Juliet Blackwell (aka Julie Goodson-Lawes, aka Hailey Lind) started out life in Palo Alto, California, born of a Texan mother and a Yankee father. The family soon moved to what were, at the time, the sticks of Cupertino, an hour south of San Francisco. Walking to and from kindergarten every day she would indulge in her earliest larcenous activity: stealing walnuts and apricots from surrounding orchards.

By the time she graduated middle school, the orchards were disappearing and the valley at the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay had become the cradle of the silicon semi-conductor. A man named Steve Jobs was working in his garage in Cupertino, just down the street. Juliet's father advised his daughters to enter the lucrative and soon-to-flourish field of computers.

"Bah" said Juliet, as she went on to major in Latin American Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (they had, by far, the best parties of any department). Rather than making scads of money in computers, she read, painted, learned Spanish and a little French and Vietnamese, lived in Spain and traveled through Europe, Mexico, and Central America. She had a very good time.

Juliet pursued graduate degrees in Anthropology and Social Work at the State University of New York at Albany, where she published several non-fiction articles on immigration as well as one book-length translation. Fascinated with other cultural systems, she studied the religions, folklore and medical beliefs of peoples around the world, especially in Latin America. Juliet taught the anthropology of health and health care at SUNY-Albany, and worked as an elementary school social worker in upstate New York. She also did field projects in Mexico and Cuba, studied in Spain, Italy, and France, worked on a BBC production in the Philippines, taught English as a second language in San Jose, and learned how to faux finish walls in Princeton, New Jersey. After having a son, moving back to California, and abandoning her half-written dissertation in cultural anthropology, Juliet started painting murals and portraits for a living. She has run her own mural/faux finish design studio in Oakland, across the bay from San Francisco, for more than a decade. She specializes in the aesthetic renovation of historic homes.

Finally, to round out her tour of lucrative careers, Juliet turned to writing. Under the pseudonym of Hailey Lind, Juliet penned the Art Lover's Mystery Series with her sister Carolyn, about an ex-art forger trying to go straight by working as a muralist and faux finisher in San Francisco. The first of these, Feint of Art, was nominated for an Agatha Award; Shooting Gallery and Brush with Death were both IMBA bestsellers, and Arsenic and Old Paint is now available from Perseverance Press.

Juliet's Witchcraft Mystery series, about a witch who finally finds a place to fit in when she opens a vintage clothes shop on Haight Street in San Francisco, allows Juliet to indulge yet another interest—the world of witchcraft and the supernatural. Ever since her favorite aunt taught her about reading cards and tea leaves, Juliet has been fascinated with seers, conjurers, and covens from many different cultures and historic traditions. As an anthropologist, the author studied and taught about systems of spirituality, magic, and medicine throughout the world, especially in Latin America. Halloween is by far her favorite holiday.

When not writing, painting, or haranguing her funny but cynical teenaged son, Juliet spends a lot of time restoring her happily haunted house and gardening with Oscar the cat, who ostensibly belongs to the neighbors but won't leave her alone. He started hanging around when Juliet started writing about witches...funny coincidence.

This is the seventh book in the Haunted Home Renovation series, starring Mel Turner, renovator extraordinaire. Her unique specialties are restoring historic places around the San Francisco area, communicating with ghosts, and solving murder mysteries that frequently pop up on her construction sites.

I greatly enjoyed Mel’s latest project, the restoration of a lighthouse and its keeper’s house in San Francisco Bay. The rich history and romance of lighthouses are fascinating, though tragedy and grief are parts of their past too, as Mel quickly discovers.

There are really two mysteries in this book to solve. The first involves the death of Mel’s friend Alicia’s ex-husband, an abusive jerk who shows up on the island unexpectedly and takes a fatal tumble down the lighthouse stairs. The second (and my favorite mystery) is about the mournful ghost who haunts the tower. Hers is a heart-wrenching story, and I easily got into the research Mel had to do to get all the pieces to fit.

