Luitenant-kolonel de Maumort
In 1940, terwijl zijn geliefde kasteel bezet wordt door de nazi’s, begint de zeventigjarige Bertrand de Maumort, aristocraat, soldaat en intellectueel, aan zijn memoires. Hij beschrijft zijn vroege jeugd, zijn erotische ervaringen op een katholieke kostschool, zijn verblijf in Parijs bij oom Éric, een eminent geleerde op wiens zondagse ontvangsten hij beroemdheden als Renan, Taine, Toergenjev, Daudet en Pasteur ontmoette, zijn relatie met de prachtige creool Doudou, zijn mislukte huwelijk met een charmant maar zeer conventioneel burgermeisje, zijn diensttijd in Marokko en zijn deelname aan de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Terwijl Maumort over zijn leven vertelt, verraadt hij onbewust zijn vooroordelen, illusies en morele tekortkomingen.

Trained as a paleographer and archivist, Martin du Gard brought to his works a spirit of objectivity and a scrupulous regard for details. For his concern with documentation and with the relationship of social reality to individual development, he has been linked with the realist and naturalist traditions of the 19th century. His major work was Les Thibault, a roman fleuve about the Thibault family, originally published as a series of eight novels. The story follows the fortunes of the two Thibault brothers, Antoine and Jacques, from their prosperous bourgeois upbringing, through the First World War, to their deaths. He also wrote a novel, Jean Barois, set in the historical context of the Dreyfus Affair.
During the Second World war he resided in Nice, where he prepared a novel, which remained unfinished (Souvenirs du lieutenant-colonel de Maumort); an English-language translation of this unfinished novel was published in 2000.

Though Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort was left incomplete at Roger Martin Du Gard’s death in 1958, the novel doesn’t feel shapeless or cut short, at least not unreadably so. It’s a fictional autobiography and so, unfinished, it just reads like a memoir focused on the author’s childhood and youth, with only glimpses of his adulthood, as in the genre Russians call the detstvo.
It also helps that the fragmentary material (one-third of the volume, 250 or so pages) is very, very good: there’s the story, as subtle as something from Proust though not as ornate, of Maumort’s sister’s late marriage and ambivalent adoptive motherhood; a series of exuberant letters, in a style of late Nietzschean prestissimo, describing le Perche in the months after liberation, the result of Martin Du Gard’s attempt to give part of Maumort’s story an epistolary form; and a collection of aphorisms and microessays on diverse subjects, cahiers written partly in the voice of Maumort (his masters are Montaigne and Emerson, he resembles Tocqueville and Monsieur Teste) and partly in the voice of Martin Du Gard himself (a major influence on fellow Nobelist Camus).
That said, it is a bummer we don’t have a full treatment of Maumort’s adulthood, particularly his military career. I’m in the “target audience." I love French history, I’m fascinated by the subcultures of professional officers and long-service regulars (especially in colonial postings), and I would happily devour what Martin Du Gard planned Parts 4, 5, and 6 to be: the reflections of a philosophic soldier, born during the Prussian war, a veteran of the Great War, finally an old man living in his library while new Germans occupy the rest of his chateau. An intelligent officer, an aristocratic liberal who observed the Dreyfus Affair up close and was disgusted by what he saw, but who after a long leave decided to remain in the army, served a decade in Morocco under Lyautey followed by four years in the trenches.
Maumort did a lot of thinking in Morocco. The history of his reflections on any issue or relationship always has its Saharan phase – how a thing looked to him during his period of lonesome desert outposts. The dearth of those pages sparked a desire for the landscape and I took down my copy of The Sword and the Cross, Fergus Fleming’s biography of Colonel Henri Laperrine, founder of the Algerian camel cavalry, the Méharistes Sahariennes, who, dying next to his downed plane in 1920, awaiting a search party he knew would be too late, delivered these cinematic last words: "People think they know the desert. People think I know it. Nobody really knows it. I have crossed the Sahara ten times and I will stay here."
I also re-opened and resolved to finish reading the journals of a third French stoic meditating in the wilderness, Philippe Régis de Trobriand’s Military Life in Dakota (Vie militaire dans le Dakota, notes et souvenirs 1867–1869). What an interesting figure! Trobriand was the son of an old military family who avoided the army for political reasons (like Chateaubriand his father was a Legitimist who refused to serve Louis Philippe). After studying law, he moved to New York City, where he charmed high society, married an heiress aunt of Edith Wharton’s, published two novels, founded a literary review and edited a newspaper, the Courrier des Etats-Unis. He studied painting in Italy for a while but was back in the US at the outbreak of its civil war. He began his career as the colonel of the 55th New York Volunteer Infantry, a regiment of French immigrants who dubbed themselves the Gardes de Lafayette. He was mentioned in dispatches from Gettysburg, where his brigade had held steady in the maelstrom of the Wheatfield, on the second day, and the end of the war found him a general of division. He remained in the US Army a further fifteen years, three of them commanding forts on the Great Plains, and retired to New Orleans, where he wrote, painted, and cultivated roses.

