Catie Rhodes is the author of the Peri Jean Mace Ghost Thrillers.
She was born and raised behind the pine curtain in East Texas. Her favorite memories of childhood are sitting around listening to her family tell lies.
Some of the tales were spooky. Some had grim endings. Some were sidesplittingly funny. The stories all had one thing in common: each had an element of the mysterious or the unexplained.
Those weird stories molded Catie into a purveyor of her own brand of lies and legends. One day, she found the courage to start writing down her stories. It changed her life forever.
Catie Rhodes lives steps from the Sam Houston National Forest with her long-suffering husband and her armpit terrorist of a little dog.
This series is so good. I love the way that the story is evolving, constantly adding new powers and moving locations to keep things fresh. This time around, Peri Jean is asked to assist an acquaintance of Mysti (her mentor who has helped her control her powers and assisted her when she was in trouble), and her close friend who is also a very special investigator. During the course of the story, all 3 are drawn into a case spanning several years with some very unfortunate victims, and an extremely twisted individual who has some special talents that put everybody in danger. There is a much darker feel to this story, which I particularly enjoyed as it set a great atmosphere for Peri Jean to push herself in. There aren't really any quips to lighten the mood, and the protagonist is very well portrayed. It was also a nice touch to have certain boundaries blurred so that events didn't just happen as anticipated. I pretty much read this through from start to finish and would recommend this series for fans of horror, supernatural mystery and anybody who loves a fast paced read that will consume you.
In this newest installment in the life and times of Peri Jean Mace, she is finally turning to the realization that perhaps it's possible to work with her gift (or curse, as she sees it) instead of fighting it. It's a scary proposition, meeting the challenge of working as an investigator while using her sight to search for the truth about a long missing girl in a creepy town that's not a blip on anyone's map.
The characters come through in vivd detail through both Peri Jean's redneck ruminations and the author's spot on imagery. I found the hair standing up on the back of my neck at many points, and was caught by the storyline and by my investment in seeing a vulnerable Peri Jean struggling to overcome her demons and succeed. The progression of the story is very much tied into Peri's personal journey. The pull of that alone is irresistible, but the details will keep you hungry for more.
If you haven't read any of the other Peri Jean Mace books, this one will be a satisfying ride to the dark side. Dig in and enjoy. Or start from the beginning with 'Forever Road' and just keep going until you arrive at 'Rest Stop.'
I received a copy of Rest Stop in exchange for an honest review. As stated prior to this, I would never recommend a book that I didn't thoroughly enjoy.
So good and scary! The Peri Jean books all have a bit of creepy-scary- oh no moments in them, but this one this one was the most intense. There was less humor to balance out the scary- and it works it's a darker book and that's where Peri Jean is right now- but I did not read Rest Stop with the lights off. A great book, and I am SO looking forward to the next one!
“Rest Stop”, fourth in the 'Peri Jean Mace' series, is about half the length of the previous novel (Rocks & Gravel) and it shows. It is noticeably more focussed as it is set away from family and friends in Gaslight City. Peri, along with her mentor, Mysti, and Mysti's on-off boyfriend, Griff, both of whom have magical abilities, travel to Nazareth, Texas, to look for a woman who has been missing for decades. It soon turns out that she was one of many - none of whom have ever been traced. A snowglobe (reminiscent of the black opal necklace which attached itself to Peri) appears from nowhere and is definitely a clue (and possibly more). An abandoned rest stop outside the small town seems to be involved. What starts out as an investigative procedural turns into a magical extravaganza in which time and place become twisted. With Peri still less than confident in her magical ability will she be able to overcome the dark force which has plagued the area for nearly four decades? 3 Stars.
I can deal with a lot of things that don't make sense if the story is good, but I need the background behind why things are the way they are. For example, what happened to Camden? Was his appearance as a result of the accident?
In the story, Peri Jean and her friend Mysti and new boss, Griffin, head to Nazareth to solve an old mystery. However, there is more to the case that Peri Jean doesn't learn about until she arrives. In addition to Susie's disappearance, quite a few others have also gone missing around the town. Is it the town? Like all small towns, getting the community to share with outsiders will be nearly impossible. When Peri Jean unwittingly grabs the attention of a killer, how does one fight someone they can't touch?
