All the missing victims of North Carolina’s deadliest serial killer have been found, all except Rachel Smith. When the FBI produces a photo proving Rachel is alive and well in Texas, one case is closed but another one is opened. Either this is a case of mistaken identity or there are more people than just Sloan Jordan and Warren Parish who seem to walk the earth without a soul.

Along with Detective Nathan McNamara, Sloan and Warren travel south to find Rachel and solve the biggest mystery of all: determining who—or what—they really are.

She what?! Dropping that bomb on the last page of the book is not fair.

I’m going to have to start covering up gray in your hair soon if you don’t cool it with all the intergalactic drama you seem to get yourself into.”
“That’s the freaking truth.” I sighed.

Sloan and Warren are starting to find out more about who and what they are exactly in this book, but for every answer they get, they have 5 more questions to ask. We also see more of their abilities, and they even start to be able to do more things as they practice together. Sloan also discovers the identity of her birth mom and plans to meet with her, and let's just say that, in typical Sloan fashion, things don't go as planned. Between a search for a woman who might be just like Sloan and Warren, a vacation to Texas with Nathan and Shannon, and unraveling a sex trade scheme, Sloan, Nathan, and Warren do not have the time to get bored.

Again, this book is full of action, funny moments, and romance. There is still a more "police intrigue" side, but it takes less room than in the first book, as The Siren focuses more on Sloan and Warren's origins, their powers, and the characters' dynamics and relationships.

Adrianne rolled her wheelchair closer and pointed at me. “You just hugged Shannon Green.”
“And neither of them burst into flames. Aren’t you shocked?” Warren teased.

Surprisingly, Shannon was a part of this book, but I don't think it will last, sadly for her. It was funny to see her and Sloan interact and try to be nice to each other, and even though she was not present for the whole book, I like the "forgiving/second chance" vibe that it brought to this book.

There was a fine line between admiration and loathing between Warren and Nathan. They secretly liked each other, but with me in the middle, they would never admit it. Warren and I were together, but there was a very gray area with Nathan McNamara. And everyone knew it.

I love the complex romantic feelings between Sloan, Warren, and Nathan, even though I know that many readers don't enjoy it. I find it amazing how they are all so mature: Nathan wants Sloan to be happy and he's okay with her being with Warren, he's even becoming friend with him, and Warren want Sloan to take some time to think about her feelings for Nathan because he wants her to be 100% sure about their relationship... I'm honestly impressed that the author managed to make their dynamic funny and realistic, and it still remains an almost love triangle.

“Three’s a crowd, babe,” he responded.
Warren leaned his mouth close to the microphone. “I heard that. You’re not allowed to call her babe, Nate.”
“Hi, Warren,” Nathan said. “Sloan, let me know how it goes.” He raised his voice. “Maybe you can come over when you get back and tell me about it over dinner and a bottle of wine!”
“I’ll bring the dessert!” Warren replied.
I rolled my eyes.”

Again, I know not everyone enjoys it, and many are saying that Sloan is stringing Nate along (but he does know how she feels about Warren, and she made it clear that she chose Warren, anyway...), but I just love their interaction so much. The sass, the sarcasm, the sweetness- I love the three of them together. I love both guys, and I wouldn't be able to pick one, honestly. They're both sweet and kind and brave and fiercely protective and perfect...

Next, he turned to Nathan. “Come home safe, brother,” Nathan said. Warren pulled him into a tight hug. It was odd seeing the two of them embrace. Odd, and perfect.
“Take care of her for me,” Warren said when he stepped away. “Keep your damn hands to yourself, but take care of her.”
Nathan laughed. “I will.”
Warren gave me a warning glare. “Don’t let her run off and get herself into a shit-load of trouble while I’m gone.”
I held up my hands. “I don’t do that!”
“Right,” the three of them said at the same time.

The ending is a mild cliffhanger, but by now, I just love those three too much to do anything besides running to get the third book. The plot is not the most developed, but it is still very entertaining and engaging, and we can’t help but fall in love with the characters.

3.5 Stars. Sloane was more of a whiny teenage brat than a 27 year old in this book. The hypocrisy of her leading on Nate while at the same time advising him he shouldn't do the exact same thing to his girlfriend was a hard pill to swallow. I can't believe how much I loved the first book and this was the follow up.

3.5 I like it but I don't think it was as good as the first book. The love triangle seems a little over board and the plot was a little more jagged and didn't flow as well; still plan on reading the final book to wrap up the story.

This is a great series! You should read the books in order. In this book Sloane and Warren find out more about who and what they are. Nathan helps them solve one case which leads to another. The book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but there is a little something that makes you want to start reading the next book immediately.

