I chose this book somewhat randomly for our church book club. It was on my Kindle; I think because of a good deal on Amazon. The blurb promised a Christian read with a happy ending.

Of course, life isn't so simple. This book challenged my own faith in that I asked myself--would I be strong enough to help someone with such a terrible reputation? Do I listen to the small, still voice of God that closely? I would have to admit the answer is no, to both questions.

There are also challenges in how deep the protagonists are in the Word.

If you don't have a faith, this book may come off as preachy, but I hope you stick with it. It's a feel good book in the end, that lifts you up.

This was a book of faith. Faith that God loves, that He keeps his promises, that He forgives, that He can be trusted, that He has His best in mind for you, even the tough parts, and faith that He takes away ALL your sin and guilt. And best of all…that He wants to know you and be known by you through His Word.

Very good book. If I had one issue with it, it would be that it was a bit long. Filling in with so much makes it a bit eye-rolly at times. But the story moves along at a decent pace and ends in such a sigh-worthy way.

The narrator Eve Passeltiner is not bad, just odd inflections at times, ways that people don’t usually speak. I have to give it to her, her men's voices are terrific. I shook my head remembering this was a woman!

Wonderful lessons in this book!

Just not in the mood

Another DNF! My fault not the book's. I got to about 18% then grew tired of the constant, heavy preaching from Akira. I also kinda knew how the plot was gonna go.

I liked Akira somewhat. And Gabe didn't seem like a bad sort. And the setting was intriguing. But ... eh. I'm just so not in the mood for the spiritual content. Will return to this later!

I have long been a Robin Lee Hatcher fan, and I've enjoyed both her historicals and her contemporaries. That said, "The Shepherd's Voice" is probably my favorite of all.

I loved the spiritual thread in this endearing book. Highly recommended!

The Shepherd's Voice by Robin Lee Hatcher resonated deeply with my faith.

Hatcher's portrayal of Christian life is honest, authentic, and relatable, tackling real struggles alongside the joys. Scripture is seamlessly woven in, offering comfort and guidance. The prayers feel like genuine pleas and expressions of gratitude, a conversation seeking solace and guidance directly from God.

This book left me yearning for more from this gifted author.

This RITA Award winning novel holds a special place in my heart. Perhaps that's because it begins with one of my favorite opening lines.

I'm delighted the book is available to readers once again for their Kindles and Kindle apps, as well as in print and audiobook.

I really appreciated the spiritual truths embedded in this story- they came through loud and clear.

I did find the primary characters to be fairly one- dimensional, I think as the result of intending them to portray specific truths and aspects of the gospel. In particular, the heroine seemed too good to be true.

Overall, it was very good and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a gospel- focused read.

This story is not what I would call a romance. There is some romance in the story, but that is not the driving factor of it, nor is it even prominent.
Akira was a little “too good” for me to really feel any connection to her. She is almost perfect, she prays almost all the time and always seems to believe the good in others even if others caution her to be careful. The few times she didn’t know what God was doing she asked and then when He didn’t tell her, she tried to be content to wait.
Gabe was a little more real, but he still felt rather stilted.
I was expecting something to happen as the bad guy wanted Akira’s land, but nothing happened. And nothing happened. And nothing happened. Finally just before the ending something happened.
This story jumps from person to person and from time to time. It had at least 6 different points of view. And when there was a scene break I was never sure if the next scene was just a different point of view, if it took place the next day, the next week, or several weeks later. I think all the jumping around made it hard for me to have any sympathy for any of the characters or really feel like I was in the story.
There is a lot of praying and Scripture quoting in this book, which I don’t object to usually, but several times it felt out of place and “preachy.” This author also used two versions of the Bible which felt a little confusing. One version of the Bible wasn’t even around in 1934.
There were no swear words, and the few kisses were after they were married and were not described. I didn’t really want to know what someone slept in or without.
Would I read this again? Probably not.

Really enjoyed this book! It caught my attention right away and I loved Ms. Hatcher's story line. I personally loved all the scripture and prayer thought the book. It made me rethink how I treat total stangers. I highly recommend this book. In fact, our church is reading this for our book club and I stumbled onto this site looking for discussion questions. Any suggestions?

At first I thought the plot was moving a little quickly. It worked out though, it made sense, and I ended up enjoying the way the romance panned out. I’m happy for all the characters who turned their ways around. Although I hate thinking of the fact that some of those kids will be fighting in WWII. But that’s the beauty of a book, we can stop it wherever and not think about that.

Akira (love that name) finds a stranger on her land in need of food and shelter. She takes in a man, Gabe, with a shady past. Gabe returns home to find forgiveness from his father but instead finds love, and renews his relationship with the Father. Romance, forgiveness and a bit of suspense.