A GHOSTLY LIGHT is an enjoyable cozy with likable characters, and the paranormal element makes it even more intriguing. I’ve read one previous book in this series, so I knew some of the backstory, but I think you’d be fine jumping in here.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

There are really two mysteries in this book. The first involves the death of Mel’s friend and Alicia’s ex-husband, who was absolutely an abusive, unlikeable, jerk that shows up on the island unexpectedly and takes a fatal tumble down the lighthouse stairs. I had to say good riddance! The second, and my favorite, was about the mournful ghost who haunts the lighthouse tower. Her story is sad, but I was especially interested in the research that Mel had to do to get all the pieces to finally fit together. As I've said before, I'm not crazy about cozies, but they don't use up many brain cells and gives the mind a rest:) This is an enjoyable story with extremely likable characters.... except for the dead guy. I love most anything that's paranormal and, in this case, that helps to make the story more intriguing. I’ve read one previous book in this series, so I already knew some of the backstory, but I think the books can easily be read in any order.

Mel Turner is a general contractor who restores and renovates historic houses and buildings in the Oakland/San Francisco area. She has taken over the business from her father. In this 7th book, her business has been hired to restore a lighthouse and the lightkeeper's house. The house will be an inn. The lighthouse is close to San Quentin.

A murder takes place early in the book when body comes tumbling down the steps of the lighthouse. It is not an accident as there is a knife in the body. Mel's friend who hired her for the job is a main suspect. There are several ghosts on the island.

I pre-ordered this book as I like the series very much. When thinking about why I like it above some other cozy mysteries, there are several reasons. First is the character of Mel Turner. She is nontraditional and humorous. I really like the family scenes when Mel, Caleb (her stepson) , Mel's boyfriend, Stan (a family friend) and Doug/Dog gather for a meal in Mel's dad kitchen. Mel's dad can really cook up a storm. There is always room for anyone else who drops in. Many do drop in and they are always welcome. It has a very cozy family feel to it.

I did not have the mystery solved as to who the murderer was and other questions about what happened to a five year old boy from the past until the author disclosed it. The book is a light paranormal. I think all series are best when read in order but I think you could jump in with this book and not feel lost. The author does a good job of updating the readers. I am looking forward to the next book.

Oh this book I could not put it down! Juliet Blackwell has a must read book you will want to read this summer! This book had everything this cozy mystery lover could want! In A Ghostly Light, Juliet Blackwell took everything I love in a great cozy and surpassed my expectations of a great book. Wonderful read for a reader who loves light houses, ghost stories, mysteries and delightful endings! Take this book to the beach with you this summer or like me to a lighthouse. I have read one or two in this series and while I enjoyed them, this one stood out most for me as it hit on something I love so dearly which is preservation of lighthouses. This story was so inspiring, the mystery so captivating and the characters both alive and dead so relatable! This is a book I would buy for my friends just so we could talk about the story together! This series is a book clubs delight, this story a crown jewel. This book is out June 27th.

A Ghostly Light is the seventh book in the A Haunted Home Renovation Mystery series.

Alicia has contracted with Mel Turner to renovate a lighthouse and convert the keeper’s house into a B&B. Mel is surprised when she sees Alicia coming her way with a burly bodyguard and soon learns that Alicia’s ex-husband, Thorn who has been abusive in the past, has learned where she is. A little later Mel heads to the lighthouse to see if she can overcome her fear of heights. As she starts up the circular stairway, she meets the dead body tumbling down the staircase. A short time later Alicia walks down the same stairway. Based on the past history of Alicia and Thorn, she becomes the prime suspect.

Mel feels that Alicia is innocent and sets off to find the killer. There are three boaters on the island protesting the privatization of the island. Also, a new member of her crew, Waquisha, appears to be hiding something and Mel needs to find out if she might have known Thorn at some time.

When Mel goes to the historical society to see if there is any record of a female falling/jumping from the walkway, she finds that the material dealing with the lighthouse has gone missing. In addition, Mel and others have been finding what are thought to be “treasure maps”. They appear to be real but has someone gone to a lot of effort to slow up construction.

Mel is able to call on a cast of enjoyable and believable character, including her new love interest, Landon.

Paranormal mysteries aren’t really my thing, but Blackwell blends just enough into the story, to make it that much more enjoyable.

I will be watching for the next book in this exciting series.

