Michael Bond, CBE was an English children's author. He was the creator of Paddington Bear and wrote about the adventures of a guinea pig named Olga da Polga, as well as the animated BBC TV series The Herbs. Bond also wrote culinary mystery stories for adults featuring Monsieur Pamplemousse and his faithful bloodhound, Pommes Frites.
I've use this book in my classroom for 3 objectives. First, I use it to teach math: Paddington makes 6 sandwiches and we subtract one each time an animal gets it. Second, it's great for science: learning about all the zoo animals. Third, we can learn manners: Paddington didn't mind that the parrot got a sandwich because it said, "Thank you."
In this adventure Paddington visits London Zoo and he takes with him six marmalade sandwiches. But when he gets there the gatekeeper will not let him and Jonathan and Judy in as he tells them 'No pets allowed.' Paddington takes exception to this remark and Judy tells him, 'He's one of the family.' Disarmed by Paddington's hard stare, the gatekeeper relents and allows them in.
And once inside that is when Paddington's troubles begin. Having his photograph taken with a parrot he discovers that the parrot likes marmalade sandwiches and consequently he pinches bites from the one under Paddington's hat.
Then when they are viewing the Siberian Wild Dogs, the dogs let out a mighty 'Owwowwwowwwoo!' and Paddington jumps in fright and the rest of the sandwich that the parrot had nibbled at flies into the cage.
Then Jonathan wants a picture of Paddington with a donkey so Paddington mounts and is taken for a ride; the donkey sees Paddington's sandwiches, cries 'Hee! Haw!' and snaffles one out of his bag. Judy points out that two sandwiches are gone and Paddington has not eaten any!
When viewing the elephants, the mother elephant makes a loud trumpeting noise, 'Whoooohoowooo!', and reaches down to steal another marmalade sandwich; three have now disappeared.
Worse is to follow for when visiting the lion, who sees them coming and gives a mighty roar, 'Grrrrrrrrahh!', Paddington is so scared he drops one of his sandwiches on the ground and before he can pick it up a group of pigeons gather and eat it up.
At the penguin pool, the penguins looked so sad as if they are all dressed up and have nowhere to go so Paddington feels sorry for them and throws them a sandwich, much to the chagrin of the keeper. He tells Paddington, 'Penguins eat fish. It is strictly forbidden to give them marmalade sandwiches.' The keeper takes Paddington to show him a notice stating this fact and while Paddington is reading it the keeper steals the final sandwich for himself.
By this time Paddington is hungry, 'I need my elevenses,' he says, adding, 'Zoos make you hungry. Besides nothing more can happen to me now.' How wrong he is for, just to round things off, the nearby goat eats his sandwich bag! 'Time to go home,' says Paddington ruefully.
A few days later Judy shows Paddington the photographs she has taken and tells Paddington he can have one for his scrapbook. He chooses the one with the parrot for he says, 'At least he said "thank you" when he ate my marmalade sandwich. That's more than any of the others did.'
But all in all it was a fun day out at the zoo and reminds me of my first visit to London Zoo when my Dad took me to see the Chi Chi the giant panda - it must have been early 1959 as Chi Chi arrived at London Zoo in September 1958 - and I well remember us standing around the pit that he was in for ages because he would not come out of his house! He did so eventually by which time I was with Paddington 'Time to go home!'
I really enjoyed Paddington at the Zoo. To me it's funny and adorable. For me Paddington will always be iconic. Something ordinary magical. He makes the ordinary magical. That's why I love the Paddington series and why it's one of my favourites.
(With CD) Beautifully illustrated and a jolly little story, albeit rather a short, slight one that will amuse only the very youngest of readers, briefly. The CD lasts for 14 minutes, with Jim Broadbent reading the story wonderfully well, twice, so you can read along with him the second time. As such, even at a very leisurely pace, with incidental music, it hardly takes 7 minutes to read this book through. If it was 3 or 4 times as long, it would've been delightful. As it is, it's just nice, useful for those learning to read, but really rather too short. 4.25/5
This is rather funny as most animals in the zoo couldn’t resist Paddington’s marmalade sandwiches. The one about the penguin seems like dressing up for a party but really they have nowhere to go got me laughing inside. I like Paddington.
Judy and Jonathan take Paddington to the zoo. He brings six marmalade sandwiches, which get stolen or given away, making him unhappy. My 2 1/2 year old daughter seems to love it. She likes that Paddington meets penguins, and she asked for marmalade sandwiches.
Now this is more like it, none of that Palace nonsense.
The Paddington tales are at their best when focusing on the joy and discovery of a child (or indeed, a bear). In his adventure at the zoo Paddington reveals that wonder and curiosity that have made him such a beloved character.
Felt like this Paddington book could of been alot longer as my little man was enjoying it. He felt it was a bit short but either way he did enjoy it. Paddington is still his favourite bear.
