Rate this book
Do Your Longings Have You Going Around in Circles?

You vowed to never repeat the same mistakes, yet here you are again, right where you started. What is it that keeps drawing you back? In this six-session video-based study (DVD/digital video sold separately), Sheila Walsh shows it is our longings that often lead us into such traps. She draws on her own experiences and the life of King David to reveal that all our longings are rooted in a need for God—and nothing else will satisfy when it comes to filling that void.

This study guide accompanies both the 6-part DVD/videos and the book with the same title. I accessed the videos via Study Gateway which is associated with Harper Collins Christian publishing.

The videos were excellent quality. Ranging from 17 to 22 minutes Sheila Walsh identified a particular longing that we all possess whether we're a believer or not. The six featured in the videos were:

1. Longing to be Chosen
2. Longing for Protection
3. Longing for Control
4. Longing for Happiness
5. Longing for God's Grace
6. Longing for God Alone

This is a study directed towards women but I was drawn to it because I'd recently heard Sheila speak at my church and thought she was a very anointed preacher and this study focused on the life of King David. I'm presently spending a lot of time in the Psalms and thought this would be a good study to add to my time in the Psalms.

And I wasn't disappointed. Through personal reflection, Sheila uses the life of David to demonstrate these longings.

Each of the six sessions is broken into 2 sections: a study of the video and a separate study of the book. The book covers more longings than the six in the videos. The video questions are written on the basis that your working through them in a group, however, I did them as an individual. I expect this would be an excellent study to work through in a small group. There is a practical exercise to do each week which is comprehensive with the intent each person would report back to the group the following week.

There is also a separate exercise at the end of the "book" section that has you reflect on one of David's Psalms. I found this a very useful way of finishing each session.

All of the questions are challenging and thought-provoking. Sheila also makes reference to a number of other commentators like Dallas Willard, Eugene Peterson and Ruth Haley Barton that I very much appreciated.

This is an excellent study that I recommend highly.
