Abby Klein was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She earned her teaching credentials at Dartmouth College, where she majored in psychology and education. She then went on to earn her master's degree in reading and language development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Currently she teaches in the same public elementary school she attended as a child in the Los Angeles area. She has been a kindergarten and first-grade teacher there for more than fifteen years and is very involved in the school community, as both a teacher and a parent. Her two young children also attend the school where she teaches. In addition, she is a “teacher-leader” in her district, and over the years, she has presented many staff development workshops both at the district level and at her school site that centered on reading, writing, and literacy. She has been a presenter at national conferences as well.
In her first published series, Ready, Freddy!, Klein brings just the right amount of true-to-life humor and drama. She brings young readers a fresh voice, a great sense of humor, and a unique perspective on the trials and tribulations of first grader Freddy Thresher. Utterly authentic and drawn from real experience in the classroom, Abby Klein knows exactly what first graders are thinking.
She lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband, two children, and three dogs. She thinks there's nothing better than a good book, and she loves reading aloud to children.
I'm not sure I understand the shark theme, with "FIN" hidden in each interior illustration. I guess this is covered in earlier books?
OTHER than that, it's a cute story that anyone can read by itself, focusing on making friends (and bets) and the hazards of gambling (although this is about as low-stakes as gambling gets, considering all the friend has to do is have Freddy sit through the hayride). I can't identify with it much myself, since I never made bets as a kid, or if we did, nobody held up any end of the deal.
Cute art, plus the hidden "FIN" in each picture is a fun bonus!
Review by an 8 year old: This book is pretty crazy. I thought it was going to be scary but it's not. I learned to not be afraid, but if you are, be brave and tell your friends the truth. I liked this book.
Summary: The Halloween carnival is supposed to be a blast, but when Freddy gets caught in the middle of a bet, Freddy fears the Halloween carnival will no longer be fun for him. Josh, one of Freddy's best friends, and Max, the biggest bully in the second grade, bet on Freddy going on the Haunted Hayride, the scariest attraction at the Halloween carnival. Freddy has always been too afraid, but he doesn't tell Josh because he doesn't want Josh to stop being his friend. As the Halloween carnival comes and the Haunted Hayride draws nearer, Freddy grows more anxious and unsure. Will he actually be brave enough to go on the Haunted Hayride and help his friend win the bet against the biggest bully in the second grade?
Questions: 1. What do you think would've happened if Freddy was honest with Josh and told him he was too afraid to go on the Haunted Hayride?
2. Rewrite the ending of the story and reverse the roles of the winner and the loser of the bet. How would the new winner act toward the new loser?
3. What is your opinion of Max and why do you feel that way about him?
4. Invent your own attraction at the Halloween carnival. Do you think Freddy and his friends would enjoy playing there, based on their interests?
5. How would you have reacted to Max's bullying in this story? Would you have stood up to him the way Josh and Jessie did, or would you have held your tongue like Freddy and Chloe? Explain why.