Het hoofdstuk "De verdrinking" is als aparte novelle uitgegeven. Door de ongelooflijk mooie stijl van dit verhaal en door het prachtige "De Thibaults", verwachtte ik zeer veel van Luitenant-kolonel De Maumort. Té veel, denk ik. Het blijft nog altijd prachtig, maar ik vind het zo jammer dat het op het einde een samenraapsel is geworden van wat men nog heeft gevonden.
Dat is wel vaker een probleem bij romans die onafgewerkt zijn gebleven.
Ook bij 'De dode zielen' van Gogol heb je dat. En bij 'Kater Murr'.

Intrigued by the blurb ("A cross between Á la recherche du temps perdu and the Essais of Montaigne"), I bought this book in 1999 when it was first published in the US, but didn't read it until three years ago. Roger Martin du Gard — who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1937 for a book I'd never heard of — recreates a mysterious, magnificent life, a faux-memoir by Bertrand de Maumort, an aristocrat born in 1870, who survives up through the German occupation in 1940. This huge book was never quite completed, it exists in several large chunks, but it doesn't feel "unfinished" — if anything, its form is redolent of Modernism. Highly recommended for anyone with historical imagination, especially anyone interested in French literature. Truly a forgotten classic.

In mijn review van "Kijken door een sleutelgat; dagboeken en herinneringen" van Roger Martin du Gard (hieronder: RMG) uitte ik, behalve voor dit boek en de schrijver ervan, mede mijn waardering voor Anneke Alderlieste, pleitbezorgster voor en vertaalster van het werk van RMG. Die waardering is tijdens het lezen van "Luitenant-kolonel de Maumort", RMG’s laatste en onvoltooid gebleven boek, alleen maar toegenomen. Het kan niet anders of Alderlieste heeft buitengewoon veel zorg aan die vertaling besteed, en bovendien wordt er door haar ‘Nawoord en verantwoording’ nog het nodige toegevoegd aan het begrip van het rijke edoch complexe geheel dat Uitgeverij Meulenhoff het lezerspubliek voorschotelt in deze letterlijk vuistdikke pil. Vermeldenswaard is wat mij betreft zeker ook nog het feit dat Alderlieste de prachtige, stijlvolle foto heeft gemaakt die het stofomslag van het boek siert, een opname van RMG’s landgoed Le Tertre.
Lezers die aan "Luitenant-kolonel de Maumort" willen beginnen zonder kennis te hebben genomen van hetgeen over deze roman en de schrijver naar voren komt uit RMG’s dagboeken en herinneringen, doen er wellicht goed aan Alderliestes nawoord en verantwoording als eerste te lezen, als voorwoord. Ikzelf was tijdens het lezen van de ruim duizend bladzijden die eraan voorafgaan nog ronduit nieuwsgierig wat daardoor aan mijn begrip van het boek zou worden toegevoegd, en werd daarin allerminst teleurgesteld.
Zoals gezegd, RMG’s onvoltooid gebleven werk vormt een rijk en complex geheel. Die complexiteit zit ‘m in een grote diversiteit aan thema’s, alsmede natuurlijk in het feit dat de roman niet ‘af’ is en dat uit brieven en vooral dossiers moet worden opgemaakt hoe het complete werk er ongeveer uit zou hebben kunnen zien, en zit ‘m zeker ook in de bijna permanente dreiging als lezer protagonist Bertrand de Maumort (1870-1950, maar oorspronkelijk was sprake van een ander geboortejaar) en de auteur RMG (1881-1958) met elkaar te verwarren. Hun beider (fictieve respectievelijk reële) levens vertonen namelijk nogal wat parallellen, zowel in bepaalde feitelijke omstandigheden als op het punt van met name gedachtegoed en mens- en wereldbeeld. De persoon van de schrijver dringt zich bij tijd en wijle nadrukkelijk op aan de persoon van de protagonist, waarbij de tweede lijkt te fungeren als spreekbuis voor de eerste.
