the gym. (because I did not know this already) B- Brain Candy Eery is alternate spelling to eerie. C- Charm Charm in action..if all else fails, drink heavily. D- Do gooding Do random acts of kindness (some examples are given) E- Edibles Sure fire sign your diet will fail: you're allowed to eat bacon (but everybody loves bacon!) F- Fundamentals Bad drivers deserve to be shot (maybe that's going too far, but I might flip them off) G- Girls& Guys Girls Guys Scarlet Red Magenta Red Rose Red Ruby Red H- Home When short of spackle, fill nail holes with colgate I- Intimacy If guy gives you carnations, DUMP his sorry ass J-Jet setting No tracksuits ever (would look hideous in pictures) K- Kin Let it go if your sister kills your goldfish. L- Luxury Satin sheets are gaudy. M- Money "If you don't have any, you want some. If you have some, you want more. And if you have more, you're probably living in perpetual fear that people are using you to get at it." N- Never "Never say never." O- Offspring "Rock-a-bye baby, asleep on my lap. Since you were born, my skin looks like crap." P- Party "What a friend we have in cheeses." (But not all people like cheese?) Q- Quandaries "You've got questions, Dailycandy's got answers" R- Ritual' "Sometimes everyday behavior just needs a simple tweak to turn it into a beautiful ritual." S- Score "Joy comes in many forms." T- Taking moment "CRASH A PARTY." (lets enjoy that free food!) U- Upheaval When feeling bitchy, call your mother. V- Vice "bad behavior gets remembered." W- Work When working at home, do not eat everything in the fridge. X- X "Letting go is a part of living." Y- Yikes If your poop makes the toilet explode, and your boyfriend helps you out with a plunger, complains but helps anyway, he is a keeper. Z- Zeitgeist "Keep doing what you're doing."
Even though the copyright of this book is 2002, it is still very current and useful to today's life. I loved the often tongue-in-cheek humor. It was definitely a self-help and a "feel good" book. It was a nice break from some of the dramatic longer books I have been reading. It would still make a great gift. I plan to pass this on to my daughter who is nearly 30 years old. Enjoy! I only wish the website was still current.
This book is sweet, and the illustrations are adorable. I read a third of it a night and learned a little about how to throw a party, felt relieved a lot for not being single anymore, also felt guilty a little for not caring about fashion and trends.
Interesting concepts and ideas and random facts and tidbits to get your morning thoughts flowing, but the format is all over the place and it is presented in a non-consecutive manner and can be difficult to follow at times.
Pure nostalgia for me. Loved the Daily Candy emails (RIP!) and this book brings that vibe in a timeless way. I love the illustrations and the tone of the book. One of my favorites!
This book is dated, but I love the creative play on words and how these women built a hugely successful newsletter business called Daily Candy. It's not a life changing read but it does indeed show the power of words. You'll enjoy it if you're a creative who loves words. Nina
I was a bit wary of picking up this book - I used to get quite a lot of Daily Candy subscriptions, but ended up cancelling them all as they just seemed to scream 'buy more stuff you really don't need' and I didn't need that temptation. But the book was just as pretty as the emails - as with the online version, the best thing about the book is the lovely illustrations - so I started reading. And was pleasantly surprised. This is not a book about buying things (not that there is anything wrong with that). Rather, it is a book that deals with leading an interesting life, with some rather deep and meaningful ideas hiding among the humour and candy-floss lightness. A fun read that provided some inspiration, you could do a lot worse than spend an afternoon with a copy of this book.
This book is a gift from Singapore, based on the American daily dose of emails for women all over the world. It offers information on the latest gadgets, sweet things to browse online, little girly things, tips and restaurants. Simply everything! Well you get what I mean.
Then they decide to put them all into one A to Z book. It's cute - like what's bitchy and what's allowed. It's a nice book, but doesnt apply to people outside US much.
Read it when you need to spice up your life a lil bit.
I had never heard of the website DailyCandy at all until I picked up this book. The book is full of great tidbits, little articles, mini quiz-like pages, and so much more. Every day I looked forward to reading the next letter of the alphabet to see what topic we would be looking at and was excited to see the types of things in the section.
The illustrations are adorable and full of colour. Each article is short so you can read a little at a time and not feel like you need to recap the previous section.
It's a quick and witty read for fun and sassy gals!
Of course, I realized when I bought this book that it wouldn’t be full of highly helpful tips, but I was surprised to see that it did have some practical advice mixed in with humor. I liked that the authors didn’t tell readers to make themselves into total twits to “land a man”, or to tolerate more than they should. It was a humorous book and I enjoyed reading it.
This book has tips and advice on just about everything. Some sections are obvious with things you may already know, but other items will prove helpful. The layout and illustrations are cute and magazine-like. It might not be something I’ll reread or keep in my library, but the book was a fast read and I was able to gain ideas from it.
Don't have a lot of time ? Would like to be a teensy weensy bit up to date ? This is very LITE chic lit: funny, informative, social commentary (focused on girl stuff) in an A - Z format. a fun read ! accompanies the website : dailycandy.com