I posted 5 stars for the first book in this series and I'm here to do the same for the second - a great achievement for a sequel.
There are no serial killers this time around, although the story starts out with the discovery that one of the supposed victims from the first book is alive and well, and living in Texas. She also appears to be akin to Sloane and Warren, in supernatural terms, which means they just have to go find her, in hopes that she knows more about what they are than they do.
Although the plot initially seems a bit secondary to the development of the characters and their relationships, the writing is so good it just drags you in without letting you notice the passage of time: excellent dialogue, great visual imagery, wonderfully complex (and realistic) characterisation – my perfect read. Mix in a little paranormal mystery, and I’m already anticipating the next one not so patiently.
I’m not going to go into the plot, as that’s tricky to do without spoilers, so suffice it to say there is more of the supernatural this time around, plus a rollercoaster of emotional events, and the ending, while wrapping this story line up satisfactorily, opens up a whole new vista for future books. I’ll just say angels and demons, so you get a little of the flavour of which type of supernatural this series involves, so if you like your novels with huge depth of character, sexy but sensitive men, lighter on the fantasy side, and in a contemporary setting, then this series is most definitely for you.

Overall it was a good book. The progression of the story went well. The MC's character showed a lot more change. The backstory developed more and we were given a lot more insight into the characters.

PROS:
- Lot more information was given about the abilities, back stories, and why things progressed as they did.
- We met a lot of new characters that seemed intertwined and as the story progressed, the reasons came into focus.
- There was a lot of gray area when it came to 'good' and 'evil' characters.
- MC developed her abilities and was getting better at her powers.
- Shannon was treated badly but in the end Sloan did treat her a bit better.

CONS:
- The stupid love triangle continued. I still don't understand why Warren and Nathan both had to be in the picture at once.
- Poor Shannon! The author punishes the girl just because she's a bit more girly. Newsflash, getting nails done and enjoying the process doesn't make someone a bad person.
- The biggest bad was a woman (so typical)!

The Siren (Soul Summoner #2) by Elicia Hyder

2nd in the series. Read Soul Summoner first to get the full back story.
In this book, Sloan and Warren find out more about themselves and their abilities while working with Nathan to find missing Rachel Smith.

Thriller, sci-fi and a bit of romance. Definitely more supernatural than the first book plus the triangle remains strong. Fast moving, great character development and some funny moments with Sloan. Some sad moments too.

I look forward to reading more of this series.

This was nice. There still was love triangle between Nathan, Warren and Sloan, but it was bit more interesting. Their group dynamic was thrilling. Even though constant hesitating was a bit frustrating too. I liked Shannon here, I wish she would be like Caroline in Vampire diaries (tv-show) or Cordelia in Buffy the Slayer (tv-show), where side character grew up very likeable and interesting woman. Sadly it seems to be opportunity missed.
Sloan was still quite a selfish girl, but she seems to be growing and realising how ass she sometimes is. Nathan..is also ass. I mean they are funny sometimes, but not likeable persons. They almost deserves each others. But Warren, I love Warren. He is my favourite character.

I did like the thing that evil characters were actually doing evil things. Not like I enjoyed that sfuff, but at least evil ones are real enemy, not just scowling with empty words -type.

Again cliffhanger, as expected. It could have been a bit better builded up, but at least it was suprising.

I truly have enjoyed this book throughout. Although the beginning was a little slow, the rest of the story had great measured pacing. The characters’ witty banter made me giggle on more than one occasion. I even managed to laugh at the saddest times, oddly enough. To be honest, I feel that the author managed to create very fun characters and they really work well together. The universe is interesting and the mystery is always there to unravel.
The love triangle continues. I didn’t know how Sloan would continue the relationship between Nathan and Warren. Secretly, I’m probably still #teamWarren all the way, though.
In regard to the plot, I found this book to be better than the first instalment. There was a lot of foreshadowing done in the first book which made the sequel even better. It was a pleasure to read this piece and I can’t wait for the next one.

Amazing book. 2nd in The Soul Summoner Series.
After Sloan is brought into help find some missing victims in a serial killers spree things get weird, because one of the victims can't be found. Detective Nathan McNamara knows Sloan can help him find her. She wants nothing more to do with it, well that's until Nathan shows her a photo taken two days ago of a girl which they thought was died.

Is there a chance she could be alive? A picture doesn't lie or does it? As Sloan, her boyfriend Warren, and Nate set off to the last known whereabouts of the victim things get really interesting.

I could not put this book down. So much happens which was really fascinating.
A whole new series and can't wait to see what's next.

Must read.

A little let down after The Soul Summoner

Perhaps it's just because I enjoyed the first book so much that I felt a little let down when starting on The Siren.
Things just seemed to move so slowly with this book, and Sloan seemed to take on this almost whining type of personality that I nearly called time out, but once the "mother dearest" showdown exploded into life we were back on track, and things were making my head spin once again, (in the good way of course) thankfully!
Definitely keen for more.