Het gegeven dat de roman "Luitenant-kolonel de Maumort" als zodanig onvoltooid is gebleven, overigens geheel conform RMG’s verwachting, valt vanzelfsprekend ernstig te betreuren. De inhoud ervan is in alle opzichten boeiend en indrukwekkend, en de auteur heeft het allemaal helder en fraai verwoord (hetgeen in de Nederlandse vertaling overeind is gebleven). Om een beeldspraak van RMG zelf te gebruiken: de saus waarmee de haas wordt opgediend, spoort alleszins met de kwaliteit van het vlees. Anderzijds heeft het ook wel wat, om de geenszins voltooide kathedraal van de luitenant-kolonel waar te nemen op de bouwplaats, te midden van grote hoeveelheden materieel en materiaal die nog aan de constructie zouden hebben moeten bijdragen. Lezers kunnen proberen zich een beeld te vormen van de delen (hoofdstukken) die nog ontbreken en van de betekenis daarvan in het geheel van het werk – zoals ook de charme en de aantrekkingskracht van een ruïne niet onder hoeven te doen voor die van iets wat volledig is gerestaureerd.
Wat nu spreekt mij inhoudelijk het meest aan in het onderhavige boek? Ik beperk me tot een paar punten, en wil dan om te beginnen de context noemen die de reeds afzonderlijk gepubliceerde novelle "De verdrinking" hier krijgt (de, van begin tot eind zeer overtuigende, tekst zelf is opgenomen als hoofdstuk XIII, pp. 412-476). Waar het ontbreken van iedere context in sommige reviews als manco is aangemerkt, worden de lezers in kwestie desgewenst alsnog royaal op hun wenken bediend.
Zeer gecharmeerd ben ik voorts, in feite gaat het hier om een van mijn stokpaardjes, van de antidogmatische instelling waarvan de luitenant-kolonel en/of diens schepper keer op keer getuigen en die ik met behulp van tal van citaten zou kunnen illustreren, zoals: “Bij een dogmatische geest denk ik altijd aan een kompas waarvan de naald is blijven steken…” (p. 736). Of: “(…) mijn hersenen zitten dusdanig in elkaar dat ik geen behoefte heb aan zekerheid. De kwade fee heeft die vloek niet boven mijn wieg uitgesproken. Een nogal uitzonderlijke buitenkans. Ik bezit het privilege (…) me op mijn gemak te voelen te midden van gissingen, tegenstrijdigheden, gebrek aan samenhang. (…) Ik leef in een sfeer van twijfel. Niets is simpel of helder. Je kunt nooit ergens zeker van zijn” (p. 772). En: “Denken is het tegenovergestelde van geloven; nadenken is in de eerste plaats verwerpen wat we meteen geneigd zouden zijn als onomstotelijk te zien; nadenken is in de eerste plaats ontkennen” (p. 1009). Het hele boek -roman, brieven, dossiers- kan worden gelezen als een ode aan de twijfel. Daarbij gaat het misschien niet eens zozeer om existentiële twijfel, als wel om de noodzaak, de betekenis, de rol van twijfel in wetenschap en samenleving. Het boek laat zich lezen als een pleidooi voor de kritische rede, voor de ratio. Hier en daar lijkt wel of Karl Popper himself al even voorzichtig om de hoek komt kijken.
Aldus leren we protagonist en auteur tot op zekere hoogte kennen als verlichte geesten, telkenmale getuigend van een sterke neiging tot nuanceren. Niet altijd, overigens. Men hoeft niet erg feministisch te zijn om een aantal passages te ontdekken die in onze tijd als uiterst vrouwonvriendelijk overkomen, en over boeren lezen we zelfs het volgende: “En ik haat de boer (…). Hij mag dan het zout der aarde en de kracht van de natie zijn, maar zijn ondeugden vormen een onoverkomelijk gebrek. Zijn deugd, zijn boerendeugd, die heilzame deugden waar de literatuur de lof van zingt omdat ze verzonnen zijn, ben ik maar heel zelden tegengekomen. In geen enkele andere klasse is het individu zo lomp, zo egoïstisch, zo schandelijk berekenend, zo sluw, achterbaks, stiekem, en weerzinwekkend slecht (…)” (p. 999). Dat kunnen, in Nederland in de zomer van 2022, de boeren van de Farmers Defence Force in hun zak steken.
Overigens heeft, in de tweede paragraaf (‘Maumort en de nazi’s’) van hoofdstuk XXII, een van de Duitsers die in de oorlog het landgoed van de luitenant-kolonel in beslag namen, ook ons als Goodreads-participanten nog wat interessants te melden. Deze Weissmüller beschouwt lezen als ‘een van de meest funeste hedendaagse gewoonten, een van de onzaligste erfenissen van de bourgeoisie, een sociale plaag die op dezelfde wijze bestreden zou moeten worden als alcoholisme…’ (p. 748). Proost, zullen we dan maar zeggen, en een volgend boek openslaan.

