Into Thin Air

Rate this book
Hannah Lewis’s life is exactly where she thinks it should be. But when her girlfriend, Jordan, disappears into thin air and she and Jordan’s best friend, Nikki, are drawn closer in the search, she discovers that lovers can be strangers and perceived knowledge just as illusory. The more she learns, the less she seems to know, and the more she discovers about herself.

Jordan Webber, a civil rights attorney, emotional economist, and failed monogamist, has her secrets, but none of them account for the sudden turn her life takes as she is ripped away from everything she knows. In a struggle for her sanity, she is forced to confront who she has been and decide if that is still who she wants to be. When they come together again, can anything ever be the same?

I was genuinely rooting for this book to be really good because her last one was just amazing but it just failed with both the storytelling and writing. What i pinpoint and the wrong or error about this storyline from the start is the topic:- the unhealthy nature of their(main characters) relationship being the focal point because it deals with so much cheating and dishonesty plus the author involves church & cult as a side story which i think should have been written more in-depth and research alot better. Just a bit flabbergasted with a few of the stuff that was written and only prefer the chemistry between most of the supporting cast and a little of their love story.

*p.s:- I do not want to cast any aspersions but if an author decides to write about infidelities in past relationships then maybe its a reflection of themselves that they are most likely writing about as therapeutic..just saying (check the 2nd book 'cheating')

First I want to mention Levig's book, Embracing the Dawn, was the best lesfic, pure romance book, published in 2016. I absolutely loved it, and easily bestow that honor on it, though I don't have any awards to hand out:) Anyway, I was absolutely looking forward to finding out how Levig would follow that wonderful book up. To be honest, I'm a bit torn. This is not the easiest book to review or love. And I just can't bring myself to give this more than 3 stars.

The story is about a couple, living together, Hannah and Jordan. After Jordan leaves for the gym one day, she never comes home. Hannah is besides herself. With help from Jordan's best friend Nikki, Hannah does what she can to find her. Will Jordan be found? Is she even alive? Will things ever be the same for these three people?

I am going to be careful to try not to spoil anything that is not given away in the book blurb. If you are the kind of person who doesn't read blurbs, I would not keep reading further.

I'm not always big on books that are triangles, but I thought this storyline did well to grab me. At the heart of this book is really a great romance. It is well built, with chemistry and tension. A couple of likeable characters that are believable together. It has some nice steamy sex scenes too.

That leads me to the problem with this book. While a wonderful and moving romance is going on, another character is missing. Because this book head hops all three POV's, you go from a romance, to a scene that turns your stomach. I went from being happy to feeling sick. This just really messed my emotions up to the point I started not being able to enjoy the romance. If this story would have been between two characters, two POV's, I would have loved it. Instead it made me uncomfortable. Maybe that was the point Levig was trying to do with this book. Maybe she didn't want us to enjoy the romance. If that is the case, she succeeded, it just did not end up working for me.

I'm very interested to see how other people will feel about this book. I have a feeling people will either love it or feel a bit disturbed, like I did. I can't recommend this, but you might fall into the category of people who love this. I will say this, read Embracing the Dawn, it is wonderful!

An ARC was given to me by Bold Strokes Books, for a honest review.

Jeannie Levig definitely knows how to write a memorable story. I put up a brand new shelf "frustrating" because of her well-written but very frustrating debut novel Threads of the Heart. Her excellent second novel Embracing the Dawn immediately went on my "all-time-favorites" shelf and would be read many times. Her third novel Into Thin Air is again very well writen and interesting, but in a way also frustrating. We have three main characters (Jordan, Hannah and Nikki) with a lot of emotional baggage from the past. After Jordan vanishes into thin air, we follow them through two parallel plots. One is about Hannah and Nikki's recovery from Jordan's disappearance and betrayal with a nice slow-burn romance. The other one is about Jordan's doom after her disappearance. That plot alternation is in fact what is frustrating and shocking about this novel. A slice of reconciliation and budding love, and then a slice of something very disturbing and very dark. And at that sharp pace to the very end. Kind of exhausting, but all in all, I have to admit that I liked this book. I recommend it mostly to those who can bear such an intensive hot/cold approach in something which essentially should be a romance novel. Others might be disappointed, so consider yourself warned.
I can not wait to see what Levig will serve us next. I am even afraid a little. LOL

Daring and Different.

