Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.
Dr. John Watson, an Afghan war veteran returns to London owing to his injuries. Now with very less money he had, he finds living in a hotel expensive and wants to get a room at a reasonable price. And here comes our detective with whom Watson rooms at 221 B Baker street. And then starts the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It starts with "Study in Scarlet" and ends with the death of Sherlock in "The Final Problem". Volume 1 consists of 2 novels and 23 short stories out of a total of 4 novels and 56 short stories. I am reading this book after watching "Sherlock". If you are a complete newbie to Sherlock Holmes franchise then you will find yourself reading one of the best fiction novel ever written. But If you had watched the Sherlock before, you may find it less interesting but on the whole, it is worth reading.
