His Royal Favorite is much angstier than the first book, which ends with Ben deciding he wants to stay with James and try, really try, to make the relationship work.
But James is still the Prince Regent, and Ben his "boy toy" (as one particularly vicious paparazzo calls him).
Ben has lived his life as a nomad. He's independent and self-reliant. James warns Ben of the media shitstorm about to come down upon them, but Ben doesn't fully grasp how much his life will change until it does.
The first half of the book about killed me. Nothing is easy for the MCs, not for James, whose sister is still self-harming and whose Uncle Richard tries his hardest to make sure the Church of England will ask James to step down as future king; and not for Ben, whom the paparazzi hunt with cruel intent (even his parents' horrific deaths are dredged up and sensationalized) and whose colleagues are more titillated by his relationship with the prince than his reporting skills.
All relationships require work and commitment, but these two have more to overcome than most. James tries so hard to make Ben comfortable, but Ben feels owned and stripped bare.
The constant tension was heartbreaking, but fortunately both men are mature adults and attempt to talk through their problems (there's no big misunderstanding, no miscommunication—just sweat, tears, and heartache).
The author treats mental health issues with sensitivity. James's sister Indigo needs help, more help than he can give her. When Indigo's world collapses, it's Ben who's there for James, Ben who pushes James to do the right thing, the only thing.
What it comes down to is this: Can James give up his future as king, his birthright, to be with Ben? And can Ben give up his job and privacy to be with James?
Following pain, betrayal, anger, and jealousy, the men hit rock bottom around 50 percent, but by 60 percent there is a glimmer of hope: a kiss on a mountain, a determined Lady Cassandra, a rather interesting chat with the queen, a visit to a gay club (oh, yes!), and the Best Headline of All Time (according to James anyway).
I loved the dual POV and the true emotional connection between the MCs. This book is less steamy than the first book, which was a bit of a letdown. There is one particularly intense scene that's interrupted and not revisited again on page.
But the HEA ... the HEA is everything! The last chapter is an extended epilogue, a montage of sorts. It's perfect, and I could finally breathe.
Despite (or maybe because of) the angst and struggle, I loved this book and was deeply invested in the MCs and their relationship. This book cannot be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend this series.

What a fantastic surprise from this duet!
And to think I almost missed it because of the mixed reviews. I should of known better.
His Royal Secret just worked for me. I felt their impossible love in the story, in each sentence, between the lines and even at work, when all I wanted was to be reading it.
Their relationship progress felt real:

.)passing for a status of already being head over heels with one another and keeping themselves in denial
to the final moments where they struggle to make it work.
The author tackled matters that I have never stopped to think about. What does it mean to be a Royal? And what about being constantly in the spotlight and exposed to the world? I, for one, couldn't. She did it in such a believable way that I must say: I am happy for being a no one.

Wow! !! This one was even better! Angsty and so interesting!! We often see royal romances that ends with the guys coming out but we never see the aftermath, we never get to see how is it possible for a commoner to make house with a royal prince. I think I understand Meghan Markle a bit better after this book. Still, I was very close to give this 1 star. Shocking, right?
Look, I understand Ben’s reticence of being in the spot light, living in a gilded cage as the commoner who corrupted the prince, living a life of etiquette and false smiles, but dude, you were warned! James told you 100 times to run while you could . You said you were sure and that this is what you wanted, that you could do it. Yet you kept poor James on his toes the entire book. I was so mad that even at 85% in the book Ben wasn’t sure he’ll continue the relationship, he was making James’ life a living hell. And I thought he got rid of his fear of “collar and leash” in the first book so why he kept mentioning these words now I didn’t get. And what bothered me the most and almost made me give it 1 star was the fact that he, at 85% in the book , for a minute contemplated dumping James and going back to his abusive (pedophile in my eyes) ex. So close to finish line he disappointed me so bad that I couldn’t care less that he didn’t, that he realized he loved James. Well he realized he loved him various times in the book yet he was still with a foot out the door most of the time. It irked me. Of course, I couldn’t rate it one star because the book is awesome, it just bothered me so I dropped just one. It’s true that Ben’s struggle was real and his aversion to royal families and hypocrisy never really went away 100% so it was easy to empathize with his reluctance to commit to James and that life.
It’s really really worth reading this duology if you like more or less realistic royal romances. It’s tender and raw here there and the guys are amazing together (and the sex is hot) . Also this was new to me author and I was very impressed with the writing.
The side characters were still awesome and Indigo’s story broke my heart. TW for self harm and suicide ideation (side character).

For a few moments James tried to find the right words. “Like that moment in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy opens the door and sees Oz for the first time. Everything goes from black and white to Technicolor. And you’re leaving everything that’s familiar. Instead the world is both scarier and more beautiful than ever before.”