This was the first book of this series that I read, and at first it was a little slow, mostly due to the fact that I'm not into home improvement. However, I liked the setting, a lighthouse island off San Francisco, and the story was very good. Although I had guessed one of the mysteries, the killer and motive took me by surprise. If I have to read another home improvement book for a challenge, I'll pick up one of these.

Mel Turner turns her hand to retrofit a lighthouse. The plans to open a B&B and restaurant on an island located in San Francisco Bay. Mel is startled when she sees a woman throw herself from the lighthouse. Trouble vegans when Alicia ex-wife abuse husband, Thorn shows up and tried to intimate Alicia. Her bodyguard removes Thorn from the island. Nearby boaters are upset because the construction area is now closed to the general public. Later the same day Mel find Thorn dead at the foot of the lighthouse tower. He is bloody and has a knife in his stomach. Alicia is on the stairs with bloody hands. The police considered Alicia a person of interest. Mel is looking for an answer to clear Alicia's name. The woman in white is protecting the Keeper's house not allowing entrance to the upper floors. Mel sees a young boy about 5 years old playing near the ocean. Thorn's ghost is also present. The ending is a surprise and I did not guess the killer until the reveal. I highly recommend this book and series.

I received a free copy from Berkeley Publishing Group through NetGalley for an honest review. I would like to thank them for this opportunity to read and review the book. The opinions expressed are my own.

When I first started this series I was enthralled, it was a wonderful cast of characters and a great story, unfortunately since the end of "Keeper of the Castle" I've been struggling with them. I have not enjoyed the way Mel pushed Graham aside for someone else after she proclaimed at the end of "Keeper of the Castle" that she needed to give their relationship more of a chance and then the next book she writes him off for this wanker of a Brit, Landon. I understand that in real life this happens but that's not why I read. I do so for the happiness of the characters at the end of the story and I don't feel that I'm getting that from the last two books in this series.

I also am having issues with how easily her family is moving over to liking this new guy. They were friends with Graham for years and now he's just pushed away in favor of someone new. The only mention of him was a postcard that Caleb put front and center on the fridge and then nothing. I know that once a relationship is over it's good to put it in the past but to end this book with a purchase of a house and a marriage proposal is a bit much since they've only been dating for a short time. I feel like it's being rushed and I'm not sure if I'll read any more books in this series. I'm having doubts of adding them to my shelves as they don't give me the elation they did when I first started reading them.

A lighthouse, murder, and ghosts, oh my! Another fabulous Haunted Home Renovation Mystery!

When I started reading cozy mysteries, I didn’t know there were para-cozies dealing with ghosts, and witches. I love the traditional cozy so much I couldn’t even think about read one with a paranormal element. But then I did, and I loved it, and I have read more like, A GHOSTLY LIGHT. It seems as though I like a cozy with a ghost from time to time. And author Juliet Blackwell helps play a part in that.

A GHOSTLY LIGHT was a fascinating book that I couldn’t put down. From the vivid descriptions of the lighthouse, to the murder and investigation, meeting the ghosts, and the great reveal, as well as a surprise last couple of sentences, everything about this story worked from the way it flowed, to the suspense, and the mystery, Ms. Blackwell has written tale to beat.

Ahoy mateys! What do you get when you combine murder, a haunted lighthouse, buried treasure maps, and a copy of "Treasure Island"...the latest adventure in the Haunted Home Renovation Mystery. Mel Turner is looking forward to working on her friend, Alicia's, construction project to renovate the lighthouse and buildings in the island compound into a charming inn. But she did not anticipate interference from pesky ghosts, or the need to investigate a murder on the island because her friend may be charged with the crime. As always, there are clues and suspects galore before the final solution is revealed, keeping the reader guessing to the end. I love the relationships that Mel has with her friends and family, and with each book, we learn more about Mel's ghostly ability and her coping mechanisms. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Contractor Mel Turner loves restoring historic properties, so she's super excited when she gets the contract to remodel a historic lighthouse into a hotel. Until she sees the ghosts (and)... and finds a dead body (again). Now she has to prove her friend's innocence, and solve the mystery of the ghost (before the ghost kills someone).

