Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of becoming King of the Pirates. He’ll never be able to swim again—a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog! Years later, Luffy sets off on his quest to find the “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…

Stopping by the Sabaody Archipelago to get an expert varnish on their ship, the Thousand Sunny, Luffy and his Straw Hat crew run into trouble when they bristle at the local slave trade. Soon the Navy is hot on their trail, and due to the astounding powers of an animalian warlord, Luffy is spirited away to a distant corner of the sea! Will he ever make it back to his crew and achieve his dream of finding the “One Piece”?

Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

BonClay
“Luffy: Bon-chan! I thought you died that time!...
Bon Clay: Haha…We queers never die! (aside: Wait, is that really true?)”

(Lines based on anime original voice acting, because the standard translations, in the manga especially, don’t capture the full vibe Oda seems to be going for.)

First, though, a brief summary of events:

We follow up on Luffy’s decision to punch a Celestial Dragon – one of the noble class specially protected by the navy and world government. This leads to a scuffle that breaks up a slave auction and introduces our crew to “Dark King” Silvers Rayleigh, the first mate of the first “King of the Pirates”, Gol D. Roger. Their chat reveals many things, including
Rayleigh also asks Luffy: “Do you think you can conquer such powerful oceans?” To which Luffy replies: “I’m not going to conquer anything! The one who is the most free is the pirate king!”

However, the government crackdown on Sabaody Archipelago turns out to be more than our crew (and the other powerful rookie pirates who are also there) can handle. Those of us who enjoy “Zoro and Sanji actually care about each other” moments get quite a few here, as it is clear that Zoro is not at 100% after his encounter with Kuma, and Sanji is therefore trying to keep an eye on him.
“Sanji: Nami! I’ll protect you! Even if it kills me!…
Franky: If you’re prepared to risk your life, be the decoy for all of us.
Sanji: Ladies only, idiot!...
(Pacifista targets Zoro and Usopp)
Also Sanji: Franky! Take care of Nami!! Go on without me!!”

However, neither Sanji nor Luffy can save the wounded Zoro from our captain ends up getting yeeted to the island of Amazon Lily, inhabited by the Kuja (“nine snakes”) warrior women.

I have to say, I was impressed at the variety of positively-portrayed female body types represented among the Amazons ( “Here, strength is beauty”)…and a little more annoyed, in that context, that the MAJOR female characters – Nami, Vivi, Robin, etc. - in ‘One Piece’ tend to look like the same person in different wigs! Their personalities are very different, of course, and they are well-written characters…but this ‘same face syndrome’ was clearly entirely avoidable!

Amazon Lily is ruled by pirate empress Boa Hancock, the eldest of the “gorgon sisters”. Boa Marigold and Sandersonia have snake powers, while Hancock can shoot her “love-love” beam and turn anyone who is attracted to her to stone – which, since she is incredibly beautiful, is basically every allosexual person in the ‘One Piece’ world! Now, for anyone who knows their Greek mythology (or at least Ovid’s version of it), this obvious medusa-theming might be raising tragic-backstory red flags!
There’s a great video essay called “The Beauty of Boa” that talks about how interesting her character writing is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1HTi...

Hancock ends up falling for Luffy, partly because he has a strong sense of justice but, even more so, because he treats her like just a person. Some fans think Hancock and Luffy must be end-game, citing things like her name, which probably derives from Thomas Hancock, an inventor who more or less founded the British rubber industry. But I hope Oda sticks to the aroace version of Luffy he seems to be establishing (see below), not just because it would be a rare and wonderful bit of representation, but also because I think Oda is too good a writer to gift his protagonist the most beautiful woman in the world without building up to it more. Also, it would be sad if Hancock’s bar stayed so low that she takes some guy not objectifying her, finally remembering her name isn’t “Hammock”, and giving her a “thanks, bro!” handshake as a declaration of true love!