I was sooooo eager to read this part two after James and Ben’s story ended on a cliffhanger of sorts in part one. I completely fell in love with these characters and their British royal family romance with lots of secrets and a M/M romance that was finally going to see the light of day. If book one is all about Ben and James falling in love and James deciding to come out despite the consequences to his role as next in line to the British throne, book two is all about the fallout in the media and the royal family as they actually make the announcement. Great pacing. Lots of juicy drama, which Lilah Pace writes wonderfully.
In this book, where Ben and James were solidly a couple, trying to work out their next steps while in the eye of the public and the UK tabloids, it was nice to see their relationship progress to a more complex level, as well as see familiar characters like Indigo, Roberto, and the corgis (I do love books with adorable dogs.) Of course, there were bound to be problems with the paparazzi and seeing how the drama unfolds as these two struggle to create their HEA makes for a delicious read.

This book! This book! Oh! It did something to me and I loved it so much.
This book had more angst than the first book, the kind that hurts you so good. James and Ben had to face the world after coming out publicly. Ben had to deal with his own demons decide if he was willing to lose his freedom, for love. It was depressing , Ben's doubt felt so real and through it all James was by his side.
As soon as Ben found himself becoming jealous about other men in a boyfriend’s orbit, he’d dump the boyfriend and become single once again. Maybe it was a cold way to live, but it had worked for him, until now.
James is my new book boyfriend, he was sweet, patient and so loving.
The humor was so good, I loved that there was no miscommunication, they talked and solved problems together. Oh! and these two had problems which included how to tactfully order more lube without the tabloids knowing
Ben flopped down beside James, gathering his breath to say, “Oh, God, I can just see it.” He put on his best posh English accent, which wasn’t very good, making this funnier: “Excuse me, Glover, but could you be a dear and fetch us the finest lubricant in all the kingdom?”
James held up the tube. “The worst part is the brand name.” Which was Back Door.
The romance was on another level, so sweet, engaging and i got hooked from the beginning.
The sex was so hot and chemistry off the charts.

His Royal Favorite is the continuation of His Royal Secret, which must be read before reading this book. At the end of the first book, James has decided to come out to the people as a gay man, and his boyfriend Ben has decided to stand by him. Being the Prince, James faces many challenges and he's used to it, but Ben has not faced these same issues yet. With the overwhelming attention of the press and James' whole future threatened, both don't know whether their relationship will stand or break under the pressure.
I liked this book a lot more than the first one, I felt it was very compelling and interesting to read. I love the attention to detail the author put into this book, by that I mean her research on royal customs and procedures. She seems to have a very good grasp on what this kind of situation would entail should a real life prince of England were to come out.
This book seemed to have more focus than the first, maybe due to the characters being more committed to each other as a couple than in the first where it was more a secret lovers kind of situation. There was a lot of closure for many questions readers may have been left with from the first book.
I've enjoyed reading James and Ben's story and while I didn't love this duet, I did indeed enjoy it. I think many fans of MM genre will love these books and even readers who don't normally read MM/ Maybe royal romance lovers will give this duet a shot.

As I promised myself I would give 5 stars only to the books that evoke strong emotions in me, I cannot give less to this one. Not after reading it all night. It kept me glued to the pages and dying to know what happens next!
I loved the first book. It was also super catchy and sweet and hot. But here we get more angst and it worked for me better. I understood Ben's fears and the way he struggled with the press. His whole life changed. I ached for their love being twisted and how so many lies and rude remarks being on the front page in all the newspapers. I ached for Indigo and her struggles. I can't believe how much I loved it! The writing is beautiful. The characters feel real and genuine. I would have wanted another wedding at the end, but it was still amazing! So I will round up my 4,5 stars.

I was both impressed and sincerely hooked reading the first part, His Royal Secret (4.5 stars). Truly good stuff and with a nice romantic but cliffy ending making me eager for more at once.
I'm knocked and so damn happy Yes hands up, I have been as glued to my e-reader since yesterday. Every short free minute...

A life when every single person on the street know who you are and feel free to express their opion, nice or bad, about you and your person.

Not too long and added with the absolutely right amount of thrilling exiting troubles, angst, insecurity, important thoughts about real life and all those royal rules. Here is also a big part about the struggle for power (be gay and still the future king) and some both funny and sad quite odd royal traditions. Mix up with heat (terrific steam) and all those romantic scenes (intense life important discussions etc) we loves in our romances. All pieces to make these books to much more than just another steamy M/M romance.

