This series has me conflicted. I'm enjoying the story overall, as well as the characters. But I'm having to work really hard to piece it all together. This second of the series was more comprehensive than the first but I still found myself re-reading parts in order to try to make sense of things. After reading this book, I think going back and re-reading the first book would help with overall understanding of what is going on in the story.
I likely would have given this a 3.5 to 4 star rating if not for two things. First, the editing was terrible. I don't expect perfection but there were parts in this book where the track changes could be seen. Overlooking the odd typo is one thing but trying to sift through text that has been crossed out and rewritten is another. The other part I disliked was the ending. It was very abrupt. It was as though this was half of a longer book and was just chopped off at a convenient point without any kind of subtle ending. Kind of like finishing a song half way through the chorus. The story is compelling enough that I want to find out what happens. I just wish I could get an easier feel of some of the background events and the wherefore and the why's. I'm hoping it will all come together in the subsequent book(s).