Peri Jean hits the road with her new witch mentor, Mysti, and Mysti's boss, Griffin Reed, to see if she'd be a good fit as a consulting medium for Reed's detective agency. The case takes them to a little town in the middle of nowhere with an unnatural number of unexplained disappearances. This book ratcheted up the horror factor in a big way. With Peri Jean still unsure whether or not she's comfortable embracing her supernatural abilities, and with little to no idea how to use those abilities it's truly touch and go for her and her new friends.
This was one of the creepier of this series so far. I had accidentally read a newer released book in the series then backtracked to where I left off. Won't review the newer book till I catch up.
As the series moves along, relationships change and so does our Peri Jean. She's learning new things and has a new job and is challenged more in this book than any of the others so far. She's finally getting comfortable using her gift and helps it grow.
My impression was this had an American Horror Story like creepy value.
I say it with every book I finish.... I freaking love this series! A big difference with this book is that I didn't figure out who the big bad was until much farther into the book. A big plus! Peri Jean keeps getting more interesting with each new adventure she goes on. More of her powers become unveiled and they are incredibly cool! This is yet another Peri Jean Mace winner! On to the next!
The action begins with a road trip and an audition for semi-steady employment. Still not tight continuity but the action and development are good. The problem with this series is, IMO, and lack of flow from book to book. More as though the stories are considered stand alone then as a set of steps that connect. I see such potential that is handled with awkward moments.
Just finished reading "Rest Stop" by Catie Rhodes. It was great (as all of Catie's, Peri Jean series is) I think this was the scariest of all the books in the series so far. Rest stop, is about a Old abandoned Rest stop on the Highway that is said to be haunted. But this is not a normal haunting , The rest stop pulls people in and traps them in their dreams. It was very well written and a great scary story. I could not put the book down. I read it all in one setting.
I am completely hooked on this series!! Although disappointed that only a couple of the usual characters showed up, and left a lot of questions unanswered, it was still an intense mysterious thriller that i really enjoyed. I sure hope Peri Jean stops the smoking...
Another great creepy paranormal mystery from Catie Rhodes! It's been a while since I read book 3 and I don't recall everything that happened. I would have liked a bit more explanation of what happened with Peri Jean in the past. However, that didn't keep me from sitting at the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. I can't wait to see what trouble Peri Jean finds herself in next!
Excellent writing, characters are well-written and ( some) I'd like to meet. The plots are imaginative and original, and I'm off to buy the next in this series!
I love Peri Jean. Her snark, her fears and how she deals (or doesn't deal) with them, and her psychic abilities make her an unforgettable character. This book marks a major change in her life and I like the new direction and secondary characters. I already bought the next one in the series!
WOW puts it mildly! The mystery, the paranormal and the gore made this a 5 star for me!! It was written well with only 1 minor typo too! The characters are great and I am going to continue with the series! This can be a read alone but it's more meaningful to start at the beginning of the series.
Her character became a backdrop to the others. She seemed to have lost her backbone and spunk. Disappointed but will try the next one. Read the next and was pleased it's better than this one. More like the first lot, not quite as good but still great. At the end I thought all loose ends were mostly tied, which was sad, but it's ok cause..... I just love that some things go unexplained - food for later.
I love these books I read all seven in a row you will Lucy sleep when you start them. Katie Rhoades writes like you will hear Texans talk. Just not enough Y'all's. LOL
If you havent realized it already I am a fan of Caties work with the Peri Jean series of stories. I pre-order copies of the book and just like when you favorite show/episodes finally download on netflix i am thrilled to look in my kindle app and find her book. I wish she would add 200 more pages to these novellas because I tend to read habitually and Im done before Im ready to move on but Catie is obviously very dedicated to her fans and in the continued success of her character's. We know when we close the pages she is already collaborating on another way to entertain us. ((Nirvana - to be in absolute happiness)). In rest stop Peri our main character ( our hero ) through a series of personal losses finally decides to stop fighting against her gift and teams up with a kindred soul and her partner to help bring solace to a mother who seeks closure of her missing child. A battle of will, love, belief and of course the super natural - Peri unravels the chains that held the truth like a veil over the eyes of a small town and uncovers more than even Peri may be prepared for.....