Which is something that happens after the smitten Hancock helps Luffy sneak into the prison of Impel Down to try and rescue his brother Ace before he gets executed! Impel Down is basically a cross between Alcatraz, Arkham Asylum, and Dante’s Inferno/Buddhist hell: an island/partly underground fortress housing all of the World Government’s most dangerous prisoners, with devilish-looking guards and multiple themed levels. For an analysis of Impel Down’s literary/religious inspirations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPBEJ...
Here, Luffy reunites with quite a lot of characters we’ve met before, as well as several important new ones. Side note: I wanna know what prison hair-care routine Buggy develop that has his blue ponytail rivaling the lush glossiness of Princess Vivi’s!
Buggy
Meanwhile, we get a glimpse of the various places to which the other Straw Hats have been sent: Which finally brings us to:

Vol53

Queerness in ‘One Piece’, Part 2 (if my long discussion of Bon Clay is #1)
This set of volumes very much illustrates the complexity of talking about queer rep in One Piece. On the one hand, we have Amazon Lily, which gives us both strong confirmation of attraction between women being a thing in this world AND the best evidence yet for asexual and/or aromantic Luffy. On the other hand, there’s Peachy Island, which….OOF. The way that one plays out is not as bad as it initially seems if you take into account the full context of the story, especially Sanji’s even-more-binary-than-usual concept of gender and the fact that everyone on the crew got sent where they did for a purpose (not just a gag). However, I do wish Oda had drawn/written that bit differently, because it does initially seem really bad and I would not blame anyone who’d been protecting themselves from spoilers hitting this and going: “What is this transphobic garbage? I’m out!” - especially if watching the anime, which draws it out for 10 minutes vs. one page. And then on the gripping hand (see The Mote in God's Eye)…there’s Luffy’s joyful reunion with our first gender-queer character, Bon Clay, which will lead into some REALLY interesting stuff later. I will attempt not to write a whole thesis on this, but see the following spoiler section if you want more of my thoughts on each:
For more information: “One Piece: A Queer retrospective” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENc-B... ), “Not gay or trans, but okama” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8QS4... ), and “Luffy: the asexual hero we deserve”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS211...

As a final (I promise!) note: This set of volumes shows us more of Kuma (who is super important in the chapters that are still being written right now) - as well as introducing several other characters who will be very important for the future. These include Luffy’s fellow rookie pirate captains Trafalgar Law and Jewelry Bonny, both of whom have very interesting devil fruit powers, and the characters some have called “Martin Luther Fishman”: highly principled warlord of the sea, Jimbei.

Ace is a well loved character and yet all that we see is little scenes of him suffering :')

And also I need the other characters to come back and please let us have more depth storylines about them too, not only Luffy like…😭

This books to hold my interest after hundreds of chapters and thousands of pages!
A massive feat.

Not every character is my exact cup of tea (USOPP for the win!!), but I'm always intrigued to see how they grow and change as their story continues to deepen.

I've halted my viewing of the anime for the moment, in order to build up some more momentum and get a lead with the manga.

On to the next volume!

One of the best arcs so far! Love the build-up of the stakes for the crew and equally terrified and excited to see what will happen next in the story.

So these volumes were a few of the worst in a while now. And that's not to say they were bad because they weren't. But they were kind of mediocre. I am currently torn between 3 star and 4 star rating because the ending of Sabaody archipelago arc was good, the Amazon Lily arc was actually pretty bad and now the Impel Down one is good again.

The fact that we're mostly following Luffy is not okay with me because I would like to see more of the crew but I do like the characters that appear in Impel Down.

Overall, I will still give these volumes 4 stars because some really good things did happen but you have to know that the Amazon Lily part is considerably worse than everything else and I could honestly give that part 2 stars.

There will be SPOILERS ahead!

I will start with Sabaody archipelago since, you know, this is the arc that finishes in these three volumes. And, well, I liked it. There is this great moment where Luffy apologizes for punching that aristocrat and Zoro is like yeah no worries, I wanted to punch him too. The scene with Luffy, Law and Kidd that follows is also great and I love the banter between them. I have a feeling that this is not their last scene together. Law and Kidd's powers are really cool although I don't exactly understand them yet. I also like how Sanji is worried about Zoro and takes care of him because he's injured. And then they all disappear... yup, this is the moment since which the things got a bit worse. You know, cause Amazon Lily starts because of it and I now have to talk about it.

So yeah, Amazon Lily... ugh, I kinda hated this arc. Fortunately, it is just 11 chapters long but these chapters are pretty bad. For some reason we constantly talk about Luffy's penis and his balls which... no, please no. Sexualizing Nami is already too much... I don't need to hear about Luffy's penis. Boa Hancock was fine and I like that she manipulates everyone with her beauty. But I kinda hate her being in love with Luffy because I know it's never gonna happen and it's just cringe in my opinion. I think we also see what the other members of the crew are doing and I love Franky dancing on some winter island, Sanji running away from some girls and Zoro hanging out with Ghost girl.