Overigens heeft, in de tweede paragraaf (‘Maumort en de nazi’s’) van hoofdstuk XXII, een van de Duitsers die in de oorlog het landgoed van de luitenant-kolonel in beslag namen, ook ons als Goodreads-participanten nog wat interessants te melden. Deze Weissmüller beschouwt lezen als ‘een van de meest funeste hedendaagse gewoonten, een van de onzaligste erfenissen van de bourgeoisie, een sociale plaag die op dezelfde wijze bestreden zou moeten worden als alcoholisme…’ (p. 748). Proost, zullen we dan maar zeggen, en een volgend boek openslaan.

My favorite read of 2025 was this unfinished novel. It's a fictional memoir of a French military officer, someone who is simultaneously reactionary and aristocratic and humanist and republican-patriotic (in the French-Napoleonic fashion). As a narrator he has a great voice and provides us with perfectly drawn Tolstoyan scenes of his early days and education. The early part of his life is completed, so we get a lot of detail of his youth and really get to know him at his origin. But as he grows up and joins the French army on its colonial mission in North Africa, the writing becomes more sketchy and zoomed-out. We also get letters from Maumort mixed in with the diaristic narration, which suits his distance from France. And then when he comes back, appparently to face some kind of rival (a Naphta-esque Marxist of some kind, it seems), it's just fragmented notes; a few paragraph-long summaries of Maumort's thoughts on certain issues that were intended to be the focus of the final conflict with this rival character. Altogether, it all kind of worked for me, and even leaving aside the incomplete sections, I loved the completed part, which struck me as something like Proust crossed with Tolstoy. Strongly underappreciated and underread work.

Het onafgewerkte epos van Roger Martin du Gard, hij stierf voor het af was. Desondanks toch gepubliceerd.
Het meesterwerk is een fictieve biografie van Bertrand de Maumort. Hij schrijft zijn memoires op het landgoed Le Saillant waar hij opgegroeid is terwijl dit bezet is door de vijand, de Duitsers tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog. Hij zit er gevangen in zijn eigen huis.
Bertrand groeit op met zijn zus Henriëtte, 9 jaar ouder dan hij en zijn vader. Zijn moeder is overleden tijdens zijn geboorte, iets wat zijn vader hem onbewust verwijt. Vader is afstandelijk en hij wordt door zijn zus opgevoed. Hij krijgt thuisonderwijs van een pastoor. Ergens rond zijn 11de of 12de komt een neef van hem, Guy op het landgoed wonen. De jongen is ziekelijk en het leven op het platteland zou hem goed moeten doen. Tegelijk met Guy komt er een nieuwe leraar, een zekere Xavier om het lesgeven over te nemen. Xavier zouden we nu een pedofiel noemen, maar in die tijd werden de dingen niet benoemd, waren het allemaal neigingen. Xavier heeft het vooral voor Guy, wat Bertrand goed uitkomt.
Tijdens de pubertijd gaat Bertrand op internaat waar hij andere pubers leert kennen. Pubers, dus het testosterongehalte ligt erg hoog. Bertrands sexuele dromen worden hier erger, omdat in de slaapzaal het gemasturbeer hoge pieken bereikt. Ook in de slaapzaal gebeuren zaken die eigenlijk niet kunnen. Na twee jaar keert Bertrand terug naar huis.
Guy, zijn neef, overlijdt als gevolg van een ziekte en Bertrand gaat inwonen bij zijn oom en tante in Parijs. Hij gaat hier naar de universiteit en leert van het leven te genieten. Eerst nog aarzelend omdat hij in eenzaamheid opgegroeid is, maar naar gelang hij toch iets van vrienden maakt, begint hij meer te leven.
Op een bepaald moment wordt de doorlopende tekst meer voetnoten, gedachtengangen en leest het niet meer vlot. Verder zijn er ook brieven en dossiers opgenomen, uiteraard allemaal fictief. Het is jammer dat het vlotte lezen stopt bij zijn huwelijk want Bertrand heeft het geregeld over het leger maar daar lees je niet zo veel over. Hij verwijst naar de Dreyfuss affaire waardoor hij 2 jaar uit het leger stapt, hij brengt veel tijd door in Marokka, de eerste wereldoorlog maakt hij mee.
Boeiend, ik heb bewondering voor het volledig verzinnen van zo'n personage, het lijkt wel alsof hij echt bestaan heeft.