I can not help but to repeat myself ... But this was a a simply PERFECT higly romantic duology read for a (born) ROMANTIC girl like me. Re-read again-again, and just as much fun as the first time around. This has become a comfort-read for weeks when DNFs and ragey books have been predominant:-)
Thank Jeebus for this book, since this has not been a good 'book-day'.
In this one James and Ben have a lot of stuff to figure out.
James successfully came out, and so far the backlash is not too bad. Ben is introduced in the press as his partner, and have sent out a press release, but other than that Ben is hoping that he will be able to keep his job at the paper, and live his life somewhat normally.
What actually happens is that his colleagues stop being colleagues and start being spectators. His boss is not a friend! He is followed by the press, like wild dogs after a juicy bone. They dig up his painful past, where he lost his parents at 13 and put a picture of their car crash on the front of the paper! He has to move in with James for a few weeks (that was the 'deal' in the beginning), but it is becoming quite obvious that he will not be left alone after a 'few weeks'. And I have to say, their relationship was wonderful. I know that this was the first time for the both of them that they were in an equal, adult, 'out' relationship and yes, they do have issues with communicating, but they love each other and they find peace with each other, which I thought was beautifully written.
But with Ben's increasing depression (he also quit his job, since it was impossible for him, to actually do it) and James' problems with the commonwealth and the church accepting a gay King, they are having quite a few issues.
This book was such a nice ending to the first one. I think that the 'solutions' and the honesty in this book should be FUCKING applauded. I loved the writing style, and am so happy that we got both Ben's and James' POV!
Yeah both books are definite re-reads for me!

In this one James and Ben have a lot of stuff to figure out.
James successfully came out, and so far the backlash is not too bad. Ben is introduced in the press as his partner, and have sent out a press release, but other than that Ben is hoping that he will be able to keep his job at the paper, and live his life somewhat normally.
What actually happens is that his colleagues stop being colleagues and start being spectators. His boss is not a friend! He is followed by the press, like wild dogs after a juicy bone. They dig up his painful past, where he lost his parents at 13 and put a picture of their car crash on the front of the paper! He has to move in with James for a few weeks (that was the 'deal' in the beginning), but it is becoming quite obvious that he will not be left alone after a 'few weeks'. I Can’t give the author enough credit for the way she/he (seeing as Lilah Pace is a pseudonym for an established author) brought this whole thing together so beautifully.
James and Ben are people. Just normal guys, with each his own set of responsibilities and personality.
I found the mature way they handled all their conflicts and difficult situations part of the reason I couldn’t put this book down.
James, with his childish amazement at some of what the “normal” world has to offer, yet strong and sure in his role as the possible future King.
Ben, with his strong sense of freedom and self.
It was realistic! It was not overshadowed by unnecessary drama because lets face it, there was enough of that going on already and the fact that the author didn’t throw in the kitchen sink (like many authors feel the need to do sometimes) made me just want to rant and rave even more about just what Lilah Pace created here!
I have ONE BIG problem after finishing this series.
Why the hell is there only two MM books in the authors collection???? What are we supposed to read now??

I’m experiencing a bit of review-writer’s block right now, which isn’t fair to this book but I have to at least note that I really liked it. Over the course of the story, I lost track of the number of things that surprised and delighted me. I won’t attempt to list them because spoilers, but the best element was that I’ve never read anything quite like this before.
I’d especially recommend it to readers who like to go beyond the HEA and get into some more real shit that can threaten it (at least, as real as you can get when one of the MCs is the heir apparent).
Not perfect — I liked some pieces of it better than others — but on the whole, a solid recommend and one that is worth reading for something different within the M/M genre.

I get goosebumps whenever an author takes on a fairly risqué storyline that might make you raise an eyebrow at first, but then before you know it, you find yourself consumed by a story that is as touching as it is thought-provoking, and Lilah Pace is truly a master at this. This story immediately piqued my interest with its intriguing premise of a fictional future king of England leading a double life, but it was the sheer brilliance of Ms Pace’s style of storytelling, her unwavering focus on her characters, and the powerful emotions she keeps building on until the end, that held me captive until the very last page. A truly stunning love story—told over two equally riveting books—that I am recommending with all my heart.

Sequels usually disappoint me, but wow - not this time. Book two was every bit as good as the first. Such a great story, clever plotting and wonderful MCs. Even though there was a very good epilogue, I still wanted more!
By now I've read all the first-in-series by this author, and I'm so curious of who's behind the pen name so I could read more of her books.

Wonderful follow up rounds off the royal romance
There's still no King of England and England and Britain aren't the same thing but that's just my own niggle about when people set a book in in this world but then Americanise it or mix stuff up.
The romance itself, however, is simply divine, full of rich characters in a world which is beautifully drawn out and filled with detail which does give the sense of just how bizarre it has to be to step into a life of eternal scrutiny.
Ben's uncertainty was wholly believable and the way in which his fears were dealt with and overcome was superbly done.
The epilogue was incredibly sweet and I would kill for a book three after James has become King.

