A short novel by Daeninckx, who often writes about those whom history has forgotten. Galadio is the son of a tirailleur sénégalais, (black French soldier) sent in 1921 to occupy the industrial Rhine-Ruhr territory in order to enforce payment of war reparations, and a German mother.
He lives an ordinary life until Hitler’s rise to power; he is a good pupil at school, plays football, swims competitively, and his best friend is Deborah Baschinger, daughter of a neighbour.
Gradually he is excluded- banned from the football team, then the swimming pool. His main persecutor is his former football coach, Dieter, now a member of the SA, who warns him that people like him are next on the list.
The scene of the roundup of any domestic animal belonging to a Jewish family is shocking, even though we know it’s only the prologue...
Galadio (usually called Ulrich, except by Deborah) eventually finds himself recruited to be an extra in the vast cinema studios of Babelsberg, which still exist, but at that time turning out such nasties as “Jud Süss”, and Leni Riefenstahl’s artistically beautiful but morally poisonous “Triumph des Willens”.
At a time when Germany seeks to glorify its own colonial history and aspersions- particularly in contrast with the UK, black folk who adoretgey Germany are needed to perpetuate this myth. (Not so different from “Gone with the Wind” truth be told!)
Galadio’s subsequent adventures illuminate forgotten aspects of that dreadful war which continues to cast its shadow over Europe
Without underestimating the hideous suffering and devastating massacre of Jews, it is important to remember that they were not Hitler’s only targets - next time it could be you “they” come for first.