《溺水》中文出版一共囊括两个部分，《萨扬旧事》和《溺水》本篇。《萨扬旧事》可以看作是《溺水》的前传，算作对主人公过去经历的一种补充，但侧重并不在主人公身上，而是当初在青年时代对主人公影响最大的人居伊身上。
《萨扬旧事》的居伊是具有个人魅力的青少年形象，从外形到人格。十二三岁的年纪，因着从巴黎来的特殊经历，便在萨扬的众人间鹤立鸡群。小说里对居伊的描写给我留下的最深印象便是他那种介于成熟与青涩的过渡。他的天性使他得以不自知却又很自然地“搔首弄姿”吸引注意，但年龄的限制却又使他这种卖弄显得天真多趣。这种性格带给《萨扬旧事》中叙述者，也就是居伊表弟的最直接影响就是他对性的开放认知。不羞于谈论性并重视青春期阶段对个人品格的塑造作用，在当时看来或许是一个全新的角度。
作者谈到之所以有那么的虚伪其实本质上是对性的不诚实和否定，人应该自我审视并试图走出迷宫。作为一个女性，我个人对于青春期的感受并没有那么猛烈，无法感知作者所提到那种青春期身体和心灵交互碰撞，阶段替转间浑噩的状态，也无从想象它会如何塑形部分人生，但对于该观点我是认可并理解的。
然而看完了《溺水》，发现之前对于《溺水》和《萨扬旧事》的关系似乎理解有误。被亚马逊上的简介误导的我一直以为二者是承接关系，但读完两篇才发现，《溺水》似乎是《萨扬旧事》里巴尔库借用自己的真名所撰写的有关面包店学徒的悲剧故事。根据《萨扬旧事》给出的模糊信息，《溺水》一事无论真假，对巴尔库造成了严重的精神创伤，也是他日后自杀的导火索。两篇都是杜加尔未完成的遗著《穆默尔中校》收录的篇章，个人猜测后面还有未完成的篇幅用来补充呼应这两个故事，（例如《萨扬旧事》同样提到巴尔库所著的《诱骗成年人》）以此完成整个由萨扬开始的叙事。

Moeilijk te beoordelen als boek omdat het niet voltooid is door de schrijver zelf, maar uitgebracht na z’n dood. En hoewel uit het nawoord blijkt dat de Martin du Gard daar zelf al rekening mee hield, en ook geen bezwaar tegen had, blijf je als lezer toch met een onbevredigd gevoel achter. Voor mij in het bijzonder omdat juist de periode van de Dreyfus affaire en van WW1 mij het meest zouden interesseren en dat waren nu net de delen waar hij niet aan toekwam.
Over wat overblijft heb ik een dubbel gevoel omdat het deel wat wel af was (of toch niet) voor mij tamelijk langdradig en breedsprakig voorkwam, waardoor ik vaak mijn interesse verloor. Sommige bespiegelingen worden ook veel herhaald, maar wie weet waren die dubbelingen wel gesneuveld in een definitieve versie.
Wat mij wel enorm heeft geboeid, is het wereld en mensbeeld dat Martin du Gard via zijn personage kolonel Maumort met ons deelt. Zijn bespiegelingen over de eigen persoon, samenleving, normen en waarden, geschiedenis, politiek, religie zijn vaak aangenaam helder, soms vernieuwend en origineel en in ieder geval heel persoonlijk. En voor mij soms heel herkenbaar. Ik heb daarom wel het hele boek tot en met ‘De Zwarte Doos’ uitgelezen omdat daarin juist nog een heleboel van deze interessante ideeën aan bod komen. En ik had op de helft van het boek toch al besloten dat dit geen roman was zoals je die normaal leest. Dus dan paste deze delen daar voor mij prima bij.