While I enjoyed this, I did not love it liked I loved book 1. In this book, they are already an established couple so this book is mostly an angsty story of them navigating their relationship and the monarchy. Still pretty good, but I just liked book 1, the story of them getting together better.

4.5 stars. "His Royal Favorite" (HRF) is the intriguing sequel to "His Royal Secret" (HRS) which ended in a cliffhanger as Prince James decides to come out. In this book James and Ben question if their relationship is strong enough to withstand the 24/7/365 media scrutiny as well as royal in-family fighting and plotting.
HRS was a fast-paced sexy read as James and Ben meet and begin a very intense, very steamy relationship. In comparison, HRF deals with what happens after the whirlwind romance, when the Prince of Wales comes out to his family, to his country, to the world. What becomes a very freeing experience for James becomes an unbearable one for Ben, with the press mocking and belittling his every word.
I had only a few minor quibbles about some plot points that I felt bogged down the flow of the book.
Together, "His Royal Secret" and "His Royal Favorite" present a nuanced well-written story about a fairytale romance and what happens after the Happily Ever After. I highly recommend this series!

"Do you not see what they've done to me?"The chemistry between James and Ben is as smexy as ever, but tempered with the realization, as Ben says, "I love you - so much, you don't even know. [...]. I love you, but I hate this." The true strength of HRF is how James and Ben's relationship becomes one of absolute honesty and trust as they have to decide if they love one another enough to let go of their relationship, should James abdicates his throne, or should they stay and fight for each other and their love. The book keeps you guessing almost until the final page what that decision will be.

I really enjoyed this two book take on royal life, with a twist. It was engaging, thought provoking, and emotional. I loved James and Ben, Cass rocked and Indigo broke my heart then showed such strength of human spirit. Such a great story!

Picking up where His Royal Secret left us, His Royal Favorite sees James, The Prince of Wales, having come out to his family and now preparing to do the same to the world. With no idea how people will respond, uncertain times are ahead, but one thing is certain; the feelings he and Ben share for one another are getting stronger every day.
The first book left me underwhelmed focussing on sex over storyline, but when you combine the two together you're actually brought a story that would probably have worked better as a single read: everything I thought the first was lacking was found here and, with a deeper focus on James and Ben's relationship outside of the bedroom along with Princess Amelia's personal torment and their far from normal situation, we're privy to their fears, vulnerabilities, fight and the emotional strain and pressure being in the public eye brings.

I absolutely devoured this and whereas I was quite blasé over my feelings for James and Ben beforehand, they quickly worked their way into my heart with their love for one another and their honesty; this really was a journey of self-discovery for them individually and as a couple.
What started out as a sex-fuelled story in His Royal Secret, developed into an engaging, touching love story with some angst in His Royal Favorite. And with subtle mentions of real life people, situations and reactions that lift it when needed (and you appreciate that little bit more if you're a Brit), I'm glad I decided to see how this story played out.

Still humming on the inside after finishing 'His Royal Favourite' a couple of minutes ago, and it's a humming of content and pure joy. I LOVED book one of this two-part series, but I ADORED this. It went straight on to my 'best of the best' shelf.
I think Lilah Pace nailed the plot which could have easily turned into a bit of pink fluffy cotton wool. That certainly does NOT happen here. Instead we get a highly realistic look at what James and Ben go through once their relationship becomes public and what it means to each of them. There is tension and angst from the word go, and then one hurdle after the other is thrown into James and Ben's way. I suffered with them, every step along the way, biting my nails and tapping my foot, and twisting my hair .... ok, I guess you get that this really grabbed me in the best possible way!
Ben ... that speedo photo in the media was just... :)
The story continues straight where it left off in book 1 and delves into James's coming out. For Ben, who has barely acknowledged his love for James to himself, an avalanche of events seems to take his life outside his control. Not an easy realization for a man who sees himself as an independent, self-reliant man with a great job. Of course he loves James, but can he cope with all the media attention, being at the centre of public interest, losing a career he loves, and most of all living a life within the rules and regulations of the royal household?
The author does an excellent job at weighing up the pros and cons, the love and hurt, the feelings of loss and fulfilment that come with Ben's struggle to remain with James. No wonder he keeps sitting on the committment fence for most of the book. It's not because he doesn't love James, but because he doesn't want to promise something he isn't sure he can keep. I loved how the author resolved this in the end.