Kudos to Jeannie Levig for her fearless efforts to push the boundaries of the standard lesbian love story. Into Thin Air is so much more than a vanilla romance. It’s a daring look at infidelity and sexual addiction. Its also a terrifying look at how events unimagined can affect someone’s life.

The blurb for this novel is vague but conveys the basics. When Hannah’s girlfriend Jordan disappears from her life one day she and Jordan’s friend Nikki discover they both have much to learn from the disappearance. In alternating chapters the reader is shown what has become of Jordan and how effective forces unknown have isolated her from her former life.

Hannah and Nikki discover a lot about themselves and each other as their friendship develops into something more. Levig is skilled at writing character development and the reader is drawn like a magnet to this budding relationship. She adds enough secondary characters to give this couple a solid foundation and the chapters tracking their love story are a pleasure to read.

Levig dares to interrupt a standard romance with jarring chapters involving the missing Jordan. The blurb hints at Jordan being a failed monogamist. As readers, we often relish the backlash on the cheater in a relationship. Rachel Spangler’s stellar Does She Love You? comes to mind. We want our happy ever after and we don’t want the cheater to ever be happy again. What happens to Jordan in this novel shakes and unsettles the reader. It is almost unimaginable, unfathomable that something like this could happen in a first world country in the 21st century. It is a disturbing look at what has happened in the past and thanks to the current political situation in the United States, what could be possible in the present. A cautionary tale to be sure.

Levig has attempted something daring and different with Into the Air. It is a novel like nothing I have read before. As much as I enjoyed watching the relationship between Nikki and Hannah develop I found myself speeding through their scenes to get back to Jordan. It made for a read that will be uncomfortable for many but compelling nonetheless.

5 stars for the courage and conviction to broaden the often-predictable genre of Lesbian Romance.

Two things are apparent to me after reading Jeannie Levig's three novels. 1. She is an absolutely fantastic writer. 2. She is anything but formulaic. Every single one of her books has been good, but all so different. This writer knows how to drawn emotion from her readers.

Infidelity, a hard subject to tackle, right. You want to hate the cheater, you want them to be punished and feel remorse, because, well they suck as a human. You want the cheated to find happiness, to move past her pain and soar to new heights. That's what have in Into Thin Air, but in a dark, gritty way.

Hannah Lewis and Jordan Webber have been together three years. The high school guidance counselor with all-American good looks with the broody, but kind civil rights lawyer. Sounds great on paper. Here is the caveat. Jordan likes Hannah, but she doesn't love her. She has a dark side that demands being fed. So while Hannah lives in her happy, self-absorbed bubble, Jordan cheats with every woman she can. She keeps a part of herself removed from Hannah and their easy/fun relationship, she doesn't feel remorse, she is who she is and she will have what she desires. Sooooo, Jordan is a giant a$$hole. She also vanishes into thin air one morning. Gone!

Nicki Medina is Jordan's bestie. She is the one person who knows how Jordan really operates. She doesn't know all of the secrets of Jordan, one can only imagine how many there really are, but she does know more than anyone else. Nicki had pulled away from Hannah and Jordan the couple, not willing to watch the betrayal of a good woman from the sidelines. She comes back into Hannah's life when Jordan goes missing without a trace.

This story is truly multifaceted. You have the loss of Jordan to Hannah and Nicki and the panic as to what has happened. Was she killed, abducted, has she run away. Where is she, why... This panic state of emotions. You also have the uncovering of absolute betrayal that Hannah is completely blindsided by and the conflicting emotions that come with it.

Hannah and Nicki are bonded by this nightmarish event. They become to rely on each other for strength and support. You feel them changing over time and becoming more than just friend. Leving carefully crafts this relationship and you, as the reader, are absorbed in their slow burn romance.

Where is a$$hat Jordan? That's where it goes dark and sinister. I'm not going to tell you this part, I will say you wouldn't wish this on your worst enemy.

I told you it was multifaceted! Leving challenges you with this book. This story is like a pendulum of emotions, so well crafted that you can't stop even when it gets difficult to read Jordan's plight. This is a really fantastic book, you haven't read anything like this one, I promise.

