Raging at the Stars

Rate this book
Conspiracies. Emory Hawkes is an ardent believer. She’s an investigative journalist dedicated to seeking out the truths behind cover-ups and exposing the lies that keep the general population in the dark. Her priority? To expose the secrets at Area 51.

While watching the skies over that top secret base, she observes what appears to be saucer-shaped objects descending. Whether of military design or otherworldly origin, Emory can only watch as they launch a devastating attack.

Emory’s theories go against everything Captain Sofia Martinez stands for, and all she has dedicated her life to, working at Area 51. Sofia knows Emory lives to challenge her authority, but can they put aside their differences to fight together to save mankind? Can they save the world from not just the invaders above but also from the all too human element who have their own secret agendas to set in motion?

3 1/2 Stars. This is a fun, sci-fi/action book. I've had my eye on Davis' books for a while now, but this is the first I've read. I enjoyed this read. It was like watching a big blockbuster movie, fun and entertaining.

The story is about Emory, a huge conspiracy theorist. She thinks she hit the jackpot, while staking out Area 51. The UFO's suddenly above her only prove the government has been lying about their tech capabilities. When the ships, hovering above, explode the base, Emory can't believe her eyes. People are fleeing the facility and being sucked into the ships. Maybe this isn't the government? Maybe this is something she never thought existed? She decides she must find out and runs into whats left of Area 51, hoping for answers. Instead she finds Sofia, the Area 51 Captain. Can they put their differences aside to save themselves, and maybe the world?

I love sci-fi, so I was excited to get my hands on this. You don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this though. If you like big action, the world could be coming to an end, kind of book, than this is for you. I can't say this is a totally new idea, something we have never seen before. Just think fun, action, entertainment, that's what this book is.

I enjoyed both main characters. I especially liked the banter between them. There is obvious sexually tension, even with Sofia wanting to throw Emory in the brig all the time. This has a little romance, enough to enjoy it. It is hard to have time, while trying to save the world, for a love story, but there is enough that it made me smile.

I had fun reading this and was definitely entertained. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a big action book, with two pretty kick ass ladies. I will be reading more books by Davis, without a doubt.

An ARC was given to me by Bold Strokes Books, for a honest review.

5 words to sum up what this book meant to me...

THE. TRUTH. IS. OUT. THERE.

Plus....

X-FILES! X-FILES! X-FILES!

YES!!

Lesley Davis has once again sucked me in with something that I've always been fascinated with and a believer in the "Nothing is what it seems. Nothing. Open your mind" way of life! With "Raging At The Stars," I felt an immediate connection to it because.... The X-Files! It was like Davis wrote it especially for me! All the conspiracy theories, the mindset, circumstances that she described were as if she tapped into my mind, retrieved them and crafted into this truly captivating, engrossing and positively exciting tale! Or, that she and I just happen to share similar mentality where this subject matter's concerned! Plus... "The X-Files!!!" I would be shocked if Davis isn't an X-phile herself! She literally took the mythology of the phenomenally ground-breaking cult series, compiled them altogether and ran with it, putting her very own unique story and writing stamp on it! Even better? Infinitely, I'd say? LESBIANS!!!!! Lesbian romance in the midst of it but not so much that it'd distract from the massive plot! That's the genius of her tale-spinning. As much as I was enamoured of the entire collection of conspiracy theories that were brilliantly deconstructed as the plot unfolded, Davis also soothed it with a lovely, charming romance and...let's not forget, which I now know to expect from Davis.... The WIT! The HUMOUR! The HILARITY! In the dialogue between the protagonists and the other always-interesting secondary characters making the entire reading experience...FUNFUNFUN!!

This was BSB's Daily Bargain, and the reviews here made it sound fascinating and promising - and it really was! I enjoyed my time reading this, it's full of Sci-Fi, and action packed!

MC Emory Hawkes (34) is sassy and complicated, but also full of righteous justice and indignation for conspiracies and the truth being told. But she wasn't expecting the one conspiracy she never took much stock in, Aliens, being REAL. Captain Sofia Martinez (40) is working on a super secret flying tech, out of Area 51. When literal aliens attack, she begins to question all she's been told, and not told as the case may be.

The push and pull between the women is believable and alluring, and the help of tech friend, Dink, helping them from his secret bunker with eyes on the sky and all throughout the world, was just crazy enough to work. It's definitely has that action-movie "it all works out" with the help of a tech-savvy genius, theme running throughout, but I was not mad at it.

Overall this was a fun, exciting romp with a constant threat and conspiracies leading all the way to the top, and some badass people willing to do anything to protect and reveal.

My one complaint was the ending seemed rushed and came too soon. I just wanted more!

The sixth book I've read by this author, and, except for the most recent publication, all have been 4 star reads.

Book opens outside Area 51 with Emory Hawkes, one of the POV's in the book, investigating the place, wanting to find proof of conspiracies. And, while she seems to believe most conspiracies, she's not there for proof about aliens because, no, aliens aren't real. No, she's there to find advanced military technology (the alien stories are smokescreen, things used to deceive the public as a secret military organization builds up advanced technology). In her ear is her friend Dink. I don't mean literally. I should probably be careful considering the type of book I'm reviewing, a Science Fiction book. No, while Dink is quite small, he is human sized small. Way too large to literally fit in Emory's ear. No, he is in a bunker in . . . I forget where, Utah? Talking to Emory over a radio. Watching what Emory sees through a camera on her glasses (that she otherwise does not need). Emory brings big tech to her investigation into Tech.