As for James - what can I say? I loved the guy in book 1, but after this he's definitely in for the number 1 spot of 'most lovable character' in 2016. James is sweet, considerate, charming, cute, hot, vulnerable .... just brilliant. If you think that all sounds a bit...MUCH - nope, it never comes across as that. More like, please hand me my own James NOW.
Just to give you an idea - whilst discussing what freedom could mean to James, Ben suggests that it could have been coming to gay bar and picking up any man James would like. This is what James answers:
No, not without you. Being without you wasn't freedom. Loving you is what sets me free.
The theme of what freedom means in their situation is recurrent in various shades of grey and very interesting to ponder over.
Ben and James have easily moved into my top ten of 'all time favourite couples', but I also loved the Amelia sub plot which was brilliantly executed and had me in tears. And re-meeting Cass and Spencer was a delight. Not to talk about the Corgis. As for the rest of the Firm - well, what do you expect from royals?
One thing I never found out - how did James and Ben buy more lube eventually? It was rather amusing when they realized neither could really go out and buy more. (Hey, what about online shopping?)
Loved the in-depth characterization, the anguish and realistic approach, the beautiful character development and the exceedingly satisfying HEA.

His Royal Favorite is the second book in the duology that began with His Royal Secret. As it’s a direct sequel, it’s advisable to have read the first book before embarking upon this one, and also means that there are going to be spoilers for His Royal Secret in this review.
The story in His Royal Favorite picks up pretty much where it ended in the previous book. In a Britain in which Queen Victoria and the House of Winsdor never existed, the reigning monarch is the elderly King George IX of the House of Hanover, and the next in line to the throne is his grandson, the handsome, popular, twenty-nine year old James, Prince of Wales. But James is gay and very firmly in the closet, believing that the British people will not accept a homosexual as their next king, and also well aware of the political and religious issues that would arise as a result of the fact that the monarch is also Head of the Church of England and of the Commonwealth.
But James’ life got even more complicated when he met and fell in love with Benjamin Dahan, an Israeli born German national who is also a journalist. Given the circumstances, the couple were happy to settle for a no-strings sex-only affair at first, but it wasn’t long before the relationship turned into something more emotional as both men realised that they had found something very special in the other, someone to talk to and laugh with, someone who understood them on an almost instinctual level. At the end of the book, James had finally decided that enough was enough and that he didn’t want to live a lie any longer. Knowing that Ben doesn’t want commitment, that putting a partner through the horrors of the media circus that was bound to follow his announcement would be extremely unfair, and, ultimately, loving Ben enough to let him go, James resigned himself to going it alone. I admit I had a lump in my throat when Ben told James he was in it for the long haul and that he was going to stand beside him through whatever was to come.
His Royal Favorite starts with James telling his PR people that he is going to be coming out as a gay man in an existing relationship and follows the two men through the ensuing months, which are going to prove incredibly difficult for both of them and will test them to their limits.
Lilah Pace has done a fantastic job in both books of portraying the way that tradition and protocol still play such a huge role in the life of the modern royal family, and also of the way the tabloid press, gossip rags and paparazzi operate. James gives a wonderful, heartfelt speech at his press conference, and while the public’s initial reaction to the fact that he is gay is generally positive, it’s Ben who suffers the real slings and arrows. He had some idea of what might be awaiting him from the media – people camping outside his flat, his place of work and following him wherever he goes – but nothing could have prepared him for what actually happens, which is incredibly nasty and intrusive.
Ben had led a rather nomadic existence up to now, his work as an economic and financial journalist taking him round the world. He loves his job and plans to continue it, but after he is revealed as the Prince of Wales’ lover, it becomes impossible. Sure, his phone calls are taken by everyone now, but nobody takes him seriously, and when he discovers that someone at the office has been leaking comments to the press, it’s the final nail in the coffin and he resigns, planning to work on his next book instead. But things don’t quite work out that way. Ben feels adrift – his life has changed in ways he couldn’t have forseen and he starts to question his decisions and even to wonder if he knows who he is any more. An uncomfortable distance begins to grow between him and James, but neither knows how to cross the breach.
James may have been born to a life of immense wealth and privilege, but he has problems, too. His uncle, Prince Richard, is stirring up trouble within the Church by speaking to the Archbishop of Canterbury about the incompatibility of James’s homosexuality with his (possible) future position as Head of the Church of England; his sister, emotionally fragile at the best of times, is showing signs of becoming more unstable; and Ben is pulling away from him. Added to all that is the fact that James knows that there are soon likely to be calls for him to be removed from the line of succession. While he can’t deny that the idea of stepping aside and being able to have more of a private life, is an attractive one, being king is the job James was born to do, and has been trained for all his life. Moreover, he wants to do it; he loves his country and he wants to play his part in shaping its future.