Very sweet!

Christian, clean, faith-filled romance, set in the dust bowl near the great depression. I received my copy for free but the opinion is my own. I wish I could have the pure, simple faith of Akira

A retelling of sorts of the Biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. The story includes romance, crime, desperate souls and evil intent. Setting is Great Depression in a small ranching town in Idaho. Very Scriptural and uplifting.

I had a snowy day and finished this entire book! I really liked the setting of the book; it really took you back to what living during the Great Depression was like. It was clean; no inappropriate love scenes, and not swear words which I can do without when I read a book. I did, however feel like she did focus a lot on scripture and the dialogue with God was a little overboard. I am a spiritual person, but felt like it was just too much at times. I did wish she would have done more with the romance between Akira and Gabe. It didn't really go in to that as much as she could have. But, having said that, I did enjoy it and appreciate that it was a clean and proper romance.

A sweet novel showcasing our heavenly Father's great love

Set in Idaho during the Great Depression. Strong characters drew me in. Gabe, rejected by his earthly father, and having served ten years in prison for murder, returns broken, seeking his father's love and forgiveness. Akira discovers the starving Gabe and even though she knows his reputation, she shows him kindness and the way to acceptance and forgiveness of his heavenly Father. Gabe's father wants her sheep ranch and will let nothing stand in his way of getting what he wants, even using his own son. I found the story heartwarming and believable.

It's not too often that you come across a believable romantic historical that not only compassionately handles injustice within families and within the judicial system but also delves deeply into what it means to go beyond "just being a Christian", so to speak, and living moment-by-moment hearing "the Shepherd's voice" - the Holy Spirit guiding and directly clearly the individual. Never preachy but always richly and realistically spiritual, never over-the-top but highly and truly romantic, this one is a keeper for sure!

Highly recommended for older teens and adults.

SO GOOD! This is one of my new favorite books. I love how Akira is so strong in her faith, in trusting God—and Gabe's story. Choosing to give his life to Jesus to follow and trust Him through the challenges and his anger, not to let his past affect who Gabrial - A strong man of God - is now. There is so much I just can't put into words but this is such an inspiring book to read, I ABSOLUTELY LOVEEE it and recommend it!!!

A Stagnant Faith

Faith that God knows all, is capable of all, and is MY Everlasting Father had been in my heart for most, if not all, of my life. But for the last several years, my husband and I have been laughing off the idea of who has the most and/or the worst medical problems. It has been a cascade of a Series of Unfortunate Events in our lives. All the while, I have tried to keep my eye on God and continue to see the myriad blessings that he poured out upon us. But keeping my eye on God isn't the same as keeping my heart and spirit locked in Him. Then I "accidentally" stumbled upon Hatcher's The Shepherd's Voice. I didn't even remember downloading it, but I somehow opened it instead of the book that I planned to read. As obvious to those who see, there was no series of accidents that led me to this book. Twas God's plan.

My heart is still learning to listen, but instead of my usual fantasy, historical fiction, or LITRPG books, my heart is leading towards other Christian books. Right now, I think I'll focus on Robin Lee Hatcher's books, then I will see where God leads me. But I want to share one thing about the book. If you read with an open mind, or perhaps even a skeptical one, know that the Lord Jesus Christ used Hatcher's own to reach a stagnant prayer warrior, retired too early. Through it, God has given me a purpose again, (taken from me when I lost much of my mind and memory after an accident that ended up costing me my career in teaching my precious alternative students.). Right now, my purpose is simply to learn to lean on God, become His warrior once again, and fill my spirit with His love and peace. May this book be used to reach you as God has reached out to me . . . again.

God driven inspirational romance

I give this book five solid stars because it is well-written, the story is not preachy, the relationships are realistic, and it shows God’s hand in the day-to-day lives of the characters. The Shepherd’s Voice takes place during the Great Depression, in the small town of Ransom, Idaho. The heroine of the story, Akira Macauley, is a plucky, independent redhead who runs a sheep ranch left to her by her grandfather. When she finds an unconscious hobo on her property, she offers him water to drink and moves him into the shade where he passes out. God tells her to bring him home and care for his needs. He wakes up in a bed in her home.

Turns out the man is Gabe Talmadge. He is originally from the town of Ransom, but he’s been gone--in prison for ten years. His father is a wealthy, greedy man who owns the whole town, who has never loved his son. Akira offers Gabe a job on the ranch and a place to live. He accepts and receives so much more. By her example and words, he comes to trust in Lord and his life is changed. Of course, that doesn’t mean all his problems are gone. Everyone in the town knows his past.