Mixed feelings for me too.

The positive:
I was really captivated by the book from the beginning, I could not stop reading and I finished it in less than 48 hours.
The author really knows how to write, she gives us deep insight of her characters, she's never banal or bidimensional in what she's showing, and the stories are intriguing, and, in many cases, full of meaning.

The negative:
What did not work for me is this. The narration splits in two lines, one following the missing lady and the other following those who remained. And one of this line is a deep psychological romance about growing up, while the other is a terribly hard, tough story of abuse and violence.
Like the latins said ubi maior, minor cessat, in the presence of a more important theme, the less important one loses relevance.
I was really enjoying the sweet, psychological romance, when the other line hit me. I wasn't prepared for such violence and abuse and my heart and sympathy were totally absorbed to the abused character. Also, such a difficult theme triggers many feelings and considerations about all the abused people. The romance line lost its importance completely, I cannot be brought to cozy when my heart is on abused people. I think the two aspects are incompatible.
Sex was even worse. There's a pretty long section quite erotic. Now, please understand, sex was in the romance separated line of narration, not in the violence/abuse one. But I had to skip it nonetheless (I usually don't), because the thought of torture and violence just made the idea of reading sex untolerable for me.

The whole book left me rather shocked and sad. I'm quite happy for the happy end of some characters, but, most of all, I'm angushed for the ones who underwent the abuse, and for everyone who suffered similar things in this world.
So my reaction can be a good thing, or not.

From a trying objective point of view, this is a very good book. I'd gladly recommend this book to anyone. It's very well written, has a good plot, and all of them, Jordan, Hannah and Nikki are well rounded characters.
Personally, it was confusing to read point of view from 3 narrators; it felt like a distraction from time to time, and I was catching myself getting lost emotionally - I just couldn't keep the feeling, I was losing it wherever the narrator changes.

I have mixed feelings about this book and after reading other reviews, if this was the author's objective, then she achieved it. My main problem is that there are two parallel stories involving the three lead characters in this book: one a budding sweet romance between Hannah and Nikki, and the other the disturbing story behind Jordan's disappearance  "into thin air". Around the middle of the book, these two parts of the plot are alternated every other chapter in a way that doesn't seem to flow naturally. Neither could I enjoy the romance nor empathise with Jordan's suffering fully. Even though the plot idea is interesting, for me, it didn't work in its execution.

Overall, an ok (though not very enjoyable) read. 3 stars.

Jeannie Levig has just leapt onto my literal good reads list. Into Thin Air was a treat. You get a great slow, angsty romance between Hannah and Nikki and then you get the creepy story of what happened to Hannah's missing girlfriend, Jordan. Jordan's a bit of a self centered jerk, but after learning what drives her and what she has to endure I fell for her. I rooted for Hannah and Nikki, but I became more vested in Jordan's outcome. The ending is satisfying, but I'm really hoping for sequel to see Jordan's continued recovery and hopefully a chance to find some love and happiness.

Unforgettable and deeply moving!

A beautiful, compassionate story about friendship, infidelity, conflicted feelings, identity, love, revenge, deep rooted bigotry, strength and so much more. Sometimes heartbreaking, shocking, overwhelming at times but written with genuine empathy. A real page turner and it touch me straight in my heart. Excellent written and with a fabulous heart warming love story. I love it!

This is the first novel I’ve read from this author. It’s a book full of strong emotions, it’s about love, friendship, family, forgiveness and about bigotry and homophobia. Next to the beautiful slow burning romance, sometimes it was very unsettling and made me angry. It pulled me in instantly.

One day out of the blue Jordan is disappearing into thin air. She leaves her girlfriend Hannah and her best friend Nikki at a loss of what happend. First they can’t imagen why Jordan would disappear without a word. After a few days Hannah discovers some secrets about Jordan who will change her life and also the life of Nikki.

During the absence of Jordan, a slow romance begins between Hannah and Nikki. This is the one main strang of the story. During the time they are together in waiting and searching for Jordan, they learn a lot about herself. I also liked the second characters Kate and Aleyda with their support of Hannah and Nikki.