All the secondary characters, even those that only appear briefly, are carefully crafted to be individuals rather than stereotypes, and I particularly enjoyed Ben’s interactions with the formidable Queen Louise and his developing friendship with Cass, the young woman who had acted as James’ girlfriend for years. Ms. Pace writes with warmth, humour and poignancy; and if the ending is a little bit fairy-tale… well, that’s what handsome princes are for, right?
His Royal Secret and His Royal Favorite (and I have to wonder why, as they’re both fairly short books, the whole story wasn’t published in one long one) tell the story of two people who fall in love under extraordinary circumstances and are prepared to go the extra mile to make it work. It’s not easy; both make mistakes and Ben is often overwhelmed by the complexity of James’s life, but it’s obvious that in spite of their massive difference in status, Ben and James are equal partners in their relationship. Both are fully cognizant of what they have found in each other and the way they support one another through some truly difficult times and experiences is a real joy to behold.
His Royal Favorite provides an excellent conclusion to this sexy, heart-wrenching and quite unique tale, and I’m already looking forward to reading the whole thing again.
His Royal Favorite is the second book in the duology that began with His Royal Secret. As it’s a direct sequel, it’s advisable to have read the first book before embarking upon this one, and also means that there are going to be spoilers for His Royal Secret in this review.
The story in His Royal Favorite picks up pretty much where it ended in the previous book. In a Britain in which Queen Victoria and the House of Winsdor never existed, the reigning monarch is the elderly King George IX of the House of Hanover, and the next in line to the throne is his grandson, the handsome, popular, twenty-nine year old James, Prince of Wales. But James is gay and very firmly in the closet, believing that the British people will not accept a homosexual as their next king, and also well aware of the political and religious issues that would arise as a result of the fact that the monarch is also Head of the Church of England and of the Commonwealth.
But James’ life got even more complicated when he met and fell in love with Benjamin Dahan, an Israeli born German national who is also a journalist. Given the circumstances, the couple were happy to settle for a no-strings sex-only affair at first, but it wasn’t long before the relationship turned into something more emotional as both men realised that they had found something very special in the other, someone to talk to and laugh with, someone who understood them on an almost instinctual level. At the end of the book, James had finally decided that enough was enough and that he didn’t want to live a lie any longer. Knowing that Ben doesn’t want commitment, that putting a partner through the horrors of the media circus that was bound to follow his announcement would be extremely unfair, and, ultimately, loving Ben enough to let him go, James resigned himself to going it alone. I admit I had a lump in my throat when Ben told James he was in it for the long haul and that he was going to stand beside him through whatever was to come.
His Royal Favorite starts with James telling his PR people that he is going to be coming out as a gay man in an existing relationship and follows the two men through the ensuing months, which are going to prove incredibly difficult for both of them and will test them to their limits.
Lilah Pace has done a fantastic job in both books of portraying the way that tradition and protocol still play such a huge role in the life of the modern royal family, and also of the way the tabloid press, gossip rags and paparazzi operate. James gives a wonderful, heartfelt speech at his press conference, and while the public’s initial reaction to the fact that he is gay is generally positive, it’s Ben who suffers the real slings and arrows. He had some idea of what might be awaiting him from the media – people camping outside his flat, his place of work and following him wherever he goes – but nothing could have prepared him for what actually happens, which is incredibly nasty and intrusive.
Ben had led a rather nomadic existence up to now, his work as an economic and financial journalist taking him round the world. He loves his job and plans to continue it, but after he is revealed as the Prince of Wales’ lover, it becomes impossible. Sure, his phone calls are taken by everyone now, but nobody takes him seriously, and when he discovers that someone at the office has been leaking comments to the press, it’s the final nail in the coffin and he resigns, planning to work on his next book instead. But things don’t quite work out that way. Ben feels adrift – his life has changed in ways he couldn’t have forseen and he starts to question his decisions and even to wonder if he knows who he is any more. An uncomfortable distance begins to grow between him and James, but neither knows how to cross the breach.
James may have been born to a life of immense wealth and privilege, but he has problems, too. His uncle, Prince Richard, is stirring up trouble within the Church by speaking to the Archbishop of Canterbury about the incompatibility of James’s homosexuality with his (possible) future position as Head of the Church of England; his sister, emotionally fragile at the best of times, is showing signs of becoming more unstable; and Ben is pulling away from him. Added to all that is the fact that James knows that there are soon likely to be calls for him to be removed from the line of succession. While he can’t deny that the idea of stepping aside and being able to have more of a private life, is an attractive one, being king is the job James was born to do, and has been trained for all his life. Moreover, he wants to do it; he loves his country and he wants to play his part in shaping its future.