A masterwork of modern French literature, here provided in a masterful translation. It's a pity Roger Martin du Gard is not better-known to English-language readers: he won the Nobel Prize for Literature, after all, and is easily one of the great novelists of the 20th century. He however remains somewhat obscure because he's suffered from not having very many translators nor always very good ones. Here, though, he gets a great translator who also bothers to provide a wealth of information regarding du Gard's own life, sketches he wrote for this novel, and introspection on the time period. This is very essential for those not that familiar with du Gard.
The novel itself concerns the career and life of a military officer, Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort, at a time when a military career was still considered a most-noble goal for a man. Touching on crucial concepts of the period (early 20th century) and written in du Gard's untouchable realism, it's a story that deserves reading and this translation is, even for those able to read the French original, perhaps the best choice overall given its inclusion of the additional background material.

Beautiful, excellent book.
Roger Martin du Gard paints wonderful pictures. His main character Colonel-Lieutenant de Mauort takes us through French history from the last decades of the 19th century until mid 20th century.
He creates a lively picture of this period along with the changes of the main character as he grows older.
His proza is beautiful. It is a book that needs time to read it. I wanted to savour it as long as possible. I took me over a year to finish the book, but not because it was boring, but utterly beautiful. I didn't want to leave Lieutenant- Colonel de Maumort. No matter the time passed between the moments reading this book I had no trouble falling into the storyline. It was like the book had taken a part of my brain to reside in. Even now, after finishing the story, and five books along the way I still hear his voice.

A huge beautifully written book. The author died before finishing it. Most of the book is written as a memoir reminiscing about events and people in de Maumort's life as he grew from childhood to an old man. About 2/3 of the way through the book it takes a, somewhat, different tone and appears to have been assembled after the authors death and the final part was written from his notes. In spite of this it is still a book worth reading.

Prachtig boek, een biografie in romanvorm. Of een roman in biografievorm. Geeft een mooi beeld van de periode eind 19e, begin 20e eeuw in Frankrijk. Bijna 1000 pagina's bespiegelingen, slow writing, slow reading. Af en toe bijna verwarrend: auteur en hoofdpersoon vallen ogenschijnlijk soms samen. Je moet je soms realiseren dat de noten achterin (50 pagina's) de noten van de hoofdpersoon. Een gedeelte vluchtiger gelezen op het eind (de zwarte doos) met allemaal losse flarden gedachten. Vervelend dat de verwijzingen in de tekst niet uitkomen bij de betreffende noot achterin. Een makke trouwens van meer e-boeken.

Dubbel gevoel. Ongelooflijk goede beschrijvingen van hoe Maumort zich voelt, vooral die als student in Parijs, verbazingwekkend nauwkeurig en herkenbaar. maar het is al met al allemaal wat te veel.
Of het komt door de precisie van een tekstbezorger die de overleden auteur niet tekort wil doen? Was verrukt van de portretten in 'het oude Frankrijk' en hier en daar is die stijl terug te zien, helaas te weinig.
Ben gestopt bij de 'dossiers van de zwarte doos' . Niet iets wat me vaak overkomt. Maar ik heb voorlopig gewoon genoeg gehad.

Ondanks de prachtige stijl en het rake taalgebruik helaas niet zo indrukwekkend als “Les Thibaults”. Het bijzondere van dit boek is wel dat het zomaar een bestaande biografie zou kunnen zijn in plaats van een fictieve.