While not as good book one, this series continues to impress me. I absolutely adore Sloan, Nathan, and Sloan and Nathan. Not ashamed that this series is turning me to into one of those fans that picks "teams" in love triangles. Because Nathan is obviously a million times better. No. Shame.

The Skinny
Sloan and Nate have just survived the most wanted man of North Carolina – a deadly serial killer who “hunts” during hunting season. All of their victims have been found except for one: Rachel Smith. Nathan receives information about Rachel Smith being alive and well in San Antonio, Texas. This opens an entirely new can of worms for the digging duo. While Sloan is still caught in the love triangle between Nathan and Warren, who also has supernatural powers like herself, her high school nemesis – also known as Nathan’s girlfriend – tags along on their revealing trip to Texas to find this woman who also lives without a soul.

While Sloan suffers a barrage of coincidences, Rachel is not who she seems, in more ways than one. Sloan and Warren learn exactly what they are, as well as becoming a large target to other supernaturals. Their relationship is excruciatingly rare. Sloan suffers a major loss, and her father is able to identify Rachel Smith as another person entirely. This takes Sloan and the gang back to Texas again…for the last time.

The Players
Sloan – a twenty-something publicist for the local county with supernatural abilities to summon and heal others

Warren – a twenty-something mercenary for the U.S. government with supernatural abilities to repel and kill others

Nathan – a local detective in the same county offices as Sloan

Shannon – a local traffic reporter for the news station; she is Nathan’s girlfriend and Sloan’s high school nemesis

Adrienne – Sloan’s best friend who is still healing from a major accident

Rachel/Abigail – a timeless individual who assumes an identity to suit her situations

Samael – an Angel of Death

The Quote
I held my hands up and pushed back from the table. “OK. We need to get a few things straight here.” I looked her square in the face. “We’re not just here for some double-date vacation. Nathan is helping me and Warren with finding someone we need to talk to. This is business. So don’t think you and I are going to be part of some kind of wives’ club that gets our nails down while the boys go to work.”

“Don’t make me have my boyfriend shoot you in the face.”

“Hey! Leave room for the Holy Spirit there, McNamara.”

The Highs and Lows
The Love Triangle. It was bad in the first book. It killed me that Sloan picked Warren. I LOVE Nathan, as does both her parents and her friends. They just have this thing. But the second book focused more closely on Sloan and Warren’s relationship, and now I am just as torn as the poor gal herself. I like them both. They are super amazing guys and both very, very sexy. And Sloan is caught in the middle, loving both of them. She’s with Warren, but Nathan makes no qualms that he’d steal her away, despite his girlfriend.

The Church. When they arrive in Texas, Sloan is almost paranoid about going to a Catholic church and learning the truth about angels and demons. The father’s words remain with her, a haunting foreshadowing.

Shannon. She was an unexpected surprise for the trip to Texas. She was also an unexpected surprise. At one point, Sloan has it out and says her peace and then the two get along much better. Shannon is surprisingly smarter than she appears, and helps out in the detectiving department a few times. She also shows measures of kindness and friendship to Sloan. I was not expecting for her to just drop out of the book so suddenly. I kinda started liking her.

The Real Rachel Smith. Rachel Smith is known by four names in the book: as Sarah to Sloan’s father, who had worked with her in Florida in the 1980s; as Rachel Smith to the North Carolina authorities when she went missing; as Abigail Smith, leader of a ministry outreach in San Antonio; but her real name is Kasyade, which means Siren. She is an angel, and Sloan and Warren learn a lot about themselves from her. Although she is integral to the plot, and she does summon Sloan through years of prep work, she is nothing like her title Angel of Life.

Sloan and Warren. After learning everything from Abigail Smith about who and what they are, I could not stop thinking about what that would mean if they had offspring. Apparently angels can only have one child, which definitively rules out if they are related, which was a topic of contension in the first book. If they were to have offspring, could they have more than one since they aren’t full-blooded angels? Since they are two different types of angels, what does that mean if there were a child? Which talents would it inherit? I could not stop thinking about it for the rest of the book. It was always in the back of my mind.

Samael. He is an Angel of Death. When Sloan meets him, she tries to pound him. Despite his title, he is a kind individual. He warns Sloan and Warren of the impending danger against them simply because they are together. He appears twice in the book, but I have the feeling he’ll be back in the third installment. At least I hope so. Angel of Death and all, I still like him.

Nathan. I love the guy so much. He has put his life on the line for Sloan before, and he does it yet again. This time with more serious repercussions. He is also in charge of Sloan while Warren is gone.