My father loved the show murder she wrote, every week him and i would faithfully sit down in the livingroom and watch Jessica Fletcher solve the mysteries of cabot cove. Peri Jean Mace is the mystical verison of Angela Lansbury :) Witty, sarcastic, caring and has a unique ability inherited through her family line which has labeled her as trouble child in the past however now defines her as a strong powerful young woman on a path designed to help her hone her skills, assist the living ((& the dead)) and maybe.... just maybe find the Mace treasure that has haunted her family for almost a century.
Whoa! This one was a scary one....I enjoy reading Catie Rhodes' Peri Jean Mace series, and this one was a good one. The setting in a small town with an old rest stop as a spooky portal could be right around the corner from me. I'm definitely staying away from abandoned buildings. It's a suspenseful story with Peri Jean getting a new job hiring on as medium to help find missing people. This story is about a young high school girl who disappears. Peri Jean and her friends Mysti and Griff have to investigate in this rural area, and there are strange encounters around the town. I recommend this book, and definitely recommend you read the whole series, because you find out more and more about Peri Jean and her life and family as you go. Thanks to the author for providing the complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
This seemed so short compared to the other books in this series, but it was still very good with yet another astounding mystery! Peri Jean was as witty as ever, though it did piss me off the way Griff and Mysti treated her at times, like she was some type of recalcitrant child, when her attitude and behavior are a part of who she is. Peri Jean is awesome at her gift, which she calls a curse, plus she single handily solved the case!
I'm glad her and Dean never got back together because he was such an asshole to her but I'm curious about her new roommate, the biker and healer, his name eludes me right now, he wasn't mentioned at all...I thought something would pop off between him and Peri Jean being that they have so much in common...guess we'll see what happens in book five!
Peri Jean has started her first job as a physic investigator, and things get very hairy.
I love this series. The characters are great and believable, (even the strange ones!), and the plots are original and interesting. Peri Jean has a likeable honesty about her. I can't really say much more without spoiling the plot.
This book is as good as all the others, and I can't wait for the next.
I got the first book in this series for free. Although I enjoyed the story I found it a little weak, but as things go, I decided to try the second one and feel as the books have progressed, so have the stories and adventures. This book was filled with action from the start to finish, I love how Peri-Jean is finally accepting herself and what she can do!
#4 Peri Jean Mace ghost thriller. Wow! Kept me reading; couldn't stand not knowing what was going to happen. I love this series by Catie Rhodes. If you don't mind a few ghosts, a little foul language, and lots of action, you'll definitely enjoy this series!
"Rest Stop".is one of those books that is both an incredible read as well as a disappointment. What do I mean by that? The author left us hanging from the previous book and never really have us closure with a funeral for Peri Jean's Memaw or a scene between Peri and Dean; yet, the overall plot was fabulous and creepy as heck. This read is only 150 pages and at a minimum should have been 200 so that Ms. Rhodes could have handled these issues. Oh well!
Peri has been working on honing her medium talents by working with Mysti. With all of her side jobs drying up and barely paying basic bills Peri takes a job with Mysti and her beau, Griff. They go to a small town whose shame us over 30 people who have gone missing. They are there to investigate the disappearance of a teen who had gone missing over 35 years ago. Her mother wants closure and wants to bury her daughter's remains properly.
As Peri Jean, Mysti and Griff investigate strange things are revealed that scares the beejeebees out of the all and if they are not careful they might not make it out alive. When I was afraid as a child my parents use to say, "It's not the dead you should fear. It's the living," so ghost stories never bothered me. However, "Rest Stop" freaked me out and left me shaking because it was that creepy. I only wish Ms. Rhodes had dealt with the elephant in the room, i.e. Dean and Meemaw.
I am still reading this series but come on give thus girl more backbone and some happiness in between the large problems she is stuck into. Series is good but getting tiring with problem after problem! Even in real life we catch a few breaks even if world shove a Shit Storm at us. Hay Author Please Read!
