Excessive was a book about a boy and girl falling love, but not the traditional kind of romance. The boy, Harry, just happened to be the leader of one of the ruling gangs. The girl, Arabella, was the sister of the leaders of Harry's rival gang. In the very first chapter it starts off with Arabelle in a nightmare “Another strike hit, this time closer. I yelped and ran to the right, away from the last attack”(Rose 1). This made the book not only a romantic fiction but also an action/ mystery. With Harry and Arabelle becoming each other love poison, and Harry has more than one secret to hide from her. Harry’s main work is killing the bad guys just for the heck of it, with a little bit of business added into that. Harry character development dug really raw into his past, explaining where all his rage and emotions came from. It shows the internal battle he goes through while trying not to let himself fall in love. The theme of the story, or really the lesson was falling in love can be dangerous, especially when your young and looking for adventure. Arabelle has been locked up in her house for the first 17 years of her life and when Harry gives her the adventure she was looking for she can’t help but fall for him. The first encounter with Harry and Arabelle “ “Arabella Casper” he said, a smirk visible in his voice. There was a pause and I almost looked up at him. Almost. “Hello Arabella. My name is Harlan”.............”But you may call me Harry”....”(Rose 6) Harry was nothing close to perfect, he was actually quite the opposite, he was the devil compared to sweet Arabella. I can relate to the struggle with setting his monsters free and letting his guard down. Another good thing was how unpredictable this book was, around every corner was a new drama filled event. From gang fights, to family drama, all the way to raging love scenes. Although the book was written with all this intensity , there is a bad thing. The book isn't professionally published meaning there were some grammatical and punctuation errors. As for being able to understand what was going on the whole time, the author uses great imagery and metaphors. You really get to see the characters interacting with what they are thinking verse what they are saying. It goes really deep into Arabella's fear of Harry that activates her love for him. Lastly, the readers I would recommend this book to older teenagers to early thirty-year-old women. It can really awaken those love hormones and give you the fantasy of the bad boy you've always wanted