The second main strang was very unsettling. Without telling too much, it is about what happened with Jordan. Of what she has to go through and if she will get the chance to survive and to come back. This part is very homophobic and about bigotry.

The story is told from the three different main characters. I think many of the readers will find this disturbing, but I liked it. I wanted to know from every of the three, what they are thinking and feeling. But it was a roller coaster ride of emotions. There was this beautiful romance building between two very loveable women, and then BAMM it changes completely to rage and helplessness.

Jeannie Levig has a wonderful style of writing. I loved how she tells everything, I could feel the connection between Hannah and Nikki, the friendship that changed to love. And I could also feel the pain, the hate and hard feelings as well.

I recommend this book to everybody, who can stand a story, that’s not just a nice romance. It also brings some hard realities in, who nobody want’s to experience. This story touched me a lot, it will be one of the memorable books I've read.

This is my first book from the author and definitely not the last. I'm gonna check out Embracing the dawn. Yes, I know I still haven't read that one.
She's really a good writer. No questions asked.

It's just that I couldn't like the story. It's just not really for me. I just took a shot.
Well, I have pet peeves but I always try to give it a chance.

Jordan and Hannah? Or Hannah and Nikki? Or maybe Jordan and Lena?
Frankly, I thought I would have to surrender reading this. I skipped a few pages and tried my best to finish this.

The redemption program, that is really sick.
Does it really exist?! I'll be scared if someone will call me sister who's not really a sib of mine.
How can a Father do that to your kid? No matter how bad she is. It's pretty scary!

Warning: Infidelity, torture/abuse, twisted people, religion.
So, if you're not comfortable, think about it.

It's pretty well written and I feel bad for rating this low.

Wow

This the first book I have read from this author. I really liked it. It was a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the book. The characters we're written well. Seeing all of them going through their situations and changing was great. Although one of the situations was very well written and believable. I would definitely recommend this book.

So I started Into Thin Air at the beginning of the year. For such a dramatic opening (missing partner), I had to admit to being a little bored with the first 30% of this book. I put it down until a few nights ago.
Again, I struggled slightly. I was frustrated with the slowly moving plot and not greatly invested in the mystery as we were only shown snippets. I was preparing for a DNF or 2ish stars.
I'm glad I persevered! Once we get into the meat of the story, I was hooked and in very different ways depending on which of the three main characters we were reading from the viewpoint of.
Levig is a superb writer - even though I was a little bored at the beginning, there was never any doubt of that. She drew a lot of emotions from me and I could sympathise with each character, which is not an easy feat. We also see a lot of character growth from two of the MC's, which was very well done.
The dichotomy of this story is a very bold move. The romance is sweet and intense while the parallel storyline is very disturbing. This book comes with a warning. It was often jarring moving between these two storylines, but very well done. It didn't feel as if the author were trying to shock the reader for the fun of it.
My only issues with the ending contain spoilers

I don't think I can rate this. I have no idea how to. There's no doubt that, just like the other two books I've read by Levig, this is well written. I was certainly engaged the entire time. But just like those other two books, this somehow didn't land with me. There's just so much to this story. Some parts are so unbelievable they're ludicrous. Some are hard to read. There are complicated emotions and problematic behavior surrounding all of the characters. I just have no idea how to feel about this one.

This book is intense. I can't say it any other way. The characters of Hannah and Jordan are well crafted, but the storyline was disturbing and I had a hard time finishing the book. If the author was going for intense she succeed, I also didn't like the plot shifts, it felt like more 'shock' value than a twist ending. It's hard to review this book because the author has the right to craft her authentic story, however as reader I would not have picked up the book if I knew it was going that dark & disturbing.

Mmmmm, really not sure how to take this book - lots of anomalies that confused, were they part of the plot? Or not, thus why not concluded? My first thought is "how real is this?" and having read it I still don't know. Consider me confused, but I'm glad I read it.

This is one of the most believable works of fiction I have ever read. Family drama, money, and power takes you to the depths of unimaginable physical and mental torture in the name of religion. Jenny Levig takes you on a journey of deception unlike anything else I've read. You feel the pain and frustration of the characters as they work through the inexplicable disappearance of their friend who is a civil rights attorney. Did one of her cases get her in trouble? Did she run off with another woman and leave her girlfriend? How could someone disappear without a single clue? It's not as hard as you think. You will not be able to put this book down so grab a cup of coffee and curl up. You're in for a ride as you try to figure out how and why someone would disappear Into Thin Air.