Warren’s Job. Warren is leaving soon for an entire year. The first book sets up their relationship and the repercussions when they are apart. He has moved into her house. He’s met her parents. And now he’s leaving for the American government.

The Action. The book is a full storyline full of action. It is not constant, but Hyder knows how to pack the punch when she needs it. I was on the edge of my seat more than once.

The Take-Away
The relationships between Sloan, Warren, and Rachel/Abigail are so complex. It’s heartwarming and deadly. After learning that they are Seramorta, half-human and half-angel, and receiving insight into the angel world, I could not stop thinking about them having a baby and what that would mean. How would that work? Would the baby be and Angle of Death or an Angel of Light? Would it inherit opposite talents from both Sloan and Warren? In the back of my mind I was also wondering about what would happen between Nathan and Sloan once Warren is gone. A year is a long time.

Recommendation – Buy, Borrow or Skip?
BUY IT. The plot is so complex and intriguing. I am craving more about the angel world and what is coming next for Sloan, Warren and Nathan. All of the elements of a strong story with the rollercoaster of ups and downs are all there. Is the next book out yet?

Another good book and excellent narration by Brittany Pressley (audible review)

This wasn't as good as the first book IMO, but it was still good. I liked it. I like the continued discovery of Sloan's abilities. We find out who her mother is. And again some great characters, as well as a couple sad moments.

The story flowed very nicely and is well written. This book is also written in the first person but is delightfully not full of random blah blah blah thoughts YAY. The chemistry between Sloan and Warren is realistic and believable.

I do recommend this series and especially this narrator.

As far as the narration it is fantastic! Love Brittnay Pressley! She has such an amazing voice, she reads with emotion and the men sound like men. She reads with emotion as called for. She is one of my favorite narrators!

I have started the third book already and so far its good too!

4 Stars... Overall, I enjoyed this read and the continued development of our characters... We learn more about the background of Warren and Sloan and their identity in the supernatural world... However, the interplay between Warren, Sloan, and Nathan is becoming somewhat frustrating... This may just be a personal preference, but make a choice already and stop leaning on both of these men... At times, Sloan came across as childish and immature which also annoyed me... I want strength and leadership in my heroines; she leans too heavily on both male leads while maintaining that she is independent... The storyline took a bit to develop and all the pieces to fit; sometimes it appears that moments are random, but the author does eventually pull the story together... I will continue with the series, but I am hoping for some changes:)

Soul Summoner: 2
It's two or three weeks since the last book. This isn't an episodic series which basically starts a new story without much regard for the previous - Sloan and Adrianne are still recovering from events. The wrapup from the last book's case is ongoing. Instead of dragging out the mystery of Sloan's origins and her and Warren's gifts, the author meets it head on and reveals (mostly) all in this book. For a bit, it felt like a completely different style than the first book - sort of like expecting a mystery and ending up with scifi - the switch threw me out of the story. Aside from that, Sloan is still having commitment problems - she's wildly in love with Warren, but she still has eyes for Nathan. Warren is a saint in every aspect - he supports her while she's running thither and yon, he cooks, he gives up a lucrative job opportunity to be with her, he's there for her when her family falls apart, and he's willing to put up with her less than 100% commitment to him, though he's unhappy with it. Sloan on the other hand, is a blubbering mess. Every little emotional upset sends her into tears, it gets more than annoying. I think I'll give the next book a try, but I'm close to giving up on this series.

Angels and more

I’m not one to usually find books/series based around angels to be enjoyable, but this series is certainly the exception. We are reliving deeper into Sloan’s story, and finding more out about her talents.

The love triangle between Sloan, Warren and Nathan is well written. Importantly it doesn’t drown the rest of the story out. I’m really glad as I don’t mind some romance, but it’s not something that I would want as the central focus. Hopefully it will continue on throughout the rest of the series, adding flavour but not overpowered the rest of the story arc.

I’m well invested in this series now, so I’m off to read the next instalment!

The mystery of Sloan and Warren's origins is finally solved, and it is a relief to them both, yet it brings so many more questions and problems.
Being a couple is going to make them a target for evil in a way I am not sure they are ready for.

The Siren was excellent, and I enjoyed all of the revelations. Although I am still annoyed with the fade to black. Yep, I'm not over it. This love triangle between Warren, Sloan and Nathan is getting more and more interesting and I am really surprised the depth of Warrens patience for it. I can't wait to see whom Sloan picks, and I am so torn, can she have both? LOL

I am rating The Siren 4.5 Boundless stars; it was an excellent read, boo on the fade to black.

A solid continuation of where book one left off in which the characters (and the readers) learn more about the origins and abilities of Sloan and Warren. I'm puzzled about where the love triangle may be going, but I trust this will unfold as the series moves along.