Anyway, I don't want to spread negativity so let's talk about Impel down. We got a lot of Ace. And I mean a lot of Ace. And despite the fact that he's in prison, I loved all of them (aka he looks really hot, come at me if you dare). I love that he doesn't want Luffy to be caught as well and it's cool to see him hanging out with Jimbei. And then Luffy runs into who else than Buggy the clown, one of the most iconic One Piece characters. And then we get back Mr. 3 and they both want to betray Luffy but they can't succeed because they are too stupid. And now we have Bon Clay who actually helps Luffy... I love that they all came back. And I think that Crocodile is in the cell beside Ace and Jimbei so that should be fun. Can't wait for them to get him out.

I like the unexpected direction that the Sabaody arc is taking! I was hoping that Ace would factor into the story somehow, but I wasn't counting on Luffy going on a solo mission to rescue him. I'm intrigued by the Straw Hat crew being flung far and wide by Bartholomew Kuma, and I'm curious as to what structure the manga will take as it follows their individual adventures and eventual reunion.

I'm having a lot of fun with the character Boa Hancock. She has plenty of of unsavory personality traits, such as abusing animals and banking on her looks to avoid taking responsibility for her cruelty--not to mention the suspicions I feel when Oda introduces yet another hypersexualized female character. But she's also hilarious and a delight to see in action. I love how she literally throws back her head when she's looking down on people, and it's entertaining how she has fallen for such an unattainable protagonist. Luffy's brother may be the one called Ace, but Luffy seems pretty ace himself, as well as aromantic.

I also like how old characters are becoming relevant again in the prison of Impel Down, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this story arc continues! I've always been impressed (and a little terrified) of people who can name so many "One Piece" characters. But now I understand that Oda's writing style facilitates such memorization. He does a great job of making old characters relevant again in fun and exciting ways.

It's nice to have these shorter arcs. It increases my reading stamina. This three-volumer, for example, has Sabaody, Amazon Lily, and Impel Down action - what more could you ask for? I love all three.

Onto spoilers:

It was genius of Oda to split up the crew at this point in the story - the precise part where one starts to feel that the crew interactions are getting a tad stale over 50 volumes in. Why does it work? Because Luffy is the type of person to pick up allies and enemies left, right, and centre wherever he goes. Therefore, when Oda rips Luffy from his crew and takes us to islands we've never heard of before, populated with a host of new and interesting character, we get so much freshness from the story (while the Ace stuff keeps a full-on sense of urgency in the background, even after learning that the rest of the crew are actually safe). When we meet them again, we will be so glad to see them again that what was becoming stale before will now resonate welcomingly as cozy nostalgia. And who knows? Maybe they will have all changed a little too for extra newness...

Series: One Piece #52-54
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

This one was a bit chaotic and all over the place. The Straw Hats and other members of the Worst Generation are causing chaos in Sabody. I enjoyed seeing Kid and Law show off their abilities. This also is the return of Warlord Kuma who basically decimates the Straw Hats by making them disappear from Sabody. Luffy finds himself on Amazon Lily where he meets Warlord Boa Hancock. Luffy finally learns what is happening with Ace and is determined to rescue him. Volume 54 is the start of the impel Down arc with Luffy trying to rescue Ace. While Luffy has just arrived, he is already causing Chaos and destruction. It will be interesting to see how much damage he does and who all he befriends along the way, because I don’t remember at this point.

Every adventure just keeps getting better! The story continues to build excitement with nonstop action that makes it impossible to put down. I love how old characters and villains are brought back into the story, and how Oda proves himself to be an exceptional writer by skillfully weaving the threads together. I especially enjoyed all the clues and subtle hints from past volumes that are so easy to miss if you’re not paying close attention, and now many of those loose ends are starting to come together.. it’s mind blowing to see little details from the very beginning finally taking shape.

There's so much happening on this volume. It feels the whole world built by Oda is finally coming together.

This volume has three main arcs: Escape from Sabaody, Amazon Lily and the Impel Down invasion. We gets lots of character moments, returning characters from past arcs, world development... and the hint that something huge is brewing.

This is not only exciting in a "shonen manga" action way, but also in a narrative way. Great volume.

Absolutely flew through Sabaody! Definitely one of my favourites so far! But also one of the most heart-wrenching sagas; to see the crew go through the absolute wringer, and to see was such a powerful moment.

Also Brook, congrats, you're in my good books now.

In my opinion, One Piece as a manga is hugely popular compared to the anime since as a reader, one never has a moment to catch their breath. The story moves fast and with this omnibus volume, everything has heated up in the OP universe. A war is coming and this edition is a buildup to that.
