Captain Ginyu has exchanged bodies with Goku, and Gohan and Kuririn must use the seven Dragon Balls of Namek to summon the mighty Dragon Lord, who can grant any three wishes. But if they do summon the Dragon Lord, can they prevent Vegeta and Freeza from wishing for immortality for themselves?
Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

Freezer revela sucessivamente as suas poderosas transformações, demonstrando um poder avassalador que parece ser demasiado até para o agora recuperado Son Goku.
Freeza shows his true power! What a destructive, intense amazing fight! And it’s not over either! Dragon Ball just keep leveling up with each new sequence and I honestly love it.
I highly doubt Toriyama was sowing the seeds for the God forms fourteen years in advance (these chapters original ran in 1991, Goku got God ki in 2013, but Freeza reached God level in 2015), but it's fun to think he did. Like Oolong calling Son Goku an alien when he first goes Great Ape. I don't have the original Japanese script near me, so I don't know if Piccolo is actually really calling Son Goku and Freeza godlike, but still. Toriyama forgot a lot of shit over time (like Lunch), and it's arguably our job as fans to pretend he's infallible by contorting our respective headcanons to support his genius. Or something.
It's weird as fuck to slowly re-read Toriyama's original Dragon Ball while reading Toyotarou's Dragon Ball Super manga as VIZ publishes the collected volumes. The chapters here continue to wank about the mystery of the Super Saiyan legend, when I obviously have the foresight not just of Son Goku's eventual transformation (to occur next volume), but also of Trunks's arrival, Vegeta's transformation through immense butthurt and wounded pride, Goku beating his son until he learns Super Saiyan, all the clamoring to improve the basic SS form before the Cell Game, Goku shitting out SS3 because of his ghost stamina, Gotenks shitting out SS3 because Fusions are wacky, Goku getting God ki, Goku and Vegeta getting Blue mode, Freeza asspulling a Blue-tier form, Hit, Jiren, Broly, and Moro all being Blue-tier (or stronger) because power-creep is ridiculous. God damn! I can't fault an outsider for thinking Dragon Ball is asinine. I used to think so myself, for a few years, having betrayed my childhood love, but I love the franchise again, warts and all.
Son Gohan continues to build mystery with a burst of rage that allows him to smack Form 2 Freeza around a little bit, as well as a later Zenkai boost from Dende allowing Gohan to do a wee bit more damage. Vegeta briefly believes Gohan may be on his way to realizing the SS legend, but of course he doesn't, as we know Goku will do it. However, Gohan will be the first to unlock SS2, which he does partly in defense of Vegeta later on, so it's cool to see that seed being planted here. We also get Vegeta's desperation for a power boost, requesting Krillin hit him with a fatal shot, which almost backfires when Dende refuses to heal Vegeta (Dende's heart was in the right place, but honestly he kinda deserves that kick Vegeta gives him upon recovery - Bejita showed an attempt to set aside differences and ally with Gohan/Krillin/Piccolo, and he was the only shot against Freeza at the moment, though of course Goku will show up shortly).
I think this is the first time we really start to see Goku flex his Saiyan ancestry with his lust for battle. He toyed around with the Saiyans and the Ginyu Tokusentai earlier, but that confidence came almost completely from an assumption that he's far above his enemies' level. When he begins the fight against Freeza, but men are just fucking around with each other, despite all the evil Freeza's committed, including having taken out the Z-fighters' white-mage mere moments ago. The tables are turned, with Freeza being the one who deservedly gets to gloat and flaunt his power. He knows for a fact he's stronger than Goku, and so can get away with e.g. fighting without using his hands. Goku is maintaining Kaio-ken x10 for quite a while, which is no match for Freeza's 50% max power. The volume ends with Goku deciding to get serious and pushing himself to KKx20, but we know this is ineffective, as Goku still has to do the Genki-dama and ultimately go Super Saiyan before Freeza can be defeated.
One of the most fun elements of reading Dragon Ball, but also arguably the most infuriating, is seeing all the characters improvise new techniques on the fly, only to never use them again. Goku has always mimicked his buddies' techniques (Roshi's Kamehameha, Tenshinhan's Taioken, and technically Krillin learned to fly before Goku copied it), but I totally forgot Goku was able to do a simple version of Yamcha's Spirit Ball move when he sets up two Kamehameha balls underwater to control them to launch at Freeza with a flick of the wrist. And Freeza has fucking eye-beams, and he can generate a ball of ki around his foe (Goku, in this case) and shoot it toward the planet's surface. I watched the anime on Toonami throughout much of my childhood, but most of what I know of DBZ comes more from the many video games, where all anyone does is spam Kamehameha, or Death Beams in Freeza's case. This is part of the charm for the Super manga, that Toyotarou likes to bring back seldom used moves (I believe Vegeta only uses Final Flash once against Cell, but it's basically his signature move in Toyo's manga).
It's also humorous to see JOBgeta cry bitch-tears at being too weak to fight Freeza, since being a little fuckboy is what allows him to go SS later on, being so jealous of Kakarot.
I love the color spread. It really is the only thing I'm reviewing for these books. Because it's DBZ and I've seen this story dozens of times. I know it inside out and I'm sure most ppl do too.