This is another fun book in the Haunted Home Renovation Mystery series. The ghost mystery was actually very compelling, digging deep into maritime and literary history to solve the puzzle. The modern-day murder mystery was okay, but nothing special. Still, this is a cozy mystery series that is definitely worth a read.

I enjoyed the happy twists in this book and found myself sympathizing with a lot of characters. Blackwell has done a great job of keeping things fresh despite this being the 7th book in the series. My only quibble is that I wish we could have had more time with Landon to get to know him before we were presented with this life-changing situation between him and Mel. I like him a lot more than Graham (who I didn't think needed to be around for as long as he was), but I still don't feel like I know him well enough to feel much regarding the ending. But it's a small issue in the grand scheme of things.

I really enjoy this series and this one was no exception! Mel has been hired to restore a lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper's home on an island in San Francisco Bay. When the ex-husband of Mel's friend shows up they're braced for trouble...until he ends up dead at the foot of the stairs in the lighthouse. Was he pushed by the island's resident ghost or was the deed done by someone a bit more "corporeal"? RECOMMEND!

Review:

A Ghostly Light, the seventh book In the Haunted Home Renovation Mystery series, is the best book to date. A somewhat isolated lighthouse setting, buried treasure, a touch of romance, ghosts, and a murder all mesh to make a wonderful supernatural adventure.

When Mel’s friend Alicia hires Turner Construction to refurbish a lighthouse, the keeper’s dwelling, and the outbuildings, Mel thinks she is up for the challenge. Alicia, who has done her best to put her abusive past behind her, is shocked when her ex-husband Thorn tracks her down on the island. Thorn quickly meets an untimely end, and all signs point to Alicia’s guilt. Mel is certain her friend is innocent, but proving it might be more difficult than one would think. In addition to Thorn’s murder, there is an active ghost occupying the lighthouse and causing some difficulties for the construction crew.

The historical mystery surrounding the lighthouse ghost, former keeper Ida Vigilance, is heartbreaking in origin. The parts of the book focusing on her are my favorite. The turn of the century time period, an old copy of the book Treasure Island, the maps leading to buried treasure, and the photo found in the attic all add dimension to the tale, and I love it. The present day mystery is not as strong but still has plenty of twists and turns and is quite enjoyable, too. The perpetrator came as a bit of a surprise, and the mystery resolution left me a touch sad. However, the ending of this book is quite pleasing, and I look forward to seeing where it will lead.

Mel is a woman in a man’s world. As the owner of Turner Construction she has mostly male employees, and she is completely outnumbered at home with her dad, business manager, step-son, boyfriend, and down-on-his-luck friend all under the same roof. Even the dog is a boy. None of this seems to faze her, although she longs for some privacy, and she is a strong, relatable protagonist. I like that despite her confidence, she still has challenges, most recently a debilitating fear of heights that makes her lighthouse construction site a trial. She also struggles with feeling a bit inadequate around her boyfriend Landon and fearful of her changing relationship with her step-son Caleb. See…very relatable. She handles her ability to see ghosts with grace and empathy, and I come away from this series always feeling that ghosts are plausible.

Mel’s home life is raucous and full of life. Her family and friends are colorful, each unique, and on the surface one could question their ability to all get along. But they do. I particularly like Mel’s father. He comes across as a man full of wisdom and unconditional love with a heavy dose of humor thrown in.

San Francisco, the lighthouse island in particular, is a great backdrop for the story. There is just something about lighthouses that is fascinating; they are beautiful but forlorn yet hopeful. Since the action mostly takes place on the island, I do miss the typical house renovation setting which Blackwell writes so well. It is obvious that she is knowledgeable and cares about preserving these monuments of a bygone era.

A Ghostly Light is truly a delightful read. I recommend it to fans of the series, those who like a ghost or two in their mysteries, and readers looking for well developed characters and a San Francisco setting.

A Ghostly Light: Haunted Home Renovation
Author: Juliet Blackwell
Publisher: Berkley

Mel loves renovating old properties in the San Francisco area, so when her friend Alicia hires her company, Turner Construction to renovate a historic lighthouse in the Bay, she can’t wait to get started. Alicia wants to transform the island property into a paying Inn, saving the history of the lighthouse and its former residents. No one thought that murder would get in the way.