My husband and I sell books through Amazon and ABE and I saw our copy of this while I was listing and shelving our books. For some reason it really attracted me so I picked it up from the library.
This is the last work by du Gard and it is unfinished. Luc Brebion and Timothy Crouse worked together to "complete" the novel based on notes left by du Gard and also translated it into English. So the novel has an unusual format.
The first part is as a "regular" novel, written in first person by Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort, describing his life from childhood (1870-1887) through his death. The last portions of this are gathered from notes left by the author and are rough rather than finished chapters.
The second part is an epistolary start. The author had also thought about writing the novel as a series of letters and they are all included in this section. The last section is scraps of notes left behind in a black box that describe some of the character's feelings. They are obviously intended as original thoughts on how the character will develop.
Sounds weird but it works. You see de Maumort as he wants you to see him, in all his contradictions. It's hard to explain how the story fits together since de Maumort skips going into detail on some important aspects of French history, such as the Dreyfus affair. But later, in the letters and black box notes, we discover his real feelings and actions during that time, which answer some of the questions we have about gaps in his narrative. You have to read all the sections to really get a feel for what du Gard intended, but to me it was worth it.
I kept setting the book aside (it's nearly 800 pages) saying I had other books I could read, but I kept coming back. There is an attraction for the writing and the layout that I can't explain.

This novel by Roger Martin du Gard, 1937 Nobel Laureate was unfortunately left unfinished at his death in 1958. That is regrettable because the reader is left with only sketches and notes to end the story. However, his completed chapters are captivating - they include the Lieutenant's coming-of-age to manhood and marriage, ultimately ending with scenes of Nazi occupation. Warning: the recounted tales of his childhood are quite sensuous, homoerotic in nature. Perhaps the Lieutenant's ascent to married life and lackluster normality symbolizes Martin du Gard’s views of morality and civilization. Later in his works he states, "Civilization rested on a fabrication with no basis whatsoever; but it was enough to accept the contemporary myths without illusion to be perfectly at ease in the world. I knew, for example, that common morality - and let's simply say 'morality' - rests on nothing, that the distinction between good and evil is arbitrary; that it rules over society like the survival of the necessity for police and organization. But morality rules and it needs to rule so that things work and the complicated gears of the human community run smoothly." Aptly said by a man who experienced Hitler’s Germany, and Europe’s devastation? Lastly, Martin du Gard is primarily noted for his three-volume Thibalt family saga which spans the First World War era. I have been able to collect these out-of-print books and look forward to soon reading this famous collection.

Net terug uit Frankrijk, per toeval van de plank gepakt, vanwege de intrigerende titel, het mooie Franse landhuis op de kaft en de enthousiasmerende inleiding van Maarten ' t Hart. Meer dan 800 pagina 's vertelt de fascinerende luitenant-kolonel de Maumort over zijn leven dat begint in 1870 en eindigt na de 2-e wereld oorlog. Echt super soepel en fraai neemt hij je mee langs het leven van kind naar schooljongen en student tot aan de overpeinsende oudere man. Prachtige beschrijvingen van het Franse leven, maar ook ziele roerselen en de invloed van grote Franse denkers. Ook word je meer inzicht geboden in de Duits - Franse verhoudingen.
Wellicht zorgt de vertaling er ook voor dat de leesvonken van de bladzijden spatten.

Bijzonder boek, ik zou het niet uitgekozen hebben maar kreeg het cadeau. Een heel stuk las heel prettig en was interessant. Richting het einde vond ik het minder fijn lezen en de laatste losse aantekeningen (omdat de schrijver tijdens het schrijven is overleden) heb ik overgeslagen. Al met al een intrigerend verhaal.

Lots of rather mediocre philosophy and not many vivid characters or much action. The last part was assembled from the deceased author's "Notes" and isn't very good. You'd think a novel about a French soldier's career in North Africa, world war I, and the invasion of France in 1940, would be more engaging. Too bad.

Weerom een meesterwerk van RMDG! Ik krijg geen genoeg van zijn beschrijvingen en zijn mijmeringen. Hier gaat het over Luitenant-kolonel de Maumort, alhoewel hij een volledig fictief persoon, is zou je zweren dat deze biografie authentiek is, dat hij werkelijk bestaan heeft.
Mijn grootste verwijt aan Roger Martin du Gard is dat hij te vroeg gegaan is, en dat hij dit werk onafgewerkt achterliet. Ik wilde meer, ik wilde heel het verhaal. Vooral wanneer je de notas achteraan het boek leest, met de uitgebreide karaktertrekken en opinies van Maumort, besef je wat je allemaal moet missen, besef je wat niet is.
Anderzijds is het ook boeiend te zien hoe precies Maumort uitgetekend, gecreëerd, geschapen werd door de schrijver. Hij heeft zowat over alles een mening, je lijkt hem van binnen en van buiten te kennen. Hij komt echt tot leven...