I like that the story is realistic rather than a sappy, too-good-to-be-true version of life. The characters experience the whole gambit of emotions as they face trials, difficulties, love, and hope with growing faith. In fact, this is one of those rare books in which I find no fault.

I highly recommend The Shepherd's Voice to anyone who enjoys Inspirational Romance. This story gently carries the message of God’s forgiveness, how to accept it, as well as how to learn to forgive yourself once the sin is confessed. It’s a book you won’t want to put down.

I generally don't prefer to read much in the Romance genre, though after given this book by a dear friend I dove right in. Overall, I feel books like these don't try to capture reality much, especially pertaining to subjects such as the true wrestle with self-denial with God, friendships, and marriage, and how great of humility and commitment to conflict resolution is really required in all of these. I just think it can be dangerous for us to consume too much of romanticized novels. I don't want to be surprised when my relationships, or marriage, doesn't have the happily ever after in every situation. I want to be committed to faithfulness in the midst of grit that WILL come.
All that said, I also appreciate books like these in some ways, because painting a picture of the beauty of what COULD be in relationships, a high, biblical, standard, is important.
I guess I just prefer to see more of a balance within the story.

So there's my bias disclaimer😂 As far as this book, The Shepherd's Voice, in particular: The pacing of events as well as character development was so lightning fast, it was disorienting and frustrating to read at times.
Sort of relating to above - but I also think the protagonist, Akira, was disconcertingly perfect; I do believe a realistic faith includes a fair share of wrestle, and I longed to see that in this book.

It was an encouraging read in terms of a visual of what grace in action can look like and the massive impact it can have, and that is always worth a round of applause and a big "thank you" from me. If a book inspires me to reflect on the grace of Jesus, and that in turn grows a desire to APPLY: to spend more time with Him and love like Him that same day, it has my appreciation.

Thank you for the read, Mrs. Hatcher!

This is a story that will linger in your mind long after you finish reading the last page.

Set in the 1930s during the Great Depression, The Shepherd’s Voice begins with a bleak landscape for the hero, Gabe. But the theme of hope quickly emerges, along with faith and love.

Gabe. He and Akira were delightful characters, the type that you could feel deeply for. Along with them, a host of side characters made for a story filled with people to cheer for–or hope for the downfall of, depending on which side they fell on.

Note: The antagonist really was the type to give you chills.

The plot progressed in a natural, but page-turning way. One plot thread involves a twist on the parable of the prodigal son story, and exploring the “what-ifs” of that was a pleasure.

Robin Lee Hatcher brings a depth of faith to this book. One point that she covers beautifully is how becoming a Christian doesn’t instantly change us. Throughout the story, the hero struggles with transforming his thinking so that it aligns with God’s Word. The way that he sees himself and others around him is tainted by lies that he needs to release as he grows in his understanding of God’s Word and listens to the voice of the Great Shepherd. As I finished the book, I wanted to fill my head with Scripture so that I believe truth, not the lies of this world.

If you love stories with a rich historical setting, characters to love, a villain to despise, and a strong dose of faith content, give The Shepherd’s Voice a try. You’ll be glad you did. I know that this is one book that will be on my favorites list for 2024.

Gabe Talmadge, coming home after 10 years in prison, is rescued by sheep farm owner Akira Macauley after he collapsed on the road. Much to his surprise, Akira gives him a chance to work on her farm after his own cruel father refuses to have anything to do with him, much to the concern of her friends. Akira, however, is convinced that Gabe was sent to her by God for a purpose, and she trusts that He knows what is best.
A Christian story set in the time of the Great Depression in America, this to me was like a fairytale, with if not unrealistic, at least very unlikely characters and events - and still, I absolutely loved it, it was sweet and heartwarming, like covering yourself in a warm blanket on a cold night and feeling comfortable.
Gabe's journey from guilt ridden convict to a God loving person warms a reader's heart, Akira was just really way too good to be true, but in her constant love and trust in God a protagonist you just had to fall in love with. The events unfolding and the plots of his cruel father test Gabriel and the budding romance between him and his employer to the utmost.
The story is very well told, with strong and well developed protagonists, and very likeable ones, and has captivated me from the first page; even if a reader is not as strong in faith as Akira and her friends, some of their reactions and thoughts will be familiar enough to follow and understand why they acted a certain way - and made me wish to be a better person.
Absolutely loved this book, and hope to find more of this author.

A truly unique story!