Alicia’s abusive ex-husband, Thorn shows up and is promptly killed, leaving Alicia as the only suspect. Of course, there are a few other problems with the renovation of the lighthouse beside the police investigation into Thorn’s death. First, the project is a colossal undertaking that will take time and lots of money. Second, Mel has recently become terrified of heights and is doing her best to hide the fact from her clients and crew which makes her job almost impossible and her life a nightmare. Last but most definitely not the least, some of the former residents are still living on the island and in the lighthouse, which wouldn’t be an issue if they were alive.

Mel has little choice if she wants to finish this project, she has to find out who killed Alicia’s ex, and help the ghost in the attic find peace. If she fails the project will be ruined, and her friend will end up in prison for a murder she didn’t commit.

--
Mel Turner is a memorable character filled with ambition and determination but has a softer side as well, one where she is fearful of failing in her relationship with boyfriend Landon and losing the love of her step-son Caleb. Her friends are colorful and loyal as well as entertaining all on their own, especially her ghost hunter mentor, Olivier.

The characters are highly relatable; the reader can easily see their family and friends within the pages of this book. Juliet Blackwell is a talented story teller who again shows that she can create interesting and well-rounded characters as well as exciting plot lines. The location of San Francisco Bay is wonderfully detailed in a way that makes it easy to see and feel the city and the lighthouse even if the reader has never been to the city. The small island where the lighthouse is located will come to life as the reader imagines the keepers and their families living and working on the lonely island in a time long past.

This book is a delightful fast read with several twists and turns that will keep the reader not only turning the page but surprised by the outcome. The reveal of the killer is very emotional and may even bring a tear to the eye of many readers. Happily, this book is recommended to anyone who enjoys a good mystery that is plot driven with characters that are charming and memorable.

I received an ARC of this book.

Mel Turner, construction renovator extraordinaire, is very down to earth and works nearly all the time. Her life is complicated and seeing ghosts adds to that, but she has developed a fear oh heights after the last book. Landon Demetrius is a visiting mathematician professor at a local university and Mel's new boyfriend. I have to say, personally he is more suited to Mel than Graham ever was. Mel's close friend Luz, a professor and other friend Stephen are along to help. Mel’s dad, Bill, their friend Stan, and her ex-stepson Caleb get a little page-time which are all enjoyable. Alicia is a troubled representative of the man renovating the lighthouse and buildings for a B&B. Ida Prescott Vigilance, the longtime ghost of the lighthouse is my pick for break-out character - you'll understand when you finish the book.

The island with a lighthouse and caretaker buildings is a great setting for a mystery, throw in the ghosts and it is sheer delight. The writing accentuates the loneliness on the island for the caretakers with only a tiny bit of gothic atmosphere.

Finding the killer of a brutal wife beater isn't on most people's priority list, but his gentle-natured battered ex-wife is the police's prime suspect and nobody wants her to take the blame. The plot presents a victim that nobody is mourning, thus dealing with his ghost isn't Mel's preference either. The sub plot of the ghost of a woman lighthouse keeper who is distraught reveals a touching tale that you follow her story as eagerly, if not more so, than the main plot.

Yes, I really like a suspenseful killer reveal. I have to admit, this wasn't the nail-biting climax, but it was so well done that I loved it all the same. The wrap up is heartwarming and left me with a big smile.

I will remember this book and the emotions it evoked for a good while. It has poignant moments sprinkled through the mystery and the characters are vibrant. Ms. Blackwell continues to grow as a author, perfecting her craft, and it shows.

Ratings: Near Perfect - Couldn't Put it down. Buy two copies, one for you and one for a friend.

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Mel is a strong smart woman who does not let much stop her. Except for heights, that she cannot handle. This is a new fear for her, and she does not know how to handle it. This is not a good thing for someone in construction. I thought this one just one of the ways that the author makes Mel more believable and human. All of her family (her dad, Caleb, Stan…)are very likable and I enjoy reading about all of their interactions and conversations. And of course I cannot forget to mention Thorn, the newly deceased ghost. To bad he does not know how he met his demise.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book, I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place. The mystery surrounding the lighthouse, and the history of this lighthouse, and lighthouses in general, made for some interesting reading.