I am in a romantic relationship with Prince James, currently Prince Regent and head of state for the United Kingdom.
He loves me, and I love him. I’m in love the way I thought only fools and children could ever be. I spent my whole life being the most cynical bastard in the world, and I never believed in fairy tales, so of course an actual, literal Prince Charming came along.
Oh, and by the way, the next king of England is gay. Might want to assign someone to write a piece on that. His coming out will probably be the biggest news story of the year.
Deciding to stay with his lover James is a cakewalk compared with actually doing it. Because no matter how much Ben may love James there is just no getting around the fact that James is Heir to the throne of England and currently Regent because of his grandfather’s health. While coming out might be stressful for James, it is Ben who gets all the flack. The press hound him, the country as a whole seems to hate him, and he never envisioned a life where everything he did was scrutinized, picked apart, and trashed in every newspaper and news broadcast. Ben is finding out that while he may love James, he might not be able to live a life with him. Some people were not made for the spotlight, and this taciturn writer seem to be one of them.
His Royal Favorite picks up right after the ending of the first book, His Royal Secret. It is pretty much imperative that you read the first book before starting this one. The story is basically split in two between the books. On the bright side, book one is really good, and now that book two is out you can read the story the whole way thru and not even need to stop.
I found myself totally smitten with this story and these characters. While Favorite tends to get a bit more angsty than Secret there is no denying that every page was well worth the uncertainty.
I loved how it did not downplay Ben’s issues with his sudden and infamous popularity and how that all affected his relationship with James. While Prince Charming sweeping off his love to a castle and living happily-ever-after works great in fairy tales, in real life nothing’s that easy. Even if the dude is actually a prince. Ben is really not made for that kind of life, and has no way to even imagine how bad it could get. And when it exceeds his expectations he is forced to realize that HEAs are damn hard work…and sometimes not even possible despite the love that sparked them. His struggle to find himself and find a place where he can exist inside of the expectations of a nation and his new role, made me appreciate the ending all the more. It also made me wish there was a book three. Because damn that would be awesome.
Some of the other high points in this book include James’ relationship with his sister Indigo, and Indigo’s struggle with depression and self-harm. This was handled really well in this book (if not always by her family) and I’m glad the author did not just leave this thread to disappear under the sheer weight of all the other plotlines. A lot of James’ actions are in direct relation to Indigo’s problems, and I liked that it didn’t simply get fixed with James coming out. But mostly I like Indigo as a flawed, but entirely interesting character, that adds a bit of heart and depth to this story. The crown becomes something more than just a responsibility to James, a duty he has to perform. It makes it so that every decision has an impact that can be seen in real life. Not just some poll numbers or newspaper circulation counts.
I really cannot recommend this series and this book enough. It is incredibly well written and the characters really pull you in and never let go. It is witty and fun, but also has a serious edge that keeps you in suspense till the last chapter.

The follow-up to His Royal Secret was even better than the first! Beware of spoilers from Book 1.
James and Ben pick up where they left off in Book 1, with James about to come out to the entire nation about his sexual orientation. And Ben has agreed to come out as his partner right along with him.
Ben has been out for so long that he doesn't expect what happens next. He expects the invasiveness of the paparazzi. He expects the public scrutiny. He expects the crowds camping outside his flat and his workplace. But, the media keeps a certain level of decorum when reporting about the Prince of Wales. There are certain lines they won't cross about the beloved Prince. There are no such lines with regard to the Prince's "boy toy." His every past and current move is on display while vitriol is hurled his way. Lies are told. Old tragedies are waved in front of his face to see his reaction. And all the while he must accept the pomp and pageantry. The butlers and footmen.
James has the weight of the world on his shoulders, too, though different weight than Ben. If he doesn't get the support from the Church, he won't remain in the succession line to be King, the title he was born into and hasn't been outside his birthline for as long back as he can remember. He is worried daily for the mental health of his sister, and he can't bear it if Ben decides that the Royal life is not bearable on a long-term basis.
Angstier than the first book, in the best way possible, His Royal Favorite really brought the feelz. It packs a punch with its edge. The author managed to keep me on the edge of my seat, in the second half of the book in particular. I was in a constant state of how will this turn out?
Will James remain in line for the Crown?
Will Amelia mentally buckle under the weight of the pressure of the Crown if he doesn't?
Will Ben leave James if he takes the throne?
Will Ben be the same man if he stays?
The author wrote the suspense of these questions effortlessly. And the epilogue was the icing on the cake. I loved the model she used. Very well done and highly recommend!