The Author’s goal for this novel was stated in the endnotes: “The Shepherd’s Voice was born out of the desire to remind believers that God’s forgiveness isn’t just for the moment a person is born again.” That goal was completely reached! The story vividly portrayed a Christian’s ability to return to the Heavenly Father in repentance and be accepted by God and forgiven. It also demonstrates what a life would look like that is lived by faith, walking with God every day through life’s trials, and a soul resting in the Word of God in quiet assurance of His plan and purpose.

It is not the usual romance where instant love/attraction happens. This plot is built first on showing God’s kindness to those in need, helping their body and soul heal, reminding others of God’s everlasting love, giving second chances, and letting God work out the feelings in His way.

It reminds us that evil is very much present in a Christian’s life and, just because you know Jesus as Saviour, that doesn’t keep you from getting hurt by that evil. God lets these things happen to strengthen our faith in Him.

The negative reviews kept me for a while from reading this novel, but I’m so glad I finally read it. I was challenged: Does my life revolve around God’s Word? Is it the most important thing in my life? Definitely worth the time spent reading.

A Man with a Past...
For ten years, Gabe Talmadge languished in prison, convicted of a horrible crime. Now, he is free once again but unable to find work in the midst of the Great Depression. In desperation, Gabe returns to Ransom, Idaho, hoping that his uncaring father will give him food and shelter, if not love. But the prodigal son is not welcomed home. Hudson Talmadge, who virtually owns the town of Ransom, despises his youngest son as much as ever-and Gabe is as powerless to win his father's approval as when he was a child.

A Man with a Future...
Hungry and hopeless, Gabe is rescued by the owner of a sheep ranch south of Ransom. Incredibly, Akira Macauley gives him a place to live and work to do. More than that, she gives him hope that he can receive forgiveness for his past-and perhaps even love.

A Man with a Choice...
But just as Gabe comes to believe that happiness may be within his grasp, tragedy strikes Ransom once more. As his life begins to unravel, Gabe must either sink again into an abyss of hopelessness or cling to a hope, faith, and love stronger than any he has ever known.

An awesome prodigal son story

I couldn't put this book down. As an inspirational author myself, I am drawn to other stories that portray us in our human struggles to find and know God. This book did that handsomely in a rich tale of how a human father's failure to receive his son led that son to find and be received by his.heavenly Father. I have one ccriticism--it's what caused me to rate it four, rather than five, stars. The references to scripture were too heavy-handed. I understand that, being set in the era of the Great Depression allowed for more "Bible thumping" than had it been set later, but it was still too much. I was nearly turned off by it, and I completely understand the LOVE behind it. However, I feel those of us who write for (and with) God, need to do so in a way that might draw others who don't know that LOVE in, not push them away. Other than that, I felt the story was beautifully crafted.

Wow! What a story

I haven’t read such a great story in a long time. I
literally couldn’t stop reading this book. I hated for the story to end but it ended well. This was a story of two strangers finding love and intertwined into the story was the message of God’s unending love and forgiveness.
Robin always makes her stories relatable to life today. She touched on a subject I have trouble with and that is the fact that long after we have asked God for his forgiveness of something we did, God immediately forgives us but that we keep holding onto the guilt of our wrong actions. There were many interesting characters in this book, most good and some bad. The fact that God can reach those lost in despair was one of the main themes and I found it uplifting to see these people
learn there is a better way to live by letting Jesus into your heart and life. The story itself was outstanding and I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I start by saying that I really enjoyed this book. This, in spite of the fact that I am not a fan of the Christian romance genre. But the writing was excellent, and that goes a long way with me. It worked well because of the strength of the characters. I enjoyed "hearing" their thoughts because it felt like my own thoughts were being exposed. There was a lot of scripture, but that isn't a bad thing because it does give you an opportunity to see how the truth of scripture relates to "real life" - well, the real life of a fiction book. There was enough tension in the drama of the conflicts, without it being too much - so the book was played out well on several levels.
Having said that it didn't go deep enough for me to consider this a classic worth re-reading. But it was thoroughly enjoyable and just the type of book that we need once in a while. Best of all, it challenged me spiritually, to walk, as the characters did, by faith and intimacy with God.

Powerful and poignant, but...

This story was a resounding 5+ up until the rather brief epilogue. While the epilogue is good, in truth I didn't get from it what I think the author meant to impart because my disappointment at the lack of closure was rather intense, to put it mildly. The father is a central character from beginning to the last chapter. Then nothing. What happened to him? Would have been nice to know what happened to Pauline too for that matter. And Danny, for what he did. This is such an amazing story that has kept me reading till the wee hours of the morning. The message of God's amazing love and forgiveness is beautiful. But the lack of closure, basically it just looks like all the guilty one's got away with everything they did, is most disturbing. There was no justice. I really battled with that. So yes, a beautiful story but feels incomplete ..