The mystery was carried on well throughout the entire book. There were enough suspects to consider and enough clues to sift through and this was not an easy mystery to solve. Throw in some red herrings and you have a well plotted mystery on your hands.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy paranormal. With great characters, great descriptions and a top notch mystery to solve, this is a book you are sure to enjoy.

The Haunted Home Renovation series is always a great adventure to read. It is such a fascinating story that you won’t be able to put it down. This is the seventh installment and the writing just keeps getting better and better. From the vivid descriptions of the lighthouse, to the murder and investigation, meeting the ghosts and the surprise reveal at the end. Ms Blackwell’s writing is flawless in the way it flows, from the suspense to the mystery. I was enthralled reading all the true history which blended with solid fiction drew me completely in. This book included genealogy, lighthouse history, buried treasure maps and geographic details. In fact, all of these elements not only enrich the mystery but they enrich your mind. Mel’s psychic ability to see ghosts always adds unique characteristic that has set this series apart from others. The touch of paranormal enhances the story line and adds an air of humor. Tons of clues and suspects will keep you guessing until the final page. I love the relationships that Mel has with her friends and family, and with each book, we learn more about Mel's ghostly ability and her coping mechanisms. This book could be read alone but I highly recommend starting at the beginning. All of the characters have shown so much growth. I’m anxious to see how the new love interest for Mel plays out. Even if you aren’t a fan of the paranormal, give this series a try. It will quickly become a favorite!

Mel Turner, the main character, is all about keeping as much of the original of each historic house she renovates as possible, researching about its past and bring the place to its former glory.
I also like how she balances everything as well as she can. She has family, friends, a new relationship, running her renovation business and working with the ghosts that are around her. She's learning how to deal with each new event.
I get to visit San Francisco and the surrounding area through her eyes. I'd like to visit one day, but I will continue virtually visiting via Juliet's two series set in that remarkable city.
I've not read the books in order and it didn't diminish my enjoyment. I'd happily read or listen to this series again.
I like this series as it's as much about the renovation and the relationships and the research as much as it is about the spirits that inhabit the pages.
I can most definitely recommend this book, this series and this author.

When her friend Alicia hires Turner Construction to renovate a historic lighthouse in the San Francisco Bay, Mel Turner can’t wait to get her hands dirty. Alicia plans to transform the island property into a welcoming inn, and while Mel has never attempted a project so ambitious—or so tall—before, she’s definitely up for the challenge.

But trouble soon arises when Alicia’s abusive ex-husband shows up to threaten both her and Mel, and later turns up dead at the base of the lighthouse stairs. With no other suspects in sight, things start looking choppy for Alicia. Now, if Mel wants to clear her friend’s name, she’ll need the help of the lighthouse’s resident ghosts to shine a light on the real culprit...

I'm mixed on this one. I enjoyed a story based on the Brother's Lighthouse -- I'm not sure if the B&B is still up and running but there was something so romantic about it. I wondered if Blackwell actually wrote the book. There was just such a change in Mel and all of a sudden Graham is gone -- yes, he was given that offer to go to Paris, but it was like he was written out and left hanging. And Landon shows up and all of a sudden she's in love. And then the story started going off on dopplegangers and hinting at demons. The series just seemed to veer off like someone else wrote it and hadn't read the earlier books.

I particularly liked the mystery surrounding the lighthouse ghost and the lighthouse island setting. This portion of the book was well thought out and executed. The present day murder/ghost was not nearly as complex but also enjoyable. At this point in the series, the characters are well developed and feel like old friends. I particularly like Mel's dad and Dog.

I received a copy of this title from the publisher and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.

Mel Turner and her friends are back in book 7 of the Haunted Home Renovation Mysteries. Mel and Turner Construction are going to restore a lighthouse, but when a man is killed, and Mel's friend Alicia is blamed she uses her ghost hunting detective skills to get to the bottom of the mystery.

I love this series and love how Mel is still growing as a character. In this novel she had to overcome her newfound fear of heights to help solve the crime and a decades old mystery of the former lighthouse keepers. For me this novel was win win. I love lighthouses and ghost stories--the fact that this book had both is perfect.