Naturally, then, while getting ready to storm the base to look for advanced technology, Emory realizes that she can no longer see the stars. One moment: night sky filled with stars. Next? No stars. Where'd the stars go? And then . . . well, how much should I review? This is just the beginning of the book, but I probably should not reveal everything about the alien invasion.

While the space saucers are distracted by fighter planes - Emory darts forward (okay, she drove forward in her camper van) and investigates the base. Whereupon she runs across the other main point of view in the story: Captain Martinez. Sofia Martinez. The two end up spending most of the rest of the book together because Emory saves her from the base, and they are darting around while literal aliens are moving around doing stuff. Also with, most of the time, Dink in their ears.

An action packed fun story. There's a romance but, frankly, I wasn't really that interested in it as much as I was interested in the story. Which isn't a dig or crack at the romance. More that I was paying more attention to other things.

I rather enjoyed this story, as I normally enjoy books by this author (the only book that didn't end up being at least 4 stars was a book that turned out to be the second book in a series, though I read that without knowing it was that and therefore . . . something something (I've still not read the first book in that series)).

The book ends with an opening for more stories following these two characters, though I don't mean that there were any plot holes or anything of the like. No, more that there were little things left in the "we could do x next!" way.

hmm. I can't think of anything else to note at moment.

This story wouldn't leave me alone! It was a fun read, perfect fluff before bed. I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously, but then...it does raise questions that one finds themselves pondering at 3 AM...

I enjoyed this book more than I expected to because I'm not usually into sci-fi and aliens but I do like Lesley Davis's writing. The best parts of the story were the sceptic becoming the believer (no spoilers here) and the relationship between Emory (the main character) and Dink. Emory is credible and her reactions feel "real" even though the things happening around her are out of this world. Sofia as the love interest is also well developed as a character and there are a few stutters where you think she's the bad guy but then you're not sure and that kept the interest in the story for me. Overall, it wasn't too predictable. An entertaining and at times amusing book which has a lot to say about conspiracy theories and yet can also make you think a bit about politics and why people in power make decisions the way they do. Seems quite pertinent at the minute...

An honest review thanks to NetGalley. This was so far out of what I am used to in books that I immediately fell in love. Unlike most books, lesbian-themed or not; it seems that the same plot and ideas are immediately reused. I have never read something like this before; the originality captured me as well as the plot as the story took place. There are surprises and action at every turn, and as we get to know Sophia and Emory, we start falling for them and hope that they end up acting on their feelings. I highly recommend this book, enjoy!

What a great science fiction story! From the first chapter, I was hooked. I was drawn to this book because it was written by Lesley Davis. I have read most of her books and have never been disappointed.

UFO’s, flying saucers, and aliens are everywhere. The three main characters in this book are Emory Hawkes, Captain Sofia Martinez, and Dink. Emory is an investigative journalist and Sofia is an engineer in the military working on flying saucers. Dink is a computer/technology whiz and is a friend of Emory’s. The two of them are conspiracy buffs and soon find themselves in the middle of an invasion. The characters are so well developed that after the first few chapters I felt like I really knew the characters.

The storyline was excellent. The fast, action-paced story seemed so real that the reader might start believing that aliens actually exist.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience an exciting book. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I was given this ARC in return for an honest review.

Emery Hawkes is an investigative journalist dedicated to finding out the truth behind government cover-ups. This finds her sitting outside Area 51, watching for flying saucers when a large triangular flying ship hovers overhead and starts obliterating all the buildings on the secret base. Dink, her best friend, speaks via her earpiece, and is seeing everything she sees through her video recording glasses. It’s the secret seven, but adult, and potentially deadly.

Realising there is a gap in the security, Emery takes a chance and races into the site to investigate. Adopting her fake CIA Agent persona, Emery runs into Captain Sophia Martinez. Escaping together as the destruction of the base resumes from overhead, Emery and Sophia are thrown into a world of chaos. An air force engineer wouldn’t normally spend a second with a journalist known for investigating conspiracy theories, but while aliens are attacking Earth, the rules can be rewritten.

This is a fun romp through aliens and conspiracy theories, with a large dose of romance thrown in. What makes this so entertaining is how well it all fits together. Davis has created two distinct characters, and thrown them into a situation for which neither could prepare. Emery is the most developed and has the most action within the story. She’s a very entertaining creation, and is bold and funny, and definitely attracted to Sophia. Sophia is a little more buttoned-up, and harder to read early in the book. It’s appropriate for the story though, and it works the way it is.

I won’t tell you too much. It was a lot of fun to read and it drew me in enough to make it hard to put the book down. There was a lot of banter between the main characters, which was well delivered and very entertaining.

It is an episode of X-Files with a lesbian romance thrown in. What more could a geek ask?

What if the Roswell conspiration theories were all right? Then something like this book could totally happen.
Destruction and mayhem all over the world because the secret treaty between the government and the aliens is broken. And the people with the power to stop that holding back because of their megalomania.
And then there are the heroes, the underdogs: the conspiracy theorists that knew all along. But now they can fight back...

This kept me turning the pages even though I generally hate science fiction. There was always something happening. I read aloud and I would have liked a few more commas so that I could take a breath in long sentences. I would definitely read another by this author though.