James, the Prince of Wales is relieved to finally be “out” but his future isn’t exactly certain. Right now, he’s the Prince Regent and is able to protect himself, Ben and his sister, but if his scheming uncle has anything to say about the line of succession, James could be out.
And his lover, Ben Dahan isn’t quite so certain about his future either. He absolutely adores James; is in love with him actually, but he isn’t quite so enamored with the public eye. Especially when it appears he’s now the butt of jokes and his privacy is completely compromised. Is love enough to stand by the Prince’s side? Will James’ future become a choice between life with Ben or the crown?
Gah. I L-O-V-E-D this book, and this series! I cannot get enough of James and Ben. They’re so amazing together. Both just trying to live an open and loving life, trying to stay one step ahead of the paparazzi and the foolishness of some of the Royal Family over the revelation that James is gay. Also, James and Ben have never really been in a long term relationship. They don’t quite know how to act, how to communicate, how to just try to keep going, but they’re learning.
I loved the growth in their relationship—working through the feelings of isolation in Ben, the concerns over whether James will ascend to the throne, and especially their shared concern over James’ sister, Amelia.
Much of the comedic relief in His Royal Favorite comes in the form of the craziness of the Royal Family and their rigidity and great dislike of change. I think my favorite side character is the Queen—she’s a piece of work all by herself! ~ Missy, 5 stars

My GR friends will hate me.
You know how some times we say "maybe it's me, not the book" but what we mean is "the book is shit, and I'm right"? Yeah, this is NOT one of these times. I know that this is a good series, but it just doesn't appeal to me.
Unless it's a favorite author, I rarely read series with established couples because I get so bored. That's exactly what happened here. I didn't love the first book to begin with, and this one just made me so.freaking.bored.
But really, it's me, NOT the book.

Royally good
This was the second half of the Royal series and really the official part of the relationship for James & Ben. It was a great addition watching them adjust to their struggles, difficulties and create a lasting relationship. Great series

Book two was not for the lighthearted at all!!! It was super emotional and way more angsty!!! GAH. I dislike angst and reading this is why. In my head Ben would have got over himself 20% into the story. I get it, and understand ALL his reservations but I totally was being #TeamJames over here and wanted him to sacrifice his freedom for James. It didn't work like that, and man this book did wonders to my emotions. I feel like I need a palate cleanser and need to read a comfort read or some fluff afterwards.
This picks up immediately after book two. I almost want it to be a trilogy because I like these two characters so much. I think the author handled this wonderfully. Nothing was easy to any of the characters to me. Both guys were constantly tested, it really made them put their future in perspective. I couldn't imagine living like that, and too see Ben trying should have been enough for me. I really like Ben alot, he's independent, career-orientated, and self reliant. To see him part ways with the pieces that he feels makes him about did me in. I'd understood the resentment and the falling apart from one another.I think James was one of the realistic guys ever. Yeah he lived in a bubble, and doesn't have a debit card, but he constantly gave Ben an out. He was willing to allow the love of his life, a life instead of being in the media spotlight constantly.
On top of those two, Indigo's mental health status has reached a boiling point. I felt for James, because he's rolling solo on this. He has no help, he has no training and he's trying to do what he thinks is the best of her. Bravo Ben!!! Thank you for saying what I'm sure everyone reading is thinking. We can't help Indigo without professionals, and it's time to allow someone else to take over the reigns for a little while.
I did find myself less enamored with this then book one. It was tamer in the physical acts, it was way angstier I ever would have expected. It didn't have the same magic as book one, but I guess you could say it was the honeymoon period for those guys and they needed a break. I'm looking forward to more from this author. This series is one I'd definitely recommend!

So that was really good. Much better than I expected after book one, and when you put both books together it makes a fantastic read. There was much more angst than the first, but our heroes get through it, amidst a bunch of tears, questions and heartbreak. There love always wins out, and that ending was perfect. Recommend this for sure.

After feeling rather underwhelmed with the first book, His Royal Secret, I thought this follow-up was an improvement. I definitely liked it better.
First, I thought that it was more focused on situation on hand, namely the repercussion of James coming out as gay man as well as Ben stepping up and revealing himself as the Prince's partner. I could felt the struggle from Ben, having to deal with the lost of his privacy, including when the paps digging the pictures of his parents' crime scene photo (they were involved in car crash). I also felt the sex scenes didn't disturb the flow like it did in the first book.
I could feel Ben's blues and his continued conflict of whether his love was enough to make him stay beside James forever or would he preferred the freedom better and walked out from everything. I thought Pace wrote this part in a compelling manner. It felt real and believable.
And how amusing it was that Ben became the favorite of the Queen? *laugh*
I loved the development with Indigo. It was a serious case and I was glad that they finally took that step to help her.
Unfortunately, the story still felt dragging and repetitive at some parts. This one was longer than the first book, and at times I was itching to skim things.

When I finished book one I really didn’t think I needed to read book two. Since there was no cliffhanger ending, the ending was enough, in a way. Although the story was not fully wrapped up, it was a HFN sort of ending. But I felt guilty and wanted to see this series through.
In HRF, James and Ben are gearing up to face the public as an out & proud couple. James has the worry of whether the church will accept and back him along with the fear of what being so public will do to Ben.
Soooo.... Although the writing was great, this book just wasn’t for me. I needed more drama and really think that the story stretched a bit and might have been more enjoyed had it been a single novel vs a duet.