Thanks to this year (2018)’s GCLS, Jeannie Levig‘s award-winning “Into Thin Air” piqued me interest. I always wanted to try out Levig’s books but me reckons, everything has its own timing, hasn’t it? Anyway, TLR‘s review hit the nail, at least when it came to being in-line with how I felt whilst reading it and after that. So once again, well done, TLR (click link to read their review)!

You know how you know a book is good and worth a read from cover to cover? For me, my litmus test is, if a book doesn’t increase me level of curiosity, intrigue, excitement and interest by the end of the 1st chapter (stretch to 2nd chapter if I’m in the mood to explore further), there’s a high possibility that I would suspend my reading of it, put it in the back-burner to be re-tried at a later date, time and mood permitting, obvs! I’m excited to say Levig’s “Into Thin Air” shot me intrigue to the nines by the end of the 1st chapter! *passed test, earning a big tick in me “books worth reading” box* Whoa! I did NOT see that coming! Not about the disappearance itself since it was already revealed in the book’s blurb, but HOW it was done. I had me own theory of how it’d happen but definitely NOT what Levig threw at me! For THAT alone, TOP marks to the author for creativity and originality. Naturally, I finished the book in record speed. Yeh, suspenseful books tend to have that effect on me speed because I wanna know how everything would come together in the end.

So, it's been a week since I finished this book, and I don't know if I liked it or not. I'm thinking I may have liked it better if there was less of the Hannah/Nikki component, and more of the Jordan/conversion therapy story. The thing is, I've read Hannah and Nikki's story before, but I've never read a lesfic about conversion therapy. I'm sure they are out there, I've just never seen them, and it's an important subject to be aware of. I love lesbian romance novels, but I feel Into Thin Air could have been more effective as a mystery/thriller. I didn't dislike the book, but I don't feel it was as good as it could have been.

Ohh this book. It confused and befuddled me so. The romance had so much potential. I loved watching the leads get together. The chemistry was great. But then we’d turn to the POV of Jordan, our missing person, and the torture and abuse would come to the front. It was just too much for a romance novel. I think this works when it’s billed as a mystery and when one POV takes center stage. I just can’t jump between the two.

Into the Air is a mystery. When I first started the book, I found it rather slow and thought it was rather dry. However, once I read several chapters, I got caught up in the story. Whenever a story spans a long period—in this case about eight months, it is difficult to keep the story momentum at a good pace but not skimp on the details that build the plot. Ms. Levig did add a few too many details at times. When the pace slowed, I felt like skimming those portions so I could get back to the mystery.

Character development was good. The plot was realistic and will certainly make the reader want to read on and route for Jordan to get saved. My kudos to Ms. Levig for presenting a plot that is different from the garden variety murder mystery.

I give this book 4 stars out of 5. Readers, be patient and forge ahead with reading the early chapters. You will be rewarded with a good mystery.

I have wanted to read this for a while, and finally picked it up. So many things to say about this story. First off, there are some hard topics covered here that Levig challenges the reader to face. I never divulge something that is not covered in an author’s synopsis of a book, but I will say that this book had me on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. It may be tagged as Lesbian Romance, but I would categorize it also as a thriller/mystery/drama as well due to the disappearance of Jordan.
Levig develops characters of variable strength and fortitude. I felt that she treated the subject of infidelity boldly and responsibly. The circumstances of Jordan’s disappearance really surprised me, and although it was a difficult subject, Levig really kept me engaged in the drama of it. Well done!

This is a mixture of a romance alternated by some kind of a dystopian ‘erase gayness’ extreme.

Hannah Lewis and Jordan Webber have been a relationship for three years and living together for two. The book starts dramatically with a hot sex scene immediately followed by Jordan being abducted. Hannah obviously embarks on trying to find her girlfriend. Her rock solid support in this search is Nikki, Jordan’s best friend, who has carried a torch for Hannah from the time they met.
